Evening Red Sox Delight – 6/23

John Lackey (L), Ubaldo Jimenez (R)

After the Colorado Rockies stopped the Boston Red Sox six-game winning streak last night, the Red Sox will look to get back on track tonight in the second game of a three-game set at Coors Field.

Tonight’s game will start at 8:40 p.m. and will be shown on NESN in the Red Sox television market. The game will be shown on FOX Sports Net Rocky Mountain in the Rockies television market. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2010 Red Sox radio network.

John Lackey has made 14 starts for Terry Francona and the Red Sox this season. In those starts, he is 8-3 with a 4.53 ERA. He’s faced the Rockies once in his career as a member of the Angels. In that start back in 2006 in Anaheim, he picked up the win after allowing three runs over eight innings.

The probable starter in the 2010 MLB All-Star Game for the National League is tonight’s Rockies starter Ubaldo Jimenez. He has dominated everyone in his 14 starts with a 13-1 record with a 1.15 ERA. He has never faced the Red Sox during the regular season in his career but did face them in the 2007 World Series. He took the loss in Game 2.

New York Senate Uses MMA To Cut Deficit And Help State Budget

As you know, I’m a big MMA fan. I follow it as much as I can on television and I usually have posted videos from fights that are knockouts or wins by submission. The reason I’m telling you all this is that this post is a guest post from Brett Jacobs of MMA Industries, who graciously took the time to explain how the state of New York is using MMA to help out with it’s budget deficit.

Enjoy the guest post:

The New York state budget has had a hard time fighting off a deficit throughout all of the overall economic problems that have plagued the country. This has caused the state to consider any and all ways to save money and help balance the budget, including closing down state parks and creating food and drink taxes on everyday products like soda. Some of these choices have been met with disdain from people of the state so the Senate continues to look for additional ways to raise money. The hopeful news is that they may have just found the perfect option that gives something back to New Yorkers rather than taking it away.

On June 16th, the New York State Senate passed a bill to legalize mix martial arts in the state of the New York. It still needs to be approved by the State Assembly in order to be a law, but passing the State Senate is a big deal for both the Empire State and Mixed Martial Arts. MMA, while being legal in many other states around the country, has been banned in New York since the mid-nineties which meant that prime venues like Madison Square Garden in New York City and the 50,000 seat Carrier Dome in Syracuse were off limits for holding MMA events. This would no longer be the case if the assembly passes the bill. Dozens of great venues in the state would be open to new events that would help grow the already popular sport of MMA even further while helping the state make money.

It’s hard to imagine that New York state education and other programs would be a direct beneficiary of MMA, but that would be the exact case if the bill passes. Mixed Martial Arts is one of the most popular sports in the country and its popularity grows with every passing day. This would mean that the dozens of sold out shows that MMA has every year would finally bring revenue to New York.

To put the financial benefits of legalizing MMA into perspective, just look at the numbers of the sport according to Fannation.com:

  • $340. That was the average ticket price of UFC 81 at the MGM Grand. While this may seem like a lot, people are paying it to see their favorite matches. One could imagine the amount of tax money that would go to directly financing state programs and projects. Also a factor to consider is the amount of revenue brought in by people coming from all across the country for the events that would be spending money on food and accommodations.
  • 170 countries broadcast UFC and other MMA events, which brings in huge promotion for some not as well known New York state cities that may hold an event.
  • MMA industries like UFC have gone from million dollar companies to billion dollar companies in less than a decade showing just how popular this sport really can be.

These numbers don’t even account for New York based MMA gyms that will see new revenue to help train local fighters in a sport that was once outlawed in their home state. This will directly correlate with an increase in local sales of MMA gear, like MMA gloves. Hundreds of retailers will benefit from this boost. The increase in local fan-base will have a direct impact on the sale of MMA t-shirts that display their favorite fighter or industry brand. They have become a hot commodity as the sport has increased in popularity. There is no doubt that the reach of the bill, if passed, is not just huge for New York but is greatly important to its many citizens that are struggling because of the bad economy.

The state and Governor David Paterson have estimated that allowing the sport to be legalized would bring in an extra $2 million after two years for the state’s $8 billion deficit and studies have shown that holding an event in Madison Square Garden would generate $11.3 million in economic activity. This may not seem like a lot but it’s a step in the right direction for the state. This bill is something that New York has been trying to do for over the last two years but has failed in doing so. Even if the bill doesn’t pass the assembly, Governor Paterson has stated he will include it in his emergency extender bill giving it another way to be legalized. Yet, right now is the time for the passing of this bill because now MMA is closer than it’s ever been to being a popular and helpful force in the Empire State.

Thanks to Brett Jacobs for taking the time to write this post.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 6/23

Now that the USA has advanced on to the second round of the World Cup thanks to a very late Landon Donovan goal, we could move forward to the business at hand involving the Boston Red Sox.

Jon Lester #31 of the Boston Red Sox waits to bat against the Colorado Rockies during the game at Coors Field on June 22, 2010 in Denver, Colorado - Getty ImagesWe sort of expected tonight’s game with Ubaldo Jimenez pitching for the Colorado Rockies to be the low scoring game of the series but it happened last night when Jon Lester and Jhoulys Chacin squared off on the bump at Coors Field.

Chacin looked virtually unhittable for the first two innings but ran into some trouble in the third when the Red Sox loaded the bases up. But they could not push a run across against him in that inning or for his 6 2/3 innings. The Red Sox only managed four hits against him and couldn’t take advantage of the five walks Chacin issued.

The Red Sox had another chance in the 7th with the bases loaded but pinch-hitter David Ortiz grounded out. The man he pinch-hit for by the way was Lester.

Lester matched Chacin with zeroes through the first four innings but the Rockies broke through against him in the 5th for a run. Lester ended up being a victim of the National League rules because he was pinch-hit for by Big Papi. Had they been in Boston or if interleague rules allowed the DH, Lester would have probably gone out to pitch the 7th since he had thrown only 90 pitches through the first six innings.

While the Red Sox did rally for a run in the 9th, it wasn’t enough since the Rockies added an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th on a sure fire double play ball that took a bad hop over the head of Marco Scutaro.

Instead the Red Sox saw their six game winning streak snapped and find themselves in a virtual tie for second still with the Tampa Bay Rays. Both teams are 1.5 games behind the Yankees for first place. The Red Sox are also still second in the majors with 43 wins.

Josh Reddick did find himself back in the big leagues and in the starting lineup as it’s now thought J.D. Drew will be out until at least Thursday’s game. At least that’s what the Red Sox are hoping as they’ll have to make a roster move with Daisuke Matsuzaka coming off the disabled list to start. Robert Manuel, who didn’t see action while in Boston, was sent back to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Josh Beckett is also progressing in his rehab and will throw another side session tomorrow. He threw a total of 42 pitches, all fastballs, in yesterday’s side session. It still appears though Beckett is at least two weeks away from going on a rehab assignment.

Let’s hope that John Lackey is on top of his game tonight as runs should be hard to come by against Jimenez, who did leave the ballpark early yesterday do to sickness. It still should be a great game tonight either way. Let’s hope the Red Sox can come out on top.

We’ll be back later with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups, news and any links but for now enjoy the overnight links.

Sporting News 2010 Preseason All-American Teams

Sporting News Yearbook Cover NortheastST. LOUIS – University of Connecticut senior linebacker Lawrence Wilson (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) and senior offensive guard Zach Hurd have both been named preseason All-American by the Sporting News. Both players were selected to the third team.

Wilson was a first team All-BIG EAST Conference pick in 2010 and led the Huskies in tackles with 140. He also had five sacks and 11 tackles for a loss. Wilson was first in the BIG EAST in tackles per game with 10.8 – which was also tenth nationally. On Monday, he was named to the watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, which is awarded annually to the nation’s best defensive player.

Hurd was a first-team All-BIG EAST pick last year as he started all 13 games at left guard. Hurd has made 26 starts in a row for UConn dating back to the beginning of the 2008 season. Hurd will serve as one of UConn’s four captains in 2010. On Monday, Hurd was named to the Outland Trophy Watch List, presented annually to college football’s best interior lineman, on either offense or defense.

Connecticut opens the season at Michigan on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 3:30 p.m. The game will be televised by ABC.

Patriots to Wear 1985 Replica Uni’s

Steve Grogan - AP PhotoThe New England Patriots have announced that they will wear 1985 replica uniforms in two games in the upcoming 2010 NFL season. The team, which has officially dropped the alternate silver jersey, will wear the alternate uniforms commemorating the 1985 Super Bowl XX team that was crushed in New Orleans by the Chicago Bears, 46-3.

The uniforms, which will feature the red jersey with Pat Patriot on the white helmet, are very similar to AFL 50th Anniversary throw backs the team wore last season. The team is allowed to wear them twice during the NFL season and will wear them at home on October 31 against the Minnesota Vikings and on the road November 25 in Detroit on Thanksgiving Day.

On that day I’d expect to see the white jersey with the red pants that was the road uniform for the club.
