Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 8/10

Daisuke Matsuzaka (L), Ricky Romero (R)

After a split with their bitter rivals the New York Yankees, the Boston Red Sox head north of the border to take on the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre in the first game of a three-game set tonight. The Red Sox are 7-2 this year against the Jays, including a 5-1 mark at Rogers Centre.

This evening’s game will start at 7:07 p.m. and will be shown on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Blue Jays television market, you can watch the game on Rogers SportsNet. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2010 Red Sox radio network.

Daisuke Matsuzaka has picked up three wins and dropped his ERA almost a full run since his last start against the Blue Jays on July 11th. He has faced the Jays twice this season and is 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA. He’s made nine career starts against them and is 6-1 with a 3.45 ERA. Dice-K has made five career starts at Rogers Centre and is 3-1 with a 2.81 ERA. Overall in 2010, Matsuzaka has made 16 starts and is 8-3 with a 3.79 ERA.

Ricky Romero will make his 23rd start of 2010 for Cito Gaston and the Jays. In his previous 22 starts, he is 9-7 with a 3.37 ERA. He’s made one start against the Red Sox in 2010 and it was the shortest of his career back on July 9th. In that start, he allowed five runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings in a 14-3 win by the Red Sox. He’s struggled in his career against the Red Sox as he is 1-4 with a 8.76 ERA in six starts.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 8/10

Newsday and Boston Herald sports covers for Tuesday, August 10, 2010

Jon Lester came into yesterday’s game having lost a career-high four straight starts. A win from him would also keep his Boston Red Sox in the playoff hunt with yesterday’s opponent the New York Yankees as well as the Tampa Bay Rays.

Things worked out well for Lester and the Red Sox yesterday afternoon at Yankee Stadium as he was able to regain his form and shutdown the Yankees for 6 1/3 innings to pick up his 12th win of the 2010 campaign. In fact, Lester had a no-hitter going through the first 4 1/3 innings until one of the newest Yankees Austin Kearns broke it up with a single.

Lester had good command of his fastball as well as his secondary pitches and Victor Martinez did a great job of mixing them all in. Lester did run into some trouble in the 7th though and had to be bailed out by Daniel Bard.

Hip hip Jorge Posada led off with a single and went to third on a Marcus Thames double. Lester then plunked Kearns to load up the bases but rebounded with a strikeout of Curtis Granderson. He gave way to Bard who came in and struck out Derek Jeter and Nick Swisher to end the threat.

Bard found himself in a need a of a bailout as well as Jonathan Papelbon picked him up in the bottom of the 8th.

Mark Teixeira hit a bomb to right to cut the Red Sox lead to 2-1 to start the inning. Alex Rodriguez followed with a single and was replaced by Brett Gardner who went to second on a Robinson Cano groundout. Bard then walked Posada but got pinch-hitter Lance Berkman to fly out. Paps then came in and retired Kearns on one pitch.

The stolen base helped the Red Sox to their two runs in the second inning.

After a Mike Lowell flyout against Phil Hughes, rookie Ryan Kalish singled and then stole second. He ended up at third base on a throwing error by Posada and quickly came into score on a Bill Hall single. Jacoby Ellsbury finally broke his 0-for-16 return from the disabled list with a single that moved Hall to third.

Ellsbury stole second and Hughes walked Marco Scutaro to load up the bases. J.D. Drew grounded out but Hall scored to make it 2-0.

It wasn’t the series result the Red Sox wanted with a split of the four-game set with the Yankees but it still kept their postseason hopes alive. They find themselves still trailing the Yankees by six game for first place and the Rays by 4.5 games for second place and the AL Wild Card standings.

The Red Sox do need to keep an eye on what the Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins are doing. Both teams are tied for first in the AL Central and trail the Red Sox by a ½ game in the Wild Card standings.

They now head north of the border to take on a Toronto Blue Jays team that they are 7-2 against this season including a 5-1 record at Rogers Centre. Daisuke Matsuzaka will take the hill for the Red Sox and he’ll be opposed by Ricky Romero.

We’ll be back later with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitchers matchups, any news and links for the day but for now enjoy the overnight links after the jump.

Late Morning Red Sox Delight – 8/9

Jon Lester (L), Phil Hughes (R)

After losing the last two games and seeing their season slowly starting to slip away, the Boston Red Sox will look to get back on track and salvage a split of their four-game set with the New York Yankees this afternoon at Yankee Stadium.

This afternoon’s game will start at 2:05 p.m. and will be shown on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Yankees television market, you can watch the game on YES. And if you don’t live in either market, you’re in luck as well as the MLB Network will be broadcasting the game as well. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2010 Red Sox radio network.

The last time 2010 All-Star Jon Lester pitched at Yankee Stadium was in late September of 2009 and he was hit by a line drive off the bat of Melky Cabrera on his knee. Today, he’ll make his 23rd start of 2010 and look to end a four-game losing streak. In his previous 22 starts, he is 11-7 with a 3.07 ERA. He’s faced the Yankees twice this season and is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA. In 10 career starts against the Yankees, Lester is 4-1 with a 4.01 ERA. He’s made five career starts against the Yankees in New York and is 2-1 with a 2.81 ERA.

2010 All-Star Phil Hughes steps in for Dustin Moseley who had to take the start of an injured A.J. Burnett last night. Hughes has made 20 starts this season and is 13-4 with a 3.96 ERA. He has made two starts in 2010 against the Red Sox and is 1-0 with a 5.25 ERA. He’s made 10 career apperances (four starts) against the Red Sox and is 1-2 with a 6.48 ERA.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 8/9

Boston Herald, NY Daily News, NY Post, Newsday sports covers for Monday, August 9, 2010

The Boston Red Sox came into Sunday night’s nationally televised game expecting a pitching of matchup of two former Florida Marlins in Josh Beckett and A.J. Burnett. Instead, they found a former member of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in Dustin Moseley, who was scheduled to start today, on the mound for the New York Yankees.

The Red Sox could do nothing against Moseley and it didn’t help that their defense failed them while Beckett wasn’t exactly at the top of his game in a 7-2 loss. It was the second straight game the Red Sox failed to pick up any ground on the two teams they trail in the AL East and the AL Wild Card standings.

I guess the one positive is that while they didn’t gain any ground on the Tampa Bay Rays, they didn’t lose any ground either as the Rays were almost no-hit for a third time this season and lost 1-0 to the Toronto Blue Jays. But when you have a chance like they’ve had the past two nights, they really need to take advantage of it.

The last time Beckett took the Yankee Stadium mound it was raining and he ended up leaving after hurting his back. And in his first three outings since returning from the disabled list, he hadn’t exactly faced a top-notch offense (Mariners, Angels, Indians).

The Yankees were able to carve out two runs in the second on four hits. He did settle down though as he had an easy time of it in the third and fourth innings. The fifth inning for Beckett though provided the end of his evening.

He allowed a leadoff bomb to Mark Teixeira then he walked Alex Rodriguez and plunked Robinson Cano. He got hip hip Jorge Posada to strike out but Lance Berkman, who’d been struggling since coming over to the Yankees from the Houston Astros, followed that with a double and just like that it was 4-1.

Curtis Granderson then worked a walk and then Kevin Cash tried to pick off Cano at third after a Brett Gardner strikeout only to have his throw hit Cano and go into the outfield allowing Cano to score. The Yankees captain Derek Jeter ended the miserable night of Beckett with a 2-run double to make it 7-1.

The Red Sox had their chances to cut into the lead but were never really able to take advantage last night. Now they find themselves in a precarious position of having to win the game this afternoon or start to face the reality their postseason dreams may be coming to an end.

I still have hope though that the Red Sox can string together a nice run and get back in it. But to do that, they’ll have to start this afternoon behind Jon Lester on the mound.

We’ll be back in a short while with today’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups, any news and links from the day but for now enjoy the overnight links.

Evening Red Sox Delight – 8/8

Josh Beckett (L), Dustin Moseley (R)

With a chance to gain some ground in the AL East and AL Wild Card tonight, the Boston Red Sox will look to take game three of a four-game set against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

This evening’s game will start at 8:05 p.m. and will be shown nationally on ESPN. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2010 Red Sox radio network

Josh Beckett returns to the scene of the crime so to speak as his last start at Yankee Stadium this year ended up putting him on the disabled list with the back problems. He has pitched well since returning from the DL and has made 11 starts this season and is 3-1 with a 5.70 ERA. He’s made three starts against the Yankees in 2010 and is 0-1 with a 10.43 ERA. He’s made 20 career starts against the Yanks and is 9-6 with a 5.95 ERA. He’s made 9 career starts in New York and is 5-2 with a 4.78 ERA.

Tomorrow night’s starter Dustin Moseley steps in tonight for A.J. Burnett who was scratched with back spasms. Moseley has made six appearances and two starts since being called up from the minors on July 2nd. In those six appearances, Moseley is 1-1 with a 4.13 ERA. He’s had three appearances (two starts) against the Red Sox in his career as a member of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. In those three appearances, he is 1-0 with a 5.84 ERA.
