Rangers Recall Newbury from Whale

New York, January 15, 2012 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that forward Kris Newbury has been recalled from the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League (AHL).

CT WhaleNewbury, 29, has registered 15 goals and 21 assists for 36 points, along with 80 penalty minutes in 30 games this season.  He leads Connecticut in goals, points and shots on goal (108), is tied for the team lead in assists and penalty minutes, and is tied for third in power play goals (four).  He is also tied for ninth in the AHL in points, and is tied for 14th in the league in goals and assists.  Newbury posted a season-high, eight-game point streak from December 16 vs. Bridgeport to January 2 at Portland, registering 17 points (five goals, 12 assists) over the span.  He began the season with a hat trick in the season opener on October 8 at Adirondack.  Newbury skated in six games with the Rangers earlier this season, making his season debut with the Blueshirts on October 18 at Vancouver.

The Brampton, Ontario native was acquired by the Rangers from Detroit, in exchange for Jordan Owens on March 3, 2010.  He was originally selected by the San Jose Sharks as a fifth round choice, 139th overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

Brady Sets Records, Patriots Blow Out Broncos 45-10

Tom Brady #12 of the New England Patriots reacts after he threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Rob Gronkowski #87 in the second quarter against the Denver Broncos during their AFC Divisional Playoff Game at Gillette Stadium on January 14, 2012 in Foxboro, Massachusetts.

The Denver Broncos came into Foxboro with hopes of upsetting the New England Patriots and once again send the Patriots home earlier than expected in the post season.  But with all the hype about Broncos QB Tim Tebow the sporting world seemed to forget about a man named Tom Brady.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.  Brady plays best when he is pissed off.  He needs a chip on shoulder it pushes him.  If there isn’t one he will make one up. This time the chip was disrespect, I am willing to bet Brady has felt disrespected with all the attention given to Tebow when Brady is a three time champion, a two time most valuable player and a sure fire Hall of Famer.

I think it’s safe to say no one will ever forget about Brady again.  He just absolutely annihilated the Broncos from start to finish, he was 26 of 34 for 363 yards with 6 TD passes and 1 INT.  He set one NFL record, tied another and he and the team broke several other team marks in this one sided blow out as well.

But it just wasn’t Brady and his multitude of offensive weapons that did the damage in the 45-10 win over Denver on Saturday at Gillette Stadium.  The Patriots defense actually showed up sacking Tebow a half dozen times and stopping the Broncos running backs for several negative yard plays.

While Brady and Rob Gronkowski were setting records, Aaron Hernandez was showing his versatility by playing running back, as did Julian Edelman with time on both sides.  The defense led by Rob Ninkovich, Brandon Spikes, Jerod Mayo, Devin McCourty and host of others was really, really good.

The best part is that the Patriots will once again be at home next weekend playing against either the Houston Texans or the Baltimore Ravens for the AFC Championship.

The spread (Patriots minus 13 1/2) WAS covered.  The over/under (50 1/2) WAS COVERED.  I TOOK the points (Broncos) and took the OVER.  I am now 10-6-1 vs. the spread and 13 of 17 calling the under/over.

Broncos won the toss and deferred.  It’s only the second game this season that New England has started with the ball.  The other was Week 3 in Buffalo a 34-31 loss.

The Broncos lead the all-time series 27-18 including playoffs (2-1).

New England and Denver have now met three times in the playoffs with the home team winning each time.

The Patriots are 9-9 as the home team in the series.

Since Gillette Stadium opened in 2002, New England is 75-15 at home including the playoffs.

The Patriots are 12-3 at home in the playoffs all-time. They are 8-2 in the post season at Gillette Stadium.

Overall in the playoffs they are 22-15, they are 9-6 in the Divisional Round.

This is the first time the teams have had a playoff game in Foxboro.

New England has won 9 consecutive games after a 2 game losing streak.  It is their longest win streak of the season.

Patriots set a team record with 45 points most ever scored in a post season game.

Bill Belichick’s 191 wins are good for 9th all-time.  Chuck Knox, who coached the Rams, Redskins and Seahawks, is 8th all-time with 193.

He is now tied for 4th in post season coaching wins with Steelers legend Chuck Noll with 16. Long time Redskins coach Joe Gibbs is 3rd with 17.

Belichick is 5-10 vs. the Denver in his career.  He is 5-6 against them as the head coach in New England and that includes the playoffs (1-1).

Tom Brady is 3-6 vs. the Broncos including 1-1 in the playoffs.

He is now 15-5 in the post season.  He is now second all time behind his idol, Joe Montana who is 1st with 16 post season wins.

Brady started the game tied for 5th most post season TD passes with Terry Bradshaw (30) and then surpassed Kurt Warner (31) and Dan Marino (32) and is now all alone 3rd all-time with 36.  Brett Favre is 2nd with 44 TD passes in the post season.

Brady set a NFL record with five TD passes in one half of a playoff game.

He also tied Daryle Lamonica and Steve Young with 6 TD passes in one playoff game.

He even got off a quick kick near the end of the game.  That wasn’t the first time he did that either.

WR Wes Welker now has catches in 99 consecutive games including playoffs, 82 as a Patriot.  The last time Welker did not have a catch in a game was 12/24/05 as a Dolphin.

A fan that felt he was being ignored scored two tickets to the game and more from Patriots WR Chad Ochocinco.

Good Morning, America; The New Yorker; GQ; People and Time Magazine all had media credentials for tonight’s game.

New England scored on its first drive for only second time in the last 12 games.

The Patriots were 3 of 6 in 3rd down efficiency with no fourth down attempts.  The Broncos were 7 of 18 on 3rd down and 2 for 3 on 4th down attempts.

New England was 5 of 6 in the red zone and 1 for 2 in goal to go, while Denver was 1 for 3 in the red zone and 1 for 2 in goal to go.

This is the first time Denver has made the playoffs since the 2005 season.

Denver is 18-16 in the post season now.

The Broncos are 2-2 in Gillette Stadium.

Denver is the only team to beat New England twice in the playoffs.

John Fox is 82-80 in his 10th season as a head coach; he was 8-8 in his 1st season with Denver and 73-71 in 9 seasons with Carolina.  In the playoffs he is 6-4 overall (5-3 with Carolina; 1-1 with Denver) for an overall record of 88-84.

Fox is 1-4 vs. New England including one Super Bowl (0-1).  He is 0-2 with Denver and 1-2 with Carolina.

Tim Tebow is now 1-1 in the playoffs in his 2-year career.

He is 0-2 vs. New England in his career with both decisions coming this season.

Former Patriots and current Broncos LS Lonnie Paxton did not make the trip for the playoff game.  His wife is 5 months pregnant and is battling a very serious pregnancy issue that could kill her.

Gene Steratore was the game referee.  Did you know Steratore is also a Big East basketball ref?  He was supposed to call the UConn/Notre Dame earlier in the day but passed on it for the playoff game.

The temp at kickoff was 28, windy and cold with a wind chill of 8 degrees.

Attendance: 68,756 at Gillette Stadium, Foxboro MA.

Norfolk Admirals 4, Connecticut Whale 2

By Brian Ring

Norfolk, VA, January 14, 2012 – The Connecticut Whale were defeated by the Norfolk Admirals, 4-2, Saturday night at the Norfolk Scope before a crowd of 7,227. Richard Panik scored twice and Matt Fornataro tallied the game-winner for Norfolk, while Aaron Voros and Kelsey Tessier accounted for the pair of Whale goals.

CT WhaleThe loss extended the Whale’s current skid to six-straight games (0-4-1-1).

“A coverage mistake, a turnover where we didn’t support anyone on the rink, all leaving the zone,” said Whale head coach Ken Gernander of breakdowns that cost the Whale. “Some big penalties to some key people really took the flow out of things.”

Panik accounted for the only scoring of the first period, as he received a pass from Evan Oberg in the high slot and fired a shot past sprawling Whale goaltender Cam Talbot (34 saves) 13:45 into the frame. Tyler Johnson also picked up an assist on the score.

Panik would score again to increase the Admirals’ lead to 2-0 10:20 into the second period, scoring in similar fashion as he wristed a shot past Talbot for his eighth of the season.

The Whale would break through on Tessier’s seventh goal of the year with 4:28 left in the second period, his shot deflecting off of a Norfolk defender and past Admirals’ goaltender Dustin Tokarski (24 saves). The goal was assisted by defenseman Sam Klassen, for his first AHL point.

Voros evened the game at two apiece 49 seconds later at 16:21, with his second tally in as many nights versus Norfolk. Sean Avery won a clean draw to Voros, who promptly wristed it through Tokarski for the equalizer.

Fornataro would give the Admirals a 3-2 lead that they would not relinquish 4:14 into the third period, his shot beating Talbot with the game-winning assists going to Mike Kostka and Cory Conacher.

The Admirals would seal their triumph with 2:39 remaining in the third period, as Mike Angelidis tallied his seventh of the season to put Norfolk up 4-2. Mark Barberio recorded the lone assist, his third in two games against the Whale.

“We’ll get a little bit of rest for our guys that logged big minutes, and then hopefully Tuesday prepare for a big game in Portland,” said Gernander.

Connecticut will head to Portland for the second time this season to take on the Pirates Wednesday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center (6:30).

The Whale will return home Friday, Jan. 20, when they host the St. John’s IceCaps at the XL Center.

Tickets to the January 20 game, the January 21 CWHL double-header vs. Norfolk, Trading Card Weekend and CT Hockey Hall of Fame Night, and all 2011-12 Whale home games, are on sale now at the Public Power Ticket Office at the XL Center, as well as on-line at www.ctwhale.com and through TicketMaster Charge-by-phone at 1-800-745-3000.

Video: Tom Brady, New England Patriots Punter?

New England Patriots punter Zoltan Mesko may have some competition at the punter spot during the week of preparation for next week’s AFC Championship Game and it’s from an unlikely source.

UConn Men Snap Notre Dame’s Home Winning Streak in 67-53 Win

In 2009, the UConn Huskies men’s basketball team went into Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center and snapped the Notre Dame Fighting Irish’s 45-game winning streak. This time around, UConn was looking to snap Notre Dame’s 29-game home winning streak.

And that’s exactly what they did as Shabazz Napier led the Huskies with 16 points in their 67-53 win over the Irish in front of 9,149 on Saturday morning/afternoon in South Bend, IN.

With the win, UConn improves to 14-3 (4-2 Big East) on the season. The Irish fall to 11-7 (3-2).

UConn's Shabazz Napier drives past Notre Dame guard Eric Atkins in the first half. After going scoreless in the win over West Virginia, Napier stepped up to lead the Huskies. Besides his 16 points, he added five assists. Alex Oriakhi may have had his best game of the season as he added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Andre Drummond didn’t play all that well but did turn things up in the second half and finished with a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds. He also had two blocks. Roscoe Smith also had a nice game off the bench with 10 points and six rebounds. Jeremy Lamb had a tough go of things on the offensive end finishing with six points but led the Huskies with seven assists.

Eric Atkins led all scorers in the game with 20 points for the Irish. Scott Martin chipped in with 12 points and nine rebounds.

This game was tale of two halfs. In the first half, Notre Dame had more three-pointers than they did two point field goals. In the second half, they couldn’t buy a three-pointer as UConn made some great adjustments at halftime on the defensive end while running their offense to almost perfection in the second half.

The Irish jumped out to a 8-6 lead early on behind threes from Atkins and Jerian Grant. UConn followed that up with a 6-0 run led by Napier and Lamb. Notre Dame would fight back though as the same duo of Atkins and Grant would hit threes to tie the game up at 14 all.

After a layup by Oriakhi, Atkins would hit a three to put Notre Dame up one. Jack Cooley would add two free throws to increase their lead to three at 21-19. After the two teams traded baskets, Alex Dragicevich would give Notre Dame a five point lead at 23-18. Four straight points by the Huskies would cut the lead to one and that’s where it was at halftime with the Irish enjoying a 25-24 lead.

Early on in the second half, the two teams would exchange the lead before a basket by Oriakhi would give UConn the lead for good at 31-29 with 16:05 remaining. Over the next six minutes, the Huskies would go on a 9-2 run to increase their lead to nine.

They would continue to build it from there as the Irish went cold from the floor due to those adjustments that UConn made at the half along with a few runs to push their lead all the way up to a 18 points.

With Tyler Olander battling a sore heel along with Ryan Boatright out due to another NCAA investigation, it was nice to see some other players besides the stars help the Huskies.

Roscoe Smith has been battling for minutes all season long and with Olander out, he was given a chance to play at the four. It worked out well for him and head coach Jim Calhoun as Smith gives them more speed at the power forward which helps on both ends of the floor.

Oriakhi has struggled at times this season as well as he was in the same boat as Smith as far as minutes go. But hopefully this solid effort by Oriakhi gives him some confidence as the season goes on.

The Huskies are off until Wednesday when they return home to Gampel Pavilion to host the Cincinnati Bearcats. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be nationally televised on ESPN2.
