Evening Red Sox Delight – 6/20

Hiroki Kuroda (L), Dustin Pedroia & Clay Buchholz (R) - AP Photos

After sweeping one NL West team this week, the Boston Red Sox will look to do it again against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the finale of a three-game set at Fenway Park.

Tonight’s game will start at 8:05 p.m. and will be shown nationally on ESPN. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2010 Red Sox radio network.

Clay Buchholz takes the mound looking for his 10th win in his 14th start of the season. In his previous 13 starts, he is 9-4 with a 2.67 ERA. Buchholz has never faced the Dodgers in his career. This is just the second interleague start for him in his career. His first was his last start against the Arizona Diamondbacks where he picked up the win five days ago.

Hiroki Kuroda has made 13 starts for Joe Torre and the Dodgers this season. In those starts, he is 6-4 with a 3.10 ERA. He’s never faced the Red Sox in his career. Kuroda is 1-5 with a 4.89 ERA in six career interleague starts.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 6/20

Boston Red Sox Dustin Pedroia celebrates as he watches teammate Daniel Nava score on his game-winning RBI single against the Los Angeles Dodgers during the ninth inning of their MLB inter-league baseball game at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts June 19, 2010 - Reuters Pictures

Before we get going here today, I just want to wish a Happy Father’s Day to all of the fathers out there, including my own. Without you, we wouldn’t be here today.

Dustin Pedroia had never had a walk-off hit as member of the Boston Red Sox in his three plus season. That all changed on Saturday when his two strike, two out single to right field brought in last Saturday’s hero Daniel Nava with the winning run to give them a 5-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Ironically enough, the Laser Show’s game-winning hit went to his best friend Andre Either in right field but his throw was off the mark. And all it did was give the trash-talking Pedroia more fuel for the fire with his best friend.

It’s not too often that a team makes four errors and wins. But the Red Sox were able to overcome two errors by Bill Hall and one each by Marco Scutaro and Adrian Beltre. It was definitely an adventure for Hall out there and it just shows really how good J.D. Drew is out there in a tough right field at Fenway Park.

Speaking of Drew, he had an MRI on his injured right hamstring before the game and it’s thought that he’ll be back in the lineup on Tuesday when the Red Sox are in Colorado.

Tim Wakefield is still winless at Fenway Park this season and may have gotten the win if not for Hall’s second error out in right field. While he did give up a home run to Manny Ramirez, for the most part Wake was outstanding. He had good movement on his knuckleball and threw it for strikes. He did his job giving the Red Sox a chance to win.

For Wake, it was also his 200th start at Fenway Park, which tied him for the most in Red Sox history with Roger Clemens. Now if the Red Sox can just get him some wins, he could catch up to Clemens and Cy Young at the top of the all-time Red Sox wins.

The Red Sox will enter tonight’s finale looking for the sweep of the Dodgers behind Clay Buchholz. They’ll also be looking to either tie the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees for first place or stay one game behind.

We’ll be back later with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups, any news and links from the day but for now enjoy the overnight links after the jump.

UConn’s Mike Olt Signs With Texas Rangers

Mike Olt - Hartford Courant photo

The UConn Huskies baseball team had a great run this season and saw three of their players drafted during the 2010 MLB Draft. One of those players was Branford, CT native Mike Olt, who was the 49th overall pick on the first day of the draft in the compensation round by the Texas Rangers.

And according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, Olt has signed with the Rangers, receiving a signing bonus of $717,300.

Olt, who turns 22 in August, hit .318 with 23 homers and 76 RBIs for UConn this season. He set the Connecticut all-time home run record with 44 in his three seasons. He is considered an outstanding defender with tremendous power who may have issues battling professional breaking balls.

Congratulations to Olt and best of luck.
