Saniya Chong Named American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week

Connecticut Huskies guard Saniya Chong (12) steals the ball during the first half against the University of Central Florida at the XL Center Wednesday night in Hartford.

DALLAS – Rookie guard Saniya Chong has been selected as the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday.  Chong earns the award for the first time this season.

Chong averaged 12.0 points and 7.0 rebounds in a 2-0 week for the Huskies, which included her second and third starts of the season.  The Ossining, N.Y. native also dished-out eight assists and turned the ball over only once in 65-minutes of action over two games.

Chong got the week started with a 17-point, 10-rebound effort in Wednesday's win over UCF.  Chong was 7-13 from the floor, dished-out three assists and the double-double was the first of her career.  She followed that up with seven points and five assists in the win at Houston on Saturday.

Chong is averaging 5.9 points per game and has dished-out 52 assists against only 19 turnovers in 27 games this season.

The Huskies return to action on Tuesday, February 25 when the team takes on SMU in Dallas.  Game time is set for 8 p.m. ET and the contest will be televised by SNY.

Video: UConn Men Go Cold In 64-55 Loss to SMU

SMU celebrates its win over UConn with coach Larry Brown.

In the inaugural season of the American Athletic Conference, there's a big disparity in the top five teams in men's basketball and bottom five teams.

The goal is not to play in the 4/5 game in the AAC Tournament in a few weeks. The reason being is that it'll be a tougher game than anyone else will face.

Right now the UConn Huskies, SMU Mustangs and the hometown Memphis Tigers are jockeying for that third position. UConn's already beaten Memphis twice this season.

And now, SMU has beaten UConn two times this season as they beat the Huskies 64-55 in front of a sold-out crowd at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, CT on Sunday afternoon.

UConn falls to 21-6 (9-5 American, 5th place) while Southern Methodist improves to 22-6 (11-4, 3rd place).

The Huskies were led by Shabazz Napier and Ryan Boatright who both had 15 points. They were a combined 8-of-28 from the floor (28.5%). In fact the UConn team as a whole shot 29.6% (16-of-54) in the game.

Niels Giffey finished with 11 points. Amida Brimah led UConn with eight rebounds but scored just one point.

Nic Moore and Nick Russell paced the Mustangs with 15 points a piece. Markus Kennedy added 13 points and seven rebounds while Sterling Brown pulled down a team-high eight rebounds to go along with six points.

Both teams started out the game a combined 0-for-7 before Kennedy put SMU ahead for good at 2-0. They would start the game out on a 7-0 run and never trailed in the game.

The Huskies would battle back and keep it close in the first half trailing by just two points at the half.

But it wouldn't take long for the Mustangs to seize control as they increased their lead to 10 points in the second half. And they were never really challenged by the cold-shooting Huskies.

An absolutely terrible offensive game for the Huskies who don't matchup well with SMU. The Mustangs are a little bigger and more physical and given UConn's reliance on its guard play, sometimes this things just don't work out.

You'd rather see UConn have a bad offensive game now than later down the road. So hopefully they got it out of their system and will play some inspired basketball in the final three games of the AAC regular season.

The Huskies are back in action on Wednesday night when they'll take on the South Florida Bulls at the Sun Dome in Tampa. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Wolf Pack Rally for 4-3 Win Over Falcons

Springfield, MA, February 22, 2014 – The Hartford Wolf Pack came back from a 3-1 deficit with three third-period goals Saturday night at the MassMutual Center, defeating the Springfield Falcons, 4-3.

Hartford Wolf PackAndrew Yogan scored the game-winner at 8:14 of the third period, and also added an assist, and T.J. Hensick also had a goal and an assist.  The Wolf Pack also got goals from Kyle Beach and Marek Hrivik, and David LeNeveu made 28 saves.  Ryan Craig, J.F. Jacques and Austin Madaisky scored for Springfield.

It was the Wolf Pack’s third consecutive win in the season series against the Falcons, after Hartford went 0-4-0-2 in the first six games between the two teams.

“We came back to the locker room and went back to our game plan,” Yogan said of the third-period comeback by the Wolf Pack, who had lost a 3-2 lead late in the third period of their 4-3 home defeat to Bridgeport the night before.  “We all talked about it, hard on the forecheck, and when we’re playing in the offensive zone and we’re protecting the puck and cycling, there’s not too many teams that can skate with us and handle our physical attributes, and we were able to capitalize on that.

“Whenever I can help out and contribute offensively, I’m going to do that, and I’m proud of the guys the way they responded in the third period.”

After a second period in which they were outshot 16-7, and trailing 3-1 going into the third, the Wolf Pack erupted for three scores in a span of only 2:57 in the third, starting with a goal by Hensick at the 5:17 mark.

Aaron Johnson headmanned the puck out of the Wolf Pack zone to Justin Vaive on right wing in center ice, and Vaive handed it off beautifully to Hensick.  Hensick got behind Andrew Joudrey, who was covering for the Springfield defense, and beat Falcon goaltender Mike McKenna (19 saves) on the glove side with a move to the backhand.

Just 2:26 later, at 7:43, Hrivik tied the game with his second goal in as many games, and his fourth in the last six games.  Hensick intercepted a Madaisky breakout pass on the right-wing boards and found Hrivik all alone in front, and Hrivik was able to make a move to the forehand and slip the puck past McKenna.

Then, only 31 seconds after that, at 8:14, Yogan scored what turned out to be the winner, after he jumped on a fumble by Joudrey.  Moving laterally at his own blue line, Joudrey coughed the puck up to Yogan, who burst down the left side and gunned a shot that McKenna got a piece of but could not stop.  The goal was Yogan’s fourth of the season, all of which have been game-winners.

The Wolf Pack controlled much of the play in the first period, and outshot the Falcons 8-6, but Springfield got the only goal.

Craig put the Falcons on top at 13:42, firing a high shot off of left wing past LeNeveu on the stick side, after Trent Vogelhuber worked the puck away from Shawn O’Donnell just outside the Wolf Pack blue line.

The Wolf Pack tied the game at 7:32 of the second period, taking advantage of Falcon goaltender Mike McKenna losing his stick.  Yogan worked the puck to Beach in the left-wing corner, and Beach got it past McKenna, as the Falcon netminder scrambled to try to recover the stick.

Springfield came back with a pair before the end of the period, though, the first on a power play at 11:49.  With Dylan McIlrath off for interference, Tim Erixon moved down the left-wing boards and fed a pass into the slot to Jacques, who ripped a shot past LeNeveu for a 2-1 Springfield lead.

Madaisky then made it 3-1 at 16:53, with an unassisted goal.  Madaisky prevented a Wolf Pack clearing attempt at the right point, and then unloaded a slap shot that deflected off the Pack’s Darroll Powe and past LeNeveu on the glove side.

The Wolf Pack’s next action is this Tuesday night, February 25, when they travel to the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine to take on the Portland Pirates.  Faceoff is 7:00 PM, and all of the action can be heard live on Fox Sports Radio 1410, and on-line at www.foxsportsradio1410.com and iHeartRadio.  Video streaming is available at www.ahllive.com.

The Wolf Pack’s next home game is Friday, February 28, a 7:00 PM contest against the Hershey Bears.  All Wolf Pack Friday-night home games feature $1 hot dogs and $2 beers through the start of the second period, presented by Marc’s Appliance Warehouse, located at 75 Prospect Ave., Hartford, CT.

Tickets for all Wolf Pack 2013-14 home games are on sale now at the Public Power Ticket Office at the XL Center, on-line at www.hartfordwolfpack.com and by phone at (877) 522-8499.  Wolf Pack tickets start as low as $12 for youth 12 years old or younger.  To speak with a representative about season or group tickets, call (855) 762-6451.

Video: UConn Women Roll Past Houston, 92-41

UConn guard Bria Hartley reacts after a play during the first half against the Houston Cougars at Hofheinz Pavilion.

It was the 1,000 game at UConn for UConn Huskies women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma. The same goes for his consigliere, Chris Dailey.

And while it was the 1,000 game under their leadership, it looked like the same things from many a games where UConn totally dominates their opponents.

UConn had three scorers in double figures as they went on to beat the Houston Cougars 92-41 in front of 1,569 at Hofheinz Pavilion in Houston, TX on Saturday.

The No. 1 Huskies improve to 28-0 (15-0 American) while the lowly Cougars fall to 5-22 (1-15).

UConn was led by its duo of seniors in Bria Hartley and Stefanie Dolson who both finished with 24 points. Dolson fell one rebound short of a double-double with a team-high nine.

Breanna Stewart rounded out the Huskies in double digits with 16 points and she pulled down seven boards. Saniya Chong and Stewart led UConn with five assists each.

Te'onna Campbell paced Houston with 15 points. Jesseika Parker was the only other member of the Cougars in double figures with 12 points. Yasmeen Thompson led the team with a game-high 10 rebounds while scoring just three points.

The Huskies jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead and Houston would do its best to keep the game relatively close. Unfortunately for them, UConn went on one of those killer runs of the 21-3 variety to seize control of the game.

Any remote chance of a Houston comeback was put to bed as the Huskies were lights out from the floor in the second half shooting 80% (20-25).

The UConn women are back in action on Tuesday night when they head over to Dallas, TX for a matchup with the SMU Mustangs. Tip is scheduled for 8 p.m.

Red Sox Make Chris Capuano Signing Official

Over the past few days, there's been rumors that the Boston Red Sox would sign LHP Chris Capuano to a one-year deal worth $2.25 million.

On Saturday, they made it official.

Here's the release:

Boston Red SoxThe Boston Red Sox today signed former All-Star left-handed pitcher Chris Capuano to a one-year contract through the 2014 season. To make room on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Ryan Dempster was placed on the restricted list. Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

Capuano, 35, a native of West Springfield, MA, is a nine-year major league veteran. In 2013, he went 4-7 with a 4.26 ERA (50 ER/105.2 IP) and 81 strikeouts over 24 outings for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He allowed one or no runs in nine of his 20 starts and closed out the season with a 3.14 ERA over his final 10 outings (8 starts) beginning on July 28. Over his two seasons in LA, he posted a 3.91 ERA while serving mostly as a starter.

In his big league career, Capuano is 73-83 with a 4.27 ERA (602 ER/1,267.2 IP), 1,050 strikeouts, and 392 walks in 238 games, including 209 starts. Selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the eighth round of the 1999 June Draft, he has played for the Diamondbacks (2003), Milwaukee Brewers (2004-07, 2010), New York Mets (2011), and Dodgers (2012-13). He missed time from 2008-09 recovering from Tommy John Surgery performed in April 2008.

He was named to the National League All-Star team in 2006, when he had a 4.03 ERA (99 ER/221.1 IP) and tied for the major league lead with 25 quality starts for the Brewers. That year, he struck out 174 batters and walked just 47 for his best single-season strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.7 SO/BB) and walk rate (1.9 BB/9.0 IP).

In his career, he has held left-handed batters to a .231 batting average, a .288 on-base percentage, and a .331 slugging percentage. His lifetime .619 opponent OPS against lefty hitters is eighth lowest among all pitchers since the start of 2003 (min. 1,000 batters faced). The left-hander ranks fourth among all big league pitchers since 2003 with 35 career pickoffs.

He made his postseason debut with one outing for the Dodgers in the 2013 National League Division Series in Game 3 against the Atlanta Braves and earned the win with 3.0 scoreless innings of relief.

Capuano attended Cathedral High School in Springfield, MA and went on to graduate from Duke University with a degree in economics in 2000.

Dempster, 36, announced earlier this week that he would not pitch in 2014. In his first season with Boston in 2013, he went 8-9 with a 4.57 ERA in 32 regular season games, including 29 starts. Last year, he topped Red Sox qualifiers and ranked ninth in the American League with an average of 8.2 strikeouts per nine innings (157 SO/171.1 IP).

In three postseason games during the Red Sox' run to the title, Dempster gave up one run over 3.0 innings. In his last outing, he pitched one inning, including a strikeout of Matt Adams for the final out in Boston's 8-1 win over the Cardinals in Game 1 of the World Series.

The 16-year major league veteran and two-time All-Star has a lifetime 132-133 record, 87 saves, 4.35 ERA, and 2,075 strikeouts in 2,387.0 innings over 579 appearances, including 351 starts. Selected by Florida in the third round of the 1995 June Draft, Dempster played for the Marlins (1998-2002), Reds (2002-03), Cubs (2004-12), Rangers (2012), and Red Sox (2013) in his big league career.

Sound Tigers Get Two Late Goals To Beat Wolf Pack, 4-3

Hartford, CT, February 21, 2014 – A pair of late third-period goals by Anders Lee gave the Bridgeport Sound Tigers a 4-3 victory over the Hartford Wolf Pack Friday night at the XL Center.

Hartford Wolf PackLee tied the game at three on a Bridgeport power play at 17:35 of the third period, after Marek Hrivik had given the Wolf Pack a 3-2 advantage with a man-advantage goal with 4:52 remaining.  Lee then struck again for the game-winner with 30.2 seconds on the clock.

Ryan Bourque and Justin Vaive also scored for the Wolf Pack, and Brett Gallant and Joel Broda had the other Bridgeport goals.

“We had opportunities to kill penalties, instead we got outworked and they stripped us from behind,” Wolf Pack coach Ken Gernander said.

With the score tied 2-2 and Bridgeport’s Joe Finley in the penalty box for boarding, Hrivik spun into the left-wing circle and fired a shot that hit Sound Tiger defenseman Scott Mayfield’s leg and deflected past Bridgeport netminder Anders Nilsson at 15:08 of the third.

Wolf Pack captain Aaron Johnson took an interference minor at 16:12, though, and Bridgeport capitalized for its second power-play goal of the game.  Ryan Strome fed a pass from along the goal line on the left-wing side to Lee at the left side of the slot, and Lee drilled a hard shot past Wolf Pack goaltender Dov Grumet-Morris (22 saves) at 17:35.

Then, with the game appearing headed for overtime, Lee took a pass from Mike Halmo, rushed down right wing and attempted to center the puck.  The Wolf Pack’s Dylan McIlrath blocked the pass, but the puck came back to Lee near the goal line, and he batted it off of Grumet-Morris’ left pad and into the net for the winner.

The Wolf Pack controlled most of the territorial play in the first period, outshooting Bridgeport 16-7, but the Sound Tigers led for most of the session, after Gallant scored his first goal in 38 games on the season at 3:12.

The Wolf Pack misfired on an attempted breakout on the left-wing side, and Bridgeport’s Chris Langkow fed the puck to Gallant, who was all alone in front of Grumet-Morris.  Gallant waited Grumet-Morris out, before putting a forehand shot into the net.

That lead lasted until there were only 2.3 seconds remaining in the period, when Bourque scored his 14th goal of the season and his fourth in the last four games.  Nilsson stopped an initial try by Bourque, but a Sound Tiger clearing try up the middle ended up right back on Bourque’s stick, and Bourque snapped it past Nilsson’s catching glove.

After that last-second goal in the first period, the Wolf Pack got the game’s next score with only 2:02 remaining in the second.  It was Vaive scoring his first goal in 14 games since joining the Wolf Pack, to give Hartford its first lead.  Kyle Beach worked the puck out of the left-wing corner to the opposite point to Bretton Stamler, whose shot went wide.  Vaive got his stick on the carom, though, to Nilsson’s left and knifed it into the net.

The Sound Tigers were able to tie the score at 6:22 of the third period on a power-play goal by Broda, playing his first game in a Bridgeport uniform after joining the Sound Tigers on Wednesday.  Strome passed across the slot from the left side to Broda, and he was able to send the puck between Grumet-Morris and the post to his left.

The Wolf Pack are right back in action Saturday night, traveling to Springfield to meet the Falcons for a 7:00 PM game.  All of the action of that battle can be heard live on Fox Sports Radio 1410, and on-line at www.foxsportsradio1410.com and iHeartRadio.  Video streaming is available at www.ahllive.com.
