Springfield Falcons 3, Connecticut Whale 0

By Brian Ring

March 17, 2012 – The Connecticut Whale were defeated by the Springfield Falcons, 3-0, Saturday night at the XL Center. Springfield goaltender Mike Clemente, making just his second professional start, recorded his first pro shutout with 27 saves.

CT WhaleNick Drazenovic scored and had an assist to lead the Falcons offense, while the Whale were blanked for the third time this season.

“It was disappointing,” said Whale head coach Ken Gernander, who felt the team did not have enough urgency in the first two periods.

“Not until the third period, but by then we were short-staffed and we’d already given them the lead.”

The first period was scoreless, with special teams playing a large role in a frame that saw large chunks of the game played in transition. The Whale negated three Springfield power-play opportunities, while Clemente helped the visitors to kill off two Connecticut extra-man chances.

Nick Drazenovic gave the Falcons the first lead of the game 7:31 into the second period, converting on the power-play for his eighth goal of the season. Wade MacLeod fed Drazenovic from across the slot, with Drazenovic one-timing the pass past Whale goaltender Chad Johnson (20 saves). Dalton Prout picked up the secondary assist on the goal.

Springfield would make the goal stand up as the game-winner, as they went on to score twice more in the period while continuing to limit quality Whale chances.

The Falcons would make it 2-0 at 14:21 of the second period, when Matt Calvert snapped a shot over the glove of Johnson for his 15th goal of the season, from Brent Regner and Drazenovic.

Maksim Mayorov would send Springfield into the third period with a 3-0 lead, as he sent a wrist shot through the legs of Whale defenseman Wade Redden, and in off of Johnson’s right pad, for his ninth goal three minutes later. The score came unassisted.

That would be all of the scoring for Springfield, who won their second straight game after defeating Portland on Friday night.

The Whale are back in action Sunday afternoon at the XL Center, finishing their three-games-in-three-days slate with afternoon tilt against the Portland Pirates (3:00).

Video: UConn Women Spank Prairie View A&M 83-47 To Advance in NCAA Tourney

The UConn Huskies women’s basketball team came into this 2012 NCAA Tournament as an underdog. When the NCAA Selection Show was held last Monday, there was barely a mention of UConn other than when they were announced as a No. 1 seed.

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis of UConn led the Huskies with 21 points angainst Lereahn Washington and Prairie View A&M.So hopefully the Huskies can use that to their advantage on their way to a potential 8th national title. They opened up the 2012 NCAA Tournament on Saturday with the Prairie View A&M Panthers.

The Huskies were able to use the height they have to their advantage and a strong second half defensive effort helped them to a 83-47 win over the Panthers in front of 4,563 at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, CT.

UConn advances to the second round on Monday where they’ll take on the Kansas State Wildcats.

Kaleena Mosqueda Lewis led the way for the Huskies (30-4) with 21 points. Those 21 points tie former Husky and current Cincinnati coach Jamelle Elliott for the most by a freshman making their NCAA Tournament debut. KML also led the Huskies with seven rebounds.

Bria Hartley added 18 points, five rebounds and three assists while Stefanie Dolson scored all 15 of her points in the first half. She also had a little bit of an incident towards the end of the game when she was kneed in her private lady parts. Kelly Faris had a great all around game as usual with six points, six rebounds and a team-high eight assists.

Latia Williams paced the Panthers (17-16) with 20 points. JaQuandria Williams added nine points while Kiara Etienne had eight. Larissa Scott led Prairie View A&M with seven rebounds to go along with her four points.

Here are the highlights:

Patriots Fans, Say Hello to Brandon Lloyd

The New England Patriots have signed free agent WR Brandon Lloyd to a three-year, $12 million deal.  Lloyd is a former member of the Denver Broncos and St. Louis Rams and has played for offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels in both places.

St. Louis Rams wide receiver Brandon Lloyd sits on the bench during the fourth quarter of an NFL football game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011, in St. Louis.Translated that means he knows the offense and is a legit deep threat for QB Tom Brady.

Lloyd, 30, is a Kansas City, MO native who played his college ball at Illinois.  He was a 4th round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in the 2003 NFL Draft.

The former Pro Bowl and All Pro selection has 31 career TD catches while also playing for Washington and Chicago.

More Free Agents Come to Foxboro

The New England Patriots are once again adding depth through solid veteran players without breaking the bank to do so.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, right, and receiver Anthony Gonzalez watch practice as the quarterbacks and receivers run drills during the NFL team's football training camp in Anderson, Ind. , Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011.Late Saturday afternoon it was learned that New England signed former Indianapolis Colts WR Anthony Gonzalez to a contract whose terms have no been disclosed.  Gonzalez, a first round pick out of Ohio State in 2007, has had three successive seasons cut short by injuries after having solid rookie and sophomore campaigns catching passes from Peyton Manning.

Gonzalez was placed on the season ending IR in both 2009 and 2010 and only saw action in 8 games in 2011.  When healthy the 27-year old slot receiver is extremely dangerous.  The low risk, high reward signing is insurance for the team in case WR Wes Welker decides not to report to camp and he adds depth behind Welker should the Pro Bowler either sign his franchise tender or get a long term deal.

The Gonzalez signing could also possibly push Julian Edelman to the other side of the ball.  Edelman, a quarterback in college that New England converted to wide receiver, has played several games in the secondary and has shown a penchant for playing on that side of the ball.

In addition to Gonzalez, the Patriots also signed free agent defensive end/outside linebacker Trevor Scott, formerly of the Oakland Raiders.  The 27-year old Scott reportedly received a one-year contract.  The Potsdam NY native played his college ball for University of Buffalo and was a 6th round pick by Oakland in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Scott went on the IR in November of 2010 with a torn ACL and although he played in all 16 games in 2011 the injury still hampered him.  At 6 foot 5, 255 pounds Scott has the versatility to play the line or as a linebacker and he could fill the role that Mark Anderson played last season or if Anderson returns he provides more depth at two positions.

The Patriots are also reportedly taking a visit this weekend from former Washington Redskins safety LaRon Landry who is reported to be high on Bill Belichick’s wish list.

Video: UConn’s Stefanie Dolson Takes Knee To Her Private Lady Parts

We often see men’s college basketball players get hit or kicked in their private parts, especially when they take a charge. But we rarely ever see a women’s college basketball player get hit in her private area.

Well that’s exactly what happened to UConn Huskies women’s sophomore center Stefanie Dolson on Saturday afternoon in UConn’s 83-47 win over the Prairie View A&M Panthers on Saturday afternoon.

Dolson was okay after the incident and was seen laughing with her teammates after it happened.

CT WhaleErixon, 21, has tallied eight points (one goal and seven assists) in his last nine games with Connecticut, including a power play goal in a 3-2 win last night against Bridgeport.  In the month of March, Erixon has recorded one goal and five assists in six contests.  He has registered three goals and 30 assists for 33 points, along with 36 penalty minutes and a plus-four rating in 43 games with the Whale this season.  Erixon leads all AHL rookie defensemen in assists and ranks third in points.  He also leads all team defensemen in points and assists, ranks third on Connecticut overall in assists and sixth in points.  Erixon has posted eight multi-point efforts, including a career-high, three-assist performance on November 23 vs. Portland, and recorded a season-high, four-game assist streak from February 4 at Hershey to February 11 at Manchester, tallying five assists over the span.  He registered an assist while making his AHL debut on November 2 at Bridgeport, and notched his first career AHL goal, a power play tally, on November 12 at St. John’s.

Erixon skated in 13 games over two stints with the Rangers earlier this season, having made his NHL debut on October 7 against Los Angeles as part of the 2011 NHL Premiere in Stockholm, Sweden.

The Port Chester, New York native was acquired by the Rangers from Calgary, along with a fifth round pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft (Shane McColgan), in exchange for Roman Horak and two, second round picks in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft (Markus Granlund, Tyler Wotherspoon) on June 1, 2011.  He was originally selected by Calgary as a first round choice, 23rd overall, in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

UConn Women’s 2012 NCAA First Round Pregame Quotes

UConn Huskies women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma along with senior Tiffany Hayes and Kelly Faris met with the members of the media assembled at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, CT on Friday.

Here’s what they had to say:

2012 NCAA Women's Final FourQuotes courtesy of UConn Athletics

Head Coach Geno Auriemma
Opening Statement

It’s the same at this time of the year. Each year doesn’t matter how many times you do it. Each year, the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament is a time when if you had a great year you get to add to it. If it’s an okay year you can make it a lot better. Every kid that’s part of the 64 teams that are playing is anxious to get started. Especially our kids because it’s been so long since the (Big East) tournament ended. I know the kids feel that way. We are anxious to play. I wish it were today.

On the 10 days between winning the Big East Championship and the NCAA Tournament and balancing time off with momentum

Ideally, it would have been great if we could have played a week ago on Saturday. That would have been better for us. Anytime you have a little momentum going and you are feeling good about your team and they are feeling good about themselves, you like to capitalize on it. Having to wait 10 days, it’s hard to sustain that. You have to really rely on the fact that it is the NCAA Tournament. You almost treat it like it is a fresh start so whatever happened in the regular season and whatever happened in the Big East tourney it’s gone. You put that away. It’s over and done with.

I don’t think any team that is playing this weekend is thinking about if they lost in their conference tournament. I don’t think that is a big part of what they are thinking. They are just thinking about winning one game. The first game is not usually easy to win because you haven’t play in so long. And, the engines are raring to go and you want to go and you want to go and want to play and you wait and wait and wait.

And then like Kelly [Faris] said, you show up at the game, you have to control your emotions a little bit. It’s one game and that’s what we are trying to take it as – one game on Saturday and then one game on Monday hopefully. You know nothing is guaranteed at this time of the year.

On Tiffany Hayes’ foot and how she has practiced

Those who have watched Tiffany play sees she falls down all the time but never gets hurt. What’s her pain threshold, she’s never hurt. The fact that she had to miss a week of practice means that she was really hurt. When people never get hurt, they don’t know how to handle it. So this past week has been kind of ‘What I do? How do I handle myself because I am never hurt?’ But In practice yesterday, for the first day she looked pretty good. We ran her in and out so she wasn’t out there the whole time. She did enough to be ready today and be ready for tomorrow. I couldn’t give you a percentage. I just know when is going to play and I assume she will play as well as she has in the past.

To see what Faris and Hayes had to say, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Kelly Faris, Junior, Guard

On the NCAA Tournament and the biggest concerns about Saturday’s game

For just about any team, it’s tournament time; it’s March Madness. So we are sitting around watching the guys play. We are excited. I think we came off a good end of the tournament (Big East) so it’s always good to start the last part of your season on a good note. I think in general we are good to go and like coach said, we wish it were today. We’ll be ready to go tomorrow. At this point, I really don’t have any concerns.

Maybe we’re too excited.

Tiffany Hayes, Senior, Guard

On her playing status for Saturday

Practice went well. My status for tomorrow is that I will be playing.

On the feel of this year’s NCAA Tournament
We are under the radar a little bit. I think there are still targets on our backs but at the same time it’s not the same as the other years. We are going into the tournament with the same excitement and the same feelings about it.

On playing in her final NCAA Tournament during her senior year

I try not to think about it. It’s sad. I don’t want to leave yet, but there are six games and we have to take it one game at a time. If you don’t win one, you go home and cut it short so we are just trying to play our hardest so we can play six more games.
