UConn Men to Play Maryland In 2015 Jimmy V Men’s Basketball Classic

From UConn:

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The UConn men’s basketball program will play in the 2015 Jimmy V Men’s Basketball Classic, as announced by the foundation on Monday. The Huskies will play Maryland, while Virginia will face West Virginia in the event’s doubleheader that is set for Dec. 8, 2015 at New York City’s famed Madison Square Garden. All proceeds from the two games, which will be aired on ESPN, will go to benefit The V Foundation for Cancer Research in the annual event’s 21st year of existence.

Jimmy V ClassicConnecticut’s game against Maryland will mark UConn’s second appearance in the Jimmy V Men’s Basketball Classic. The Huskies fell to then No. 25 N.C. State, 69-65, on Dec. 4, 2012 despite double-digit efforts from Shabazz Napier (19 points) and current UConn guard Ryan Boatright (18 points).

“We at UConn are honored and proud to again be asked to participate in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden,” UConn men’s basketball coach Kevin Ollie said. “First and foremost, we are pleased to be able to help the V Foundation, which does such an outstanding job funding research to move us closer to someday wiping out this terrible disease.”

All four teams have been ranked in the early part of the 2014 season. The current AP poll includes No. 7 Virginia, No. 16 West Virginia, No. 21 Maryland and defending national champion UConn receiving votes after being as high as No. 17 in the first two weeks of the season.

The early-season event will conclude the ninth annual Jimmy V Week for Cancer Research that begins on December 2 in 2015. The weeklong initiative across multiple ESPN platforms and programs features special content to help raise funds for cancer research. In 2013, Jimmy V Week raised a record $1.8 million, bringing the seven-year total of contributions to more than $8.2 million.

The 2014 Jimmy V Week will culminate with the Jimmy V Men’s Basketball Classic Presented by Corona – from Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, Dec. 9, on ESPN: No. 10 Villanova vs. No. 24 Illinois at 7 p.m., followed by Indiana vs. No. 5 Louisville at 9 p.m.

West Virginia vs. Virginia: The all-time series stands at 8-8 with the last meeting dating back to the 1985 National Invitation Tournament, a 56-55 UVA victory. Virginia played in the 2000 Jimmy V Classic, a 107-89 win over Tennessee. West Virginia participated in 2008, a 68-65 loss to Davidson.

Maryland vs. UConn: UConn holds a 4-2 advantage in the series with the last four meetings on a neutral court. Maryland will be playing in its first Jimmy V Classic.

Coaches Quotes

“We are delighted to be an invited once again to participate in the Jimmy V Classic. The Jimmy V Classic is one of the premier events during the college basketball season. We are honored to play in such a special event for a great cause, and I know our fans will be excited to see us play on ESPN and in Madison Square Garden, a place where we have had great memories over the years. Most importantly, the Jimmy V Classic and Jimmy V Week brings awareness to such a terrible disease because every one of us has been affected by cancer in one way or another. When we lost our mother in 2003, my family and I started the Norma Mae Huggins Cancer Research Endowment Fund, and we have raised almost a million dollars in cancer research. We all need to join the fight to end this deadly disease.” – Bob Huggins, West Virginia head coach

“We are certainly honored to play West Virginia in the 2015 Jimmy V Men’s Basketball Classic.” Virginia head coach Tony Bennett said. “To have an opportunity to be part of this classic and what it stands for, and to play a quality opponent at The Garden is great for our program.” – Tony Bennett, Virginia head coach

“We are excited that our program will have the opportunity to play on the national stage in one of the premier early-season tournaments in the country. It’s a tremendous field comprised of some of the nation’s top programs.  It is also an honor to compete in this event, which for more than two decades has raised money and awareness in the fight against cancer.” – Mark Turgeon, Maryland head coach

“We at UConn are honored and proud to again be asked to participate in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden. First and foremost, we are pleased to be able to help the V Foundation, which does such an outstanding job funding research to move us closer to someday wiping out this terrible disease.

Secondly, we are looking forward to playing against another great program in Maryland, and in such an exciting basketball atmosphere as Madison Square Garden, where our fans always give us such tremendous support.” – Kevin Ollie, UConn head coach

Tickets for the Jimmy V Classic will go on sale in the fall of 2015. Ticket prices range from $15-$275 and will be available for purchase at the Madison Square Garden Box Office, Ticketmaster charge by phone at (866) 858-0008 and online at www.ticketmaster.com and www.thegarden.com.

Morgan Tuck Honored as American Athletic Conference Player of the Week

From UConn and the American Athletic Conference:

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Days after helping the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team to a convincing 76-58 victory over No. 2 Notre Dame, redshirt-sophomore forward Morgan Tuck (Bolingbrook, Ill.) has been named as the American Athletic Conference Player of the week, as announced by the league on Monday.

UConn F Morgan Tuck (3) attempts a three-pointer against Creighton at Gampel Pavilion on November 23, 2014.The forward put together a career-best afternoon on Saturday at Purcell Pavilion, knocking down 12 shots en route to 25 points in 35 minutes. She also dished out three assists and pulled down nine boards in the win. The accolade marks the second time a Husky player has been named Player of the Week this season after junior forward Breanna Stewart earned the honor on Nov. 24.

Tuck, who missed all but eight games in 2013-14, has put together a solid bounce-back season, averaging 14.3 points and 4.9 rebounds in seven games. She’s reached double-figure scoring in all but one game this season and is shooting an impressive 39-of-79 (.494) from the field. Tuck has earned the starting nod in each of the Huskies’ last five games.

As a team, UConn (6-1) has rattled off five-straight victories after suffering a setback to then-ranked No. 6 Stanford in early November. The squad holds an impressive +35.3 average margin of victory and is shooting 52.3 from the field.

The Huskies are in the midst of a 13-day before for final exams before returning to the court on Friday, Dec. 19 when they host DePaul at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.

SMU No Longer Winless After Beating UConn 27-20

SMU QB Matt Davis (4) dives into the end zone for a touchdown after a 26 yard run against UConn in the third quarter at Rentschler Field on December 6, 2014.

SMU QB Matt Davis (4) dives into the end zone for a touchdown after a 26 yard run against UConn in the third quarter at Rentschler Field on December 6, 2014.

On Friday night, UConn Huskies basketball coach Kevin Ollie said his team had hit bottom after losing to Yale. You have to figure the UConn Football team might be right there with them.

The SMU Mustangs came into the game on Saturday not having won a game. But when the final whistle blew, they found themselves with their only win of the season when they beat UConn 27-20 in front of an announced crowd of 22,921 at rainy Rentschler Field in East Hartford, CT.

UConn finishes the season at 2-10 (1-7 American). SMU ends their season at 1-11 (1-7 American).

So how did UConn lose this one, especially after being up 20-6. As has been the case for now eight of their ten losses, they beat themselves with turnovers.

The Huskies had five turnovers (four fumbles, one interception).

“You can’t beat anybody when you turn the ball over five times,” said head coach Bob Diaco. “It’s impossible.”

UConn had built up a 20-6 lead at the half on the strength of their run game and defense. In the second half, they failed to show up on both sides of the ball. Plus the turnovers didn’t help matters.

The Huskies were to receive the ball to start the second half but on the kickoff Arkeel Newsome fumbled it and the Mustangs recovered. They would go in to score to cut the lead to 20-13.

After going three and out, then holding on SMU on their ensuing drive, Deshon Foxx fumbled the ball and it was recovered by the Mustangs. Seven plays later, the game was tied at 20-20.

SMU would go ahead for good after blocking a Bobby Puyol field goal. They got the ball at their own 30 and drove it 70 yards capped off Prescott Line who ran in a 12 yard touchdown.

After moving the ball their ball 21 yards after a Brian Lemelle kick return to his 26 yard line, Max DeLorenzo fumbled the ball on a hit from Kevin Pope. UConn would get the ball back after Andrew Adams forced a fumble but the inept offense went three-and-out.

From there, the SMU offense ran out the final 4:13 of the game although they did have some trouble executing the victory formation at the end. They were called for two penalties of illegal formation and finally went to a normal one that saw their QB Matt Davis take a knee that way.

I guess that’s what happens when you haven’t won a game until that point.

“We have to eliminate the things that cause losing,” said Diaco.

Well until the Huskies figure out how to do that, they won’t be any good next year either.

SMU Mustangs @ UConn Huskies 12/6/14 box score

Here are the postgame notes courtesy of UConn Athletic Communications:

  • UConn is now 0-3 all-time against SMU.
  • The Huskies conclude their 2014 home slate with a 2-5 record. UConn is now 50-28 all-time at Rentschler Field, its home since the 2003 season.
  • The Huskies recorded a season-high 249 rushing yards. It was UConn’s first 200-yard rushing game since Oct. 12, 2013 vs. USF.
  • Ron Johnson set a new career-high with 101 yards on the ground. He also became the first UConn running back to record 100 yards in a game this season. Deshon Foxx, a wide receiver, rushed for 102 yards vs. UCF on Nov. 1.
  • Max DeLorenzo’s 46-yard touchdown run in the second quarter was the longest rush of his career. DeLorenzo finished the day a season-high 66 yards on the ground on seven carries.
  • DeLorenzo’s run was the longest for a UConn running back this season. Deshon Foxx had the longest run for any player, a 68-yard score vs. UCF.
  • Andrew Adams returned a fumble 32 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. It was the first touchdown of his career.
  • The defensive touchdown was UConn’s first since a 70-yard interception return for a score from Byron Jones against USF on Sept. 19.
  • Josh Marriner’s 38-yard reception in the second quarter was the longest catch of his career.
  • Jamar Summers recorded his first career interception in the second quarter.
  • Jhavon Williams forced two fumbles and recovered another.
  • Geremy Davis’ second-quarter catch gave him at least one reception in 36 consecutive games played to close his career .
  • Davis finished his career with 165 receptions, fifth all-time, and 2,292 receiving yards which is sixth-most in program history. Both marks are the highest of any player in UConn’s FBS era.
  • UConn had 165 rushing yards in the first half, most in a half this season. The Huskies also set a first-half high with 20 points in the first 30 minutes.

SMU beat UConn to escape a winless season, and it’s not the first time the Mustangs program has been in a low place and gotten a win over the Huskies. When SMU returned from the Death Penalty in 1989, their first win was a 31-30 victory over UConn (ESPN Stats & Info).

The lead gift for the memorial came from former UConn head football coach Randy Edsall, who was Howard’s coach with the Huskies. Donations also came from former Husky student-athletes and fans from around the country.

Howard lost his life on October 18, 2009 – hours after UConn had defeated Louisville at Rentschler Field on Homecoming. Howard recorded a career-high 11 tackles in the contest and a fumble recovery.

Funds will continue to be raised for the Jasper T. Howard Endowed Scholarship Fund at UConn, which is presented annually to a cornerback on the Husky football team who best embodies the qualities of Howard.

For information on how to contribute to that fund, please visit http://s.uconn.edu/howardscholarship.

The statue is made of barre grey granite quarried in Barre, Vt. It is a three-piece memorial that has an overall height of seven feet and weighs 3.25 tons. The top piece of granite is carved into mirror 6’s so whether viewing from the front or back it is a 6 and is colored to replicate the home jersey Howard wore.

The pedestal which the 6 sits on top of is lettered on the East and West facing sides. The east side has a quote from Jasper and is accented by 23kt gold leafed letters. The west side contains a narrative of Jasper’s life and a porcelain picture of Jasper. K. G. Keena Memorials of East Hartford, Manchester Monument Company of Manchester and Wethersfield Monument of Wethersfield designed, created and installed the piece.

SMU announced the hiring of Chad Morris as its new Head Football Coach on Dec. 1. Morris comes from Clemson, where he had served as Offensive Coordinator for the past four seasons. He helped the Tigers go 41-11 during his time in Death Valley, including four bowl berths and the 2011 ACC Championship. Morris, who was born in Dallas, spent 16 seasons as a coach in the Texas high school ranks.

SMU Athletics has entered into a multiyear partnership with Unequal® Technologies, the leading provider of customized, concealed sports protection. Unequal will be The Official Protection Partner of SMU Football, and each SMU football helmet will be outfitted with the Unequal Gyro, a supplemental helmet liner fortified with Kevlar® and Accelleron®, which predicts a significantly lower risk of concussions. SMU is the first NCAA Division I football program to partner with Unequal for team-wide protective gear.

Sophomore receiver/kick returner Deion Sanders Jr., totaled 203 kick return yards at UCF on Nov. 22, setting a new SMU single-game record in that category.

Prior to the 2009 season, the SMU coaching staff announced that a deserving student-athlete would be chosen to wear the number “23” on his jersey throughout the season to honor Jerry LeVias for his contributions to America, the sport of football and SMU. Stephon Sanders has the honor again in 2014.

SMU senior wide receiver Stephen Nelson has been nominated for the Burlsworth Trophy, which is given annually to the Division I collegiate player who began their career as a walk-on and has shown outstanding performance on the field.
