Patriots Celebrate Holiday as Jets Look Like Turkeys

New England Patriots' Julian Edelman (11) returns a fumble for a touchdown during the first half of an NFL football game against the New York Jets, Thursday, Nov. 22, 2012, in East Rutherford, N.J.

Generally when two division rivals hook up in a meaningful football game on National TV it’s usually a knock down, drag out affair.  Such was not the case in the Thanksgiving Night game between the New England Patriots and the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford NJ even though the first quarter was scoreless.

In the second quarter New England exploded for a franchise record 35-points (tie, Tennessee 2009) and 21 of the points came in a mind boggling 0:52 seconds on their way to a 49-19 rout.

After QB Tom Brady hit WR Wes Welker with the games first score to give New England a 7-0 lead New York coughed the ball up on the ensuing possession when RB Shonn Greene fumbled the ball on 4th down while trying to reach for the down marker.  The ball ended up being recovered by Patriots S Steve Gregory.  On the very first play Brady threw a pass down the left sideline to RB Shane Vereen who hit top gear and was gone 83-yards for a 14-0 lead.

After the Jets got the ball back Sanchez proceeded to fumble the ball when he ran into his G Brandon Moore who got pushed into him by Patriot DT Vince Wilfork.  The ball popped free, Gregory grabbed it on a bounce and raced 32-yards into the end zone for a 21-0 Patriots lead.

On the ensuing kickoff Jets RB/KR Joe McKnight got popped by Devin McCourty and the ball went straight up in the air into the arms of New England’s Julian Edelman who returned it 22-yards untouched into the end zone and it was 28-0.

The Patriots would tack on another 7 points when Brady hit Edelman on a 54-yard bomb and it was 35-0.

The Jets would get on the board with a Nick Folk field goal prior to the half but this game was for all essential purposes done.

After a stellar four down goaline stop inside the five-yard line New England got called for a safety on a chop block that gave the Jets two points.  The Jets would get a rushing TD from RB Bilal Powell in the 3rd quarter to cut the lead to 35-12.

The Patriots would add a pair of 4th quarter TD’s on a 1-yard QB sneak by Brady and RB Stevan Ridley would go into the end zone from 9-yards out untouched to make it 49-12.

Jets TE Dustin Keller would grab a meaningless TD pass from Sanchez late in the fourth to complete their scoring.

So one week after hanging 59-points on Indianapolis, the Patriots post 49-points on the Jets while only allowing 24-points and 19-points respectively.

It’s safe to say it’s the second half and yet another Bill Belichick team is hitting it’s stride and it’s down right scary if you’re a team left on their schedule.

UConn - Louisville stat comparison

Notes from this week's opponent Louisville:

Here is the Louisville roster and 2012 schedule.

Here is Louisville's depth chart.

Here are the quotes from Louisville head coach Charlie Strong's press conference.

Charlie Strong is in his third season as the head coach at Louisville. In 2010, he led Louisville to a 7-6 record and a victory over Southern Mississippi in the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl. In 2011, the Cardinals were 7-6 and 5-2 in the BIG EAST to tie for first place. Louisville lost to North Carolina State in the Belk Bowl.

Prior to taking over the Louisville position, he was an assistant coach at Florida from 2003-09. He served as the defensive coordinator for the Gators since 2003 and was the associate head coach since 2005. Strong was also an assistant coach on the Gator staff from 1988-89 and 1991-94.

Strong also had assistant coaching stints at South Carolina (1999-2002), Notre Dame (1995-98), Mississippi (1990) and Southern Illinois (1986-87). He is a 1983 graduate of Central Arkansas, where he was a three-time all-conference selection in football and two-time pick in track and field.

It is Senior Day for Louisville. 13 players (10 scholarship, 3 walk-ons) will be honored by Strong before the game.

Here is a list of the seniors who will be playing their last home game at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium. Mario Benavides, Daniel Brown, Adrian Bushell, Bo Eggers, Stephen Goodwin, Nick Heuser, Alex Kupper, Nate Nord, Scott Radcliff, Andrell Smith, Will Stein, DeMarcus Topp, Chris Zelli.

This will head coach Charlie Strong’s third Senior Day and the Cardinals are 0-2 so far in home finales.

Entering its 94th season of football, the University of Louisville now has four coaches who have started their coaching careers at Louisville with three straight winning seasons. Bobby Petrino (2003-06) and John L. Smith (1998-2002) were the last two head coaches to post three straight winning seasons in their first three years on the job until head coach Charlie Strong became the fourth with a win over USF.

Lee Corso (1969-72) was the other coach to post three consecutive winning seasons to start his career. Corso, Smith and and head coach Charlie Strong also won league titles during their first three seasons.

After taking over a program that went 15-21 in the three years prior to his arrival, head coach Charlie Strong is on pace to do something special in just his third year as head coach. With a win over Connecticut, Strong would be the third coach at Louisville to win 10 or more games. John L. Smith won 11 games in his fourth season and Bobby Petrino also tallied an 11-win season in just his second year on the sidelines.

With its 9-1 record, Louisville is within one win of reaching a double-digit win plateau for only the fourth time in school history. With a win over Connecticut on Saturday, the Cardinals would gather their 10th win of the season.

Louisville is 53-61-1 all-time against current members of the BIG EA ST. Louisville’s 22 victories over Cincinnati is the most vs. any BIG EAST opponent for the Cardinals.

Since joining the BIG EAST in 2005, the Cardinals are 18-9 in BIG EAST home games.

Since 1998, the Cardinals have won 74.7 percent of their home games, going 71-24 over that span.

With its first quarter touchdown against Syracuse, Louisville raised its current total of games in which it scored to 157. The 157 straight games mark the longest streak in program history. The last time the Cardinals were shut out came on Sept. 23, 2000.

In three years under head coach Charlie Strong, the Cardinals are 9-3 in games following a defeat.

At 9-1, Louisville is bowl eligible for the third consecutive season under head coach Charlie Strong.

Report: Red Sox Sign Jonny Gomes To Two-Year Deal

While Daniel Nava emerged last season in the outfield and with Ryan Kalish being injury prone, the Boston Red Sox have only have one outfielder who they view as an everyday outfielder. And that is Jacoby Ellsbury.

They do also have Ryan Sweeney but you have to wonder if he'll be offered a contract for next year. As for now, he's still on the 40-man roster.

Jonny Gomes #31 of the Oakland Athletics sits in the dugout before Game Four of the American League Division Series against the Detroit Tigers at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum on October 10, 2012 in Oakland, California. And like I said yesterday when the 40-man roster was released, if the Red Sox decided to sign someone, a move would have to be made. Now that appears to be the case.

According to multiple media reports, the Red Sox and Jonny Gomes have agreed to a two-year deal. According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, it's worth $10 million over the two seasons.

Gomes spent the 2011 season with the AL West champions, the Oakland A's. In 99 games, he hit .262 with 18 home runs, 47 RBIs and three stolen bases.

Over 10 MLB seasons with Tampa Bay, Cincinnati, Washington and Oakland, Gomes is hitting .244 with 136 home runs, 411 RBIs and 43 stolen bases.

It's expected that Gomes will play left field for the Red Sox. So as right of now, the Red Sox outfield will probably be Gomes in left, Ellsbury in center and Sweeney in right with Nava as the fourth outfielder.

There's still plenty of time in free agency for the Red Sox to sign another outfielder. And I don't think you can't rule out the Red Sox re-signing Cody Ross just because of the Gomes signing.

Only time will tell that though. And we'll just have to sit back and watch.

Butler, 26, split 2012 between Portland and Pawtucket, hitting .247 (79-for-320) with 19 doubles, two triples, nine home runs, 37 RBI, 37 runs and 40 walks in 95 games.  Between the two stops, he threw out 38 of 114 attempted base stealers (33.3%).  He played a career-high 22 games at the Triple-A level after a promotion on August 3, and also appeared in six postseason games for the PawSox, going 6-for-19 (.316) with a homer.  In 330 games over parts of four seasons in the Red Sox system, the right-handed batter has hit .259 (288-for-1,114) with 77 doubles, six triples, 29 home runs and 166 RBI.  He was named to minor league All-Star teams in 2010 (Single-A South Atlantic League) and 2011 (High-A Carolina League), his first two full professional campaigns after signing with Boston as a non-drafted free agent in July 2009.  Currently, Butler is playing for Toros del Este of the Dominican Winter League.

A native of Milton, MA, Hassan spent the 2012 season with Pawtucket and played in 94 games, appearing in left field, right field and at designated hitter.  He topped all PawSox with at least 125 plate appearances with a .377 on-base percentage and finished second on the team with 55 walks, the 12th-highest total in the International League.  Following the season, he was ranked by Baseball America as having the best strike-zone judgment in the circuit.  A right-handed batter, he hit at a .256 clip (80-for-312) with 13 doubles, seven home runs, 46 RBI and 39 runs this past season.  Selected by the Red Sox in the 20th round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft out of Duke, Hassan has hit at a .284 clip (351-for-1,236) with 83 doubles, six triples, 30 home runs, 177 RBI, 180 runs and 198 walks in 361 career minor league games in the Boston system.

2013 NCAA Women’s Basketball Rankings – Week 3 (Nov. 20)

AP & USA Today Coaches Polls

Nine out of ten times, when the No. 1 team loses, the No. 2 team usually advances to the top. That wasn't the case though with the NCAA women's basketball rankings that came out this week.

The Baylor Lady Bears, who were No. 1, were knocked off by the Stanford Cardinal. The UConn Huskies, who are No. 2, were thought to be the new No. 1 team.

Instead, the pollsters have decided that Stanford is the new No. 1 team. They are followed by UConn, Baylor, the Duke Blue Devils and Notre Dame Fighting Irish in both polls.

Joining UConn and Notre Dame from the Big East in the top 25 are the Louisville Cardinals (7/6) and St. John's Red Storm (18/16).

The Georgetown Hoyas, DePaul Blue Demons and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights represent the Big East among the others receiving votes in both polls. The Syracuse Orange are among the others receiving votes in the Coaches Poll.
