Tuesday Red Sox Travesty – 10/2

Jon Lester (L), David Phelps (R)

After being spanked last night, the Boston Red Sox look to play spoiler tonight in the second game of a three-game set with the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Yankees television market, you can catch the game on YES. If you don’t live in either market you are in luck as well as the MLB Network will coverage of the game (outside of Red Sox and Yankees televison markets). If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

Jon Lester looks to do what Clay Buchholz couldn’t do last night and that’s finish strong in his 33rd and final start of 2012. In his previous 32 starts, Lester is 9-14 with a 4.94 ERA. He’s made four starts against the Yankees this year and is 1-1 with a 4.76 ERA. Lester has made 21 career starts against the Evil Empire and is 9-4 with a 4.27 ERA. 12 of those starts have come in the Bronx where he is 7-2 with a 3.70 ERA.

David Phelps takes the start for a struggling Ivan Nova as he looks to help the Yanks clinch the AL East tonight in his 11th start (33rd appearance). In his previous 32 appearances (10 starts), Phelps is 4-4 with a 3.34 ERA. His four career appearances (two starts) against the Red Sox have come this season in which he is 1-1 with a 3.44 ERA.

Red Sox News & Notes – 10/2

NY Post and NY Daily News sports covers for October 2, 2012

Apparently, the season is over for the Boston Red Sox. And with the way things have been going, it looks like it’s been over for a long while now.

They’ve had the perfect chance to play spoiler over the final three weeks of the season. But they haven’t done diddly squat in that department.

Using what amounts to a spring training lineup against one of the most powerful offenses in the league in the New York Yankees, the Red Sox were spanked 10-2. The Yankees win coupled with the Baltimore Orioles loss to the Tampa Bay Rays allowed the Yanks to pull ahead of the O’s by a game in the AL East race with two games to play.

Even with the win, the Rays were eliminated from the AL Wild Card race as the Oakland A’s won. And with that A’s all five teams in the AL Playoffs have been determined (Yankees, Orioles, Tigers, A’s, Rangers). But seeding is still left to be determined.

As I stated above, the Yanks lead the Orioles by one game with two to play. The same goes for the Texas Rangers who lead the A’s by a game with two to play in the AL West. The A’s do control their own destiny as they are playing the Rangers and two more wins gives the A’s the AL West crown. And to complicate matters more, the Orioles and A’s are tied atop the Wild Card standings for home field advantage in the one game playoff slated for Friday.

Clay Buchholz was hoping to finish off his 2012 season with a strong start. It was far from that. By the time all was said and done, Buchholz lasted just 1.2 innings, allowing eight runs on six hits and two walks. Three of the six hits allowed were home runs.

All of the runs allowed and charged to Buchholz came in the second inning when the Yankees sent 13 batters to the plate.

Robinson Cano started it off with a solo home run. Buchholz then struck out Mark Teixeira that was followed by a Nick Swisher single. Curtis Granderson made it 3-0 with a two-run homer and Russell Martin made it 4-0 as he went back-to-back with the Grandyman. Walks to Eric Chavez and Derek Jeter plus a single by Ichiro Suzuki loaded the sacks full Alex Rodriguez who made the second out of the inning with a sac fly.

Cano chased Buchholz from the game with a two-run double to make it 7-0. Then Teixeira greeted an Alfredo Aceves 87 MPH pitch by whacking it out of the park to make it 9-0.

And given the spring training lineup that Bobby Valentine put out there, this one was over. You can’t fault Valentine for the lineup though.

Dustin Pedroia likely broke his finger when he slid into second on Sunday and Jacoby Ellsbury has been bothered a by a lat strain the past few weeks. So right there, you’re taking out two of your better hitters and guys who can get on base.

Che-Husan Lin led the Sox with two hits. Daniel Nava‘s one hit was good for a solo home run. The other run for the visiting nine came on a Jarrod Saltalamacchia sac fly in the seventh.

Hopefully the Red Sox can put forth a little better effort tonight. It’d be nice to see them play spoiler.

And oh by the way, one more loss for the Red Sox clinches last place in the AL East.

We’ll be back later with today’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. So for now, let’s take a look at the overnight links from the media.

In The Red Zone – October 2

In The Red Zone

Youngsters Coming Up Big

The New England Patriots staff must be absolutely thrilled with the impact the young players are having just four games into the season.

Lets start on the offensive side of the ball.  In the last two offseasons the Patriots have picked up RB Stevan Ridley and RB Brandon Bolden and we’re not even factoring in the other RB Shane Vereen.

After a bit of a skittish rookie season where he had trouble holding onto the ball, Ridley is on the verge of potential stardom.  After 4 weeks the second year back out of LSU has carried the rock 74 times for 339 yards (4.6 ypc) and 3 TD’s.  He has also caught the ball 5 times for 51 yards.

Bolden, the undrafted rookie free agent out of Ole Miss, had his breakout game on Sunday when he ran for 137 yards and a TD on 16 carries.  For the season he has 23 carries for 152 yards and 2 TD’s.  He also has 1 catch for 11 yards.

Other young guys on the offense that have made contributions are the record setting tight end duo of Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, as well as T Nate Solder and G Marcus Cannon on the offensive line.  Solder as a starter and Cannon as a sub.

On the defensive side of the ball 3rd year player CB Devin McCourty, who is a two-time team captain, has come back to his rookie season form and has been playing some very tight coverage.  After a bit of a down year in 2011, McCourty has stepped up with 23 tackles (18 solo), 2 INT’s and 6 passes defensed.  He has had tremendous back-to-back games defensively even if his penalty cost the Patriots in Baltimore.

LB Brandon Spikes, who came in 2010, is now a starter and is second on the team in tackles with 25 (14 solo), 2 QB hits, 2 forced fumbles and 1 pass defensed and is now developing into the player they thought he’d be.

Take those two and add solid rookies DE Chandler Jones, LB Dont’a Hightower and S Tavon Wilson and the defense is turning the corner and growing each week.  This defense has the potential to be absolutely devastating over the next few seasons.

Jones has 18 tackles (8 solo), 2 sacks, 2 tackles for loss, 2 forced fumbles and 4 QB hits.  He is proving to be the pass rushing force off the edge that the team needed to help aid DE Rob Ninkovich.

Hightower, a member of Alabama’s National Championship team last season, is as solid as 2008 first rounder Jerod Mayo.  Hightower has 20 tackles (17 solo), 1 sack, 1 QB hit and 1 fumble recovery for a TD.  And you can see why Bill Belichick loves those SEC linebackers.

The most surprising to me of the rookies has been Wilson who has some really good ballhawking skills.  Everytime something is going on and a ball is in play Wilson seems to be in the area.  He has 9 tackles (7 solo), 2 INTs, 3 passes defensed, 1 fumble recovery and he has contributed on special teams as well with a pair of tackles.

The team needed to infuse some youth and in the last three seasons they have done just that and the youngsters are paying huge dividends.

Offensive Line Steps Up

With the absence of G Logan Mankins the offensive line, which has been a huge topic of discussion, needed to step up and protect QB Tom Brady.  And step up they did.  They only allowed Brady to be sacked once and hit 3 times on Sunday at the Ralph.  Compare this to the Week 3 game in Baltimore when he was sacked twice and hit 6 times and in Week 2 when he was sacked four times and hit 6 times by Arizona.

In addition to giving Brady time and keeping him upright the line was the key to the running game which gained 247 yards on the ground on 40 carries and had two 100 yard rushers for the first time since 1982.

It was good to see them come through when the team needed a huge effort from them.  The next two weeks should be challenges for them against two good defensive teams in Denver and Seattle.

CB Devin McCourty had 2 INTs against Buffalo they were his first two picks of the season. LB Jerod Mayo and rookie S Tavon Wilson also each had 1 INT.

Both teams each fumbles the ball three times and lost it twice.  It was the Patriots first two fumbles lost on the season.

The Patriots sacked Buffalo QB Ryan Fitzpatrick 3 times, while allowing Brady to be sacked once.

New England’s defense had four tackles for loss for 11 yards.

The Patriots offense churned out 33 first downs (19 rushing, 13 passing and 1 by penalty) while the defense allowed 19 first downs by the Bills (4 rushing and 15 passing).

New England’s turnover differential is PLUS 8. The defense has recovered 5 fumble and has 6 INT.  The offense has given away 2 fumbles and has 1 INT.

New England was 4 for 11 (36%) on third down conversions and 0 for 0 on 4th down attempts. The Bills were 8 for 15 (53%) on 3rd down conversions and 0 for 0 on 4th down attempts.

No Television For UConn-Temple Game on 10/13

Temple Owls @ UConn Huskies

The Big East Conference announced the game time and television assignment for the UConn Huskies home game against the Temple Owls on Saturday, October 13.

The kickoff at Rentschler Field will be at 1 p.m. and the game will be available only online at ESPN3.com. That’s right folks, if you want to watch the game you have to hope that your cable or internet provider is one of the ones that allows you access to ESPN3.

This marks the second game the Huskies have had to play on ESPN3. The first was the loss to Western Michigan.

I can tell you this much. If I don’t end up going to the game, I’ll be watching the game on my iPhone 4S WatchESPN App. The video online the last time was so choppy and laggy at times that I gave up and watched on my phone where I had no problems at all.

Of course, since there’s plenty of tickets available, you could also head to the game at the Rent.

Monday Red Sox Travesty – 10/1

Clay Buchholz (L), CC Sabathia (R)

After being swept in Baltimore, the Boston Red Sox head to the Big Apple for their final three games of their miserable 2012 season. Tonight, they’ll take on the New York Yankees in the first game of a three-game set at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.

Red Sox News & Notes – 10/1

Orioles Magic

Well depending on how you want to look at things, the Boston Red Sox did their job this weekend by laying down like a good little puppy and playing dead. By that I mean, the Baltimore Orioles swept them.

Despite a plane scare on their way to Tampa for a crucial matchup with the Rays, the Orioles are back in the playoffs for the first time since 1997 with the Angels losing. They are guaranteed at least one of the AL Wild Card spots.

And now they need the Red Sox to stop being that good little puppy and come back to life against the New York Yankees these next three games while taking care of their own business in Tampa.

Look, I never really wanted to root against the Red Sox this weekend but doesn’t our hatred of the Yankees winning the division overule that. I wanted the Red Sox players do good, I really did.

Now I want them to make a statement in the Bronx. Because seriously, how great would it be if the Red Sox can keep their most hated rivals from the winning division. That would just make this miserable season we’ve endured a 100 times better.

Zach Stewart had a chance on Sunday to redeem himself after his poor Red Sox debut when he gave up nine runs in three innings. He actually didn’t last as long as his first start as he went just 2.2 innings. And he only gave up five runs.

Remember folks, Stewart is the only player left we have from the Kevin Youkilis trade. I guess the good thing is Youk hasn’t exactly torn the cover off the ball with the White Sox. But unless Stewart figures things out in the offseason, this trade will be a bust for the Red Sox.

Yes the trade had to be done at the time. I get that. In hindsight, it’s possible they could have waited until the trade deadline.

But the past is the past. It’s time to move forward.

Let’s just hope the moving forward is helping the Orioles out over the next three games. I really want to see Yankees fans sweating it out in a one-game playoff on Friday.

We’ll be back later with today’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. So for now, let’s take at look at the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.
