Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 7/25

Daisuke Matszuaka (L), Doug Fister (R)

This afternoon, the Boston Red Sox will look to avoid a split in the finale of a four-game set against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field.

This afternoon’s game will start at 4:10 p.m. and will be shown on NESN in the Red Sox television market. The game can be seen in the Mariners television market on Fox Sports Northwest. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2010 Red Sox radio network.

Daisuke Matsuzaka looks to string another good start together for Terry Francona and the Red Sox. In his 13 starts in 2010, he is 7-3 with a 4.29 ERA. He has made six career starts against the Mariners and is 2-1 with a 3.99 ERA. Matuzaka has had good success at Safeco Field in four starts as he is 2-0 with a 2.39 ERA.

Doug Fister will make his 16th start of the season for the Mariners. In his previous 15 starts, he is 3-6 with a 3.56 ERA. He’s never faced the Red Sox in his 26 career MLB appearances.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 7/23

If you watched last night’s Boston Red Sox versus Seattle Mariners game at Safeco Field, you probably felt like you were at Six Flags of New England riding the Batman – The Dark Knight roller coaster.

Starting pitcher John Lackey(notes) #40 of the Boston Red Sox pitches against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field on July 22, 2010 in Seattle, Washington. Lackey took a no-hitter into the eighth inning. (Photo by Otto Greule Jr/Getty Images)Your emotions went up as you watched John Lackey try to complete a no-hitter. Then they went down when you saw Josh Bard’s two-out single in the 8th break up said no-no. Then back up again as you realized the Red Sox were holding a 6-1 lead and had Manny Delcarmen, who was perfect since returning from the DL, coming into the game.

Your emotions went back down again as you watched MDC and Jonathan Papelbon implode as they allowed five runs in the bottom of the 9th to allow the Mariners to come back and tie the game and force yet another day of bonus baseball from the west coast. And finally if you made it to the end of the game, you were on that high of finishing the roller coaster ride as the Red Sox scored two runs in the 13th to beat the Mariners 8-6 after a perfect bottom half of the inning from Ramon Ramirez.

Honestly, I really don’t feel like talking about what happened in the 9th. It was ugly, plain and simple. But we should talk about Lackey’s performance.

Lackey finally looked like the pitcher the Red Sox made a five-year investment in. He attacked the strike zone and made his pitches count. The only run he allowed came on a walk, stolen base and a passed ball.

More importantly for Lackey though, it was his second straight good start and with Clay Buchholz and Josh Beckett back plus Daisuke Matsuzaka finding his form (no need to mention Jon Lester here since we all know he’s the ace), the Red Sox starting pitching seems to be in good shape.

Now if the bullpen could just help them out, things would be a lot better.

For more slices of Red Sox goodness, head over to the Boston Globe, Boston Herald, ESPN Boston, NESN, Providence Journal and WEEI websites.

And if you must read the enemy papers, you can check out the Seattle Times, Everett Herald and Tacoma News Tribune websites.

Evening Red Sox Delight – 7/22

John Lackey (L), Ryan Rowland-Smith (R)

After a tough start to the 10-game road trip in Oakland, the Boston Red Sox look to get back on track in the first of four against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field in Seattle.

Tonight’s game will start at 10:10 p.m. and will be shown on NESN in the Red Sox television market. The game can be seen in the Mariners television market on Fox Sports Northwest. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2010 Red Sox radio network.

John Lackey looks to string together a good outing against his former AL West rivals in his 20th start of the season. In his previous 19 starts, he is 9-5 with a 4.65 ERA. He’s made 25 career starts against the Mariners and is 12-9 with a 3.89 ERA. Lackey has made 14 career starts and is 8-5 with a 3.03 ERA.

Australian Ryan Rowland-Smith makes his 21st appearance (18 starts) tonight against the Red Sox. On the season, he is 1-9 with a 6.18 ERA. He’ll be making his first career start against the Red Sox but he has made seven career appearances against them. In those seven appearances, he has no record with a 2.70 ERA (2 ER/6.2 IP). UConn Women’s Basketball 2010 Exhibitions Set

UConn Huskies women's basketball national champsAccording to John Altavilla of the Hartford Courant, the two-time defending NCAA women’s basketball champions, the UConn Huskies, will take on the Franklin Pierce Ravens and the Indiana University (PA) Crimson Hawks. No word on who they’ll be playing at Gampel or the XL Center as in the past they’ve played one exhibition game at each venue.

Franklin Pierce is coming off a 32-2 season that saw them lose in the Division II Final Four to the Fort Lewis Skyhawks. IUP finished up their 2009-10 season at 17-10.
