The famous line of the late North Carolina State Wolfpack basketball coach and one time UConn Huskies assistant coach Jim Valvano was "Don't Ever Give Up".
On Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden in the tournament named after him, both teams followed that mantra to a tee.
Unfortunately for UConn, they fell just a bit short as the Wolfpack hit their free throws down the stretch for a 69-65 win over the Huskies.
UConn falls to 6-2 on the season while NC State improves to 5-2.
Shabazz Napier had a great first half with 15 points but finished with 19 points. He also had two rebounds and two assists. Ryan Boatright had a nice night with 18 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Enosch Wolf also had a great game off the bench as he had 10 points and pulled down six boards.
C.J. Leslie, a one-time UConn recruit, and Lorenzo Brown both led the Wolfpack with 16 points and four assists. Leslie ended up with a double-double as he had 13 rebounds.
After going scoreless in the first half, Richard Howell ended up with a double-double of his own with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Scott Wood rounded out the Wolfpack in double digits with 13 points as well.
The Huskies dominated the early part of the first half getting out to as much as an 11 point lead. NC State did battle back though to take a one-point lead though at the break.
In the second half, it went back and forth before the Pack seized control late. And they did that with their bigs who basically took over and got State a hard fought victory.
We knew one of the problems this Huskies team would have is on the inside. They just don't have the depth or talent there. Wolf was a surprise on Tuesday night and he basically needs to play out of his gourd every time out. But if he can do that, UConn might have somewhat of a chance on the inside.
Either way, I am proud of the way the Huskies battled all game long. It is a by-product of their new head coach Kevin Ollie, who needs to be locked up long-term as soon as possible so the Huskies won't get hurt in recruiting. Especially when they need a big man who can come in and play right away.
Tyler Olander is basically useless right now and Phil Nolan isn't ready yet. So until then, we're going to continue to see UConn rely on their guards until the inside game improves.
UConn is back in action on Friday night when they'll host the Harvard Crimson at Gampel Pavilion on campus in Storrs, CT. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Next up on the list for the Boston Red Sox to sign is/was another catcher right fielder. And for him, they had to leave the mainland.
According to several media reports, the Red Sox and the "Flying Hawaiian" Shane Victorino have agreed to terms to a three-year deal. It's reportedly worth $38-39 million over three years.
And who needs reports when you have Twitter.
Victorino is expected to play right field for the Red Sox next season and provides insurance in center field should something happen to Jacoby Ellsbury like an injury or even a trade. He did have a down year between his time with the Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers.
In 154 games between the two teams, he hit .255 with 11 home runs, 55 RBIs and 39 stolen bases. He is a career .275 hitter with 90 home runs, 409 RBIs and 201 stolen bases.
Now it seems the Red Sox have their starting nine and the signing of Victorino likely means they will not be bringing back Cody Ross. I still expect the Red Sox to be active in free agency or even with a trade to get another starting pitcher.
And as free agency goes on, we can expect some of the signings the Red Sox make to provide depth and bench spots.

The NCAA women's basketball rankings are out for the week and the UConn Huskies remain No. 2.
The Stanford Cardinal are still the No. 1 team in the land. They are followed by UConn, Baylor Lady Bears, Duke Blue Devils and Notre Dame Fighting Irish in both polls.
Joining the Huskies and Fighting Irish in the top 25 of both polls are the Louisville Cardinals (8/8). The St. John's Red Storm are ranked No. 25 in the Coaches Poll but are among the others receiving votes in the AP Poll.
The DePaul Blue Demons and Syracuse Orange are among the others receiving votes in both polls. The Georgetown Hoyas and South Florida Bulls are among the others receiving votes in the Coaches Poll.

Stallworth Back
With Julian Edelman hurt, the New England Patriots are a little short at the wide receiver position. So they called on an old friend in Donte' Stallworth. He was cut by the team before the 2012 season started. Apparently they also considered Deion Branch but according to Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston, he's battling a hamstring injury.
Once Again Patriots Depth Helps Team Win
Year after year Patriots head coach Bill Belichick does a solid job in creating a very deep roster by using the cap to his advantage and by refusing to overpay for most of the players on the roster.
Players who come to Foxboro know they will not break the bank but they do know they’ll have a shot at a ring. Over the years it has brought in many veteran players who weren’t looking for big dollars but a chance at a championship. It has also given New England a talented roster that goes three and four deep at some spots.
This season is no different.
In the off season the Patriots brought in former Raiders defensive lineman Trevor Scott. Scott was at one time a solid performer for Oakland but never of the super star variety. In fact he probably could have gotten more money and more years in other places but the lure of the chance at a Super Bowl championship has brought him much like other veteran’s over the Belichick era.
On Sunday with rookie defensive end Chandler Jones out with an injury and his top backup Jermaine Cunningham suspended by the NFL for violating the drug policy the team turned to DE Brandon Deaderick and Scott.
Deaderick was solid with 3 tackles and a forced fumble but it was Scott who made the most noise. Scott added 3 tackles of his own, 2 sacks, a QB hit, a tackle for loss and a forced fumble in his first extended action of the year.
It really makes you wonder why other teams can’t do this. Face it the NFL is a copycat league and Belichick has been doing it 13 years now in Foxboro and has built quite the track record but for some reason other clubs fail to manage the cap the way New England does.
Belichick’s vision and his financial philosophy work, all you need to do is look at the trophy case and the stat sheets. It’s better for us as fans and the Patriots as a team that other teams have failed to mimic it and guys like Trevor Scott are hanging around waiting to play when you need them.

With the win at Miami the Patriots clinched their 12th consecutive winning season and their 10th AFC East Championship since 2000 and 4th in a row.
This is the franchise’s 15th AFC East title breaking the tie for most division crowns with Miami.
The Dolphins lead the all-time series 50-44. This includes 3 meetings in the playoffs (1982, 1985, 1997) with the Patriots holding a 2-1 post season edge.
The Patriots all-time in Miami are 15-33.
Since 1999 the Patriots have the best record in the NFL at 156-64.
New England now has a 6-game winning streak after starting the season 3-3.
Since 2001 the Patriots are 71-16 in games played on Thanksgiving or later.
Since 2001 New England is 42-5 in December games.
New England is 58-15 vs. the AFC East since 2001 in the regular season.
The Patriots are now a combined 20-0 in the second half of the season since 2010. Their last loss in the second half was in 2009 in the season finale at Houston. Their next opponent is that very same Texans squad.
Belichick’s 201 wins are good for 7th all-time. He is tied with former Broncos, Giants and Falcons head coach Dan Reeves.
Bill Belichick coached teams are 16-11 vs. Miami. Belichick is 16-9 as Patriots head coach and he was 0-2 as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns.
Tom Brady is 15-6 vs. the Dolphins. Overall including playoffs he is 149-44.

There are going to be times this season when the UConn Huskies women's basketball team will be tested. Monday night was one of those nights.
Behind a stellar all-around effort from Kelly Faris, the No. 2 Huskies beat the No. 9 Maryland Terrapins 63-48 in front of 11,485 at the XL Center in Hartford, CT in the Women's Jimmy V Classic.
UConn improves to 7-0 on the season. Maryland falls to 4-2.
Faris may not have led the team in scoring on Monday night but she put up some outstanding numbers. She had eight points, seven rebounds, seven assists and eight steals. The assists and steals were a team-high.
Stefanie Dolson led UConn with 14 points and eight rebounds. Breanna Stewart added 13 points and six rebounds. Brianna Banks rounded out the Huskies in double figures with 11 points.
Tianna Hawkins led the Terrapins with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Chloe Pavlech added 10 points while Alicia DeVaughn had eight points and nine rebounds.
This was definitely not the prettiest of games. Neither team shot the ball all that well. I'm also guessing there'll be some players in the cold tub after the game icing down some bruises as it was a physical game as well.
But this is a game the Huskies needed to go through. With some tough tests coming up, games like these will help them towards their goal of an eighth NCAA Championship.
The UConn women are back in action on Thursday night when they host the No. 10 Penn State Nittany Lions at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, CT. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.

For those of you who follow college football, the biggest trophy of the 2012 season is the Heisman Trophy.
On Monday evening, the 2012 Heisman Trophy finalists were announced.
The three finalists in alphabetical order are:
• Kansas State QB Collin Klein
• Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel
• Notre Dame LB Manti Te'o
The announcement of the 78th Annual Heisman Memorial Trophy Award will be made on Saturday, December 8th, 2012 from the Best Buy Theater in Times Square and will be broadcast on ESPN.
Klein threw for 2,490 yards and 15 touchdowns with seven interceptions. He also ran for 890 yards with 27 touchdowns.
Manziel threw for 3,419 yards and 24 touchdowns with eight interceptions. He also ran for 1,181 yards and 19 touchdowns.
Te'o finished the season with 101 tackles, 1.5 sacks and seven interceptions.
