Saturday Red Sox Mediocrity – 8/18

Jon Lester (L), David Phelps (R)

After falling last night 6-4, the Boston Red Sox look to make a statement in the middle game of a three-game set with the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.

First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast to 72% of the country on FOX. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

Jon Lester will toe the rubber for the 25th time in 2012. In his previous 24 starts, Lester is 6-10 with a 5.20 ERA. He’s made two starts against the Skanks this season and is 0-1 with a 6.97 ERA (8 ER/10.1 IP). Overall in his career, Lester has made 19 starts against the Evil Empire and is 8-4 with 4.42 ERA. 11 of those starts have come in the Bronx where he is 6-2 with a 3.95 ERA.

David Phelps makes just his fifth start but 24th appearance of 2012 for the Empire. In his previous 23 appearances (four starts), Phelps is 3-3 with a 2.53 ERA. The rookie’s only two career appearances against the Red Sox have come this season where he has no record with a 4.50 ERA (3 ER/6 IP).

Red Sox News & Notes – 8/18

NY Post and NY Daily News Sports covers for Saturday, August 18, 2012

I may be in Charlotte, NC right now for my cousin’s wedding but I can honestly say that I’m surrounded by Boston Red Sox fans. So much so, that everyone was coming to me asking for updates on the game last night at the rehearsal dinner.  You see, the lovely young lady my cousin is marrying is from Massachusetts and so is her family.

Naturally everyone wasn’t too pleased when Franklin Morales forgot about Red Sox fans not digging the long ball against them and gave up three solo home runs in the first two innings of the game. They were very pleased to hear that the Red Sox had taken the lead when Dustin Pedroia hit a three-run blast in the 3rd to put the visiting nine out front.

Of course once again, I had to deliver some bad news when Derek Jeter hit a solo johnson to tie the game up in the 5th. And they were all none too pleased when the Yankees took the lead for good on a Jayson Nix bloop single. The last update they got from me wasn’t any better when I had to tell them that Nick Swisher had hit his second home run of the game.

Morales has done well for the Red Sox this season in ta starting role. But this is the second time the Yankees have light him up like the Rockefeller Christmas Tree in NYC. What that tells me is that Morales isn’t quite there yet. But he can get there, he’s got the stuff.

But for now, he’s just another average pitcher on a mediocre pitching staff.

Sure injuries have taken their toll on this team as a whole. But short of the turnaround by Clay Buchholz, it’s been the starting pitching that’s killed the Red Sox this season.

Too many times we’ve seen the Red Sox fall into a big early deficit and unable to fight back. We’ve seen the early leads for the opposing teams that the offense battles back from only to see the starter give it right back.

Because of this, the Red Sox haven’t been able to get on any type of roll. At the end of the July, the local nine closed out the month with four straight wins. The last time they had that many straight wins was when they won five in a row in the middle of June. During that stretch, it looked like they might be able turn things around.

Judging by the fact they are four-games under .500 in the middle of August, that hasn’t happened yet. And if I were a betting man, I’d say it probably won’t.

The Red Sox entered the final six games of this road trip with a chance to make a statement. Instead, they lost 2-of-3 in Baltimore and start out the Bronx portion of the trip. Couple that with losing three-of-four in Cleveland along with the mediocre starting pitching and there’s no chance the Red Sox make the playoffs this year.

That’s the only way the Red Sox have any chance of making it. The pitching needs to turn around and it needs to make that U-turn immediately. Last year I wrote the Red Sox were a virtual lock to make the playoffs holding a 9.5 game lead in early September. Obviously we all know how that turned out. That’s why I won’t say NEVER.

But it’s hard to stay positive about a team when the dirty laundry of this team is aired out in public on what seems to be a daily, if not weekly, occurrence. How can we expect them to stay positive when someone has a grudge with this team.

One thing to remember. Some of this guys are playing for their jobs. Not only for this year but for next year and beyond. And while some of them might not stay with the Red Sox, they aren’t going to give up.

But if things don’t turn around quickly, most of this fan base will have given up, if they haven’t already.

We’ll be back later with today’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. So for now, let’s take a look at the overnight links from the media.

Patriots Sign Olympian, Former Gator Jeff Demps

Florida running back Jeff Demps (28) tries to get away from Furman linebacker Matt Solomon (43) during the first half of an NCAA college football game in Gainesville, Fla. , on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011.

Jeff Demps wanted to represent his country in the 2012 London Olympics as a sprinter before pursuing his NFL career and he got to do that.  In doing so, the former University of Florida running back/kick returner went undrafted this past April but it didn’t mean he was unwanted,

At one time all 32 NFL teams made contact with Demps, 26 of them stayed in constant contact through out the Olympics and as many as 8 teams were still in on him today before he agreed to a 3 year contract with the New England Patriots.

The 5’7” native Floridian, who won a Bronze medal in the Olympics in the 4x100m relay, played his college ball at Florida under Urban Meyer where he was a National Championship winning team in 2009.  In his four-year college career, he gained 2470 yards on 367 carries and scored 23 touchdowns.

He is expected to give the Patriots some unbridled speed in the backfield and possibly be used to return kicks and/or punts and is seen as a poor man’s Percy Harvin in the return department.

Red Sox News & Notes – 8/17

I’m going to have to be brief this morning as I’m sitting in the terminal at Bradley International Airport.

As of late, whenever the Boston Red Sox have needed a big game from a starting pitcher, Clay Buchholz has stepped up and now looks like the true leader of the staff. Despite a rough start, he settled down and the offense picked him up in a 6-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles to salvage the finale of the three-game set.

Buchholz allowed two runs in the 1st and one in the 2nd inning. If not for a great throw from Cody Ross it might have been two runs. After that though, Buchholz settled into a groove. He also became the 43rd pitcher to throw nine pitches in an inning and striking out the side.

I do apologize that I can’t say more because I’ve got a lot to say. I guess it’ll have to wait until tomorrow.

We’ll be back later with today’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. So for now, let’s take at look at the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

In The Red Zone: Philadelphia Eagles at New England Patriots Preview Preseason Week 2

In the Red Zone

This Week

Philadelphia Eagles @ New England Patriots

The New England Patriots host the Philadelphia Eagles at Gillette Stadium on Monday at 8 p.m.

The Eagles (2011)                        The Patriots (2011)

Overall          8-8                        Overall          13-3

Road record   5-3                        Home record  7-1

AFC East       2-2                        NFC East       3-1

AFC Conf       2-2                        NFC Conf       3-1

The Eagles are 1-0 and the Patriots are 1-0 in the preseason.

The Line/Prediction

As of Thursday the line on the game from Yahoo Sports has the game as a PICK ‘EM.  The OVER/UNDER is 40.5.

My Prediction is Patriots 17, Eagles, 13.  Take the Patriots in the pick ‘em and take the under.

Tickets

The Patriots are reporting the game as a sell out. It is the 195th consecutive sell out dating back to the 1994 season opener.  The record includes preseason, regular season and playoff games.

Tickets to the game, if available, can be purchased through Ticketmaster.  You can check the availability here.

After market tickets are available through the Official Patriots Ticket Exchange where season ticket holders can sell their unused seats to fans on the season ticket waiting list.

Getting to the Game

If you’re lucky enough to be going to the game in Foxboro make sure you check out the links.

Here is the up to date weather forecast from the Weather Channel for Foxboro MA.

Tailgating

Here’s a bunch of different tailgating recipes from Tailgating.com.  There’s something there for everyone and every type of meal or snack.  I’ve tried some of the recipes and they’re very good.

And with tailgating many people enjoy some adult beverages.  With that in mind check out Drink Nation for how to make all sorts of great drinks.  You can look things up by name, ingredient(s) or theme.

Whether it’s at the game, a bar or a friend’s house moderation is always the key to a great time.  Please don’t drink and drive and designate a sober driver.  Remember You Drink, You Drive, You Lose.

BROADCAST INFORMATION

Television

ESPN is televising the game nationally and Mike Tirico will do play by play while Jon Gruden will provide the game analysis and Lisa Salters will cover the sidelines.

Here are all the rules on NFL TV broadcasts including explaining the blackout rules, flex scheduling and commercial breaks.

Radio

The Patriots Radio Network broadcasts the game from flagship station WBZ-FM, 98.5 the Sports Hub in Boston. Gil Santos handles the play-by-play, former Patriot Scott Zolak does the color. It all starts with Gary Tanguay and Andy Gresh with the pregame show at 5 p.m. along the network. The post game starts after the final gun and continues for three hours along the network.

The Patriots radio network call is available on Sirius Channel 88 and XM Channel 88 and SiriusXM Internet Channel 818.

To continue reading the Philadelphia Eagles @ New England Patriots preseason week 2 preview, please click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Last Week

Both teams won tight games, the Eagles beat the Steelers, 24-23 while the Patriots defeated the Saints, 7-6.

History

  • This is the 20th preseason meeting between the teams but the first since 2009.
  • The Patriots won the last preseason meeting in Philadelphia, 27-25 in 2009.
  • Patriots lead the Preseason Series, 10-9.
  • The Eagles last played a preseason game at Gillette in 2008 and won 27-17.
  • New England has won 8 of the last 10 preseason meetings between the clubs.

Game Notes

The Eagles are playing their second game since the death of head coach Any Reid’s son, Garrett.

Philadelphia did not make the playoffs in 2011 despite finishing second in the NFC East.

The Eagles were 8th in points per game last season with 24.8 and the Patriots were 3rd with 32.1.
