The Patriots are reporting the game as a sell out. It is the 224th consecutive sell out dating back to the 1994 season opener. The record includes preseason, regular season and playoff games.

Tailgating

Here’s a bunch of different tailgating recipes from Tailgating.com. There’s something there for everyone and every type of meal or snack. I’ve tried some of the recipes and they’re very good.

You can find other recipes from the team on their website. Includes Gronk’s Buffalo Chicken Dip, Carne Asada Fries, Cincinnati Chili and more.

And with tailgating many people enjoy some adult beverages. With that in mind check out Drink Nation for how to make all sorts of great drinks. You can look things up by name, ingredient(s) or theme.

Whether it’s at the game, a bar or a friend’s house moderation is always the key to a great time. Please don’t drink and drive and designate a sober driver. Remember drive sober or get pulled over.

JASPER HOWARD MEMORIAL

A memorial in honor of Jasper Howard, the UConn football student-athlete who tragically lost his life five years ago, was dedicated at Rentschler Field on November 1, 2014. Funds for the statue were raised in a grassroots fashion with the efforts spearheaded by UConn supporters Dan and Lisa Lowry of Prospect, Conn. The lead gift for the memorial came from former UConn head football coach Randy Edsall, who was Howard’s coach with the Huskies. Donations also came from former Husky student-athletes and fans from around the country.

Howard lost his life on October 18, 2009 – hours after UConn had defeated Louisville at Rentschler Field on Homecoming. Howard recorded a career-high 11 tackles in the contest and a fumble recovery.

Funds will continue to be raised for the Jasper T. Howard Endowed Scholarship Fund at UConn, which is presented annually to a cornerback on the Husky football team who best embodies the qualities of Howard.

For information on how to contribute to that fund, please visit http://s.uconn.edu/howardscholarship.

The statue is made of barre grey granite quarried in Barre, Vt. It is a three-piece memorial that has an overall height of seven feet and weighs 3.25 tons. The top piece of granite is carved into mirror 6’s so whether viewing from the front or back it is a 6 and is colored to replicate the home jersey Howard wore.

The pedestal which the 6 sits on top of is lettered on the East and West facing sides. The east side has a quote from Jasper and is accented by 23kt gold leafed letters. The west side contains a narrative of Jasper’s life and a porcelain picture of Jasper. K. G. According to a survey conducted by Arizona State, UConn has the 12th most freshman and sophomores on its two-deep (26), the seventh-fewest seniors on the two-deep (8), and the fourth-fewest total seniors on the roster (12).

Here is a breakdown by class of Husky players who have seen their first collegiate action during the first four games of the 2014 season – a total of 24 players.

After throwing for 303 yards at East Carolina on Oct. 23, Chandler Whitmer became one of 11 quarterbacks in the FBS to eclipse 300 in a game in each of the past three seasons.

The list is:

Geremy Davis has made a reception in 33-straight games, dating back to the 2011 season, the 12th-longest such streak in the country.

Deshon Foxx had an 88-yard TD pass reception from Whitmer vs. East Carolina. The play was the fourth-longest pass in school history and the longest since a 90-yarder from Dan Orlovsky to Jason Williams against Temple in 2004.

Senior cornerback Byron Jones (New Britain, Conn.), who saw his UConn career end against East Carolina, had a 70-yard interception return for a TD late in the first half of the USF game on Sept. 19. Jones also has a career fumble return for a touchdown and became just the third Husky player to have a fumble return for a TD and an interception TD in a career. Jones fumble return for a TD also came against USF – in a 16-10 UConn win in 2011.

Redshirt junior safety Andrew Adams tied a program record when he became the fifth Husky ever to record three interceptions in a game, doing so against UCF on Nov. 1.

The UConn defense is ranked 47th in the country in total defense at 369.1 yards per game. UConn is also ranked 47th nationally and 5th in the league in rushing defense (148.2 ypg) and is sixth in scoring defense (27.7 ppg). UConn is 26th in the country and 2nd in the conference in punt returns at 11.4 yards per return.

In individual leaders, redshirt junior Marquise Vann (Cincinnati, Ohio) is tied for 39th in the country in tackles with 9.2 per game – which is 7th in the conference.

Cincinnati Bearcats vs UConn Huskies stat matchup

Notes from this week’s opponent Cincinnati:

Here is some video from Cincinnati head coach Tommy Tuberville’s weekly pregame press conference. Here are some selected quotes from his press conference.

Tommy Tuberville is in his second year in charge of the Bearcat program and is a veteran of college coaching. He led Cincinnati to a 9-4 record last season as the team played in the Belk Bowl. He had also had successful head coaching stops at Mississippi (1995-98), Auburn (1999-2008) and Texas Tech (2010- 12). His overall head coach record is 145-84. In his three seasons at Texas Tech, he had a 20-17 mark and a pair of bowl appearances. In his ten seasons at Auburn, he led the Tigers to 85 overall wins, which is fourth in school history. Tuberville led Auburn to seven-straight bowl appearances.

Here is Cincinnati’s depth chart for the game.

Here are Cincinnati’s 2014 roster and 2014 schedule.

The UC football team will wear the decal pictured to the left on its helmets for the remainder of the 2014 season in memory of redshirt freshman RB Chamoda Kennedy-Palmore, who died tragically in a motorcycle accident on Sept. 25, 2014. Kennedy-Palmore, who was wearing a helmet and protective gear, was struck while driving his bike and died of his injuries.

After a three-game skid in October, UC has a four-game winning streak going following wins at SMU, vs. USF, at Tulane and vs. East Carolina.

UC is bowl eligible following its sixth win of the season, a 54-46 thriller over East Carolina. UC will play in its fourth straight bowl game and eight in the last nine seasons.

UC is riding a five-game road conference win streak, dating back to the 2013 game at Memphis, a 34-21 UC win.

UC is 32-of-35 in the red zone this season. The three non-scores came on two kneel downs and a missed field goal.

The Bearcats are averaging nearly three sacks per game (2.77) and lead the American Athletic Conference

QB Gunner Kiel has thrown a league leading 24 touchdown passes in nine games.

LB Jeff Luc has registered 97 tackles in nine games. He is second in the American averaging 11 stops per game (10.7). Luc leads the American with his three fumble recoveries.

DE Terrell Hartsfield leads the American with 8.0 sacks, more than quadrupling his 2013 number of 1.5.

K Andrew Gantz is one of 20 semifinalists for the Groza Award and is 12-of-13 on the season.

Four Goal First Period Leads Crunch To 5-4 Win Over Wolf Pack

By Zachary Grenier

Hartford, CT, November 19, 2014 – The Hartford Wolf Pack were unable to recover from a Syracuse Crunch four-goal first period Wednesday night at the XL Center and lost, 5-4.

Hartford Wolf PackMike Angelidis and Yanni Gourde led the way for the Crunch with two goals each on the night.  Tanner Richard tallied two assists in the Crunch victory as well.  Conor Allen had a team high three points on the night for Hartford, with a goal and two assists.  Justin Vaive also gave the Pack a goal and an assist in the loss.

The Crunch jumped out to an early lead just 16 seconds into the game, when Henri Ikonen found Angelidis breaking to the back door, where he beat Hartford starting goaltender Cedrick Desjardins for his fifth goal of the season.

The Wolf Pack’s Michael Kostka answered right back just 27 seconds later, when he beat Syracuse goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy (16 saves) with a slap-shot over the catching glove.

A Vaive goal at 6:01 gave the Pack a 2-1 lead, as Vaive drove to the net, protecting the puck on his backhand, and shot it past Vasilevskiy before sliding into the Crunch goaltender.  The goal caused a skirmish among the ten skaters on the ice and ultimately led to a Vaive roughing penalty.

“Obviously you never want to start a game with that many penalties in the first,” said Vaive.  “It’s really hard to get momentum started when you get a good shift and then you put the (opposing) team right back on the power play.”

The Crunch power-play unit capitalized on the call, off of a quick faceoff win by Jonathan Marchessault.  The draw went back to Joel Vermin, who got a pass over to Gourde.  Gourde then fired a slap shot to the net and past Desjardins for his sixth goal of the season.

At the 10:40 mark, Angelidis was able to finish a bouncing puck in front of the net for his second goal of the night to give the Crunch a 3-2 lead.

Richard showed some nice patience in front of the net for Syracuse when he dropped the puck to a trailing Gourde, who put his second puck away on the night and put the Crunch up 4-2 at 16:01 of the first.

The shot was the last one that Desjardins (five saves) would face, and Mackenzie Skapski (14 saves) would come off of the bench in relief.

“Three of their first four goals were direct results of turnovers,” said Hartford coach Ken Gernander.

Vaive hit Allen with a pass in the second period that sprung him free past the Crunch defense and in one-on-one on Vasilevskiy.  Allen took a straight wrist shot high on the goaltender’s blocker side to notch his third goal of the year, and cut the Syracuse lead to just one.

“That’s probably my first career breakaway so I knew I was shooting the whole time,” said Allen.

At the 19:19 mark of the second period, J.T. Miller lined up as a defenseman for a faceoff in the Syracuse end of the rink. The draw went back to Miller, who passed it to Allen.  Allen fired the puck on net, and Marek Hrivik sent the rebound to the side of the net, where Miller snuck in to grab the puck and score on the empty net.

“[Hrivik] took a whack at it and kept the play alive, and he took a hit for it too,” said Gernander.  “Those are the types of plays that multiply over the course of a 60-minute game, if you can do that, it’s going to give you your best chance for success.”

With four minutes gone in the third period, though, Syracuse got what would turn out to be the winning goal.  Luke Witkowski took a slap shot from the blue line that was tipped by Philippe Paradis and rang off of the post and in past Skapski, to give the Crunch a 5-4 lead.

The Wolf Pack’s next action is a trip to Providence this Friday, November 21 to battle the Bruins.  Faceoff is 7:05 PM, and all of the action can be heard on line at www.979espn.com.  Video streaming is available at www.ahllive.com.

The next home game for the Wolf Pack is this Saturday night, November 22, a 7:30 contest vs. the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.  The first 3,000 fans into that game receive a Wolf Pack winter hat, courtesy of CT-DOT.

Tickets for all 2014-15 Wolf Pack home games are now on sale at the XL Center ticket office, on-line at www.hartfordwolfpack.com and by phone at (877) 522-8499.  Wolf Pack tickets start as low as $12 for youth 12 years old or younger.

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today claimed infielder Juan Francisco off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays.

Boston Red SoxExecutive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

Francisco, 27, played 106 games for the Blue Jays last season, batting .220 (63-for-287) with 16 doubles, two triples, 16 home runs, and 43 RBI. A left-handed batter, 34 of his 63 hits went for extra bases.

He averaged an extra-base hit every 11.8 at-bats, the ninth-best rate among American Leaguers with at least 300 plate appearances. His 34 extra-base hits were the most in the majors among players with no more than 350 plate appearances.

Francisco began 2014 with the Milwaukee Brewers and was released on March 24. He was signed by Toronto as a minor league free agent on April 1 and played 12 games for Triple-A Buffalo, batting .341 with two doubles, a triple, two home runs, and 11 RBI. Selected to the major league roster on April 19, he remained with the Blue Jays for the duration of the season.

Against right-handed pitching, Francisco is a career .248 hitter (213-for-848) with 46 doubles, four triples, 47 home runs and 141 RBI.

Defensively, Francisco has played both first and third base in the major leagues. The majority of his time has come at third base where he has played 197 games (161 starts), compared to 87 games (77 starts) at first.

Over his major league career, the Dominican native has hit .236 (235-for-996) with 50 doubles, four triples, 48 home runs, and 152 RBI in 404 games for the Cincinnati Reds (2009-11), Atlanta Braves (2012-13), Milwaukee Brewers (2013), and Blue Jays (2014).

With today’s transaction, Boston’s 40-man roster is at 36
