Down on the Farm – 6/11

A while back I had started to write about the happenings of the Red Sox minor league system on a weekly basis. I kind of forgot about it as the time went by. But the draft got me thinking about this again. The minor league system should be written about an almost daily basis. After all the guys who play in the Red Sox system could be on the big stage in Boston one day.

Steinbrenner Death Watch For 6/11

nymedia611.gif

The Big Stein death watch may dying itself right now as the Yanks are showing signs of life. Big Stein is very pleased right now. 6 wins in a row, almost to .500 and actually within single digits of the Red Sox. So Big Stein is happy to report that he may not be dying after all. Not just yet. The only thing upsetting Big Stein today is how the Sopranos ended.

Red Sox News & Notes

Well what is their to say about the past road trip for the Red Sox. They didn’t play all that well as they went 3-4 on it. Dice-K went up against Randy Johnson yesterday and both pitchers were impressive, both tallying 9 strikeouts each. The Red Sox are off today as they get ready to host Colorado and San Francisco in the upcoming 6 game interleague homestand.

With that being said, let’s take a look at the headlines and stories making news in the Boston area and Phoenix newspapers.

Diamondbacks Avoid Sweep, Win 5-1

dicek.gifIn front of another packed house at Fenway Park Chase Field, Randy Johnson struck out 9 Red Sox batters in out-dueling his counterpart from Japan as the Diamondbacks were able to pull out a 5-1 victory. The win for the Diamondbacks helped them avoid being swept by the boys from Beantown.

It was a tough trip for the Sox as they went 3-4 on the 7 game trip, including losing 3 in a row to the A’s to start the trip.

The game was close (2-1) until the 8th inning when the normally dependable Red Sox bullpen imploded.

Brendan Donnelly gave up a single to Conor Jackson to lead off the inning. Terry Francona then made the call to the bullpen for Javier Lopez, who came into face a lefty, Stephen Drew. Drew drew a walk from Lopez and Francona once again made a visit to the mound. He decided to bring in Mike Timlin, who was activated from the DL on Saturday.

Timlin, in words that are safe to read, sucked. Carlos Quentin layed down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. Timlin decided to throw like a pansy and threw the ball over Kevin Youkilis’ head, allowing both Jackson and Drew to score, making it 4-1 D’backs. Quentin got all the way to third on the error by Timlin. Quentin would come around to score on a Chris Young single, providing the final margin of victory.

The game started out as a battle of the strikeouts. Through the first three innings, the Big Unit struck out 6 Red Sox batters while Dice-K struck out 3 D’backs.

The Sox finally got to Johnson for their only run in the 4th inning. Manny drew a lead off walk and came around to score on a Mike Lowell double. Johnson did strike out two more Sox batters bring his strikeout total to 8 in just 4 innings of work.

Arizona managed a run in their half of the 4th even though Dice-K struck out 3 batters in the inning. Orlando Hudson drew a lead-off walk and Chad Tracy, 3 strikeouts on the day, was retired via the strikeout. Before Jackson drew a walk, Hudson stole second base. Drew then hit a single, bringing in Hudson to tie the game at 1. Quentin then grounded a ball to Lowell at third base, which he booted for his 11th error of the season. Lowell’s error loaded up the bases for Chris Synder. Dice-K got out of further trouble by getting Synder and Johnson to strikeout.

In the 6th, the D’backs would score the eventual game winning run. Jackson led off the inning with a walk. After Drew flied out to Manny in left, Quentin smashed a double to deep center, scoring Jackson and giving the D’backs a 2-1 lead.

Dice-K pitched very well for the Sox and kept the Red Sox in the game. Unfortunately for him, his teammates only scraped together 4 hits off of Johnson and 6 total in the game.

Dice-K’s line: 6 innings, 4 hits, 2 runs, 4 walks and 9 strikeouts. Big Unit’s line: 6 innings, 4 hits, 1 run, 3 walks and 9 strikeouts.

I guess the biggest question is did the Red Sox make the right decision in letting J.C. Romero go when they activated Timlin? They could have sent down Lopez to see how Timlin would do. I was surprised to see Timlin in a close game but then again, I am not the manager.

The Sox are off on Monday and return home to host the Colorado Rockies for a 3 game set. Tim Wakefield takes the hill for the Sox as they look to reestablish their lead in the AL East. It is now down to 9.5 games, as the Yanks have won their last 6 ballgames.

Steve sent this in to me to add.

During today’s game WRKO’s Joe Castiglione said of Diamondbacks outfielder Eric Brynes is that “he plays the game like his hair is on fire”. I think the understated Glenn Geffner nodded in agreement.

Steinbrenner Death Watch For 6/10

nymedia610.gif

Big Stein was surprised to see more than one horse on the cover of the tabloids. He’s even surprised to hear why Paris held her pee for 3 days. He’s glad his investment of Roger Clemens paid off for one game and he’s happy his team has won 5 in a row.

Red Sox News & Notes

cora69.gifA decent outing by Julian Tavarez and a great performance by the Sox bullpen got the job done for the Red Sox on Saturday in Phoenix. Oh yeah, Jason Varitek’s bat helped out too. Dice-K takes the hill against the Big Unit as the Sox go for the sweep of the Diamondbacks. But before that, let’s take a look at what the headlines and stories from Boston area and Phoenix media.

Varitek Gets Sox Back In Game; Lowell’s Sac Fly Wins It

varitek.gifOn a night where Chase Field seemed more like Fenway Park, it was the bat of Jason Varitek and a strong performance by the Red Sox bullpen that did in the Diamondbacks, as the Sox won 4-3 in 10 innings.

Julian Tavarez pitched well for the Red Sox but it was 4 strong innings by the bullpen that allowed the Red Sox to battle back. Brendan Donnelly, Hideki “Darkman” Okajima and Jonathan Papelbon combined to give up 1 hit in the 4 innings they pitched. Darkman got the win and Papelbon got his 14th save in 15 tries.

Arizona got on the board first with a run in the second inning. Stephen Drew reached on an infield single and was then retired on a Carlos Quentin fielder’s choice. Miguel Montero lined a double off of Tavarez that drove in Quentin, giving the Diamondbacks a 1-0 lead. Tavarez then got his counterpart Micah Owings to ground out and he retired Eric Byrnes on a strikeout.

The Diamondbacks put up another 2 runs in the 4th inning when Drew took Tavarez deep. Mark Reynolds led off the inning with a double and he came around to score on the Drew 2 run blast. Friday night it was his brother, J.D., who did the damage and this game it was him. Tavarez then settled in and retired the next three batters.

The Sox finally got to Owings in the 6th inning. After Owings retired Big Papi and Kevin Youkilis, J.D. got on base with a single. Vartiek then took a Owings offering out of the ballpark, cutting the deficit to 3-2 Diamondbacks.

Vartiek drove in his third run of the game against former Sox closer Brandon Lyon. Youk drew a walk to lead off the inning and was retired on a J.D. fielder’s choice. Varitek crushed a Lyon offering to deep center for a double, driving in J.D. with the game-tying run. Lyon got out of the inning by striking out Cora and Hinske.

The Red Sox got the winning run off of Juan Cruz in the 10th inning. Big Papi led off with a walk and advanced 90 feet on a Youk single. J.D. lined a single to center loading up the bases for the hero of the game for the Sox, Varitek. Unfortunately, ‘Tek struck out. With two strikes on him, Mike Lowell, pinch-hitting for Darkman, drove a ball to right field that brought in Big Papi to give the Sox a 4-3 lead. The Diamondbacks appealed that Papi left early but TV replays clearly showed he didn’t. Cora had a chance to give the Sox some more insurance but he struck out to end the threat.

Jonathan Papelbon, pitching for the first time since Sunday, came in for the 10th. He struck out Byrnes and then hit Chris Young with a 2 strike fastball. Papelboner then blew a fastball by Orlando Hudson. Young hit an infield single to Lugo at short but Papelbon got Reynolds to line out to end the game.

The Sox now turn to Daisuke Matsuzaka on Sunday afternoon to hopefully put the finishing touches on a sweep in Arizona. He will be opposed by Randy Johnson.
