Georges St. Pierre Dominates BJ Penn

The main event of UFC 94 brought a title defense for Georges St. Pierre against BJ Penn. And after almost 4 full rounds of domination, it was GSP who kept his UFC Welterweight Title.

GSP just absolutely owned Penn for the final 3 rounds of the fight. The first round was spent mostly in the clinch with the pair trading blows a few times.

The second round was similiar to the first except that GSP was able to execute a takedown on Penn and just absolutely pounded his face in. In the third round, GSP bloodied Penn’s nose with a jab and then suffered more punishment on the ground before being able to get out of it before trying to execute a takedown of his own that failed. GSP took him down to the ground again and inflicted more damage to Penn’s face and head.

In the 4th round, GSP threw a some nice punches that landed on Penn and then had yet another takedown. He went into side control and just threw punch after punch. At the end of the round, the doctor came over to Penn’s corner and took a look and decided that Penn had had enough devastation for one day. I highly suspect had Penn gone back out, he may have lasted about 15 seconds on the ground as the punishment he took left him completely wiped.

Manny Ramirez Offered Contract By Worcester Tornadoes

Manny Back In Massachusetts?? Former Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Manny Ramirez has a contract offer finally although I’m pretty sure it’s not the one he’s been looking for. The Worcester Tornadoes of the Can-Am League have offered him a 2-year, $24,000 contract. We all know this is just a publicity stunt but it’s also the only offer Manny has on the table right now. I’m pretty sure Manny probably has more than that in his pocket right now. [WorcesterTornadoes.com]

Franchise Tag For Cassel Would Cost $14.6 Million

And to think there is a recession going on: If the New England Patriots were to slap the franchise tag on Matt Cassel, it would cost them $14.6 million in salary next season. Here’s what Cassel had to say. “I don’t know, I really haven’t put much thought into it,” Cassel said. “The franchise tag is the franchise tag, and we’ll see what happens.” He added “that’s crazy” when he found out it would be more than what Tom Brady was making. Could Jason Varitek Retire?

Jason Varitek

Boston Red Sox free agent catcher Jason Varitek could retire according to a baseball source.

From Tony Massarotti of the Boston Globe:

According to a baseball source, the deadline by which Varitek must accept or decline the Red Sox’ latest contract offer is set for tomorrow morning 8:30 AM leaving less than a day for the matter to play out. According to the same source, Varitek is very seriously considering the option of sitting out the 2009 season and/or retiring rather than accepting the contract offer made to him last week.

Though Varitek appears to have no other suitors at this time, it would not be unprecedented for him to sit out (or retire) until he receives an offer to his liking. With agent Scott Boras advising him at that time, too, Varitek sat out an entire year after being drafted in the first round by the Minnesota Twins in 1993. He then re-entered the draft and was selected by the Seattle Mariners in 1994, who eventually signed the player.

Massarotti adds that the Red Sox will start talking with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Texas Rangers about Miguel Montero and Jarrod Saltalamacchia respectively.

This could be Boras and Varitek’s way of trying to get themselves a better deal. But who knows it could backfire on them as the Red Sox already don’t like Boras from their dealings with Mark Teixeira.

Let’s hope that it doesn’t come to this (Varitek retiring or sitting out). Varitek is much needed for this Red Sox team.

UPDATE 5:41 PM: Tony Mazz changed the time in his blog post from tomorrow morning to an 8:30 AM deadline.

Dyson Leads UConn Past DePaul 71-49

Jerome Dyson had 18 points, including the 1,000th point of his UConn career, to lead the No. 2 Huskies to a 71-49 Big East win over the DePaul Blue Demons at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, IL.

It’s the 8th straight win for the Huskies who improve to 19-1 (8-1 Big East) while the Blue Demons fall to 8-13 (0-8).

(AP Photo/Jim Prisching)Three other Huskies were in double figures including  Jeff Adrien, A.J. Price and Hasheem Thabeet. Adrien had his 6th straight double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds while Price finished with 12 points. Thabeet narrowly missed a double-double with 11 points and 9 rebounds along with 3 blocked shots. Craig Austrie came off the bench to score 9 points.

DePaul was led by Dar Tucker who led all scorers in the game with 20 points. Will Walker added 12 points and 6 rebounds in the losing effort.

DePaul got out to an early 8-5 lead before the Huskies responded with a 10-0 run. The lead for the Huskies swelled to 14 points at 34-20 before Tucker helped get the Blue Demons back in the game cutting UConn’s lead to 41-35 in the second half.

The Huskies turned up the defensive pressure in the 2nd half as they held DePaul without a field goal for the first 4:09. It didn’t help matters though as the Huskies were only able to increase their lead to 10 points. As time wore on though, the Huskies defensive pressure and athleticism on the offensive end were just too much for the Blue Demons as UConn continued to build it’s lead over time.

Plus it doesn’t help when you only score 14 points in the second half like DePaul did.

With the win tonight and Duke losing, the Huskies could take over the No. 1 spot in the land if they can beat the Providence Friars on Saturday afternoon at Gampel Pavilion. Tip is scheduled for 4 PM and the game will be televised locally on MyTV9.
