SB Nation BlogPoll College Football Top 25 Rankings »

First things first.

As I did last year, I didn’t vote the USC Trojans into my poll because they were ineligible for postseason play. Despite the fact Ohio State is undefeated, I am following the same idea as I did last year.

I moved up Florida one place and dropped Notre Dame one spot because the Gators played and beat a top 10 team in South Carolina while the Irish struggled with BYU.

I also decided to not drop West Virginia from my top 25 but another loss drops them out. Especially another bad loss like the whopping they got from Kansas State. Texas A&M also didn’t drop that far because they lost to a top 10 team in LSU.

2012 NCAA Football Rankings – Week 9 (Oct. 21)

AP & USA Today Coaches Polls

The NCAA rankings are out for the week and after their blowout win last night, the Alabama Crimson Tide remain as the top team in the land. Unlike last week though, this time around it’s not unanimous as the Florida Gators picked up one first place vote in the AP Poll.

The Crimson Tide are followed by the Oregon Ducks, Gators, Kansas State Wildcats and Notre Dame Fighting Irish in both polls.

With the Cincinnati Bearcats being upset by Toledo on Saturday night, the Big East has just two teams in both polls. They are the Louisville Cardinals (16/14) and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (18/15).

The Bearcats are the only Big East team among the others receiving votes.

Report: Red Sox Hire John Farrell As New Manager

John Farrell

In a move reminiscent of Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney releasing his tax returns late on a Friday, the Boston Red Sox have decided to hire their new manager late on a Saturday night when most newspapers have gone to press.

According to Sean McAdam of CSN New England, the Red Sox have hired now former Toronto Blue Jays manager John Farrell as their new skipper. Farrell takes over for Bobby Valentine who was canned at the end of the 2012 season.

Farrell, who had one year left on his deal with the Jays, is reportedly receiving a four-year deal from the Red Sox. He was the pitching coach for the local nine from 2007-2010 under former manager Terry Francona who is now the manager of the Cleveland Indians.

There is no word yet on any compensation going to the Blue Jays. An official announcement is expected late Saturday night, early Sunday morning on the hiring of Farrell with the compensation announcement coming in the following days.

The Red Sox had interviewed Tim Wallach, Brad Ausmus, DeMarlo Hale and Tony Pena over the past few weeks. But it was apparent throughout the process that Farrell was the man they wanted.

And now that they’ve got their man who can hopefully turn this team around.

UPDATE: According to Rob Bradford of WEEI.com, the Red Sox are sending Mike Aviles to the Blue Jays as compensation for Farrell.

10/21 UPDATE: According to Alex Speier of WEEI.com, the Red Sox will also receive David Carpenter from the Jays.

Norfolk Admirals 6, Connecticut Whale 3

Norfolk, VA, October 20, 2012 – Special teams doomed the Connecticut Whale Saturday night at Scope Arena, in a 6-3 loss to the Norfolk Admirals, as Norfolk went 3/8 on the power-play and scored two shorthanded goals.

CT WhaleThe defeat dropped the Whale to 0-3-1-0 on the year and gave the Admirals, who are 4-0-0-0, a sweep of a two-game series between the two clubs.  Norfolk knocked off Connecticut 5-4 in overtime on Friday night.

Kyle Palmieri had a goal and two assists for the Admirals, and Sami Vatanen, Chris Wagner and Troy Bodie had a goal and an assist each.  Kyle Jean, Christian Thomas and Chad Kolarik scored for the Whale, and Kris Newbury had two assists.

The Whale got two early power plays in the first period, but not only could they not convert, they gave up a shorthanded goal to Bodie on the second one.  With a penalty coming against Connecticut’s Blake Parlett, who impeded Bodie coming out of his own zone, Bodie continued down left wing into the Whale end, fought off Whale defenseman Mike Vernace and put a shot past Connecticut goaltender Scott Stajcer’s glove and into the top corner.

Norfolk made it a 2-0 lead at 8:03 on a five-on-three man advantage.  Vatanen, a defenseman who had three assists in the Admirals’ win Friday, scored his first North American pro goal on a one-timer from the right circle, off of a pass from Peter Holland.

The Whale got on the scoreboard at the 16:00 mark, as Jean continued his strong early-season production.  Brandon Segal worked the puck back to Sean Collins at the middle of the blue line, and Collins’ shot hit Jean in the slot and found its way past Norfolk goaltender Frederik Andersen (32 saves).  The goal was Jean’s third, and his sixth point, in four games in his rookie season.

The Whale started slowly again in the second frame, giving up a power-play goal to Ryan Lasch only 29 seconds in.  Corey Elkins, who completed a hat trick with the overtime game-winner Friday night, circled the Whale net before passing into the slot Lasch, whose goal was his first in the North American pro ranks.

Thomas got that goal back for the Whale at 5:31 with his first of the year.  Newbury picked off a pass from Gabe Guentzel in the neutral zone and broke two-on-one with Thomas.  Newbury drew the defender to him and found a wide-open Thomas to Andersen’s right.

Special teams victimized the Whale again, though, at 18:08, with another Admiral, Wagner, notching his first pro goal, and Norfolk’s second shorthander of the game.  Bodie broke up a Whale pass just inside his own zone and made his way down the right-wing boards in the Whale end, before passing into the middle to Wagner, who just beat Connecticut’s Chris Kreider up the slot.  Wagner was able to get a backhander into the top corner over Stajcer’s catching glove.

The Whale power play’s lone bright spot came 35 seconds into the third period, when Kolarik cut Norfolk’s lead back to one with his first goal of the season.  Logan Pyett set Kolarik up below the left-wing faceoff dot, and Kolarik, who missed all last season due to a knee injury, powered a shot over Andersen on the short side.

Connecticut was never able to get the equalizer, though, and the Admirals would tack on two more later in the third.

With another Norfolk five-on-three expiring, Patrick Maroon jammed the rebound of a Vatanen shot past Stajcer (25 saves) at 13:42.  Palmieri then completed the scoring with 45 seconds left, when the puck caromed to him from behind the net and he pushed it through the pads of a surprised Stajcer.

The Whale’s next action is on home ice at the XL Center this Friday, October 26 against the Hershey Bears.  Faceoff is 7:00 PM, and, as at all Friday home games this season, fans can enjoy $1 hot dogs and $2 beers until 8:00.  Tickets for that game, and all Whale regular season home games at the XL Center, are on sale now at the Public Power Ticket Office at the XL Center, through TicketMaster Charge-by-Phone at 1-800-745-3000 and on-line at www.ticketmaster.com.

Syracuse Spanks UConn In Pasqualoni’s Return To Carrier Dome

Chandler Whitmer is sacked by Syracuse defensive end Markus Pierce-Brewster in the second quarter.

The last time Paul Pasqualoni coached a game at the Carrier Dome, it was 2004 and his Syracuse Orange team walked off the field with a 38-31 double overtime win over the Pittsburgh Panthers. His return in 2012 as head coach of the UConn Huskies did not go as well as he had hoped.

A dominant Syracuse defense as well a quick tempo offense shredded apart the Huskies on both sides of the ball as they went on to a 40-10 win in front of 36,715 and nationally televised audience at the Carrier Dome on Friday night.

The Huskies fall to 3-5 (0-3 Big East) while the Orange improve to 3-4 (2-1).

This was the worst performance we’ve seen by a UConn team in Pasqualoni’s 1½ years at the helm. Yes this was even worse than last year with Johnny McEntee at quarterback.

The offensive line was pitiful, horrible, terrible and any other adjective that goes with those three. They are lucky that Chandler Whitmer is still in one piece after the pounding he took.

Last year, Syracuse was decimated by UConn’s wildcat and running offense. There was none of that on Friday night.

They held the Huskies to -6 rushing yards. They couldn’t get anything going as Syracuse had great run blitzes set up. It also seemed that they blitzed on every down whether the Huskies were running or passing. Despite probably being black and blue after all the hits he absorbed, Whitmer did throw for 290 yards.

And the defense, despite UConn’s poor record, had been the rock of this team. I’ve been saying all along there was going to come a time when the defense would finally break.

That came on Friday night as they allowed 502 yards of total offense (251 yards running, 251 yards passing). They allowed their third straight 100 yard rusher. This time around it was Jerome Smith who galloped for 137 yards.

After the offense had made 13-10 in the 2nd quarter and it looked like UConn had a fighting chance in the game despite the beating the Syracuse defense was putting on Whitmer and the offense, the Huskies D allowed the Orange to go 77 yards down the field in seven plays to make it 20-10.

It was more of the same in the second half as the Orange got the ball to start the half and took it 75 yards in five plays to make it 27-10. UConn went 3-and-out on its next possession and the Orange got three more points to ensure the Huskies would be blown out.

I’m not even sure I can put any of the blame on the defense. The play calling, as it has been lately, was terrible.

The Wildcat hasn’t really worked all season long and with UConn in the red zone in the first quarter, they went to it and Scott McCummings was stuffed. It forced UConn into a third down which they didn’t convert and they had to settle for a field goal.

The biggest problem though on Friday night was the offensive line. It was like the Syracuse defense was going up against the blocking dummies because they were constantly getting by UConn’s line and either pounding Whitmer or stopping the rushing attack of Lyle McCombs who made his return to the lineup after missing last week’s game with a sore left hand.

If you had been planning before the season to see the Huskies play in a bowl game, I’d cancel those plans.

They need to win three of their final four games just to become bowl-eligible. And with two of those games coming against Louisville and Cincinnati, both nationally ranked teams, that’s just not happening folks.

To me, it’s time for a change at either head coach or offensive coordinator. Something needs to happen quickly.

After what we watched against the Orange, do you really want to go to Rentschler Field and watch them play?

I know I don’t.

Offensive Player of the Game:

Syracuse receiver Alec Lemon celebrates in the arms of Zack Chibane after scoring against Connecticut during the third quarter of an NCAA college football game in Syracuse, N.Y., Friday, Oct. 19, 2012.Syracuse WR Alec Lemon had eight catches for 166 yards and one touchdown. One of his catches that went for 68 yards also set up a Syracuse score.

Defensive Player of the Game:

Despite the fact, they allowed 296 passing yards, I’m giving this to the entire Syracuse defense who held UConn’s running attack to -6 yards and took them out of any semblance of offense.

Turning Point(s) of the Game:

After cutting Syracuse’s lead to 13-10, the Orange went down the field and scored to make it 20-10. They would end up scoring 27 unanswered points to end the game.

Offensive Notes:

Chandler Whitmer was 23-of-41 for 296 yards and one touchdown. He did throw one interception and also fumbled once when he was leveled by a Syracuse blitz. Lyle McCombs had 12 rushes for 16 yards. Scott McCummings had one rush for -4 yards. Ryan Griffin caught six balls for 72 yards and a touchdown. Geremy Davis had four catches for 79 yards while Michael Smith had four catches for 61 yards.

Defensive Notes:

Yawin Smallwood and Ty-Meer Brown led all tacklers in the game with 10 tackles each. Two of Smallwood’s tackles went for total loss of six yards. Byron Jones had seven tackles while Sio Moore had five tackles and a pass breakup. Jory Johnson also had five tackles and one QB hit. The Huskies didn’t record a sack.

Special Teams Notes:

After missing four field goals last week, Chad Christen made his only attempt from 23 yards. He was also good on his only extra point attempt. Two of his three kickoffs went for touchbacks. Cole Wagner averaged 40.9 yards on eight punts with a long of 53 yards. Two of his punts were downed inside the 20. Nick Williams had two kickoff returns for 33 yards with a long of 21.

Injuries:

Adam Masters suffered an undisclosed injury and I’m not sure if he returned to the game. Yawin Smallwood suffered an undisclosed injury but returned to the game.  Michael Smith had the wind knocked out of him late in the 4th quarter.

Officials:

Referee: Dennis Hennigan •  Umpire: Michael Delaney •  Linesman: Steve Matarante •  Line judge: Kevin Cooley  •  Back judge: Gary Dancewicz  •  Field judge: Ben Vasconcells •  Side judge: Justin Jordan

The replay booth made the right call when they initially ruled that Chandler Whitmer had fumbled in the 2nd quarter. After watching the replay, they ruled that his arm was indeed going forward. Of course there was no need for replay on the next play when the same thing happened.

  • The loss drops the Huskies record to 6-3 all-time against Syracuse, after having won the past five meetings
  • Redshirt sophomore running back Lyle McCombs made his first start in three games at tailback. He was the third different Husky to start at tailback in those three games (redshirt junior Martin Hyppolite and redshirt freshman Max DeLorenzo had the other starts)
  • Redshirt sophomore quarterback Chandler Whitmer had his second straight solid first quarter throwing the ball. He was eight-for-12 for 69 yards after throwing for 158 yards in the initial 15 minutes last week against Temple. He finished the first half 14-for-23 passing for 193 yards and a touchdown and finished the game with 23 completions in 41 attempts with one interception and one touchdown for 296 yards.
  • Whitmer connected with redshirt senior tight end Ryan Griffin for a 32-yard touchdown pass late in the second quarter. Griffin now has 105 catches at Connecticut; second-most all-time for a tight end (Brian Kozlowski has the record with 159). It was his fourth touchdown reception of the season and the eighth of his career. He tied his career-high with six receptions
  • Whitmer completed passes to eight different receivers in the contest
  • Redshirt junior placekicker Chad Christen made a 23-yard field goal late in the first quarter, after missing all four attempts last week against Temple
  • Senior wide receiver Michael Smith had four catches for 61 yards after snagging a season-high five passes last week for 54 yards
  • The 20 points scored by Syracuse in each half were the most given up by Connecticut in a half this season
  • The 68-yard pass reception by Syracuse’s Alec Lemon in the third quarter was the longest play from scrimmage against the Huskies this season
  • With Jerome Smith’s 133 yards, he became the third consecutive Connecticut opponent to top the 100-yard mark rushing. The Huskies did not allow a 100-yard rusher all last season.
  • The Huskies only managed minus-six yards rushing in the contest. That was the lowest for the Huskies since Connecticut moved up to the FBS level in 2002. The previous low was 12 yards against West Virginia in 2005. It was the third lowest rushing total by a FBS team this season
  • The Huskies were led on the defensive side of the ball by redshirt sophomore safety Ty-Meer Brown and redshirt sophomore linebacker Yawin Smallwood, who each recorded 10 tackles
  • Syracuse’s 251 rushing yards represented a season-high by a Connecticut opponent

Norfolk Admirals 5, Connecticut Whale 4 (OT)

Norfolk, VA, October 19, 2012 – The Connecticut Whale got its first point of the young season, courtesy of a third-period comeback, but remained winless on the season Friday, as Corey Elkins’ third goal of the game with 29.2 seconds remaining in overtime gave the Norfolk Admirals a 5-4 win at Scope Arena.

CT WhaleBrandon Segal, who won a Calder Cup with the Admirals last season, scored his first two Whale goals in the third period to wipe out a 4-2 Whale deficit, and Matt Gilroy also had his first two AHL goals for Connecticut.  Jay Rosehill and Peter Holland also scored for Norfolk, and defenseman Sami Vatanen had three assists.  Kris Newbury, Mike Vernace and Kyle Jean had two assists each for the Whale.

Friday’s game was the first of back-to-back meetings between the Whale and Admirals, who will face off again Saturday night at 7:15 PM (“The Rock” 106.9 WCCC-FM, www.wccc.com).

Elkins gave Norfolk the game’s first lead on the first shot of the night, only 1:02 in.  Elkins poked the puck away from Gilroy in the Whale zone and moved down the right-wing side before snapping a shot past the stick side of Connecticut goaltender Jason Missiaen (24 saves).

Gilroy got that goal back for the Whale on a power play only 1:53 later, Connecticut’s sixth power-play score in 14 opportunities on the year.  Chad Kolarik worked the puck back to Gilroy at the right point, and Gilroy’s slap shot went off of Norfolk netminder Igor Bobkov’s catching glove and into the net.

Elkins put the Admirals back in front in a four-on-four situation at 9:47, after Vatanen forechecked the puck away from the Whale’s Marek Hrivik.  Stationed at the top of the right circle, Vatanen sent a cross-slot feed to Elkins, who flipped a backhander just under the crossbar behind Missiaen.

Gilroy struck again, with another Whale power-play goal, to tie the game back up at 9:13 of the second.  Jean hit Gilroy with a pass at the top of the circles, and Gilroy’s hard snapshot beat Bobkov (26 saves) to the stick side.

Norfolk replied with a couple of quick goals shortly thereafter, though, starting at 12:02, when Rosehill scored his first of the year.  Linemate Chris Wagner corralled the puck behind the Whale net and found Rosehill between the hash marks with a pass, and Rosehill quickly put it past Missiaen for a 3-2 Admiral lead.

Holland then made it a two-goal advantage at 14:16, with a Norfolk power-play score.  With Micheal Haley off for kneeing, Vatanen made another good play to hold the puck in near the blue line, feeding to Kyle Palmieri, who found Holland for a forehand shot into the top shelf.

Segal then got an early one for the Whale in the third, cutting the lead to 4-3 at 4:03.  J.T. Miller had a try blocked, but the puck caromed to Segal at the right side of the slot, and he put a high shot past Bobkov.

The Whale remained down by one until the 18:24 mark, when Segal struck again.  Jean carried the puck into the Norfolk zone and dropped it to Segal along the left-wing boards.  Bobkov had traffic in front of him, and Segal’s sharp-angle shot got by the Norfolk goaltender for a tie score.

The Whale outshot the Admirals 4-2 in overtime, but had trouble breaking out of their own zone with time running down, and Ryan Lasch worked the puck to Vatanen on the left side.  Vatanen sent a perfect pass across the slot to a wide-open Elkins for the game-winning finish.

The Whale were returning Friday to the same rink where their playoff run ended last spring.  The eventual Calder Cup-champion Admirals ousted the Whale from the postseason with a 2-1 overtime win May 11, in Game Six of the teams’ Eastern Conference Semifinal series.

The Whale’s next home game is Friday, October 26 against the Hershey Bears.  Faceoff is 7:00 PM at the XL Center, and, as at all Friday home games this season, fans can enjoy $1 hot dogs and $2 beers until 8:00.  Tickets for that game, and all Whale regular season home games at the XL Center, are on sale now at the Public Power Ticket Office at the XL Center, through TicketMaster Charge-by-Phone at 1-800-745-3000 and on-line at www.ticketmaster.com.
