Wednesday Red Sox Mediocrity – 8/8

Matt Harrison (L), Josh Beckett (R)

After falling 6-3 last night, the Boston Red Sox look to take the series this afternoon in the rubber game of a three-game set with the Texas Rangers at historic Fenway Park.

First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. and will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Rangers television market, you can catch the game on FOX Sports Southwest. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

After having his last start skipped due to back spasms, Josh Beckett returns to the bump to make his 19th start of 2012. In his previous 18 starts, Beckett is 5-9 with a 4.54 ERA. He’s made two starts against the Rangers this season and is 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA (7 ER/14 IP). Overall in his career, Beckett has made 10 starts against the Rangers and is 3-4 with a 4.91 ERA. Four of those starts have come at the Fens where he is 0-2 with a 6.66 ERA.

Matt Harrison takes the ball for the 22nd time this season this afternoon. In his previous 21 starts, Harrison is 13-6 with a 3.17 ERA. He has not faced the Red Sox in 2012 and was 2-1 with a 4.74 ERA in three starts in 2011. Harrison has made seven appearances (five starts) against the local nine in his career and is 3-1 with a 6.10 ERA.  Three of those appearances (two starts) have come at the Fens where he is 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA (9 ER/12 IP).

In The Red Zone: New Orleans Saints at New England Patriots Preview Preseason Week 1

In The Red Zone

This Week

New Orleans Saints @ New England Patriots

The New England Patriots host the New Orleans Saints at Gillette Stadium on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

The Saints (2011)                    The Patriots (2011)

Overall          13-3                      Overall          13-3

Road record   5-3                       Home record  7-1

AFC East       0-0                        NFC South     0-0

AFC Conf      4-0                        NFC Conf       3-1

The Saints are 1-0 in the preseason having beat Arizona 17-10 on Sunday in the Hall of Fame Game.

The Line/Prediction

As of Tuesday the line on the game from Yahoo! Sports has the Patriots at MINUS 3.  The OVER/UNDER is 38.5.

My Prediction is Patriots 21, Saints, 17.  Give the points (Patriots) and take the under.

Tickets

The Patriots are reporting the game as a sell out. It is the 194th consecutive sell out dating back to the 1994 season opener.  The record includes preseason, regular season and playoff games.

Tickets to the game, if available, can be purchased through Ticketmaster.  You can check the availability here.

After market tickets are available through the Official Patriots Ticket Exchange where season ticket holders can sell their unused seats to fans on the season ticket waiting list.

Getting to the Game

If you’re lucky enough to be going to the game in Foxboro make sure you check out the links.

Here is the up to date weather forecast from the Weather Channel for Foxboro, MA.

Click for all the game day information including stadium directions, parking information and map and a Gillette Stadium seating chart.

Tailgating

Here’s a bunch of different tailgating recipes from Tailgating.com.  There’s something there for everyone and every type of meal or snack.  I’ve tried some of the recipes and they’re very good.

And with tailgating many people enjoy some adult beverages.  With that in mind check out Drink Nation for how to make all sorts of great drinks.  You can look things up by name, ingredient(s) or theme.

Whether it’s at the game, a bar or a friend’s house moderation is always the key to a great time.  Please don’t drink and drive and designate a sober driver.  Remember You Drink, You Drive, You Lose.

BROADCAST INFORMATION

Television

The Patriots Preseason Television Network is televising three of the Patriots four preseason games through out New England and Hawaii.

Longtime national play-by-play announcer Don Criqui and former NFL Pro Bowl offensive lineman Randy Cross will call the games.

History

  • The teams have met nine previous times in the preseason, the last time was in 2010.
  • New England leads the preseason series, 5-4.
  • The Patriots won that last preseason meeting at Gillette 27-24.
  • This is the fifth time the Patriots have opened their preseason against New Orleans.  The others being 1968, 1985, 1994 and 2010.
  • The 1994 meeting was Robert Kraft’s first game as owner of the Patriots and was the start of the consecutive sell out streak by the team.

Game Notes

While this is the Patriots first preseason game, it’s the second for the Saints who played in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton on Sunday night.  The HOF Game isn’t looked at as a preseason game by the NFL so those two teams end up with five preseason games, while everyone else has the standard four.

Saints QB Drew Brees signed the largest contract in NFL history in July when he got a five-year, $100 million deal with $60 million guaranteed and $40 million payable in the first year.

The two teams held joint practices on Tuesday and Wednesday.  It’s the second time in three years the teams have done this.

This is the fourth consecutive time these teams have had a preseason game in Foxboro.

The Patriots are 97-125-1 all-time in the preseason, 41-33 since Kraft bought the team.

Bill Belichick is 27-22 as the Patriots head coach in the preseason.

Both teams finished 13-3 and won their divisions in 2011.

They were the #2 (Saints) and #3 (Patriots) scoring offenses in 2011.

They were the #1 (Saints) and #2 (Patriots) offenses in total yardage and passing yard per game in 2011.

Saints TE David Thomas is a former Patriot, drafted in the 3rd round of the 2006 NFL Draft.

Patriots LB Rob Ninkovich was originally drafted by the Saints in the 5th round of the 2006 NFL Draft.

Patriots WR Donte Stallworth was a 1st round draft pick in 2002 by the Saints.  The 13th overall selection played with New Orleans from 2002-05 before being traded to Philadelphia in 2006.

Members of both staffs attended the funeral of Garret Reid, son of Eagles coach Andy Reid, on Tuesday.

Next Game

The Patriots host the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday August 20th at Gillette Stadium.  Kick off is at 8 p.m. on ESPN.

Afternoon Red Sox Mediocrity – 8/7

Ryan Dempster (L), Jon Lester (R)

After taking the first game 9-2 last night, the Boston Red Sox look to take the series tonight in the second game of a three-game set with the Texas Rangers at historic Fenway Park.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Rangers television market, you can catch the game on FOX Sports Southwest. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

He took the loss in his only start of 2012 against the Rangers after allowing seven runs in two innings of work back on April 17th. Lester has made nine career starts against the Rangers and is 3-2 with a 4.47 ERA. Six of those starts have come at the Fens where he is 2-2 with a 4.86 ERA.

Ryan Dempster makes his second start for the Rangers since coming over from the Chicago Cubs and his 17th overall. In his previous 16 starts, Dempster is 5-5 with a 2.82 ERA. He faced the Red Sox earlier this year as a member of the Cubs and earned the win after throwing seven shutout innings back on June 15th. Dempster has made five career appearances (four starts) against the local nine and is 2-1 with a 5.11 ERA. Two of those starts have come at the Fens where he is 0-1 with a 10.24 ERA (11 ER/9.2 IP).

Red Sox News & Notes – 8/7

Boston Red Sox's Carl Crawford is welcomed to the dugout after scoring on a double hit by Adrian Gonzalez in the third inning of a baseball game at Fenway Park in Boston, Monday, Aug. 6, 2012.

Is this the Boston Red Sox team we all expected this season? Or is this the Red Sox team that will get our hopes up only to dash them like teams of the past?

And while we’re at it, is this the Carl Crawford that the Red Sox expected to get when they signed him to a seven-year, $142 million deal? Crawford went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to help the Red Sox to a 9-2 win over the Texas Rangers.

Crawford was only part of the reason why the Red Sox won big though last night. Aaron Cook played a big part shutting down the powerful offense of the Rangers. Plus the top four of the order was 11-for-18 with eight RBIs. Eight of those hits were doubles.

The Red Sox offense was facing Japanese phenom Yu Darvish for the first time. While he didn’t exactly shut them down in the first two innings, he did keep them off the scoreboard. But once the Red Sox got a look at him one time through, they made their push in the 3rd inning.

Jacoby Ellsbury led off with a double and came into score on a Crawford double. After a Dustin Pedroia groundout, Adrian Gonzalez doubled in Crawford to give the Red Sox a 2-1 lead. In the 4th after a Ryan Kalish walk and Mike Aviles single, Ellsbury doubled in Kalish that was followed by a Crawford sac fly. Pedroia brought in Ellsbury with a double of his own to make it 5-1 Red Sox.

The doubles onslaught continued in the 7th when Pedroia led off the inning with one and then came in to score on a Gonzo single. The offense would add three more runs off of Michael Kirkman in the 8th to make the lead insurmountable.

While Cook wasn’t perfect on the night, he was more effective than he had been in his past few starts. He was able to scatter six hits over seven innings while walking three and picking up two rare strikeouts. Cook did it by mixing in all of his pitches. When hitters were thinking sinker, he was mixing in a slider and a curve.

For the Red Sox this outing was huge from Cook. Having been inconsistent his past few outings, it temporarily stabilized what the Red Sox get from the bottom of the rotation. But what needs to happen now is a few more of these from him.

When the top of the order hits like they did last night, the Red Sox are going to win some ballgames. Hopefully enough ballgames to get to them to the playoffs. Sure they’ll not going to hit like this the rest of the season and that’s when you hope the rest of the order gets going. But when all of them are going like this, you can only hope the pitching is good enough to get them the win.

That starts tonight with Jon Lester who we can only hope and pray that his cutter is effective and keeps the Rangers hitters at bay.

We’ll be back later with today’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. So for now, let’s take a look at the overnight links from the media.

Afternoon Red Sox Mediocrity – 8/6

Yu Darvish (L), Aaron Cook (R)

After losing three-of-four to the Minnesota Twins, the Boston Red Sox will close out their 10-game homestand starting tonight in the first game of a three-game with the Texas Rangers at historic Fenway Park.

Aaron Cook looks snap his four-start losing streak in his ninth start of 2012. In his previous eight starts, Cook is 2-5 with a 5.24 ERA. Tonight marks his first career start against the Rangers.

Yu Darvish makes his 21st start of 2012 for the Rangers tonight. In his previous 20 starts, Darvish is 11-7 with a 4.38 ERA. Tonight marks his first career start against the local nine and at Fenway Park.

2012 NFL Season Predictions

super bowl xlvii logo

With the 2012 NFL Season upon us I decided to take a look at the teams and make some pre-season predictions.  The records you see below were actually compiled by me going through the week-by-week schedule and issuing a team a win or a loss.

Then I assigned the playoff teams by seed, any tiebreakers were done using the NFL tiebreaker rules.  I then picked the winners for the Wild Card games, Division games, Conference Championship games and finally Super Bowl XLVII at the Superdome in New Orleans on Sunday February 3, 2013.

Before we get into the teams I have a few awards to predict.
