Evening Red Sox Delight – 6/23

John Lackey (L), Ubaldo Jimenez (R)

After the Colorado Rockies stopped the Boston Red Sox six-game winning streak last night, the Red Sox will look to get back on track tonight in the second game of a three-game set at Coors Field.

Tonight’s game will start at 8:40 p.m. and will be shown on NESN in the Red Sox television market. The game will be shown on FOX Sports Net Rocky Mountain in the Rockies television market. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2010 Red Sox radio network.

John Lackey has made 14 starts for Terry Francona and the Red Sox this season. In those starts, he is 8-3 with a 4.53 ERA. He’s faced the Rockies once in his career as a member of the Angels. In that start back in 2006 in Anaheim, he picked up the win after allowing three runs over eight innings.

The probable starter in the 2010 MLB All-Star Game for the National League is tonight’s Rockies starter Ubaldo Jimenez. He has dominated everyone in his 14 starts with a 13-1 record with a 1.15 ERA. He has never faced the Red Sox during the regular season in his career but did face them in the 2007 World Series. He took the loss in Game 2.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 6/23

Now that the USA has advanced on to the second round of the World Cup thanks to a very late Landon Donovan goal, we could move forward to the business at hand involving the Boston Red Sox.

Jon Lester #31 of the Boston Red Sox waits to bat against the Colorado Rockies during the game at Coors Field on June 22, 2010 in Denver, Colorado - Getty ImagesWe sort of expected tonight’s game with Ubaldo Jimenez pitching for the Colorado Rockies to be the low scoring game of the series but it happened last night when Jon Lester and Jhoulys Chacin squared off on the bump at Coors Field.

Chacin looked virtually unhittable for the first two innings but ran into some trouble in the third when the Red Sox loaded the bases up. But they could not push a run across against him in that inning or for his 6 2/3 innings. The Red Sox only managed four hits against him and couldn’t take advantage of the five walks Chacin issued.

The Red Sox had another chance in the 7th with the bases loaded but pinch-hitter David Ortiz grounded out. The man he pinch-hit for by the way was Lester.

Lester matched Chacin with zeroes through the first four innings but the Rockies broke through against him in the 5th for a run. Lester ended up being a victim of the National League rules because he was pinch-hit for by Big Papi. Had they been in Boston or if interleague rules allowed the DH, Lester would have probably gone out to pitch the 7th since he had thrown only 90 pitches through the first six innings.

While the Red Sox did rally for a run in the 9th, it wasn’t enough since the Rockies added an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th on a sure fire double play ball that took a bad hop over the head of Marco Scutaro.

Instead the Red Sox saw their six game winning streak snapped and find themselves in a virtual tie for second still with the Tampa Bay Rays. Both teams are 1.5 games behind the Yankees for first place. The Red Sox are also still second in the majors with 43 wins.

Josh Reddick did find himself back in the big leagues and in the starting lineup as it’s now thought J.D. Drew will be out until at least Thursday’s game. At least that’s what the Red Sox are hoping as they’ll have to make a roster move with Daisuke Matsuzaka coming off the disabled list to start. Robert Manuel, who didn’t see action while in Boston, was sent back to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Josh Beckett is also progressing in his rehab and will throw another side session tomorrow. He threw a total of 42 pitches, all fastballs, in yesterday’s side session. It still appears though Beckett is at least two weeks away from going on a rehab assignment.

Let’s hope that John Lackey is on top of his game tonight as runs should be hard to come by against Jimenez, who did leave the ballpark early yesterday do to sickness. It still should be a great game tonight either way. Let’s hope the Red Sox can come out on top.

We’ll be back later with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups, news and any links but for now enjoy the overnight links.

Sporting News 2010 Preseason All-American Teams

Sporting News Yearbook Cover NortheastST. LOUIS – University of Connecticut senior linebacker Lawrence Wilson (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) and senior offensive guard Zach Hurd have both been named preseason All-American by the Sporting News. Both players were selected to the third team.

Wilson was a first team All-BIG EAST Conference pick in 2010 and led the Huskies in tackles with 140. He also had five sacks and 11 tackles for a loss. Wilson was first in the BIG EAST in tackles per game with 10.8 – which was also tenth nationally. On Monday, he was named to the watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, which is awarded annually to the nation’s best defensive player.

Hurd was a first-team All-BIG EAST pick last year as he started all 13 games at left guard. Hurd has made 26 starts in a row for UConn dating back to the beginning of the 2008 season. Hurd will serve as one of UConn’s four captains in 2010. On Monday, Hurd was named to the Outland Trophy Watch List, presented annually to college football’s best interior lineman, on either offense or defense.

Connecticut opens the season at Michigan on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 3:30 p.m. The game will be televised by ABC.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 6/22

Boston Red Sox players, foreground from left, Darnell McDonald, Daniel Nava and Dustin Pedroia celebrate their 2-0 win after the ninth inning of a baseball game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Sunday, June 20, 2010, in Boston - AP Photo

The Boston Red Sox are heading back to the scene where they clinched their 2007 World Series title as they prepare to take on the Colorado Rockies in a three-game set. For the guys who were on the team in 2007, it’s a chance to remember the good times. But for the 2010 team, it’s a chance to keep the good baseball going.

The Red Sox are coming off of an 8-1 homestand which saw them take 2-of-3 from the Philadelphia Phillies and sweeps of two NL West foes in the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Los Angeles Dodgers. They’ve been scoring a ton of runs and also have gotten some great starting pitching. Now they’ll look to continue that success against the Colorado Rockies.

Two of those starters providing the most excellent pitching could find themselves in Anaheim for the 2010 MLB All-Star Game. Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz are definitely worthy of All-Star consideration when it comes time for the players and Yankees skipper Joe Girardi to make their decisions.

With the way the voting is going, it’s going to take an executive order from President Barack Obama to have any Red Sox starters in the All-Star Game. Unfortunately, President Obama is a Chicago White Sox fan so that’s not going to happen.

The only thing that can be done right now is for us as Red Sox fans to keep voting and voting as many times as we want. Otherwise we’ll have to rely on the players and Girardi to get guys like Dustin Pedroia, Adrian Beltre, Victor Martinez and David Ortiz into the game.

Speaking of All-Stars, the Red Sox will definitely have their hands full on Wednesday night when Rockies starter Ubaldo Jimenez takes the mound. Jimenez has been dominating the National League as he’s made fourteen starts and boasts a record of 13-1 with a 1.15 ERA. Of course if your just a casual baseball fan, you’ve probably never heard of him since the Rockies aren’t exactly a national team right now.

But trust me after Wednesday night, you’ll know who he is. Let’s just hope the Red Sox can break through against him.
