Here’s a press release from the UConn Athletic Communications Department about adding a game to the 2010 UConn Huskies football schedule.

STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut has announced that Texas Southern University (Houston, Texas) of the Southwestern Athletic Conference has been added to its 2010 non-conference football schedule, replacing Northeastern University. The game, UConn’s home opener, will be played on Sept. 11 at Rentschler Field. Connecticut was originally scheduled to play Northeastern on that day, but four weeks ago the institution announced it would no longer sponsor a football team.

Connecticut’s other non-conference dates for 2010 are: Saturday, Sept. 4, at Michigan; Saturday, Sept. 18, at Temple (Lincoln Financial Field); Saturday, Sept. 25, vs. Buffalo at Rentschler Field; Saturday, October 2, vs. Vanderbilt at Rentschler Field.

“I believe that it takes certain players to play here and when you have those players you don’t want to lose them. I hope that…I don’t want to lose the Mikey Lowell’s, the JBay’s, those type of people that are ball players. And that’s out our control but still having played with them, I’ll go to war and put them in the trenches anytime.”

Quote of the Day: Theo Epstein Part 2

Theo Epstein - AP Photo

“I’m ready to jump in with Lackey who won Game 7 in 2002 against the San Francisco Giants when he was a rookie with Anaheim, Beckett pitched a shutout for Florida in Game 6 in 2003 against the Yankees, and Lester finished off Colorado in Game 4 in 2007. We could not only make next year’s rotation potentially elite but really solidify our rotation for a long time with the addition of John Lackey.”

“I sent Josh a text message. I said, ‘Some might speculate this means the end of you in Boston. Don’t listen to them. You’re a huge part of what we’ve got going on here and we’d love it if it worked out that you were part of our future as well. And the most important thing is we have one heckuva pitching staff right now.’

“He texted back and said he was excited about the sign. He knows John a little bit, thinks he’s a good man and a great pitcher, and he’s ready to go for spring training. I don’t think it impacts Josh nearly to the degree people have been speculating.”
