March 26 Whale Home Game to be “Howe Family Night”

HARTFORD, March 3, 2011: Whalers Sports and Entertainment president and COO Howard Baldwin Jr. announced today that the Connecticut Whale’s home game Saturday, March 26 at the XL Center will feature a “Howe Family Night” celebration, honoring the great Gordie Howe, his sons, Marty and Mark, and late wife, Colleen.  The Whale take on the Bridgeport Sound Tigers that night in a 7:00 PM GEICO Connecticut Cup game.

CT WhaleA new banner saluting the Howes, “hockey’s first family”, will be raised to the XL Center rafters, and area hockey fans will have an opportunity to salute the entire Howe clan for their contributions to hockey in the Hartford market.

“In a lot of ways, Gordie Howe really put Hartford on the hockey map,” Baldwin said.  “He brought true greatness to the city, and helped usher the Whalers into the NHL.  We feel that now is the perfect time to honor him and his legendary family, with so many great things going on with the Whale, the Harvest-Properties.com Whalers Hockey Fest having been such a momentous event, and so much excitement around hockey in Connecticut right now.”

Prior to the game, fans can meet Gordie, and get a personalized autographed book and photo, by purchasing a copy of  the colorful 185-page book “Howe #9”.   The book sells for $70 and he will begin signing copies at 5:30 PM in the XL Center atrium.  In addition, the first 2000 fans in attendance will receive a free commemorative 36-page Gordie Howe tribute program, loaded with full color photos and stories.

Gordie Howe, the NHL’s all-time leader in seasons-played (26) and games-played (1,767) and second all-time leading goal-scorer (801), joined the WHA’s New England Whalers in June of 1977, along with Marty and Mark, with whom he had been playing with the Houston Aeros.  Gordie skated for the Whalers in their final two WHA seasons, 1977-78 and 1978-79, totaling 53 goals, 86 assists, 139 points and 136 penalty minutes.  He then brought down the curtain on his brilliant career with a 15-goal, 41-point performance in 80 games with the Whalers in their first NHL season, 1979-80.

Mark Howe played 929 NHL games, and another 426 in the WHA, in a 22-year pro career that spanned from the 1973-74 season through 1994-95.  Playing both forward and defense, Mark amassed NHL totals of 197 goals and 545 assists for 742 points, along with 455 penalty minutes, in 929 games with the Whalers, Philadelphia and Detroit.  In his Hartford tenure, in 213 career NHL games, Mark totaled 51 goals and 147 assists for 198 points and had 92 penalty minutes.  In 147 total WHA games with the Whalers, he scored 72 goals and added 126 assists for 198 points and served 64 minutes in penalties.

Marty Howe, a defenseman, played 141 total WHA games with the Whalers in 1977-78 and 1978-79, scoring 19 goals and adding 25 assists for 44 points while serving 97 minutes in penalties.  He remained with the Whaler organization through the 1984-85 season, logging 197 NHL games, in which he scored a total of 31 points, two goals and 29 assists, and had 99 PIM.

Colleen Howe, who passed away in 2009, was married to Gordie for 56 years and was the matriarch behind all of the family’s countless hockey accomplishments.  A keen hockey and business mind in her own right, Colleen was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in recognition of her tireless work in youth hockey and other humanitarian efforts.  Colleen handled all of the family’s business affairs, including the negotiation of Gordie’s Whaler contracts and his personal endorsements.

Tickets for the March 26 game, and all 2010-11 Whale home games, are available now at the XL Center box office, through Ticketmaster Charge-by-Phone at 1-800-745-3000 and on-line at www.ctwhale.com.  Tickets start at $7 each at the XL Center ticket office on game day.

If fans want to redeem a ticket, they should contact Baldwin at hlb@whalerssports.com.

Big East Big Dog in 2011 NCAA Tourney

On Sunday the NCAA Selection Committee picked the 68 schools to play in the 2011 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament with the Final Four being held at Reliant Stadium in Houston.

The big news in the selections were as always the teams that were left out or teams that made it that didn’t deserve it and there are a number in these categories.  Among the teams being bashed for their selection by the committee are Southern Cal; UAB; Penn State; Marquette and Clemson.  While teams like St. Mary’s and Colorado were left out.

Big East ConferenceOthers are chirping about the seedings. Why is Florida a #2 seed when Kentucky a #4 seed beat them twice?  Why is Texas a #4 seed?

But to me the biggest thing is that the NCAA took eleven teams from the Big East, clearly the beast of the college basketball world.  I’d put the top four Big East teams up against the top four teams from all the other conferences any day.  Supposed powerhouse conferences like the ACC had four teams picked as did the lowly Pac-10. While the Big Ten put in seven teams, the SEC has five as does the Big 12.  But other smaller conferences like the A-10 got three bids, the CAA got three as well as did the Mountain West.

Granted their were four more slots to fill this year as the tournament expands from 64 to 68 teams but I think teams like St. Mary’s and Colorado deserved a better shot at making the tourney as opposed to 11 teams from one conference or mid-level teams from mid-major conferences.

As a Big East basketball fan since Day 1 I am proud to say the conference has the most bids ever in a single tournament even if maybe some were border line picks. The Big East has one #1 seed; one #2 seed; two #3 seeds; one #4 seed; one #5 seed; three #6 seeds; one #9 seed and one #11 seed.  In the past the committee has tried to avoid having conference members meet head-to-head in the tournament but this year that went out the window as Connecticut could face Cincinnati in the round of 32 as could Syracuse and Marquette. The Big East has had multiple final four teams 3 times.  In 1985, Villanova and Georgetown played in the title game and St. John’s also made the semi finals; in 1987 Syracuse lost the title game and Providence went down in the semi’s and in 2009 UCONN and Villanova lost in the semi final games.  Since it’s inception in 1979 the Big East has been represented in the Final Four 17 times (last school was WVU in 1010) and has won five National titles with UCONN winning twice and Georgetown, Villanova and Syracuse each winning once.

As a UCONN fan I never thought at Day 1 of the Big East that the team would travel to the heights it’s been with  seven conference tournament titles, three Final Fours and two National Championships.  This league is the best of them all and obviously one school from the conference could in all probability be raising the championship trophy on April 4th. It’d really be something if it was Kemba Walker with his hands on it.

Don’t forget to fill out your bracket and enjoy the games.

Evening Red Sox News From The Fort – 3/13

Infielder Lars Anderson(notes) #78 of the Boston Red Sox rounds the bases after his home run against the Pittsburgh Pirates during a Grapefruit League Spring Training Game at McKechnie Field on March 13, 2011 in Bradenton, Florida.

Tough day for the Boston Red Sox as they made the trip north to Bradenton to play the Pittsburgh Pirates and fell 9-4 on Sunday afternoon.

Josh Beckett started this one for the Red Sox and looked good for the first four innings of the game. He did allow a home run on a pitch that he left up in the zone to John Bowker in the second inning. But things really came unglued for him in the 5th.

Beckett left another pitch up in the zone that Ronny Cedeno blasted out of the ballpark. Former Red Sox farmhand Dusty Brown worked a walk off of Beckett and Andy Marte followed that up with a double. Beckett’s afternoon ended when he plunked Jose Tabata in the back to load the bases.

Scott Atchison came in and allowed a RBI single to Neil Walker and then a two-run double to Pedro Alvarez. Lyle Overbay also knocked in two runs in the inning that were charged to Atchison, who allowed the two runs on four hits and a walk with a strikeout in the inning.

Daniel Bard struck out two in his inning of work while Andrew Miller walked one and struck out one in his inning. Lenny DiNardo allowed two runs on four hits in the 8th inning.

The Red Sox managed just six hits on the afternoon led by Lars Anderson who had two hits including a solo home run. Mike Cameron added a hit and two RBIs. Darnell McDonald had the other Red Sox RBI on the afternoon with a solo home run of his own.

Boston will be back in Ft. Myers on Monday night when their hated rivals, the New York Yankees come to City of Palms Park.  Former Yankee Alfredo Aceves will make the start for the Red Sox. Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez are expected to be in the lineup. Brandon Duckworth, Dennys Reyes, Bobby Jenks, Rich Hill and Hideki Okajima are also scheduled to pitch for the Red Sox.

Sergio Mitre will make the start for the Yankees with Nick Swisher, Curtis Granderson and Brett Gardner making the trip south.

The game will begin at 7:05 p.m. and will be televised in the Red Sox television market on NESN. It will also be available for those not in the Red Sox television market on ESPN2.
