Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 6/28

Josh Beckett (L), Cliff Lee (R)

After salvaging the finale in Pittsburgh on Sunday, the Boston Red Sox head to the City of Brotherly Love in what is being billed as a potential World Series preview. The Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies will square off tonight in the first of a three-game set at Citizens Bank Park.

Tonight’s first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and you can watch the game on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Phillies television market, you can catch the game on Philadelphia 17. If you don’t live in either market you may be in luck as the MLB Network is scheduled to show the game as well. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

After being scratched before his last start, Josh Beckett returns after the layoff to make his 15th start of 2011. In his previous 14 starts, Beckett is 6-2 with a 1.86 ERA. He didn’t face the Phillies in 2010. Beckett has made 19 career appearances (17 starts) against the Phils and is 8-4 with a 3.98 ERA. He’s made eight appearances (seven starts) in Philly and is 2-3 with a 4.83 ERA. Beckett is 2-1 with a 4.71 ERA in three starts as a member of the Red Sox against the Phillies.

Cliff Lee makes his 17th start of 2011 for the Phillies tonight. In his previous 16 starts, Lee is 8-5 with a 2.87 ERA. He made one start against the Red Sox in 2010 as a member of the Texas Rangers, picking up a no decision after allowing two runs in nine innings of work. He’s made 10 career starts against the Red Sox and is 2-4 with a 4.06 ERA. In 33 innings this month, Lee has allowed just one earned run while going 4-0.

AL All-Star Voting Update – 6/28

2011 MLB All-Star Game logo

With the American League All-Star team voting winding down on Thursday at 11:59 p.m. EST, Boston Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury still finds himself sitting on the outside looking in at a starting spot.

Last week, Ellsbury found himself trailing Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers by 173,000 votes. This week, Ellsbury trails by just 121,000 votes. Injured Red Sox OF Carl Crawford sits in fifth and trails Hamilton by 875,000 votes while J.D. Drew is a distant 10th 1.7 million votes behind.

Adrian Gonzalez has increased his lead over Mark Teixeira by about a million votes and unless something kooky happens, he should be the AL starting first baseman. The same goes for David Ortiz who leads Michael Young by about two million votes for the starting DH position.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia finds himself in fourth at catcher but is 1.2 million votes behind Russell Martin. Dustin Pedroia is still in second at second base but is 1.8 million votes behind Robinson Cano.

Kevin Youkilis sits in third place about a million votes behind Alex Rodriguez at third. And finally, Marco Scutaro remains in fifth at shortstop as he trails Derek Jeter by 2.2 million votes.

I can’t stress enough how important it is for you to vote, especially for Ellsbury. He’s had a heck of a season and deserves to be the starter. So do whatever you can to help him get there.

Since the Red Sox are partnering up with the San Francisco Giants in the NL, be sure to Vote the Ticket! and get our boys to starting positions at the 2011 MLB All-Star Game. Get that vote in by 11:59 p.m. Thursday night.

The 2011 MLB All-Star Teams will be released on Sunday, July 3rd on TBS beginning at 12 p.m.

Maya Moore Wins Second-Straight Honda Broderick Cup

Collegiate Women Sports Awards

Former UConn Huskies women’s basketball All-American Maya Moore has been named the top female collegiate athlete for the second straight year.

Here’s the release from The Collegiate Women Sports Awards:

The Collegiate Women Sports Awards today announced that Maya Moore, University of Connecticut basketball star and current forward for the WNBA Minnesota Lynx, has won the Honda-Broderick Cup, designating her as the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year. Moore’s history-making win is only the second time in all 35 years of the program that an athlete has won the Honda-Broderick Cup twice (swimmer Tracy Caulkins,1982 and ’84), and she is the first-ever back-to-back winner. The announcement was made in the Low Library Rotunda at Columbia University in New York City.

The other two “Top Three” finalists for the 2011 award included distance runner Sheila Reid from Villanova University, a two-time Honda Sports Award winner this year (cross country and track & field) and Blair Brown from Penn State University (volleyball).

Moore was selected as the winner of the Honda-Broderick Cup by a voting of nearly 1,000 NCAA member schools and the Board of Directors of the Collegiate Women Sports Awards Program. Previous winners include: basketball superstar Candace Parker (2008), track and field legend Jackie Joyner-Kersee (1985), soccer great Mia Hamm (1994) and volleyball star Misty May (1999). Last year, Maya shared the award in a rare tie with Penn State volleyball player Megan Hodge.

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Moore was the #1 draft pick for the WNBA this year. She was born in Jefferson City, Missouri, and grew up in Lawrenceville, Georgia. She was a Honda Sports Award nominee in all four years of her college career. Maya led her team to four Final Four appearances, two national titles and a 150-4 record. She is the fourth-leading scorer in NCAA history, with 3,036 points. Honored as the Capital One University Division Academic All-American of the Year and BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2010 and 2011, Moore was also selected as a CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2009. A three-time WBCA Wade Trophy honoree and four-time WBCA State Farm First Team All-American, she won the Naismith Trophy, the Associated Press Player of the Year Award and the USBWA Player of the Year Award in 2009 and 2011. She was also the John R. Wooden Award honoree in 2009 and 2011.

Moore is one of only two players to earn AP First Team All-America status in each of her four years in college. She is the winner of the 2010-11 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award for women’s basketball, was honored as the Most Outstanding Player of the 2010 NCAA Tournament and voted Most Outstanding Player of the Philadelphia Regional (2011), the Dayton Regional (2010) and the Trenton Regional (2009). She was also named BIG EAST Player of the Year in 2008, 2009 and 2011 and the 2009 and 2011 BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Player. Moore finished her college career with 50 double-doubles and registered double-figure points in an NCAA record 149 games.

A student athlete whose academic prowess matches her outstanding achievement on the basketball court, Moore holds a 3.669 GPA in sports media and promotion. She is the winner of the NCAA Elite 88 Award for achieving the highest GPA of all student-athletes competing in the Final Four.

The New York awards ceremony was hosted by ESPN SportsCenter’s Sage Steele and was also attended by former Columbia University swimmer Cristina Teuscher, winner of the 2000 Honda-Broderick Cup and Olympic Gold Medalist.

Jeremy Lamb Makes USA Basketball U-19 Final Roster

After being named a finalist for the 2011 USA Basketball U-19 team last week, UConn Huskies sophomore guard Jeremy Lamb has officially made the team.

Here’s the release from USA Basketball:

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Basketball today announced its official 12-man roster for the USA U19 World Championship Team. The USA squad, featuring five players with prior USA Basketball experience, will look to defend the gold medal won by the U.S. in 2009 at the 2011 FIBA U19 World Championship.

USA BasketballNamed a member of the 2011 USA U19 World Championship Team were: Keith Appling (Michigan State/Detroit, Mich.); James Bell (Villanova/Orlando, Fla.); Anthony Brown (Stanford/Huntington Beach, Calif.); Jahii Carson (Mesa High School/*Arizona State/Phoenix, Ariz.); Tim Hardaway, Jr. (Michigan/Miami, Fla.); Joe Jackson (Memphis/Memphis, Tenn.); Jeremy Lamb (Connecticut/ Norcross, Ga.); Meyers Leonard (Illinois/Robinson, Ill.); Khyle Marshall (Butler/Davie, Fla.); Doug McDermott (Creighton/Ames, Iowa); Tony Mitchell (North Texas/Dallas, Texas); and Patric Young (Florida/Jacksonville, Fla.).

George Mason University mentor Paul Hewitt is head coach of the USA U19 World Championship Team, and is being assisted by collegiate head coaches Randy Bennett of St. Mary’s College and Cliff Warren of Jacksonville University.

“I like the depth and versatility of this team, in particular our big guys. I think our big guys are a great presence around the basket and do an excellent job of screening,” said Hewitt. “Defense will have to be a staple for this team and we have work to do. I’m not happy with where we are defensively. I think we made steps, we’re doing some good things, but in order to compete for the gold medal we have to get better.

“The selection was harder than I expected. The young man we decided not to keep, Javon McCrae, it was really just a numbers situation, he played more than well enough to make the team. We just didn’t feel comfortable going over there without three point guards,” Hewitt stated.

The team will complete its domestic training Thursday at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., and then depart for Europe on June 24. The USA squad will train June 25-28 in Lithuania. The Americans will face the Lithuania U20 National Team in an exhibition game on June 26 in Panevrzys, Lithuania, and then meet the Lithuania U19 National Team on June 28 in Vilnius, Lithuania. The 2011 FIBA U19 World Championship for Men is being held June 30-July 10 in Valmiera, Liepaja and Riga, Latvia.

To continue reading click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

“The exhibition games are very important because they will help get us adjusted to the type environment we’ll be playing in,” said Hewitt about the USA’s two “friendlies” in Lithuania. “The teams we’re going to be playing there are obviously going to be more organized in their approach offensively and defensively, and they’re going to test us. We’re going to have to think. Right now I think we’re doing it a lot on physical ability. I see some cohesiveness coming together but the two exhibition games in Lithuania will definitely test our cohesiveness.

“Even if we win a game, we’ve got to take a approach that it’s like a practice and take a look at the things we didn’t do well and see how we can improve on them. Certainly we need to keep building on our strengths but from game to game we’ve got to get something out of it that we can use to help us get ready for the next game,” added Hewitt.

Five of the finalists possess prior USA Basketball experience including two players from the 2010 USA U18 National Team that captured gold at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship.

Mitchell and Young were part of USA Basketball’s 2010 U18 team, while Leonard and Young participated on the USA Junior National Select Team that won the 2010 Nike Hoop Summit. Red Sox News & Notes – 6/23

Mother Nature tried to do her absolute best to try and erase John Lackey‘s craptastic start for the Boston Red Sox against the San Diego Padres on Wednesday afternoon. But not even she could help out Lackey and the Red Sox as they fell 5-1 to the San Diego Padres.

Fortunately for the Red Sox, the New York Yankees split their doubleheader with the Cincinnati Reds so they maintain a ½ game lead over the Yanks for first in the AL East. The Rays are 3.5 games behind in third place.

: John Lackey(notes) #41 of the Boston Red Sox reacts after being removed from a game against the San Diego Padres at Fenway Park on June 22, 2011 in Boston, Massachusetts. The go-ahead run scored on the play. It’s a well known that I’m not a big fan of Lackey at all. Yes I know he’s got some personal issues going on this season but I wasn’t his biggest fan last season either. Sometimes I wonder if he’s a “paycheck player”. And by that I mean does he really care about anything else besides collecting his paycheck twice a month.

He missed the better part of two weeks earlier in the season with an elbow strain and said it won’t get any better without rest and cortisone shots. Now I know the Red Sox have some pitching issues right now with Daisuke Matsuzaka out for the season and Clay Buchholz having a bad back. That’s not to mention the intestinal fortitude issues Josh Beckett is going through.

But would the Red Sox be better served without Lackey in their rotation. I highly doubt he makes it through the rest of 3.5 years here. At some point Theo Epstein will have to realize his mistake and jettison Lackey off to parts unknown. Maybe Lackey can turn things around. Maybe he won’t. My money is on the latter.

He certainly didn’t help himself yesterday after the second rain delay of the afternoon. The scariest part of it all was the fact the Padres had just two hits to pick up four runs in the 4th inning.

Lackey walked Orlando Hudson then hit Anthony Rizzo with a pitch. The speedy Cameron Maybin beat out a sacrifice bunt to load up the sacks. Lackey got Nick Hundley to strikeout but then he walked Will Venable to force in a run. He followed that up by hitting his second batter of the inning in Jason Bartlett to force in another run.

With Chase Headley at the plate, Lackey uncorked a wild pitch to bring in the third run of the inning which made it 4-0. Headley then finished off Lackey’s afternoon with a single to finish off the scoring for the Padres on the day with a single that scored Venable.

Now you know that Lackey was probably praying for the rain to cancel in the game in the top of the 5th when Michael Bowden was out there pitching in an absolute downpour while the base umpires and the Red Sox infield were standing in puddles. He did get his rain delay but unfortunately Mother Nature provided a window to allow the two teams to finish up the game.

You can’t blame Lackey entirely for the loss (99.999999%). That other miniscule percent can go on the offense who left another nine batters on base and was just 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Unfortunately only one of those hits resulted in a run and that came off the bat of Adrian Gonzalez who scorched his former team for four hits on the day.

Kevin Youkilis and Dustin Pedroia continued their recent hot stretches at the plate adding two hits each to the cause.

This was one of the NL’s worst teams that came into Beantown and they escaped with two wins against the AL’s best team. A team who had been putting up runs on the scoreboard like it was nobody’s business. But poor starting pitching over the last two games on top of missed opportunities doomed the Red Sox.

No worries though for me on the team front. It’s just the 5th loss this month and the Sox are still in first place. But with the dog days of summer coming up, the pitching needs to find itself again and go on another nice little run.

With the Red Sox being off today as they make their way to the Steel City, we’ll be back later with the pitching matchups for the weekend. But for now, enjoy the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below.

Morning Red Sox Delight – 6/22

Heath Bell(notes) #21 of the San Diego Padres reacts in the ninth inning after a 5-4 win against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on June 21, 2011 in Boston, Massachusetts.

The San Diego Padres were the recipients of the same thing one of their pitchers did on Monday night. And that is take advantage of control issues from Alfredo Aceves.

Aceves appeared to be cruising along in the 2nd inning having retired Orlando Hudson and Anthony Rizzo. Then the wheels on the bus fell off for him.

He walked Cameron Maybin, Nick Hundley and Chris Denorfia to load the bases. He followed that up by walking Jason Bartlett and Chase Headley to force in two runs that put the Padres out front 2-1. Aceves ran into more trouble in the 3rd inning when he allowed two more runs on after getting the first two outs of the inning.

Rizzo doubled and came around to score on a Maybin single. After a Maybin stolen bases, Hundley brought him in with a double.

The Red Sox did battle back though getting a run in the bottom half of the 3rd when Jacoby Ellsbury singled in Josh Reddick who had led off with a triple. It would be Reddick’s RBI double that  scored Jarrod Saltalamacchia getting the Red Sox to within a run in the 4th inning.

They would finally tie up in the 6th inning when Adrian Gonzalez burned his former team for a single that scored Marco Scutaro. And as quick as the Red Sox tied it up, the Padres retook the lead in the 7th.

Dan Wheeler has struggled for the most part in his first season with the Red Sox. He left the game with the bases loaded for Daniel Bard.

Bard did his job by getting a ground ball to Gonzalez at first off the bat of Rizzo. Unfortunately Gonzalez bobbled it and couldn’t throw home allowing Headley to score. Gonzalez did get the out at first but the damage had been done.

Obviously the control issues for Aceves are a big concern but considering the fact he was making the spot start for Josh Beckett on short notice, you have to be pleased that the Red Sox were still in the game when he departed. As good as Aceves had been as a starter, last night’s effort shows he might be best suited for the Red Sox bullpen going forward.

Offensively, leaving runners in scoring position ultimately hurt the Red Sox last night. They left 13 runners on base and were just 3-for-13 with RISP. If you think back to how good this offensive has been as of late, we can only hope that last night was just a blip in the radar.

All things considered though, the Red Sox are still playing great baseball. Last night’s loss was just their fourth of the month (14-4).

Click on the read more button below to see today’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the overnight and day if you’re on the home page.

Clayton Richard (L), John Lackey (R)

After walking the San Diego Padres to victory last night, the Boston Red Sox look to take the series in the rubber game of a three-game set at Fenway Park.

Today’s first pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. and you can watch the game on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Padres television market, you can catch the game on Channel 4 SD. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

John Lackey looks for his fourth straight win since returning from the disabled list in his 11th start of 2011. In his previous 10 starts, Lackey is 5-5 with a 7.02 ERA. He will be making his first career start against the Padres this afternoon. In 30 career interleague appearances (29 starts), Lackey is 15-5 with a 3.02 ERA. He made four interleague starts for the Red Sox in 2010 and was 2-1 with a 5.11 ERA. In his lone interleague start of 2011 which came in his last time on the mound against the Milwaukee Brewers, Lackey picked up the win after allowing four runs in eight innings of work.

Clayton Richard makes his 16th start of the season for the Padres and reaches a milestone mark of 100 career appearances today. In his previous 15 starts, Richard is 2-9 with a 4.35 ERA. This will be his second career appearance (first start) against the Red Sox. In his only appearance out of the Chicago White Sox bullpen back in 2008 at Fenway Park, he allowed one run in one inning of work. In two interleague starts this year, Richard is 0-2 with a 7.20 ERA (8 ER/10 IP). As a member of the Padres, Richard is 1-3 with a 4.50 ERA in five starts during interleague play.
