Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 6/5

Jon Lester (L), Jeremy Guthrie (R) - AP Photos

After Clay Buchholz dominated the Baltimore Orioles last night, the Boston Red Sox will hope for more of the same in game two-of-three at Camden Yards.

Tonight’s game will start at 7:05 p.m. and will be shown on NESN in the Red Sox television market. The game will be shown on MASN in the Orioles television market. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2010 Red Sox radio network.

Coming off of being named AL Pitcher of the Month for May, Jon Lester looks to keep rolling in his 12th start of 2010. In his previous 11 starts, he is 6-2 with a 2.97 ERA. Lester has owned the Orioles over his career as he is 10-0 with a 2.22 ERA. In his one start this season back on April 23rd, he took a no decision after allowing no runs in 5 2/3 innings. In six starts at Camden Yards, Lester is 4-0 with a 2.13 ERA.

In 11 starts this season for the Orioles,  Jeremy Guthrie is 3-5 with a 3.86 ERA. He hasn’t had much success against the Red Sox in his career as he is 1-5 with a 4.73 in 12 starts. Five of those 12 starts have been quality starts.

Breaking News: Reddick Called Up

Boston Red Sox breaking news

With Jeremy Hermida hurting himself in a collision with Adrian Beltre last night, the Boston Red Sox are a little short on outfielders right now. And with Hermida out of the lineup on Saturday, the Red Sox have called up Josh Reddick from Triple-A Pawtucket. Reddick is in the starting lineup in center field.

To make room on the roster for Reddick, the Red Sox have optioned reliever Scott Atchison to Pawtucket.

This will be the second stint for Reddick with the Red Sox this season. In his brief three-game callup in late April, Reddick hit .167 (1-for-6) with two RBIs. In 30 big league games, Reddick is hitting .169 with two home runs and four RBIs.

In 48 games with the PawSox this season, Reddick was hitting .191 with six home runs and 26 RBIs.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 6/5

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Clay Buchholz delivers to a Baltimore Orioles batter during the eighth inning of a baseball game, Friday, June 4, 2010, in Baltimore. The Red Sox won 11-0 - AP Photo

Young Clay Buchholz continues to grow up and mature in front of the Boston Red Sox and all of Red Sox Nation as last night he dominated the Baltimore Orioles in an 11-0 win.

Sure the offense behind Kevin Youkilis and Adrian Beltre, who both hit home runs, gave Buchholz the run support he needed. But it probably wouldn’t have mattered as he needed just 101 pitches in a complete game effort. The win for Buchholz was his 8th of the season, a mark that ties him with Tampa Bay Rays young lefty David Price for most in the American League.

Buchholz has come full circle in just a short time. He’s gone from a young, immature pitcher who threw a no-hitter in just his second MLB start, against the Orioles, to a still relatively young more pitcher who’s been the most consistent Red Sox best pitcher all season long.

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Clay Buchholz (11) is hugged by catcher Victor Martinez after the Red Sox defeated the Baltimore Orioles 11-0 during a baseball game, Friday, June 4, 2010, in Baltimore - AP PhotoLast year after being sent back to the minor leagues, he went down there and dominated. And around this time last year, he asked either to be traded or given a shot in the Red Sox rotation. Eventually that chance came and he’s never looked back.

He came into this season as one of six starters in spring training and he might have thought here we go again. But instead, he left Ft. Myers penciled in as the fifth starter with Daisuke Matsuzaka starting the season on the disabled list. And when Dice-K came back from the disabled list, he was the starter holding the Red Sox together and retained his rotation spot.

Like he’s been doing all season long, Buchholz was dominant against the Orioles last night. He mixed in all of his pitches and had great command of them all. He was very efficient as he had two six pitch innings and when he did get in trouble, he continued to execute his pitches and let his defense do the work.

The Red Sox have showed their faith in young Clay and he’s rewarded them very nicely. As Buchholz continues to mature as pitcher, his future only gets brighter.

We’ll be back later with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups, news and links from the day but for now enjoy the overnight links after the jump.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 6/4

Boston Red Sox's Victor Martinez, left, is out at home while attempting to score on a double hit by Red Sox's Kevin Youkilis as Oakland Athletics' catcher Kurt Suzuki, right, makes the play in the third inning of a baseball game at Boston's Fenway Park, Thursday, June 3, 2010. (AP Photo/Steven Senne)

It’s not too often that a team like the Boston Red Sox belts out 18 hits and loses. But that’s exactly what happened in yesterday’s 9-8 loss to the Oakland Athletics yesterday. Yes the Red Sox took 2-of-3 from the A’s but yesterday’s result may have been different which leads to me to the following question.

Who went ahead made Tim Bogar a combination of Wendell Kim and Dale Svuem?

Bogar is in his first year of coaching third base for the Red Sox and at times he’s made some good decisions and other times, he’s made some bad decisions. During two different points of the game yesterday, Bogar made two bad decisions.

The first one happened in the 3rd inning.

Victor Martinez, who by the way is still hobbled by a bad toe, led off the inning with a single. Kevin Youkilis followed that with a shot off the Green Monster and instead of holding up VMart at third, Bogar sent him and he was gunned down at the plate. And oh by the way, the red-hot Adrian Beltre was on deck.

The second time Bogar screwed up came just an inning later.

Darnell McDonald led off with a single and then on a pick-off attempt banged his knee on the ground. He stayed in the game and would go to second on a Bill Hall single. Jeremy Hermida followed that with a single to right and yes you guessed it, Bogar sent the hobbled McDonald home. McDonald was thrown out at the plate by a great throw from Gabe Gross in right field. I’ve seen Gross play in the minors and I don’t remember too many people running on him.

Here’s the video of said plays:

{flowplayer}http://ianbethune.com/blogar.flv{/flowplayer}

While I’m not going to say those two runs cost the Red Sox the game because it would have made it 10-9, what I will say is it did cost the Red Sox the game because it could have changed the momentum of the game. Runners on second and third with no outs is a lot better than a runner on third and no outs. The same goes with having the bases loaded with no outs.

Instead of heading out on a seven-game road trip with a five-game winning streak, the Red Sox now head to Baltimore winners of four of their last five games. That’s still pretty good in my book. And lest us not forget that the Red Sox were swept the last time they were in Baltimore.

We’ll be back later today with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups, links and news of the day but for now enjoy the plethora of overnight links.

BOSTON (June 3, 2010) – Boston Red Sox All-Star pitcher Josh Beckett will throw strikes of a different kind on July 29, when he hangs up his cleats and ties on a pair of bowling shoes at the fourth-annual Beckett Bowl presented by Foxwoods Resort Casino, a star-studded bowling tournament held at Lucky Strike Lanes in Boston.

The fun-filled evening will begin at 6:00 p.m. with a celebrity red-carpet event. The celebrity bowling tournament will kick-off at 7:15 p.m. and festivities will conclude with a concert by country music sensation Jason Aldean at the Absolut Beckett Bowl Concert presented by MGM Grand at Foxwoods at the House of Blues Boston.

A limited number of tickets for both the bowling tournament and after party concert will be on sale through www.ticketmaster.com this Saturday, June 5th at 10 am. Tickets to attend the bowling event and concert are $250 and tickets for the concert only are $40. Fans can purchase a VIP concert ticket for $125 which includes a meet & greet with Jason Aldean and a reserved seat at the House of Blues.

“We’re overwhelmed by the support we’ve received from the local sports and business communities over the last three years and especially thrilled to have Foxwoods Resort Casino and MGM Grand at Foxwoods as our presenting sponsor and the return of Absolut as our title sponsor for the concert,” said Beckett. “As a result of our collective efforts, we are fortunate enough to raise funds that make a positive impact on the lives of kids served by Children’s Hospital Boston. I’m thrilled to be back for another Beckett Bowl to rally around these deserving children and make an even greater impact in the community.”

Local companies and individuals are invited to sponsor four-person bowling teams for the event. Each team will be joined by a celebrity teammate and compete for unique prize packages. For information on sponsoring a team, companies and individuals can call 617-338-2766 or visit www.beckettbowl.com.

The all-star lineup of celebrities participating in the 2010 Beckett Bowl includes current and past Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, Boston Celtics, Boston Bruins, and New England Revolution players, along with actors, comedians, musicians and celebrity chefs with New England ties.

“We’re honored to support this year’s Beckett Bowl and are excited to have our brand associated with a Boston sports hero like Josh and his foundation,” said Chief Marketing Officer for Mashantucket Pequot Gaming Enterprises Robert Victoria. “As a proud supporter of the Boston Red Sox and Red Sox Nation, we’re thrilled to be a part of a great event that has such a profound impact on communities across New England.”

The annual fundraising event is organized by The Josh Beckett Foundation, which supports community-based programs that improve the health and well-being of children, especially those who are seriously ill, disabled, poor or otherwise disadvantaged. Since its inception in 2007, Beckett Bowl has raised more than $750,000 to benefit the Foundation and the event’s primary beneficiary, Children’s Hospital Boston. Monies from these efforts facilitated the opening of The Josh Beckett Cancer Treatment room at Children’s Hospital Boston in 2009.

“Children’s has taken the lead in radically improving survival rates for pediatric cancer through cutting-edge research and exceptional inpatient care,” said Children’s Hospital Boston CEO James Mandell, MD. “Gifts from generous individuals like Josh will provide us with the opportunity to continue our work to save kids’ lives.”

The Josh Beckett Foundation is also hosting the Beckett Bowl Ultimate Raffle in partnership with the Red Sox Foundation, with proceeds benefitting both organizations. Fans have a chance to win 19 different items by purchasing raffle tickets for only $5 each (no minimum purchase). The one-of-a-kind grand prize includes two tickets to Beckett Bowl presented by Foxwoods Resort Casino and the Absolut Beckett Bowl Concert presented by MGM Grand at Foxwoods, featuring Jason Aldean. The winner and a guest will also have the exclusive chance to watch a future Red Sox game against the New York Yankees from Beckett’s personal seats at Fenway. Fans can purchase raffle tickets for the Beckett Bowl Ultimate Raffle for only $5 at www.redsox.com/beckett.

After selling more than three million copies of his first three albums, topping the charts with eight smash hits including “The Truth,” “Big Green Tractor,” “She’s Country,” “Why,” and “Hicktown,” racking up award nominations and selling out arenas across the nation, 2010 Beckett Bowl Concert presented by MGM Grand at Foxwoods performer country rocker Jason Aldean is running full throttle into summer. He has taken a break from his hugely successful WIDE OPEN tour to join superstar duo Brooks & Dunn’s LAST RODEO tour through mid-June. His latest single, “Crazy Town,” from his platinum-selling third Album WIDE OPEN is in the Top 5 on the country charts.

Past Beckett Bowls have attracted some of Boston’s top professional athletes and celebrities, including Beckett’s Red Sox teammates Jacoby Ellsbury, Jonathan Papelbon, Kevin Youkilis, Jon Lester, David Ortiz, Jason Varitek, Clay Buchholz, Tim Wakefield and Mike Lowell; HBO’s Entourage star Adrian Grenier; performer Darryl “DMC” McDaniels of legendary hip-hop trio Run DMC; country music star Pat Green; Boston Celtics 2008 Finals MVP Paul Pierce and teammate Glen “Big Baby” Davis; Boston Bruins Patrice Bergeron and Milan Lucic; New England Patriots Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Adalius Thomas and Steve Gostkowski; New England Revolution stars Matt Reis and Taylor Twellman; and many more.

About The Josh Beckett Foundation
The Josh Beckett Foundation is a charitable organization established in 2007 by Boston Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett to support community-based programs that strive to improve the health and well-being of children, especially children that are seriously ill, disabled, poor, or otherwise disadvantaged. The Foundation provides Beckett with an opportunity to have a direct and permanent impact on the lives of children throughout New England.

In 2009, Children’s Hospital Boston unveiled the Josh Beckett Cancer Treatment Room which features Boston Red Sox imagery including Beckett and his teammates, crowd scenes and the historic Fenway Park sign.
