Monday Red Sox Travesty – 9/17

Aaron Cook (L), Alex Cobb (R)

After taking two-of-three in Toronto over the weekend, the Boston Red Sox finish up their seven game road trip starting tonight. They’ll look to play spoilers in the first game of a four-game set with the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, FL.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Rays television market, you can catch the game on Sun Sports. If you don’t live in either market you are in luck as the MLB Network will have coverage of the game as well (outside of Red Sox and Rays television markets). If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

The mightily struggling Aaron Cook gets the ball tonight for the visiting nine for the 16th time in 2012. In his previous 15 starts, Cook is 3-10 with a 5.18 ERA. He has not faced the Rays as a member of the Red Sox and is 1-1 with a 6.63 ERA (14 ER/19 IP) in three career starts. His lone career start at the Trop came in 2004 as a member of the Colorado Rockies when he picked up a no decision after allowing five runs in six innings of work.

Alex Cobb makes his 21st start of 2012 for Joe Maddon’s Rays. In his previous 20 starts, Cobb is 9-8 with a 4.26 ERA. His lone career start against the Red Sox came earlier this season when he picked up the win after allowing two runs (one earned) in five innings of work back on May 25th at Fenway Park.

Red Sox News & Notes – 9/17

If there’s any doubt that Bobby Valentine won’t be back as skipper of the Boston Red Sox, look no further than the move he pulled in the 7th inning of yesterday’s 5-0 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.

Jon Lester was spinning a gem at that point but the offense wasn’t able to do anything with Jays starter Brandon Morrow either. The Jays started the 7th with Brett Cecil on the mound who struck out Jarrod Saltalamacchia, surprise surprise. Brandon Lyon took over and got Ryan Lavarnway to fly out.

Manager Bobby Valentine of the Boston Red Sox chats with home plate umpire Brian Gorman during a timeout against the Toronto Blue Jays in a MLB game on September 16, 2012 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Canada.Pedro Ciriaco got on base with a single and stole second with Jose Iglesias at the plate. So with a 2-2 count on Iglesias and Ciriaco in scoring position, Valentine decided that it would be best to pinch-hit for Iglesias with Daniel Nava. The move failed though as Nava grounded back to Lyon to end the inning.

The Blue Jays would finally break through against Lester in the bottom half of the inning to the tune of three runs making the move by Valentine all the more curious.

Here’s my thoughts.

One, yes Iglesias has been struggling since he’s been called up. Part of that is the inconsistent playing time he’s received which means he’s not getting regular at-bats. Two, what if he did end up getting the big hit? His confidence would probably go through the roof.

The worst thing Valentine could do is what he did. Nothing like killing the confidence of a young player who is trying to find his way in the big leagues. I mean seriously. It’s not like this game meant anything.

The only thing the Red Sox are battling for is to stay out of the basement. They are back there by themselves by a game after the loss. Yes, I know they were trying to get the win for Lester but come on now, it was a stupid, stupid, stupid move.

In a season where we’ve seen some crazy things, this was probably the craziest one we’ve seen. And if it doesn’t get Valentine canned at some point soon, then that’d be the craziest thing we’ve seen.

Yes folks, the Red Sox are a mess right now. And until something’s done about it, this is how I expect things to be for the last 15 games of the season.

Wild Finish in Foxboro Doesn’t Go Patriots Way

New England Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski (3) lies on the field alongside Arizona Cardinals cornerback Justin Bethel (31) after missing a field goal at the end of the fourth quarter of an NFL football game on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, in Foxborough, Mass. Patriot's Zoltan Mesko (14), the holder on the play, reacts.

Well I do not know what is in the water in Glendale, AZ but the someone better test it because for the second week in a row the Arizona Cardinals pulled out a win from the jaws of defeat.

This Sunday after giving the New England Patriots nearly every opportunity to win this game in the end it was Arizona that came out on top 20-18 Sunday afternoon in Foxboro, MA.

I’m really befuddled because the uniforms were the Patriots uniforms that looked like Tom Brady, Wes Welker, Rob Gronkowski, Jerod Mayo and a slew of others. But who ever these guys really were on Sunday they were not the New England Patriots.

That was a pretty poor display from the get go when Brady threw a pick on the teams first possession of the game and it ended when Stephen Gostkowski pulled a field goal wide left.  On Troy Brown Day at Gillette what this team really needed was Carlton Fisk and some of his body language.

I watched a team today that appeared uninspired.  There was no fire, no urgency they just looked flat from that first batted ball.  Actually they looked flat to start on defense allowing the Cardinals to get on the board first with a Jay Feely 38-yard field goal capping a 13 play, 60-yard drive to start the game.

But unlike Week 1 in Tennessee there was no response.

Through the entire game I saw an offense that sputtered badly.  Passes over thrown or dropped.  Missed blocks, bad blocks, bad penalties it just wasn’t very good.

Like most of you I waited for them to awaken in the second half.  Surely Bill Belichick and the staff kicked some ass at halftime and made some adjustments and they would come out and … THUD.

Let’s face it this team didn’t even run the two minute drive correctly giving back the game winning touchdown on a holding penalty after the defense put them in position to win.

As John Szim on my Twitter timeline wrote “watching the Red Sox all year desensitizes you to losing games I guess.”

At least it’s only one loss and hopefully the bad stuff is out of their system and they can move on get ready for the Baltimore Ravens next Sunday night.

The spread (Patriots minus 14) WAS NOT covered.  The over/under (48) WAS NOT covered.  I GAVE the points and took the UNDER.  I am now 1-1 vs. the spread and 1 for 2 calling the under/over.

New England is 23-10 in September since 2002.

Since 1999 the Patriots have the best record in the NFL at 148-62.

The Patriots are 67-14 at home in the regular season since Gillette Stadium opened in 2002.

Against the NFC the Patriots are 18-3 at home since 2002.

The Patriots have won 15 of their last 18 home openers.

New England is 10-1 in Gillette Stadium home openers.

Arizona leads the overall series between the teams 7-6.

The Patriots had won the last 5 meetings.  It was their longest current winning streak against any team before the loss.

Bill Belichick is 3-1 vs. the Cardinals in his career.  He is 2-1 against them as the head coach in New England.

Belichick’s 193 wins are good for a tie for 8th all-time with Chuck Knox, who coached the Rams, Bills and Seahawks.

Tom Brady is now 1-1 vs. Arizona.

Brady has 303 TD passes in his career he is now 5th all-time.  Hall of Famer Fran Tarkenton is 4th with 342.

Welker is now the team’s all-time leader in receptions with 562.

G Logan Mankins, TE Rob Gronkowski and Welker said it was a poor week of practice and it may have carried over to the game.

TE Aaron Hernandez suffered a high ankle sprain the x-rays were negative.  He left Gillette Stadium on crutches and in a walking boot.

The Patriots sacked Cardinals QB Kevin Kolb 1 time, while allowing Brady to be sacked 4 times.

New England’s turnover differential is PLUS 3. The defense has recovered 3 fumble and has 1 INT.  The offense has given away 0 fumbles and has 1 INT.

The Patriots were 1 for 3 in the red zone.  They had 1 TD and 1 FG and were held scoreless once when they missed a field goal.

New England was 5 for 15 (33.3%) on third down conversions and 0 for 0 on 4th down attempts.

New England’s much improved looking defense allowed only 245 total yards and 16 first downs (8 rushing, 7 passing and 1 on penalties).

This was Arizona’s second time playing at Gillette Stadium; their other Foxboro appearances were at Foxboro Stadium.

Arizona has won 9 of the last 11 games tied for the best mark in the NFL in that span with New England.

Before Sunday Arizona last beat New England on September 29 1991 at Arizona, 24-10.  They had not won a road game in the series since 1984.

Notes:

Stanford made the biggest jump in my poll and well deservedly so after their upset of the USC Trojans. The Trojans along with the Michigan State Spartans were the biggest drops in the poll.

Notre Dame’s win over the Spartans made them the second biggest jump in my ballot even I though dislike the Irish with all my heart.

Definitely been impressed with the Florida Gators play the last two weeks with two big second halfs to pull out wins.

If Louisiana-Monroe had beaten Auburn they would have been in my top 25 for sure. That being said, the bottom of the poll from 22-25 is a crap shoot.

Sunday Red Sox Travesty – 9/16

Jon Lester (L), Brandon Morrow (R)

After winning 3-2 yesterday to clinch their first series win since July 31st, the Boston Red Sox look for the sweep this afternoon of the Toronto Blue Jays in the finale of a three-game set for the Battle of the Basement at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

First pitch is scheduled for 1:07 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Yankees television market, you can catch the game on Rogers SportsNet and TVA Sports (French broadcast).
