Reggie Had A Candy Bar

Reggie Bar, nothing but empty calories

……..But Carl Yastrzemski gets a birth control pill??

Yaz not only helps women prevent pregnancy but “it’s the only birth control proven to treat emotional and physical premenstrual symptoms that are severe enough to impact the lives of women”. Things like fatigue, bloating, moodiness and acne.

I guess I never realized that the 1967 Triple Crown winner made women want to get their groove on without any post grooving consequences.

There’s no word on if the pill is made of or tastes like chocolate.

Now I’m not making fun of PMS or PMDD, as I am well aware of the fact they can be and are serious conditions for some women. I just find it funny that my childhood hero has a birth control pill named after him.

Tim Wakefield continued his domination of the Devil Rays and didn’t even matter he didn’t have Doug Mirabelli. After a rough 1st inning, Kevin Cash settled right in and didn’t allow another passed ball. The win for Wakefield was his 15th and that ties him for the MLB lead with John Lackey and his teammate Josh Beckett. Dustin Pedroia kept his hot hitting up and is looking a like a Rookie of the Year candidate. In the end it was a 6-0 Sox win and it got them back to a 5 game lead in the AL East as the Skanks lost to the Angels. Before Jon Lester takes the ball tonight, let’s take a look at the headlines from the Boston and Tampa area media.

In The Red Zone – 8/21

In the Red Zone logo

According to reviews from Friday’s loss to the Tennessee Titans Kevin Faulk was Kevin Faulk. Gino Cappelletti and Gil Santos on the Patriots Rock Radio Network raved about him and he was very effective on screens and draws.

Rodney Harrison coming to your town to beat the crap out of your teamRodney Harrison seems to be playing like the old Harrison and that is nothing but good news for the Patriots. He was all over the place reeking havoc with the Titans offense and had a huge hit on Vince Young.

Tom Brady and his receiving corps still look a little out of sorts but knowing the perfectionist Brady is, that will all be worked out before Week 1. Right now I’d love to see him and Matt Cassel cut down on the picks as each was intercepted twice. There were also some protection issues and the QBs were steadily rushed, hurried, hit and sacked.

If you’ve never really experienced Bill Belichick here is the transcript of his post game press conference after the Tennessee game. He is a master at saying nothing or admitting nothing. We know his dad spent time as a coach at Navy but from the way he interacts with the media you’d have thought that Bill was trained to be a prisoner of war.

Titans head coach Jeff Fischer said the rain and the constant on-going rush made things difficult for Young on Friday night. The Patriots sacked the second year quarterback four times and he went six attempts in-a-row without a completion at one point. Young was also stopped twice at the Patriots 1 yard line when he attempted to run.

“I think it was the weather, the surface, people in his face. The approach the Patriots took defensively, which was a unique approach,” Fisher said Saturday.

“They brought people almost every down from different places. They dropped different people out in coverage. We went in this game with a very basic game plan and did not put ourselves in position to try to take advantage of those things.”

Prison Break Returns September 17th

If you’re a fan of Prison Break, season 3 begins on September 17th and from this preview, it looks pretty kickass. Of course a lot of things in previews look good then suck, but I have a feeling that this isn’t one of those. Enjoy.

Wakefield, Lowell Lead Sox Over Rays, 6-0

Tim Wakefield went seven shut out innings allowing 4 hits and 1 walk while striking out 5 as the Boston hurler expanded his gaudy record against Tampa Bay to 19-2, including 9-0 in Tropicana Field. While Wakefield was masterful on the mound, Mike Lowell led the offense with a pair of hits, a two-run double in the first and a fifth inning solo homerun, as the Red Sox defeated Scott Kazmir and the listless Devil Rays 6-0.

The Red Sox came out hacking against Kazmir banging out five runs on six hits in the first two innings. Dustin Pedroia got it started with a single to left, Kazmir walked Kevin Youkilis, newly acquired Bobby Kielty grounded back to the mound and all Kazmir could get was a force on Youkilis at second for the first out. Manny Ramirez struck out and just as it looked like Kazmir would escape a jam Lowell doubled down the line in left to score Pedroia and Kielty and give the Sox a 2-0 lead.

Boston would add three more runs in the second of the young lefty. Coco Crisp would get a ground rule double to right on a ball the grazed Delmon Young’s glove and hit the foul line and bounced into the seats. Julio Lugo grounded to short moving Crisp to third, Kevin Cash walked, Pedroia singled to left for his second hit in as many innings to score Crisp and it was 3-0 Boston. Youkilis singled to almost the exact same spot to load the bases with one out. After Kielty whiffed Ramirez made Kazmir pay with a single to center to score Cash and Pedroia and it was 5-0. Ramirez would move to second on a wild pitch, Joe Maddon decided to put Lowell on to load the bases and face J.D. Drew who grounded out to second to end the inning.

Meanwhile Wakefield was up to his old tricks against Tampa Bay silencing the Devil Ray bats. After walking Akinori Iwamura to start the first Wake retired the next 7 hitters before Josh Paul got a single to left. Wakefield would only allow singles in the fourth to Carlos Pena and in the fifth to Josh Wilson while striking out four while keeping Tampa Bay scoreless through five innings.

The Sox added a run in the top of the fifth with one out when Lowell hit a solo homerun, his 17th of the year and 3rd RBI of the night, to make it 6-0. The homerun ended a streak of 8 in-a-row retired by Kazmir. Kazmir after a rough start had settled in and through five innings inspite of being banged around early had struck out seven Red Sox batters including Drew twice.

After getting the first two outs in the top of the sixth including making Cash his 8th strikeout victim, Kazmir walked Pedroia, his fourth of the evening, ending the night for him as Maddon pulled him for reliever Juan Salas who got Youkilis to fly out to end the inning.

Manny Delcarmen would come on in the 8th and pitched a clean inning notching a strike out. Mike Timlin came in to close out the game and the shut out in the ninth, working a 1-2-3 inning, getting one strike out.

Same two teams play tomorrow at Tropicana Field when Jon Lester faces Andy Sonnanstine at 7:05 p.m.

Vick Accepts Plea Deal

Michael Vick is a liar. A big fat liar. He lied to the NFL, he lied to the Falcons organization, he lied to the people of Atlanta, he lied to everyone else and worst of all he lied to himself.

After his 3 co-defendants took plea deals in the federal dogfighting charges, Vick decided it was best for him to plead guilty to those same charges instead of taking his chances in a court of his peers. It has been thought that he will spend at least 12-18 months in jail.

The NFL released this statement in response to Vick’s plea:

“We are aware of Michael Vick’s decision to enter a guilty plea to the federal charges against him and accept responsibility for his conduct. We totally condemn the conduct outlined in the charges, which is inconsistent with what Michael Vick previously told both our office and the Falcons. We will conclude our own review under the league’s personal conduct policy as soon as possible. In the meantime, we have asked the Falcons to continue to refrain from taking action pending a decision by the commissioner.”

Basically Vick screwed the Falcons over. They traded away backup QB Matt Schuab to the Houston Texans in thinking that Vick would be playing this season. Now they will move forward without him. There’s a pretty good chance he’s seen the last of the Atlanta Falcons.

I’ll have more on this as it comes out. Steve will have your Red Sox-Devil Rays game recap.

Red Sox News & Notes – 8/20

Joe Saunders shut down the Red Sox for the second time this season yesterday and was pretty dominating throughout. We had bench-clearing incident with no punches thrown due to Yo-Yo hitting Orlando Cabrera. And we had the return of Eric Gagné to the scene of the crime. All told it wasn’t pretty for the Sox yesterday. Looming now is a 11-day 10-game roadtrip that ends in the Bronx for the games. It’s hard not to look ahead but I’d like to see the Sox go at least 5-2 before getting to NY. Before Kevin Cash gets behind the dish tonight to catch Tim Wakefield, let’s take a look at the headlines and happenings from the Boston and Los Angeles area media on this cool but cloudy day on the shores of Connecticut.
