Great Day For Fenway Sports Group

Carl EdwardsWell by now you know the Red Sox absolutely mauled the White Sox, 14-2 and that Tim Wakefield has 16 wins and has thrown 22 straight shut out innings. But the Fenway Sports Group, part of Rousch Fenway Racing, added another feather in their cap when Carl Edwards won the NASCAR Nextel Cup Sharpie 500 race in Bristol TN last night.

The win clinched Edwards a spot in the Top 12 in the Chase for the Nextel Cup and earned him 10 bonus points. Edwards made The Chase in 2005 and finished third, he failed to make the field last season.

The Chase which begins with the September 16th race at Loudon NH will be seeded based on bonus points and with 20 bonus points Edwards is currently tied for third with Kurt Busch in the seedings.

Reggie Miller Says No To Comeback

Celtics ball wall logo

Former NBA All-Star Reggie Miller has decided against coming back to the league with the Boston Celtics or any other team.

Reggie Miller compositeMiller, who is now a TNT basketball analyst, worked out for the last two weeks to see if he could still handle the rigors of a NBA season. While he feels he can handle it physically it is the mental aspect he has concerns about.

“That’s it,” he told The Indianapolis Star. “Physically, I know I could have done it. But mentally, when you do something like this, you’ve either got to be all in or all out. And I’ve decided I’m all out.”

“When I was back in Indy this week, people on the streets, they’d tell me to do it,” Miller told the newspaper. “But as the day went on, I just realized I wasn’t ready mentally to put myself through the grind again.”

Miller, the NBA’s all-time leading 3-point scorer, played 18 seasons in the league all of them with the Indianapolis Pacers. He retired in 2005.

Updated: Could Vick Lose Plea Deal?

According to reports on ESPN.com, Michael Vick will plead guilty on only one of the counts he was charged with. He will not plead guilty to killing the dogs or the gambling but will enter a guilty plea to the charge of interstate commerce for the purpose of dogfighting on Monday in Richmond, VA.

The source told ESPN that Vick’s defense team met with federal attorneys Thursday afternoon to determine the “summary of facts” to which Vick will plead, and that his attorneys believed they had a deal. The source said Vick maintains he never killed dogs and never gambled on a dog fight.

It is kind of ironic that he will only plead guilty to that count and not the others considering that his 3 former co-defendants have stated that Vick gave all the money for the gambling and the operation of the kennel. They also said that he was a participant of the execution of 8 of the dogs in various ways.

Something just doesn’t sound right here. If the former 3 co-defendants are pleading guilty and implicating Vick with their testimony as per their plea agreements, how in the world are federal prosecutors going to accept this decision. It would seem to counteract the plea agreements of the former 3 co-defendants. And would the federal prosecutors accept this as part of their plea arrangement with Vick.

I guess only time will tell that. I really hope that they don’t accept this and go to trial with the overwhelming evidence against him.

Update: Vick has filed his plea agreement in court today and has admitted to the dogfighting charges and to killing the dogs. He denies the gambling charges but admits to bankrolling the fights.

“Most of the Bad Newz Kennels operation and gambling monies were provided by Vick,” a summary of facts in the case said, echoing language in plea agreements by three co-defendants who previously pleaded guilty.

“Vick did not gamble by placing side bets on any of the fights. Vick did not receive any of the proceeds of the purses that were won by Bad Newz Kennels,” the summary said.

Vick will formally file his plea in court on Monday. Federal prosecutors have recommended a 12-18 month sentence but the judge is not bound by that. He will not be sentenced on Monday.

So it looks as though the plea arrangement will stick.

The 2007-08 MLB Free Agent Class

Andy MessersmithDave McNally

Each year after the completion of the World Series and for the next 15 days players who are eligible for free agency may file with the commissioner’s office. During those 15 days they may only negotiate with their 2007 teams. After the 15 days they can negotiate with any major league ball club.

Free agency came about on December 23, 1975 when pitchers Andy Messersmith and Dave McNally successfully challenged the reserve clause (Section 10A) in all MLB contracts.

In a 64-page ruling, arbitrator Peter Seitz ruled that “There is no contractual bond between these players and the Los Angeles and Montreal clubs, respectively.”

The players became free agents. After making the ruling, Seitz was immediately fired by the owners as baseball’s arbitrator.

Technically, Jim “Catfish” Hunter was the first free agent when after the 1974 season he was declared eligible to sign with any team when Oakland owner Charlie Finley failed to pay a $50,000 insurance annuity as called for in Hunter’s contract with the A’s. He then signed a 5-year contract worth $3.35 million dollars. His salary jumped from $100,000 in 1974 to nearly $700,000 in 1975.

Baseball’s first great free agent class came after the 1976 when 22 players filed. It included Baltimore teammates Reggie Jackson and Bobby Grich, Oakland’s Joe Rudi, Rollie Fingers and Don Baylor, Cincinnati’s Don Gullett and San Francisco’s Gary Matthews.

Jonathan Brady

Tom and the newest MILF

The ladies at Inside Track are reporting that Bridget Moynahan and Tom Brady are reportedly going to name their son Jonathan Brady. They also report via In Touch Magazine that the baby was 7 lbs, 14 ounces and 22 inches long.

Reportedly pictures of the new Brady baby will go for $100,000. They seem to think that by selling the photos it will hopefully put a stop to the paparazzi following them. They also plan to wait a week before releasing the pictures.

Rumor is that TFB will be in uniform tonight for their nationally televised exhibition game against the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte.

Sports On The Vegas Strip

The general area for the proposed arena is behind these casinos

Casino giant Harrah’s Entertainment will partner with AEG as they plan to build a 20,000-seat arena in Las Vegas to draw a NBA or NHL team or both.

AEG, a subsidiary of Denver billionaire and Qwest Communications founder Philip Anschutz’s Anschutz Co., owns the Galaxy and the Staples Center in Los Angeles. It has said in the past that it was in talks with professional franchises and potential owners to move a team to the city.

Projected to open in 2010, the $500 million arena will sit behind Bally’s and the Paris hotel casinos on the Las Vegas strip. It’s a first step in trying to lure a pro sports team to a city that has tried to convince league officials to look past the Las Vegas sports book industry.

Las Vegas hosted the 2007 NBA All-Star game but the league said it was unlikely to return unless there was a modern arena in place. The NHL said that while the arena news “positively impacts the prospects of Las Vegas attracting a major league franchise, there was nothing new to report” regarding expansion or a possible franchise move to Nevada.

Even without a sports franchise the arena would be viable by hosting concerts, fights and other events and likely the sale of naming rights.

Until now, such events as big boxing matches, mixed martial arts fights and large concerts have been held at the aging Thomas and Mack Center on the UNLV campus or at the MGM Grand Garden Arena or the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman (wasn’t he Steve Austin’s boss?) says the deal doesn’t slow down the city’s plans for a $9.5 billion sports arena with casino, retail and residential uses downtown to be built by the Michigan based REI Group, LLC.

Any team that wants to locate in Las Vegas could now shop between two large venues for a home, he said.

“With the competition, they’re going to be able to get a better deal,” Goodman said. “So it’s a win-win.”

Cowboys 30 Ravens 3

Oops. Sorry about that. For some reason when I was looking at the baseball scores tonight, I thought they had put a football score in with the baseball scores.

In all seriousness, I had an idea of what was going on because Anthony was doing our radio show from Camden Yards tonight and was giving us score updates. When the show ended it was the Rangers 24 and the Orioles 3. When the game ended, the Rangers had won the game 30-3.

The 30 runs by the Rangers is a modern day MLB record and is also the American League record. It is also the most runs scored in a game by a team since June 29, 1897 when the Chicago Colts (now as the Cubs) put up a 36 spot on the Louisville Colonels.

The heroes of the game for the Rangers were anyone who played for them. Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Ramon Vazquez were 4-6 with 2 homers and 7 RBIs.

And btw, that was only the first game of a doubleheader. Texas put up 9 more runs in the second game to win that one as well.
