UConn Huskies 2008 Football Awards

Here is a press release from the UConn Huskies about tonight’s awards given at the football banquet:

UConn Huskies Football LogoSTORRS, Conn. (December 15, 2008) — The University of Connecticut football team held its annual awards ceremony at a team dinner on Monday night at The Burton Family Football Complex.

The team’s Most Valuable Player Award was given to junior running back Donald Brown (Atlantic Highlands, N.J.). Brown was also named the 2008 BIG EAST Conference Offensive Player of the Year and was named a Second Team All-American from the Walter Camp Football Foundation.

Brown was also named the team’s Offensive Player of the Year at the Monday night ceremony. Brown rushed for 1,822 yards and 17 touchdowns during the regular season and has been atop the national leader board in rushing yards (151.8 yards per game) for the majority of the year. He ran for at least 100 yards in 10 games.

The Defensive Player of the Year Award went to senior defensive lineman Cody Brown (Coral Springs, Fla.). Brown was second in the BIG EAST in sacks per game at 0.83 per contest and was also second in the league in tackles for a loss. He made a total of 50 tackles on the season.

Redshirt freshman Robby Frey (Lehighton, Pa.) was named UConn’s Special Teams Player of the Year. Frey saw considerable time at kickoff return duties for UConn and had 13 returns for 276 yards this year.

The Joseph M. Giannelli Unsung Hero Award was split between senior offensive tackle Will Beatty (York, Pa.) and senior safety Dahna Deleston (East Hartford, Conn.). The award is presented to a UConn football player, selected by the coaches, who best displays effort, dedication and steady performance without notice and acclaim, making a significant, but perhaps hidden, contribution to the program.

The John L. Toner Scholar Athlete Award was presented to senior center Keith Gray (Allen, Texas). Gray is a mathematics and actuarial science major and wins the award named after the former UConn athletic director and football coach and NCAA President.

The Football Alumni Award went to senior quarterback Tyler Lorenzen (Fremont, Iowa) and senior tight end Steve Brouse (Selingsgrove, Pa.). The honor is bestowed upon the Husky who best exhibits leadership and dedication and is viewed as the ultimate team player. Both of these players began the year in starting positions, missed time due to injuries and have now recovered to return to the Husky starting. 11.

The Kendall Madison Award was given to senior safety Darius Butler (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) — who was recognized for being a “strong team player whose dedication, hard work and outstanding citizenship best exemplify the strong spirit of the UConn Huskies.” The award is named for the former Husky who was tragically killed in the mid 1990s while being a good samaritan in his attempt to break up an altercation. Butler made 37 tackles on the season with four pass break-ups and also saw time on the other side of the ball as a receiver for the Huskies. His regular season was cut short as he missed the final two games of the season due to injury.

The Brian Kozlowski Award went to senior defensive tackle Julius Williams (Decatur, Ga.) for being courageous, hard working and productive. The award is named for the former Husky tight end, later a 13-year NFL veteran, who through relentless hard work, effort and dedication was able to have a lengthy NFL career.

Pedroia To Play For Team USA In WBC

Dustin PedroiaWhile the roster for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic hasn’t been announced, it’s being reported that AL MVP and Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia will be a member of Team USA according to Rob Bradford of WEEI.com.

Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia has confirmed that he has accepted an invitation to play for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic.

While the WBC may be fun to watch for some, you have to hope, like the article says, that these players avoid injuries. God forbid Pedroia gets hurt (knocks on wood) and the Red Sox lose him for the 2009 season.

Breaking News: Donald Brown To Return For Senior Season

Paw Prints Breaking News

According to a report on ESPN’s ticker, UConn Huskies running back Donald Brown will be returning for his senior season in Storrs.

During Randy Edsall’s weekly session with the media, he made the following statement:

I’ve already told him I don’t want him to go,” Edsall said with a smile. The coach knows the reality, however, and won’t stop Brown if everything looks too good. “It might be too good to pass up,” Edsall said

Guess who's coming back? Tell a friend.

Guess who's coming back? Tell a friend.

Apparently a short time after, Brown made the decision to stay at UConn. He had previously said his goal was to get to a BCS Bowl game while at UConn and now he will have one last chance to do so next year.

“If I need my parents’ help or advice, they’ll give it to me,” Brown said today. “Right now it’s my decision and I don’t see anything changing with where I am on it.”

“Well, then, hopefully the opportunity will be there next year, too,” Brown said. “I want to go to the Orange Bowl. And I think we can get it done next year. I really do.”

While the Huskies will suffer some key losses, having Brown back will be huge for their prospects of actually getting to a bowl game. And if the quarterback situation improves next year (nothing against Tyler Lorenzen by the way), it could make his job easier.

Brown finished up his junior season as the nation’s leading rusher with 1,822 yards. Next up for Brown and the Huskies is a date with the Buffalo Bulls on January 3, 2009 in the International Bowl in Toronto.

Another Reason To Hate Johnny Damon

Johnny DemonEven though it never appeared that the Boston Red Sox were really ever in the A.J. Burnett sweepstakes, they may not have had a chance due to some remarks to him from New York Yankees OF Johnny Damon.

“They had some banter back and forth and developed a relationship,” the official said of Burnett and Damon. “It’s over the last couple of years, just chatting.

“Johnny talked to A.J. about New York, the differences between New York and Boston, how he views it. Johnny couldn’t be happier here and he communicated those thoughts to A.J. I know at one point he told A.J. about dealing with New York and told him, ‘Be accountable. If you’re accountable, you’ll be fine. Don’t fear the media unless you give them a reason.’

“I know on a couple of occasions, Johnny said to him, ‘You don’t have anything to worry about.'”

If you remember back to 2005, Damon spurned the Red Sox for the riches of New York so it’s no surprise that Damon would tell Burnett to come to New York.

For the record Johnny, you haven’t won a playoff series in New York. And by the way, the Red Sox won another World Series title in 2007. So as Fitzy would say, GFY.

Patriots Keep Pace In AFC East With 49-26 Win In Oakland

The Result

The New England Patriots came into their game today knowing that they needed to win to keep pace with the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets at the top of the AFC East. They also didn’t know how Matt Cassel would react after limited practice this week after the death of his father.

Like a true professional, Cassel was able to put aside his grief for 4 quarters of football as he led the Patriots to 4 touchdowns on their first 4 drives to help his team to a 49-26 manhandling of the Oakland Raiders on a rainy afternoon at the Oakland Coliseum.

The win keeps the Patriots tied for 1st place in the AFC East with the Jets and the Dolphins. Based on the tiebreakers right now, the Jets are the division leaders with the Patriots and Dolphins tied with the Baltimore Ravens for the final playoff spot. The Ravens hold that tiebreaker.

On the Patriots third offensive set of the game, he led them on a 9 play 83 yard yard drive that ended on a Sammy Morris 29 yard touchdown run. Considering everything he’s gone through this week, I was impressed with his play. He shared a moment with Bill Belichick after the game and tucked the game ball under shoulder as left the field.

Randy Moss and Lamont Jordan both returned to Oakland for the first time since leaving there (Moss via trade, Jordan via free agency after being cut). They were both showered by boos, with most of them directed at Moss. Both had great games as well as Moss had two touchdown catches and Jordan had a 49 yard touchdown run. As you can see by the picture at the top, Moss let the fans know who he was.

Defensively, the Patriots limited the big plays to just a few. They were also able to take advantage ofthe Raiders porous line to put a lot of pressure on Jamarcus Russell.

Hopefully the injury to Matt Light isn’t too serious as he will be needed during the final two games as the Patriots push for the playoffs continues.

Let’s face it folks. This game wasn’t supposed to hard and it wasn’t.  The Raiders right now are an awful team and an embarrassment. I will give them credit though they never gave up although I think they wished they stayed home instead of getting a beat down in a driving rain.

Offensive Player of the Game

The offensive player of the game could be anyone of the following players.

  • Matt Cassel – 18-of-30 for 218 yards with 4 touchdowns and an interception
  • Sammy Morris – 14 carries for 117 yards and a touchdown
  • Lamont Jordan – 12 carries for 97 yards and a touchdown
  • Wes Welker – 6 catches for 69 yards and a touchdown
  • Randy Moss – 5 catches for 67 yards and 2 touchdowns
  • Kevin Faulk – 6 catches for 66 yards and a touchdown

I’m giving it to Cassel.

Defensive Player of the Game

Who else but the rookie Jerod Mayo. Mayo finished the game with 11 tackles.

Turning Point(s) of the Game

  1. The opening kickoff when a Kelly Washington tackle on the opening kickoff pinned the Raiders deep in their own territory.  The Patriots forced a 3-and-out and got the ball in good field position to set up their first score.
  2. After Justin Miller took a kickoff back for a touchdown to cut the Patriots lead to 28-14, Ellis Hobbs returned the favor with one of his own to put the game out of reach.
