Hope Springs Eternal

It’s not April anymore. That was the go-to explanation/justification for the struggles of the Red Sox. Now that the calendar has turned, many feel it’s open season on the Sox. I say that as long as it is spring, we’ve got some time. The baseball season is long. There will be ups and downs. Problems in summer will sink you. Problems in spring aren’t fun, but you can recover.

As a fan, it is ok to whine a little. To worry and to wonder are just a part of the whole experience of supporting a team from the stands. There is no need to belittle, to boo, or to bash, however. Let the competition trash us and the “analysts” pick us apart. Let Francona whip the boys into shape and let Epstein make any necessary transactions. Our job as fans is simply to “root, root, root” for the Red Sox!

We fans may be frustrated, but think how the players must feel? Of course, they have millions of dollars to comfort them, but they don’t play only for the salary. They play for pride and honor as well. Our players who are struggling right now don’t want to be in hitting slumps, missing the plate, or committing errors. And I’m sure hearing angry and critical comments from the people who support them doesn’t make it any better.

I once got a fortune cookie that read “Be an optimist. There isn’t much use in being any thing else.” That may be too naive for “real life,” but in the world of sports fanhood, those are words to live by.

Go Red Sox!

The Week Ahead With The Bottom Line & Fenway West

Each week, Rob from The Bottom Line, Matt from Fenway West and myself will take a few moments to answer questions about the week ahead for the Red Sox. It was my turn to ask this week so here are their answers to my questions.

1. Things were looking on the up and up after the sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays and then the Orioles sweep the Red Sox this weekend. What went wrong for the Red Sox this weekend?

BL:This series in Baltimore was a microcosm of the 2010 season. On Friday, the bullpen blew a solid 7-inning outing from Lackey. On Saturday, the offense put up 9 runs, but the Sox lost thanks to a Matsuzaka implosion in the 5th and a disastrous outing from Wakefield as an RP. And on Sunday, the Sox took the field with a lineup full of AAA guys and guys on AARP. Beckett pitched well, but the offense didn’t help and then Papelbon blew it in the 10th

FW: This series very easily could have gone the other way with the Red Sox winning all three games. The frustrating thing about the Red Sox is the inconsistency in all areas. It would be nice if you could point to one thing and make a fix but one day it is the defense, the next it is starting pitching and then the next day it is the bullpen.

2. While J.D. Drew is starting to heat up a little at the plate, the strikeouts are a little concerning. But the question is how come he’s basically gotten a free pass from the media and bloggers on his slow start but Big Papi takes all the heat?

BL: JD Drew is not the “greatest clutch hitter in Red Sox history.” Ortiz set the bar very high in his prime, so his decline looks that much more dramatic. Drew has been an “underachiever” from day one, so his slumps and hot streaks are taken with a grain of salt. Also, Drew is a robot, and that bugs some people, but the media when Ortiz starts swearing at reporters and Drew is quietly praying at his locker, who do you think they are going to write about?

FW: I think Papi gets more heat because people think he is done for his career where they think J.D. is just in a slump.

3. Speaking of Big Papi, it looked like he was back on Saturday night after hitting two home runs. But he still went 2-for-11 in the series. Should we be worried about Big Papi’s bat?

BL: Yes. Ortiz hit .303 against BAL, KC, CLE and TEX in 2009. He hit just .208 against NYY, TB, MIN and LAA. I hate to quote Dan Shaughnessy, but he’s right when he says “Ortiz put up phony numbers against bad pitching in 2009.” You have to play the teams on your schedule, but don’t I expect Ortiz to have any big hits against the cream of the crop.

FW: I don’t think we are going to see the Big Papi we saw in ’06 again but that doesn’t mean he can’t contribute. I like Tito’s approach of having him platoon until he gets his swing back.

4. How many chances will Terry Francona give Daisuke Matsuzaka if he has another bad start? Can the Red Sox afford to keep him in the rotation if he struggles next time out?

BL: Wakefield hasn’t proven that he deserves to start over Matsuzaka and Dice-K will not be effective out of the bullpen. Unless Matsuzaka completely unravels in 3 or 4 starts in a row, Wake will be stuck in the pen and we will be stuck watching Matsuzaka struggle to throw 6 quality innings.

FW: I think you have to give a starter four starts before you think about making moves. Look at the bad starts Lester and Beckett had and nobody is talking about taking them out of the rotation. Having Wakefield ready to go puts more pressure on Dice-K, but Tito made his choice with the rotation so he needs to see it through.

5. The sweep of Baltimore is a little disconcerting considering the upcoming schedule. I know it’s a little too early to hit the panic button but should we be worried about the Red Sox’s hopes considering how well the Yankees and Rays are playing.

BL: Yes. I see no reason to believe that the Sox can win a series against the Yankees, so this upcoming series in Fenway could really put them in a hole. The Rays won’t play .700 baseball all season, but they are good enough to keep a .600 pace… and so are the Yankees. If the Red Sox are still 7 games out of first on June 1, you can start making other plans for October.

FW: The wild-card is coming out of the AL East this season and the Red Sox can not afford to keep digging the hole they are in. There is still plenty of baseball to be played so it is not time to panic yet. If at the end of May the team is still sub .500 I will be reaching for the panic button.

6. Who will be your MVP of the coming week?

BL: Kevin Youkilis hit the Angles and Yankees well in 2009, and despite some major changes to both teams, I expect him to lead the way through this home stand, after leading the team with a .321 BA at Fenway last year.

FW: I’m going with Marco Scutaro. He will be at the top of the order until Ells comes back and will set the table well in the coming week. He has a nice hit streak going and is becoming a selective hitter; he is second on the team in walks.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 5/3

How bad were things for the Boston Red Sox this weekend? We had a Baltimore Orioles fan talking trash on the site.

Basically you can sum up the entire weekend to way the 2010 season has gone for the Red Sox. They look great at times and they look like awful at other times. We saw a mix of that this weekend.

After some poor starts, Josh Beckett looked pretty good out on the mound at times. While he was having trouble with his curveball at times, the rest of his other pitches were working. He ended up scattering six hits over seven innings while allowing two runs. He didn’t walk anyone and finished with six strikeouts.

Daniel Bard got himself into trouble in the 8th inning, loading up the bases but he was able to work himself out of trouble and keep the Red Sox alive. After allowing a double to Matt Wieters with one out in the 9th, Jonathan Papelbon retired the next two batters to send it to extra innings.

But unfortunately he had some trouble in the 10th as he walked Nick Markakis and then made a throwing error trying to pick Markakis off at first that moved him to second. Ty Wigginton followed that with a double to deep center to give the Orioles the three-game sweep.

There was one thing I didn’t understand in the game yesterday.

The Red Sox had Jason Varitek on second base with one out in the 8th. Terry Francona then pinch-hit Victor Martinez for Jonathan Van Every and he ended up flying out to center. The part I didn’t understand was that if he knew Bill Hall was coming into the game to take over for JVE, why didn’t he pinch-run Hall for Tek and have VMart catch.

After a walk to Marco Scutaro, Dustin Pedroia hit a single to left. While third base coach Tim Bogar made the right call in sending Tek home, a perfect throw by Orioles left field Nolan Reimold easily nailed him at the plate. Now if Tito had pinch-run Hall for Tek, it’s quite possible that Hall could have scored.

Instead, the Red Sox head back to Boston with their tails between their legs much closer to last place than first place. And the schedule doesn’t get much easier the rest of the month as they’ll kick off a 10-game homestand with four games against the Angels and then three with the Yankees.

We’ll be back later with a look at the week ahead with The Bottom Line and Fenway West as well as the lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day but for now enjoy the overnight links.

Late Morning Red Sox Delight – 5/2

Josh Beckett (L), Kevin Millwood (R) - AP Photos

The Boston Red Sox went into this weekend’s series with the Baltimore Orioles coming off a 3-game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays. Now this afternoon, the Red Sox look to avoid being swept by the last place Orioles.

This afternoon’s game will start at 1:35 p.m. and will be shown on NESN in the Red Sox television market. The game can be seen in the Orioles television market on MASN and WJZ-13. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2010 Red Sox radio network.

Josh Beckett will be asked to help the Red Sox avoid the sweep by the Orioles. He’s made five starts this season and is 1-0 with a 7.22 ERA. He hasn’t faced the Orioles yet this season but was 2-0 with a 3.60 ERA in three starts against them in 2009. Overall in his career, Beckett is 6-2 with a 3.70 ERA in 12 starts against them. In eight career starts at Camden Yards, he is 5-1 with a 3.04 ERA.

Kevin Millwood has made five starts for the Orioles in 2010 and is 0-3 with a 3.38 ERA. He hasn’t faced the Red Sox in 2010 but was 2-0 with a 1.45 ERA in three starts against them as a member of the Texas Rangers in 2009. Millwood has made 15 career starts against the Red Sox and is 6-4 with a 3.84 ERA.

Manager Terry Francona of the Boston Red Sox removes Daisuke Matsuzaka #18 in the fifth inning of the game against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards on May 1, 2010 in Baltimore, Maryland. (Photo by Greg Fiume/Getty Images)

It looked like Orioles Park at Camden Yards turned into Coors Field as the Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox combined for ten home runs. The Orioles won that battle out-homering the Red Sox 6-4 and also taking the game, winning 12-9 on Saturday night.

Daisuke Matsuzaka made his first start of 2010 for the Red Sox and looked great for the first four innings, allowing just one hit and one run. Then the 5th inning happened where he was rocked for six runs. Tim Wakefield took over for Dice-K and wasn’t much better as he was torched for five runs.

While Dice-K gave up a few walks early on, he was able to work out of any trouble they put him in except for the first inning run. But in the 5th, he had trouble locating his fastball and the Orioles took full advantage of that. Whenever Dice-K takes the mound, we never really know what we’re going to get. And last night it was the Dice-K that shouldn’t really be in the rotation right now.

If he gets lit up again in his next start, you have to wonder what the Red Sox will do with him. They have a lot of money invested in him and releasing him isn’t an option. He’s got a clause in his contract that he can’t go to the minors so they’d probably have to put him in the bullpen, switching spots with Wake.

You can’t really blame Wake for his troubles last night. He was making his first appearance out of the bullpen in a very long time. It’s not an easy transition when you’ve been starting all season and then suddenly are forced to change your routine. Baseball players are creatures of habit and anything that changes that, can be disruptful.

On Saturday morning, I wrote that David Ortiz looked like he was entering his final days of wearing a Red Sox uniform. I will now eat my words. After watching him hit two home runs on Saturday night, including a towering shot off of a lefty, I fully think that he’s back.

The swing he made on the home run off Alberto Castillo was remincisent of Big Papi past. Terry Francona said he would get regular playing time over the weekend and it’s starting to pay off. Let’s just hope Big Papi builds off of last night’s two home runs and continues it as the Red Sox go forward.

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 5/1

Daisuke Matsuzaka (L), Brad Bergesen (R) - AP Photos

Despite a quality start from John Lackey, the Boston Red Sox bullpen couldn’t make it hold up last night. Tonight, the Red Sox look to pick up a win against the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in the second game of a three-game set.

Tonight’s game will start at 7:05 p.m. and will be shown on NESN in the Red Sox television market. The game can be seen in the Orioles television market on MASN. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2010 Red Sox radio network.

Daisuke Matsuzaka returns to the rotation after missing the month of April with a stiff neck suffered during spring training. Matsuzaka made three rehab starts with the Pawtucket Red Sox and was 2-0 with a 1.62 ERA. He made one start against the O’s in 2009, picking up the win after allowing three runs in 5 1/3 innings.  Dice-K has made six career starts against the Orioles and is 3-1 with a 4.78 ERA. He’s made four career starts at Camden Yards and is 2-1 with a 6.30 ERA.

Brad Bergesen makes the start for the Orioles after being called up from Triple-A Norfolk. Bergesen was sent there on April 19th after making three starts for the Orioles in which he was 0-2 with a 12.19 ERA. He’s made two career starts against the Red Sox and is 0-1 with a 2.57 ERA.
