Jamal Coombs-McDaniel

Just a few weeks after being busted for weed, Jamal Coombs-McDaniel is transferring from the UConn Huskies men’s basketball program.

Here’s the release:

STORRS, Conn. – University of Connecticut sophomore Jamal Coombs-McDaniel has been granted permission to speak to other schools and will be transferring from the University, it was announced by Head Coach Jim Calhoun Thursday afternoon.

Coombs-McDaniel is in the process of completing the spring academic semester at UConn.

“Jamal and I met recently and, although he loves the program, he would like more playing time,” said Calhoun. “He and I both agree that he may have more opportunity for that playing time in another program. He was a very important part of our national championship this season and I know is capable of great success in the future. We wish Jamal the best of luck athletically and academically where ever he decides to continue his college career.”

Coombs-McDaniel competed in 75 games over the past two seasons for the Huskies, averaging 4.5 points per contest. In the 2010-11 campaign, he played in all 41 games and averaged 5.6 points, 6.9 per contest in BIG EAST play

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 5/4

Ervin Santana (L), Josh Beckett (R)

The Boston Red Sox will look for their fourth straight win overall and their seventh straight this season against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim tonight at Fenway Park, weather permitting.

First pitch for tonight’s game is at 7:10 p.m. and the game will be televised by NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Angels television market, you can catch the game on FoxSports West. If you don’t live in either market, you’re in luck as you can also watch the game on ESPN or online at ESPN3.com. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Here’s the press release from the Red Sox regarding the inclement weather in the area:

The current weather forecast in the vicinity of Fenway Park calls for scattered rain showers during the afternoon and evening hours. Conditions are expected to improve as the evening progresses. All Fenway Park gates will open as regularly scheduled at 5:40 p.m. with a limited opening on Yawkey Way at 5:10 p.m. The Red Sox are hopeful that tonight’s game against the Los Angeles Angels, which is scheduled to start at 7:10 p.m., will be played. However, the Red Sox want to alert our fans to the current forecast and to the possibility of delay.

Josh Beckett has regained his form of past years in five starts in 2011. In those five starts, he is 2-1 with a 2.65 ERA. He’s made one start against the Angels this season, picking up a no decision back back on 4/21 after allowing two runs in eight innings. He’s made 11 career starts against the Halos and is 3-4 with a 4.28 ERA. Six of those starts have come at Fenway where he is 1-2 with a 4.89 ERA.

Ervin Santana looks to get a rare win for his team against the Red Sox. He’s made six starts this season and is 1-3 with a 4.89 ERA. He’s made one start against the Red Sox this season, taking the loss on 4/23 when he allowed five runs in seven innings. He’s made nine career starts against the Red Sox and is 2-3 with a 4.58 ERA. Six of those starts have come at Fenway where he is 1-2 with a 4.58 ERA.

Glen Miller Promoted To Assistant Coach For UConn Men

STORRS, Conn – The University of Connecticut announced Wednesday the naming of Glen Miller to the position of Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach. Miller served as the Director of Men’s Basketball Administration for the 2010-11 season.

UConn Men's Basketball“I am so happy to be able to move Glen into the position of assistant coach,” said head coach Jim Calhoun. “Glen is an exceptional teacher of the game of basketball and I am excited that he will be able to get back on the court for us this year.”

“I am thrilled to be back on the court coaching and teaching and also back on the road recruiting,” said Miller. ” I enjoyed the past year being back here at UConn and hope that I can continue to have a positive impact in an assistant coach spot.”

He led Connecticut College to unprecedented success, culminating in a 28-1 campaign in 1998-99, advancing to the NCAA Division III Final Four and No. 3 final national ranking. He left to become the head coach at Brown University in the Ivy League, spending seven seasons in Providence (1999-2006). He was named the head coach at the University of Pennsylvania in 2006, leading the Quakers to the Ivy League Championship and the NCAA Tournament in 2006-07 and spent three full seasons and part of a fourth at Penn (2006-2009). Miller compiled a record of 233-209 in his 17 seasons as a head coach.
