New York, October 5, 2011 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that defenseman Tim Erixon has been recalled from the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League (AHL), while forward Sean Avery has been assigned to Connecticut.  In addition, defenseman Marc Staal has been placed on injured reserve.

CT WhaleErixon, 20, registered two assists with a plus-three rating and 10 penalty minutes in five preseason contests with the Rangers prior to his assignment to Connecticut on Saturday.  He tallied his first points as a Blueshirt with two assists, including one on the power play, at HC Sparta Praha on Friday.  Erixon made his first appearance as a Ranger in the team’s preseason opener on September 21 vs. New Jersey at Albany, NY.

The 6-2, 190-pounder recorded five goals and 19 assists for 24 points, along with 40 penalty minutes with Skelleftea HC of the Swedish Elite League (SEL) last season.  He established SEL career-highs in games played, assists and points while skating in his third full season in Sweden’s top professional league.  Erixon tied for fifth on the team in assists and eighth in points, and ranked fifth on the club in penalty minutes.  He also tied for fifth on the team in playoff goals (three) and assists (five), and sixth in points (eight) while establishing playoff career-highs in games played (18), goals, assists, points, and penalty minutes (12).

The Rangers now have 23 players remaining on their active roster, including two goaltenders, eight defensemen and 13 forwards.  The Blueshirts will begin their 2011-12 regular season schedule on Friday, October 7 vs. the Los Angeles Kings at Stockholm, Sweden (1:00 p.m. ET), as part of the 2011 Compuware NHL Premiere.

Francona To Broadcast First Two Games of ALCS; Stops By The Big Show To Talk About Season

Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona walks back to the dugout after visiting with the home plate umpire between the sixth and seventh innings of their MLB American League baseball game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts in this file image from September 30, 2009. Francona's eight-year run as Red Sox manager ended September 30, 2011 when the team announced he was not returning next season. Francona, nicknamed Tito, led the Red Sox to the World Series title in 2004 -- ending a championship drought dating back to 1918 - and again in 2007, but speculation about his future increased after the Red Sox missed this season's playoffs after a dramatic late season collapse. Picture taken September 30, 2009.

Former Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona will find himself back in baseball, albeit temporarily for now as he’s been dubbed by FOX to broadcast the first two games of the ALCS. Tim McCarver is out with a medical issue so Tito will be filling in.

Here’s the release courtesy of Fang’s Bites:

MLB ON FOX lead analyst Tim McCarver will be unable to work ALCS Games 1 and 2 this weekend due what is expected to be a short-term medical issue. McCarver is having a minor heart-related procedure performed late this week and is expected to return to the booth in time for ALCS Game 3 next Tuesday. Former Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona, who guided that team to World Championships in 2004 and 2007, will take McCarver’s place alongside MLB ON FOX lead play-by play announcer Joe Buck.

Francona was also on The Big Show on WEEI 93.7 FM this afternoon.

He made his first public comments since his press conference on Friday night earlier on WEEI. He talked about the issues that were going on with the team, what he felt ultimately led to the decision to leave, addressed the reports of drinking in the clubhouse and more. Tito also talks about the surprise phone call he got from a former Red Sox player after the announcement on Friday.

You can listen to the entire interview below:

{mp3remote}http://audio.weei.com/hosting/media/weei/1598200/bs-francona-1005-weei.mp3{/mp3remote}

Now my question to everyone out there in Red Sox Nation is this.

Will you tune in to watch the games just to listen to Francona? Or will you skip it entirely since our boys aren’t playing?

Let us know in the comments.

Patriots Make Practice Squad Changes

In The Red Zone

The New England Patriots have some changes to their practice squad during Week 5 preparations for the New York Jets.

They re-signed S Ross Ventrone back to the practice squad.  Ventrone has bounced back and fourth between the squad, the 53-man roster and being released/re-signed for parts of two seasons now.

In addition to Ventrone coming back the team announced they signed CB Sterling Moore, an undrafted free agent out of SMU, who spent part of this year on the Oakland Raiders practice squad.

To make room on the practice squad for Moore, the team released CB Josh Victorian.

Red Sox News & Notes – 10/5

Sunset at Diamond Head October 3, 2011

So I’ll be here in Hawai’i (sunset pictures from Ala Moana Park and Diamond Head) for another week or so and that means you might have to see pictures occasionally that I’ve been taking while I’m out here.

Obviously, it was another day without the beloved Boston Red Sox playing baseball. We won’t get that around any parts of Red Sox Nation until about 135 days (give or take a few). Yes I know that sucks but them’s the breaks of having a team fall apart in front of you.

However, one of the teams who played an outside part in the demise of the local nine, the Tampa Bay Rays, was eliminated yesterday by the Texas Rangers as former Red Sox third baseman Adrian Beltre hit three home runs.

But what strikes me is a quote that Beltre gave after the game (quote courtesy of @redsox1234):

“I love it here. Great chemistry. Everyone roots for everyone else. I was never on a team like that before.”

Strong words folks considering on the outside, the 2010 Red Sox looked pretty solid as a team. Sure the injuries took a toll on them last year as they did this year but that’s a pretty damning quote in my opinion. Maybe Beltre was just pissed from the all head rubbing he got last year.

But it really makes you wonder that if this was happening last year, how bad was it this year?

Three Red Sox Farmhands In Top 20 Eastern League Prospects By Baseball America

Baseball America is busy right now putting together its top 20 prospects lists by league now that the minor league baseball season is over. They got it started with the Arizona League, the Gulf Coast League, Appalachian League, Pioneer League, the Northwest LeagueNY/Penn League, the Midwest League, the South Atlantic League, California League, Carolina League and Florida State League.

Boston Red SoxNow it’s time to take a look at where any Red Sox farmhands ranked in the top 20 of the Eastern League where the Portland Sea Dogs play.

The Red Sox had three farmhands in the top 20 as third baseman Will Middlebrooks (8th), catcher Ryan Lavarnway (15th) and outfielder Chih-Hsien Chiang (18th).

Middlebrooks was 5th round draft choice by the Red Sox back in 2007 out of high school. He spent most of the 2011 season with the Sea Dogs before his promotion to Triple-A. In 96 games for the Sea Dogs, Middlebrooks hit  .302 with 18 home runs, 80 RBIs and six stolen bases. In 16 games with the Pawtucket Red Sox, Middlebrooks hit .161 with two home runs, eight RBIs and three stolen bases. When you combine his stats along with four games with the Lowell Spinners on a rehab assignment, he hit .285 with 23 home runs, 94 RBIs and 10 stolen bases in 116 games.

Lavarnway was a 6th round draft choice of the Red Sox out of Yale in 2008. He split his time with the Sea Dogs and PawSox before his promotion to the big club late in August.  In 55 games with the Sea Dogs, he hit .284 with 14 home runs and 38 RBIs. In 61 games with the PawSox, he hit .295 with 18 home runs, 55 RBIs and had one stolen base. In his 17 games with the Red Sox, he hit .231 with two home runs and eight RBIs. When you combine his minor league stats,  he hit .290 with 32 home runs, 93 RBIs and a stolen base.

Chiang was signed as an international free agent out of Taiwan by the Red Sox back in 2005. He played 88 games for the Sea Dogs hitting .340 with 18 home runs, 76 RBIs and six stolen bases. He was traded by the Red Sox to the Seattle Mariners in the Erik Bedard deal.

Our final look on a top 20 involving Red Sox farmhands will come on Friday when the International League top 20 is released.

In The Red Zone – 10/4

In The Red Zone

Well this Sunday was better than last Sunday and it also helped heal up the wounds of Wednesday so all in all it was a good day as the New England Patriots went into Oakland and came out with the win over the Raiders.

Defensively this team is still a sieve just gushing yardage in the opponents passing game.  At least when the other team runs the Patriots seem to hold their ground.  Two weeks in a row they faced the leagues leading rusher and both times they held him to less than 80 yards rushing or roughly 30 yards below their average at the time of the meeting.

Offensively they did enough to win as Tom Brady was pretty average on Sunday despite climbing another notch on the all-time touchdown pass list.

It was good to see old friend Richard Seymour on Sunday especially when his hyped up play ending up giving New England 30 of the 80 yards they needed to score on their opening drive.  He ended up being flagged at least 3 times on the day and his team had 9 penalties accepted on them.

Next week should be interesting as the New York Jets come to town.  It will be their third consecutive road game and they won’t be happy after losing the previous two games at Oakland and Baltimore.

When the team’s match up on Sunday it will be strength on strength and weakness on weakness or in other words the Patriots offense vs. the Jets defense and the Jets offense vs. the Patriots defense.

It is an all important division game “The Razor” is already sold out and the crowd should be jacked up for Rex Ryan and Gang Green.  I’m sure the Patriots will be.

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

New England head coach Bill Belichick had his weekly day after media meeting about Sunday’s game.

Patriots WR Deion Branch spoke with the mid day crew Monday for WEEI’s Patriots Monday.

DT Vince Wilfork played 107 NFL games without registering a single interception.  In the last three games he has gotten 2 INT’s.  Once again when he snagged the ball against Oakland he proved hard to take down as he rumbled for a 19-yard return.  Wilfork is now second on the team in INT’s this year behind CB Kyle Arrington who has 3.

WR Wes Welker had another huge game with 9 catches for 158 yards receiving.  He is on pace to shatter Hall of Fame WR Jerry Rice’s single season yardage mark by about 600 yards.

Welker admits this is the best he has ever played in his career.

QB Tom Brady threw a pair of TD passes on Sunday and he tied Peyton Manning for throwing at least 2 TD passes in 13 consecutive games.

Brady also passed his idol, Joe Montana for 9th on the all-time TD pass list with 274.  He is one away from tying former teammate Vinnie Testaverde for 8th with 275.

Connecticut native, TE Aaron Hernandez missed his second game Sunday with the sprained MCL he suffered against San Diego.  It was thought he’d be out one to two weeks so if that projection is accurate he should be on the practice field this week and on schedule for a Sunday return against the New York Jets.

In addition to Hernandez players who missed the game Sunday were Albert Haynesworth, Mike Wright, Ras-I Dowling, Leigh Bodden and Sebastian Vollmer.  This team could really use Dowling and Bodden in the secondary, hopefully they’re healing up and making progress towards playing on Sunday.

S Patrick Chung returned after missing the Buffalo game with a thumb injury and he made an impact in his return.

WR Taylor Price was dressed for the first time this season against Oakland after missing the first three weeks with a hamstring injury.

LB Jerod Mayo reportedly has a sprained MCL and could miss up to 6 weeks, this is going to hurt.  He suffered a similar injury in 2009 and only missed 3 weeks.

Patriot injuries of note from Sunday in Oakland are: Mayo (MCL), RB Danny Woodhead (ankle), LB Rob Ninkovich (cramping), C Dan Connolly (neck) and DL Kyle Love (ankle).  Most, with the exception of Mayo, should be okay for Sunday’s game against the Jets.

Christopher Gasper says there is no evidence that the Patriots are better than last year.

Shalise Manza Young writes that New England successfully contained the NFL’s leading rusher for a second week in a row.

She also asked should the Patriots replace Chad Ochocinco with Randy Moss?

The Globe’s Patriots Notebook

The Patriots were able to keep former mate Richard Seymour from making a difference.

Mass Live’s Nick Underhill writes that the Patriots need to start using rookie RB Stevan Ridley more.  Ridley racked up 96 yards rushing on just 10 carries against the Raiders.

Patriots locker room quick hits from ESPNBoston.com

Oakland QB Jason Campbell sites “bonehead play” as the Raiders undoing on Sunday.

One more time I want to mention the “Black Hole” and the Raiders organization for a couple of cool things.  First off the Raiders held a moment of silence prior to kickoff for Myra Kraft, the late wife of Patriots owner Robert Kraft.

The second acknowledgement is for the fans of the “Black Hole” who welcomed Robert Kraft as he went on the field during the pregame warm ups.  They gave him a nice ovation and Kraft went over and talked to the fans and signed some autographs.

For an organization that gets a bad rep about a lot of things these were really classy acts towards an opponent.

New England will be rocking the old school circa 1985 red uniform jerseys and Pat Patriot helmets Sunday for the only time this season.

New England plays their AFC East rival New York Jets Sunday at 4:15 p.m. at the Razor.  Look for the Sox & Dawgs “In The Red Zone Game Preview” available on Friday morning.
