Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 5/13

Clay Buchholz (L), Bartolo Colon (R)

After an off day on Thursday, the Boston Red Sox return to the field in their quest to get back to .500 with a three-game set against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium this weekend.

Tonight’s first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and you can watch the game on NESN in the Red Sox television market. YES will have the coverage for you in the Yankees television market. And if you don’t live in either market, you’re in luck as well as the MLB Network will have coverage of the game. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Clay Buchholz looks to get the Red Sox back on track in his eighth start of 2011. In his previous seven starts, Buchholz is 3-3 with a 4.19 ERA. He’s faced the Yankees once this season, taking the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) in 3.2 innings back on 4/9.  He’s made six career starts against the Yankees and is 1-3 with a 6.25 ERA. Three of those starts have come in the Bronx where he is 1-1 with a 6.35 ERA.

Bartolo Colon will make his first start against the Red Sox since he was a member of the Angels in 2005. He’s made seven appearances (four starts) for the Yankees in 2011 and is 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA. He’s faced the Red Sox once this season when he took the loss back on 4/8 after allowing three runs (one earned) in 4.1 innings out of the bullpen. He’s had 23 career appearances (22 starts) against the Red Sox and is 8-10 with a 4.13 ERA.

Red Sox News & Notes – 5/13

Carl Crawford(notes) #13 of the Boston Red Sox hits a triple as Drew Butera(notes) #41 of the Minnesota Twins catches on May 8, 2011 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. The Minnesota Twins and the Boston Red Sox wore pink and used pink bats in honor of Mother's Day and Breast Cancer Awareness.

Every time the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees get together, it’s always a big deal. The games are usually on national television as evidenced by being on the MLB Network tonight, FOX tomorrow and ESPN Sunday Night Baseball.

When the two teams met up back in April, the Red Sox were 0-6. The Red Sox would take 2-of-3 games from the Yankees which happened to be their first two wins of the season. Now five weeks later, the Red Sox find themselves five games behind the first place Tampa Bay Rays and four games behind the second place Yankees.

Both teams are coming in off of two straight losses. Of course the two straight losses for the Red Sox came after getting to within a game of .500 on the season. The first time the Red Sox got to within a game of .500 they lost two straight. The second time they got to within a game of .500 they lost three straight.

So you can see this is an important series.

Say the Red Sox get swept. They would find themselves seven games behind the Yankees at the very least. But a sweep for the Red Sox would be a different story. For one, it would get them to within a game of the Yankees. But more importantly, it would get them back to what has been the elusive .500 mark on the season.

The Red Sox have the right pitchers going this weekend in Clay Buchholz, Josh Beckett and Jon Lester although Buchholz hasn’t been at his best yet. They have Carl Crawford swinging a hot bat. The same goes for Adrian Gonzalez. The bullpen should be back to normal now with yesterday’s day off meaning everyone will be available.

What the Red Sox need to have happen tonight is for everything to start clicking at once. And what better place to have that happen than on the national stage in the Big Apple.

We’ll be back later with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. But for now, enjoy the overnight links by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Red Sox News & Notes – 5/12

There’s only way to describe my feelings and probably the emotions of others when we watch the 2011 Boston Red Sox right now. Frustration.

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher John Lackey(notes) pitches to the Toronto Blue Jays during the third inning of a baseball game in Toronto on Wednesday, May 11, 2011.And that frustration grows even stronger when John Lackey is out there on the mound. At times, he makes you think that there is something physically wrong but right now it appears more mental/physical in nature.

During spring training, Lackey alluded to the fact that his wife had breast cancer. And judging from this comment, it appears things aren’t going that well.

“Everything (bleeps) in my life right now to be honest with you.”

I’ll admit that I was all over Lackey last night on Twitter. But after reading the comments from Lackey, maybe such criticism isn’t/wasn’t warranted. Baseball players are human too. They have to deal with personal issues just like us.

We’ve seen personal problems affect Red Sox players and other baseball players in the past.

A few years back, J.D. Drew was really struggling. We later learned that his son was going through some medical issues. When things got better for Drew’s son, things changed for him on the playing field.

So maybe instead of us jumping down Lackey’s throat, we should send him good wishes toward’s his wife’s recovery in her fight against breast cancer. It’s the right and only thing to do at this time.

As for the game last night, not much too talk about.

Adrian Gonzalez continued his hot streak with another opposite field home run. Carl Crawford extended his hitting streak while Jacoby Ellsbury saw his end.

We’ll be back later with the pitching matchups for the weekend tilt with the New York Yankees. But for now, enjoy the overnight links by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 5/11

John Lackey (L), Jesse Litsch (R)

Before heading into a much needed day off, The Boston Red Sox will look to escape Canada with a win tonight as they take on the Toronto Blue Jays in the finale of a brief two-game set at Rogers Centre.

Tonight’s first pitch is scheduled for 7:07 p.m. and you can catch the game on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Blue Jays television market you can watch the game on Rogers SportsNet. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

John Lackey looks to rebound from what was probably his worst in a Red Sox uniform his last time out. Lackey has made six starts in 2011 and is 2-4 with a 7.16 ERA. He has not faced the Blue Jays this season and was 1-2 with an 8.61 ERA in four starts against them last year. Lackey has made 15 career starts against the Jays and is 4-5 with a 4.58 ERA. Ten of those starts have come in Toronto where he is 3-3 with a 3.82 ERA.

Jesse Litsch will make his seventh start of the season for skipper John Farrell. In his previous six starts, Litsch is 3-2 with a 4.04 ERA. He has made one start against the Red Sox in 2011, taking the loss back on 4/17 when he allowed six runs (four earned) in five innings of work.  Litsch has made eight career starts against the Red Sox and is 4-3 with a 4.11 ERA.

Red Sox News & Notes – 5/11

Jarrod Saltalamacchia(notes) #39 calms down Jon Lester(notes) #31 of the Boston Red Sox during MLB action at the Rogers Centre May 10, 2011 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

A .500 record in baseball is usually a sign of mediocrity. Right now, the Boston Red Sox can’t even get to .500. And before you jump down my throat, the Red Sox are from a mediocre team.

There’s many different reasons why the Red Sox can’t get to .500. One of them is the fact that things haven’t fired on all cylinders at once.

That was on display Tuesday night in Toronto, as the Red Sox offense pounded out 16 hits but still fell to the Toronto Blue Jays 7-6 in 10 innings.

The problem last night was a rare, ineffective start from Jon Lester.

Lester had put his normal April struggles to pasture this year and has been one of, it not the best starting pitcher for the Red Sox this season (Josh Beckett being the other). But a tight strike zone, no command on his fastball and terrible location on his curveball led to a bad outing.

The tight strike zone came into play in the bottom of the 1st inning when Lester lost his focus and the Red Sox fell behind 3-0. The offense would get the Red Sox back in the lead on a Carl Crawford RBI single, David Ortiz solo home run and the first of two Adrian Gonzalez homers on the night.

But Lester would give the lead back after allowing a tying home run to J. P. Arencibia and the go-ahead run at the time off the bat of Jose Bautista. The Red Sox would get that run back off the bat of Jarrod Saltalamacchia in the top half of the 8th only to see Daniel Bard give up a pinch-hit home run to David Cooper in the bottom half.

The lead didn’t last long though as Adrian Gonzalez hit his second opposite field home run of the night on the first pitch he saw from Jays closer Frank Francisco.

All the Red Sox would get in the 10th inning was a Dustin Pedroia single. The Blue Jays on the other hand got a 1-out single from Rajai Davis, who followed that up with two stolen bases to set the stage for Cooper’s walkoff sacrifice fly against Matt Albers.

After the 2-10 start, the Red Sox battled back to get their record to 10-11 only to lose the next two games. At 11-15, they ran off three straight win to get to 14-15 only to lose the next three games. They closed out the 11-game homestand with three straight wins to get their record back to 17-18 only to fall last night.

This 2011 Red Sox team is a great team on paper  but only a decent team on the field right now. We’ve seen the flashes where all the intrical parts have clicked together and then we’ve seen the team from last night. I still think it really is only a matter of time before this team puts together a solid run and puts the .500 mark in their rearview mirror.

But until the Red Sox can put it all together, the .500 mark can’t be a reality. It’s only a dream right now. Hopefully the trend of losing a few games after getting close to .500 ends tonight with (gulp) John Lackey.

We’ll be back later with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. But for now, enjoy the overnight links by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.
