Sox Batter Devil Rays Bullpen, Win 7-1

The Red Sox didn’t really hit the cover off the ball tonight but they did get some timely hits as they got to the Devil Rays bullpen for five runs in a 7-1 win. It was Kevin Youkilis’ 3-run homer that did the damage as early on the Sox were shutdown by the D’Rays starter Jason Hammel. Manny Ramirez kept up his hot streak at the plate as he got two more hits.

Hammel kept the Red Sox at bay for the 1st and 2nd innings while Tim Wakefield set the Devil Rays down in the first after Akinori Iwamura led off with a double.

In the 2nd inning though, the D’Rays got to Wake for their only run of the night. After Wake got Delmon Young and Brendan Harris out, he gave up a single to Ty Wigginton. Wiggy moved over to second when Wake walked Johnny Gomes. Dioner Navarro brought in Wiggy with a single giving the D’Rays a 1 zip lead. Wake then issued a walk to Iwamura but got Carl Crawford to ground out to end the inning.

Hammel kept on cruising as he didn’t give up a hit until there was two outs in the 4th as Big Papi beat the shift for a single. Hammel got out of the inning as he got Manny to ground out to Wiggy at second.

Wakefield got Wiggy out leading off the 4th inning and then struck out Gomes looking on a nasty knuckleball. Navarro followed that with a single. The Sox got out of the inning when Iwamura’s single hit Navarro while he was running. Wakefield set down the Rays in order in the 5th inning.

Hammel cruised through the 5th inning as well but ran into some trouble in the 6th. Hammel got Doug Mirabelli to strikeout to start the inning but then issued a walk to Alex Cora. With Julio Lugo at the plate, Cora stole second base. Hammel then ended up walking Lugo and that was the end of his night. Joe Maddon went to his bullpen for Juan Salas and the move didn’t pay off as Youk pounded a 3-run homer giving the Sox a 3-1 lead. Salas rebounded to get Big Papi to strikeout but then allowed a double to Manny. Salas then had some control issues as he walked J.D. Drew and Mike Lowell to load up the bases for Coco. Maddon went to his bullpen again for Casey Fossum. Fossum came in and retired Coco as he lined out to Young in rightfield.

Wakefield had a pretty easy 6th inning as well. He only issued a 2-out walk to Wiggy but got out of the inning as Gomes grounded into a fielder’s choice. This was Wakefield’s last inning of work as his pitch count was at 101. Wakefield went 6 innings, allowing 6 hits, 1 run, 3 walks and he struck out 7.

The Red Sox got to D’Rays bullpen for some more insurance runs in the 8th inning. Fossum started out the inning by getting Youk to fly out. He then issued a free pass to Big Papi and then was taken out of the game as Maddon wanted a righty, Shawn Camp, to face Manny. Manny greeted Camp with a single to right with Big Papi moving over to third. Drew brought in Big Papi with a single to right for a 4-1 Sox lead. The single for Drew broke an o for 12 slide. Camp fought back as he got Lowell to pop out. Coco then hit a shot that Crawford almost caught on a diving catch but the ball popped out and Coco had a double and the Sox had two more runs. Mirabelli brought in Coco with a single to right making it 7-1 Red Sox. Camp finally got out of the inning as Cora popped out but the damage was done.

Manny Delcarmen, who had come in for Wake, worked a perfect 7th but was touched for a hit by B.J. Upton leading off the 8th. Delcarmen got Carlos Peña to hit into a fielder’s choice then finished off the inning by getting Young and Harris out.

Kyle Synder worked an uneventful 9th for the Sox holding the W for Wake. Wake now moves to 12-9 on the season. The Sox will hand the ball to Jon Lester tomorrow night, who will be making just his second start of the season since returning from cancer. He will be opposed by James Shields who has struggled as of late. Gametime is 7:1o PM at the Trop.

Phillies Respond Quickly To Utley Injury

The Philadelphia Phillies wasted no time trying to take care of their needs at second base after losing All-Star Chase Utley to a broken hand. They acquired Tadahito Iguchi from the Chicago White Sox for a low-A pitcher Michael Dubee.

Utley suffered the broken hand on Thursday and underwent surgey on Friday. He should be back in 4-6 weeks if it heals properly.

While Iguchi won’t replace Utley’s 82 RBIs, which puts him third in the NL behind teammate Ryan Howard and Carlos Lee, he should get on base a little more than the alternative, Abraham Nuñez. Iguchi was hitting .251 with 6 homers and 31 RBIs while stealing 8 bases. His OPS stands at .723 which is about 100 points higher than Nuñez.

Iguchi is set to be a free agent at the end of the season. He more than likely wouldn’t be signed by the Phillies but you never know.

This is a good deal for the Phillies considering they didn’t have to give up much at all. It also shows the Phillies fans that they aren’t giving up on the season with the loss of their All-Star second baseman.

I can’t wait to see Texy’s reaction to this one.

Indians Make First Move

The Cleveland Indians, fresh off losing 3 of 4 to the Boston Red Sox, have made the first major splash in the non-waiver trade market. They acquired the ageless veteran Kenny Lofton from the Texas Rangers for catcher Max Ramirez.

This is Lofton’s third stint with the Tribe. He had previously played for them during the 1992-1996 seasons and then again in 1998-2001. Ramirez had been acquired by the Indians from the Braves when they traded Bob Wickman.

I think this is a good move for the Indians. Trot Nixon has been in a slump for most of the season and with his known back issues, he could end up being a liability to the Indians. The Indians also have David Dellucci on the disabled list.

For an old man, Lofton has put up some good numbers. He was hitting .303 with 7 homer and 23 RBIs while stealing 21 bases. He will give the Tribe some much needed speed to go along with Grady Sizemore. Lofton will see time in right or left field for the most part and could spell Sizemore in center if needed.

Red Sox News & Notes – 7/27

After a combined 10 runs by the Indians and Red Sox in the first three games, the teams combined for 23 runs in last night’s Red Sox win in Cleveland. WMP showcased his batting power for a possible trade and Manny blasted two homeruns as well. Kason Gabbard had been cruising along until he lost focus and the Indians erupted on him. The Red Sox now head to Tampa for a three game set against the lowly Devil Rays. WMP & Manny Blast Sox To Win

If you tuned into tonight’s game to watch a pitcher’s duel for the third straight night, you caught quite the opposite. The Red Sox pounded out 17 hits and 14 runs as they beat the Indians 14-9. Wily Mo Peña led the way with 4 hits and 4 RBI, including a laser beam 3 run homer. Manny Ramirez chipped in with 3 hits, including 2 homers and 4 RBI as well while Mike Lowell added 3 hits and 2 RBI.

Both starting pitchers tonight, Kason Gabbard and Cliff Lee worked easy 1-2-3 first innings. But the Red Sox managed to get to Lee for a run in the 2nd inning. Manny got the boys from Beantown on the scoreboard with a tape measure homer to center. It was measured at 481 feet, which is the third longest in the history of the Jake. Jim Thome has the longest at 511 feet. Kevin Youkilis, the only Red Sox player without a hit on the night, grounded out for the first out of the inning. Lowell followed that with a single but Lee got out of the inning by retiring Jason Varitek and Coco Crisp.

The Sox added another run in the 3rd inning. WMP led off with a single and Julio Lugo followed with a single, extending his hitting streak to 15 games. Lee got Dustin Pedroia to ground into a double play but WMP scored to make it 2-0 Sox. Lee got out off the inning as Jesse Barfield made a nice diving catch of a Big Papi line drive in short right.

Gabby worked a perfect 2nd and had retired the first batter of the 3rd inning when Franklin Gutierrez took Gabbard out of the park cutting the lead to 2-1. Gabby finished off the inning by getting Barfield to pop out and Grady Sizemore to strikeout swinging.

The away nine extended their lead in the 4th inning. Lee started out the inning by issuing walks to Manny and Youk. Lowell then hit a single loading up the bases for Tek. Tek laced a single to left that scored both Manny and Youk, giving the Sox a 4-1 lead. Lowell and Tek each advanced a base on the throw. Lee settled down and didn’t allow anymore to cross the plate in the inning as he got Crisp, WMP and Lugo out.

After the Sox watched Gabby work another perfect inning in the 4th, they came out swinging in the 5th. Pedroia led off the inning with a single and went to second when Lee walked Big Papi. Manny brought in his third run of the night as he crushed a double to left. With runners now on second and third, Youk hit a grounder that Jhonny Peralta made an error on. This loaded up the bases for Lowell and he didn’t disappoint the Fenway Faithful in Cleveland. He hit a single that scored Manny and Big Papi making it 7-1 Red Sox. Lowell’s single also chased Lee from the game. Jason Stanford took over and got Tek to ground into a double play with Youk moving to third base. Coco brought in Youk with a single and WMP followed with a double on a fastball that scored Coco and gave the Red Sox a commanding 9-1 lead or so we thought. Stanford got out of the inning when Lugo flew out.

Gabbard, who had been excellent so far in the game, came totally unglued at the seams in the 5th. He got Ryan Garko to fly out for the out of the inning. Then he walked Peralta and Jason Michaels hit a single. Gabby rebounded to get Gutierrez for the second out of the inning. Barfield pulled the Tribe closer as he hit a double to deep left center that scored Peralta and Michaels. Sizemore brought in the 4th run of the night for the Indians as he hit a single scoring Barfield. Gabby’s control issues then came back as he issued walks to Casey Blake and Victor Martinez, loading up the bases for a man who you don’t want to face with the bases loaded usually, Travis Hafner. Gabby took the bat out of Hafner’s hands as he plunked him, bringing in another run and cutting the Sox lead to 9-5. The HBP also ended Gabby’s night as Terry Francona called for Yo-Yo Tavarez out of the bullpen. Yo-Yo came in and got Garko to fly out to Coco leaving the bases juiced.

Boston put more distance between themselves and the Indians in the 7th. Stanford got Lowell to strikeout leading off. Varitek followed with a single and Coco moved him over to second with a single of his own. Indians manager Eric Wedge then went to his bullpen to bring in a righty, Tom Mastny, to face WMP. Well Wedge probably wishes he didn’t as WMP hit a laser beam 3-run homer to left center, making it 12-5 Sox. Mastny settled down and got Lugo to fly out and Pedroia to strikeout swinging to end the inning.

The Erie warriors got right back into the game though in their half of the 7th. Barfield started out the inning as he reached on a Lugo throwing error. Yo-Yo then got the first two outs of the inning but then walked Martinez. Hafter, 0 for his last 21, followed that with a single, easily scoring Barfield from second. Yo-Yo then left a pitch out over the plate to Garko and Garko crushed it for a 3-run homer, making it a ballgame again at 12-9 Red Sox. Yo-Yo got out of the inning as he got Peralta to ground back to him. Yo-Yo made another one of those crazy throws as he tried to bounce the ball to Youk. Youk was able to keep his foot on the bag for the third out.

Big Papi led off the 8th inning with a walk from Mastny. Wedge went to his bullpen and summoned Jensen Lewis. Manny rudely greeted Lewis as he took a fastball and planted it in the seats for a 2-run homer and a 14-9 Sox lead. Lewis settled back in and got out of the inning as he retired Youk, Lowell and Varitek.

Hideki Okajima and Javier Lopez worked the last two innings and closed it out for the Sox. The win would go to Yo-Yo as Gabby didn’t pitch the required 5 innings needed for a win.

With the win, the Sox lead goes back to 7.5 games in the AL East as the Yankees got beat in Kansas City. The Sox are now off to the Trop in Tampa Bay where they will hand the ball to Tim Wakefield. Wake will be looking for his 12th win of the season and will be trying to go 8-0 in his career at the Trop.
