Patriots Re-Sign Branch, Brady Restructures Contract

The New England Patriots, who have been signing free agents like Bill Belichick had a Groupon, have dipped into the well and come back with one of their own as they re-sign WR Deion Branch.

New England Patriots wide receiver Deion Branch talks with teammates during practice on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012, in Indianapolis. The Patriots are scheduled to face the New York Giants in NFL football Super Bowl XLVI on Feb. 5.Branch, long one of QB Tom Brady’s favorite targets, is in his second stint with the Patriots after returning in a 2010 midseason trade with Seattle.  He originally was with New England from 2002-2005 before leaving for Seattle in a contract dispute for the 2006 season.

He played his college ball at Louisville and was taken by New England in the second round of the 2002 NFL Draft.  The former Super Bowl MVP received a one-year contract to remain in Foxboro.

In other news, it’s been learned through NFL sources by Mac’s football blog that Brady restructured his contract to free up another $7.2 million in cap space.  Brady reduced his salary for the 2012 season by nearly $5 million and combined it with his roster bonus as a signing bonus that will be prorated over the remaining three years on the contract.

At a guaranteed $975,000 salary for the season Brady is the best deal in the entire NFL.

Blake Parlett Reassigned to ECHL Greenville

HARTFORD, March 22, 2012:  Connecticut Whale general manager Jim Schoenfeld announced today that the parent New York Rangers have reassigned defenseman Blake Parlett from the Whale to its ECHL affiliate, the Greenville Road Warriors.

CT WhaleParlett, a second-year pro, had returned to the Whale from Greenville March 10 and played in four games in his latest AHL stint.  All told this season, Parlett has suited up for 54 games with the Whale, scoring four goals and adding 10 assists for 14 points while logging 34 penalty minutes.  In seven ECHL games with the Road Warriors, he has scored one goal and added three assists for four points, and is +3 with four penalty minutes.

Parlett signed with the Rangers as a free agent June 2, 2011, after playing last season with the Whale on an AHL contract.

The Whale are back in action tomorrow night, Friday, March 23, hosting the Portland Pirates at the XL Center in a 7:00 PM game.  Fans can take advantage of a special food combo deal, available for all remaining Whale regular-season Friday-night home games, at that game.  A hot dog and a 12-ounce soda can be purchased for only $5.  The Whale also play at home this Saturday night, March 24 at 7:00, locking horns with the Providence Bruins.

Tickets to all 2011-12 Whale home games are on sale now at the Public Power Ticket Office at the XL Center, as well as on-line at www.ctwhale.com and through TicketMaster Charge-by-phone at 1-800-745-3000.

Howard Baldwin Clarifies Recent Comments Regarding AEG, Re-affirms CT Whale Commitment to Playing 2012-13 Season at XL Center

The Jeff Jacobs column that recently appeared in the Hartford Courant was an accurate representation of the significant financial and business challenges that Whalers Sports & Entertainment faces in operating the Connecticut Whale under the current XL Center lease terms.  Some clarification needs to be added on our part, however, in terms of characterizing the working relationship between WSE and the AEG management of the XL Center.

CT WhaleOne thing that we did not do sufficiently in the course of our conversation with Jeff Jacobs was to emphasize that, while the financial terms of the XL Center lease agreement have been a significant burden to our business, the AEG staff have been excellent operational partners to work with.  Everyone responsible for assisting us in putting on the Whale games has been consistently responsive to our day-to-day needs and has given a top-notch effort in helping us to ensure that our games remain the best in local sports entertainment, and that the fan experience at Whale home games is unmatched.

It bears noting, too, that prior to the agreement with WSE to take over business operations of the Wolf Pack in September, 2010, AEG and Northland put significant effort and capital into building the Wolf Pack brand.  From continuing to make ticketing options more fan-friendly and affordable to putting considerable man-hours and energy into game-night entertainment and promotions, Northland/AEG did put plenty of resources behind the battle to make the Wolf Pack a success at the gate.

The deal to make WSE the business operator of the AHL team also was, at its essence, a move by AEG that was motivated by a genuine concern for the best interests of the franchise going forward, a change that was made with the aim of giving the team its best chance for business prosperity.  As we emphasized in our talk with Jeff, we entered into the terms of that agreement willingly and under no deception, so we certainly bear, and accept, a fair share of the blame for the fact the lease has become burdensome to WSE.  The bottom line is, we have learned much in our nearly two full seasons of operating the team, and we are as confident as ever that the Whale can have a great long-term future, if we can come to an agreement with AEG on a tweak of the financial model.  We have great confidence, also, in the keen business sense that the AEG braintrust possess, and that we will be able to agree on a re-made rent structure that makes good sense for all concerned.

There is one more season left on the Whale’s lease deal with the XL Center, and that is next AHL season, 2012-13.  We remain totally committed to negotiating a long-term agreement that makes financial sense for the Whale to be viable at the XL Center for years to come, as we continue our steadfast pursuit of our goal of bringing the Hartford hockey market to its greatest possible level of prominence.  That is the long-term vision, and we are optimistic that a deal can be reached soon that affords us not only that chance for long-term success, but also a better financial situation for the year remaining on our existing deal.  Regardless of whether or not any accommodation is made for next season, however, we are one-hundred percent committed to fulfilling the last season of our agreement, and guaranteeing that the Whale will play at the XL Center for the 2012-13 AHL season. We will honor our commitment to the great hockey fans of the Hartford market in good faith, and we will pour every ounce of our collective energy into good-faith negotiations to secure a long-term business deal that firmly solidifies, and enhances, the future of pro hockey in downtown Hartford.

Sincerely,

Howard Baldwin, Sr., Chairman/CEO

Red Sox Spring Training News & Notes – 3/22

Boston Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia tags out Pittsburgh Pirates' Matt Hague at the plate after Pirates pitcher Kevin Correia hit into a second-inning fielders choice during their spring training baseball game at McKechnie Field in Bradenton, Fla., Wednesday, March 21, 2012.

Giving up four runs against the Pittsburgh Pirates wasn’t exactly what Jon Lester had in mind yesterday when he took the mound for the Boston Red Sox. But it is what is.

Fortunately despite the numbers, Lester felt comfortable with his mechanics and did have a good curve and changeup. He left his fastball up in the zone on a few occasions. He ended up going just three innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out two.

Closer Andrew Bailey had a rough outing as well giving up two runs on three hits with two strikeouts. The two runs came on a home run from Nate McLouth. Franklin Morales made his spring debut and had a nice outing as he struck out one and walked one in an inning of work.

On the offensive side of things, Jarrod Saltalamacchia found himself struggling at the plate as he was 1-for-13 before getting two hits yesterday. His two hits were a double and a two-run homer. While we don’t worry about Salty at the plate because of what he brings behind it, it was nice to see him come alive.

There’s a report out there that Daniel Bard will probably not being in the rotation.

According to Sean McAdam of CSN New England, it’s likely that Bard will go back to his customary 8th inning role while Alfredo Aceves and Felix Doubront would be the final two starters in the rotation.

We all know how successful Aceves and Bard were out of the bullpen last year. Given that Aceves is a little more versatile than Bard in that he could start or relieve, if this happens comes as a shock to me.

Personally, I think Aceves is better suited to pitch out of the Red Sox bullpen. But I’m not a baseball evaluator, I’m just a blogger.

With the Red Sox taking on the New York Yankees tonight, we’ll be back later with tonight’s lineups and links from the day. But for now, enjoy the overnight links from the Boston media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Former Patriots head coach Ron Erhardt Passes Away at 80

RIP Ron Erhardt

Ron Erhardt, head coach of the New England Patriots from 1979-81, has passed away just three weeks after his 80th birthday.

Erhardt took over the Patriots after Chuck Fairbanks fled for Colorado following the 1978 home playoff loss to Houston.

In his first two seasons the team was a combined 19-13 and the 1980 team scored a then franchise record 441 points (not broken until 2007) but the team tanked in 1981 and finished 2-14.  Owner Billy Sullivan thought Erhardt “was just too nice a guy” and he was fired two days after the season ended.

After he left the Patriots, he was hired by Ray Perkins and the Giants to be their offensive coordinator.  He stayed on when Perkins left for the University of Alabama and, Erhardt’s former linebacker’s coach with the Patriots, Bill Parcells took over.  He helped lead the Giants offense to two Super Bowl titles.

Erhardt also coached with the Pittsburgh Steelers (offensive coordinator), New York Jets (offensive coordinator) and he was an assistant coach, then head coach and athletic director for North Dakota State University in the 1960’s and early 70’s before coming to Foxboro as backfield coach in 1973.

Mankins Had Post Super Bowl ACL Surgery

If you’re a New England Patriots fan and you‘ve ever said anything bad about Logan Mankins, I am now going to make you feel about yay high.

Logan Mankins #70 of the New England Patriots completes a drill before a game with the New York Giants at Gillette Stadium on September 1, 2011 in Foxboro, Massachusetts.During the Patriots AFC Division Playoff Game win over Denver, Mankins hurt his knee and left the game.  He later returned and played the remainder of the game and not much was thought about it.

The week of the AFC Championship Game against Baltimore Mankins never really saw the practice field, he could barely limp never mind walk.  The training staff and the team doctors couldn’t find anything wrong with his knee.  So Mankins played against Baltimore.

He pretty much repeated the process the two weeks prior to the Super Bowl against the New York Giants.  He was listed on the injury report and was limited in practice yet he played in the game.

After the Super Bowl players were getting their check out physicals and clearing out the lockers and Mankins knee was still too swollen to truly tell what the issue was.  After the swelling subsided, it turns out he had a partial tear of his ACL.

Now we all know the story of San Diego QB Phillip Rivers playing against the Patriots in a playoff game a week after having his ACL surgically repaired a few years ago. Mankins actually played about 2 and half games with the injury before undergoing surgery a few weeks ago.  He is expected to be ready for training camp.

I know he is one tough bastard, he’s mean and ornery, but to play like that really takes something especially at his size (6’4”, 310) and that he basically does hand to hand combat 60-70 times a game against someone just as big.

I guess it’s safe to say “The Legend of Logan Mankins” continues to grow in Foxboro.

Patriots Sign Allen; Lose Anderson and Green-Ellis

The New England Patriots signed free agent defensive back Will Allen on Wednesday.  Allen, a former Dolphin, got a reported one-year deal for just under $1 million.  He is expected to help bolster the defensive backfield, which had issues all through 2011.

Oakland Raiders wide receiver Louis Murphy (18) cannot hold on to the ball as Miami Dolphins cornerback Will Allen (25) defends during the second half of an NFL football game on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011, in Miami , FlaAllen, a Syracuse product, was a 1st round draft pick (22nd overall) in the 2001 NFL Draft by the New York Giants.  After four seasons, he moved onto the Dolphins as a free agent for 2006.

There was also some not so good news for the Patriots today as the Buffalo Bills signed DE Mark Anderson to a four-year $27.5 million contract after one season in Foxboro.  It calls for $9 million in guaranteed money.  It’s pretty safe to say that New England wasn’t going anywhere near the parameters of the deal offered by Buffalo.

Anderson led the team in sacks with Andre Carter as both registered 10 on the season.

The team also lost out on its top rusher BenJarvus Green-Ellis today as he signed a three-year contract with the Cincinnati Bengals.  The Lawfirm, was the last Patriots 1,000-yard rusher, which he did in 2010, and he also had back-to-back seasons of at least 10 TD’s when he had 13 in 2010 and 11 in 2011.  The 24 rushing TD’s were second in the NFL for the two-year period trailing only Arian Foster who had 26 for Houston.

Green-Ellis had 29 touchdowns in his Patriots career, 7th most in franchise history, he had six career 2 TD games and the team was 22-1 in games in which he had a TD.
