Theo Serving Up Big FU to Red Sox Ownership

Theo Gives Red Sox Ownership the middle finger

About the time it was learned that Theo Epstein was leaving his position as general manager of the Boston Red Sox to head to the Windy City and the Chicago Cubs, a piece came out in the Boston Globe that didn’t put the Red Sox in a positive light at all.

There were a lot of things in that article that definitely shouldn’t have been made public. Especially anything dealing with the personal life of former skipper Terry Francona.

Well now it appears who we know who Mr. Anonymous was in the Red Sox front office.

According to Gresh and Zo of 98.5 The Sports Hub, the leak was none other than the boy wonder Theo himself.  Along with their sources, they presented some information and to me it makes sense.

One of their explanations was this: “The Cubs interviewed Terry Francona. Was this a make-good for what happened in Boston?”.

This is my one doubt.

If Theo and Tito have said publicly they have a great relationship and had one of their run together, we can’t believe this is true that Theo threw Tito under the bus. It’s hard to fathom.

It does make sense to me though that since Theo has left for the Cubs nothing really has come out other than the fact that Josh Beckett may have been responsible for Tito’s departure. Compared to the floodgates that there were after the 2011 season, this is small potatoes in a way.

We all know of his contentious relationship with Red Sox president Larry Lucchino. So if this report from Gresh and Zo is true, this was the ultimate FU to the Red Sox ownership group from Theo.

And if you think that was the ultimate FU from Theo, he may put a little more salt in the wound and rubbed it when he swooped in and beat the Red Sox to the punch in hiring Dale Sveum as the manager of the Cubs.

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

It wasn’t surprising in the fact that the Sox and Cubs were interviewing the same people to be their next manager. I get that part. Even if Theo wasn’t involved, if there were other openings, you see a lot of the same people interviewing.

The Red Sox had their second interview with Sveum yesterday and came out of it with nothing new to offer on their managerial situation. Some had seen Sveum as the front-runner for the opening with the Red Sox and the Cubs.

But Theo beat them to the punch.

First, he had Sveum back for a second interview before the Red Sox did. And secondly, he made an offer to Sveum before the Red Sox did.

And now, just like that, Sveum will be introduced to the Windy City on Friday in a press conference at Wrigley Field.

Before you go, I’ve got one more FU from Theo as well.

We all know the Red Sox and Cubs are negotiating on Theo’s value as compensation to the Red Sox for letting him go to the North Side squad. They had their deadline of November 1st and didn’t meet it. But instead of stepping in, MLB commissioner Bud Selig gave them an extension.

While it wasn’t expected that they would get something done during the MLB GM Meetings this week, from the sounds of it, they didn’t make much progress. The two sides are not expected to discuss anything further until after the Rule 5 draft in early December.

Theo doesn’t think he’s worth as much as the Red Sox do. So obviously he’s stalling as much as he can while he tries to get his organization up and running again. While the Red Sox are doing the same thing, shouldn’t the Red Sox ownership group step in and end this matter.

It’s gone on long enough and all while Theo is laughing in their faces for possibly being the leak and hiring the supposed front-runner for the manager’s job of the Red Sox.

Sounds like a totally big FU to me.

UConn Women Rock Pacific 112-53

Sometimes games against a lesser opponent is what’s needed for a team, especially one trying to find its identity after having Maya Moore for four years. It also allows UConn Huskies head coach Geno Auriemma to play different lineups to see what he’s got in case it’s ever needed.

That’s exactly what Auriemma was able to do on Tuesday night against the Pacific Tigers.

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis led six Huskies in double figures with 25 points in their 112-53 win over the Tigers in front of 6,067 at Gampel Pavilion on campus in Storrs, CT.

Ironically enough, Pacific was the last team UConn beat during their record 90 game winning streak that ended at Stanford last year. The Cardinal just happen to be UConn’s next opponent.

Connecticut's Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis releases a shot while guarded by Pacific's Kendall Rodriguez in the second half of an NCAA college basketball game Storrs, Conn., Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2011.KML rebounded from a poor shooting performance in her debut as she got her 25 points on 10-of-12 shooting including 5-of-6 from three point land. She also led the Huskies with seven rebounds. Bria Hartley had 18 points while freshman Brianna Banks added 12.

Caroline Doty, Tiffany Hayes and Kelly Faris all had 11 points with Doty adding a team-high six assists. Faris led the Huskies with six steals on the night.

Erica McKenzie led the Tigers with 16 points and also led them with five assists while Kendall Rodriguez chipped in with 12 points. Christina Thompson led Pacific with seven rebounds while adding five points.

Believe it or not, this game was close early on as UConn wasn’t on top of their game.

A Thompson layup cut UConn’s lead to three points at 9-6. With the score 11-7, the Huskies scored 10 straight points that was part of a 30-2 run that put the game away.

It was more of the same in the second half as they would build their lead up over 50 points. They hit the century mark on a KML jumper with 6:18 to go in the game.

As I said above, it was nice to see Auriemma be able to use different lineups. There’s going to be a time during the season where he’ll need to play smaller lineups and playing against a smaller Pacific team allowed him to do just that.

Nice to see KML bust out of her shooting slump from the first game. You can tell she’s going to be a special player like Moore was. Heck, she was even referred to as Moore in the initial UConn box score.

Also nice to see Banks show us what’s she got. She’s another lefty like Hayes and she might even be faster than Hayes. Pacific didn’t do a good job on defense as they allowed her to go to her dominant hand one too many times.

The Huskies now have six days to prepare for Stanford who comes to the XL Center on Monday night. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Notes and musings:

Pacific Tigers @ UConn Huskies 11.15.11 box score

Here are the postgame quotes from UConn head coach Geno Auriemma, a few of his players and Pacific coach Lynne Roberts.

The Huskies now have an 85 game home winning streak. Their last loss at home came in 2007 during the Big East Championship Game when they fell to Rutgers.

They’ve also won 118 of their last 120 home games at the XL Center and Gampel Pavilion.

UConn’s 68 points tied their record set back on January 6, 1998 when they beat Providence 126-48.

UConn is the only ranked team that is on Pacific’s schedule. That is of course subject to change as the season goes on.

The starters for UConn were Bria Hartley, Caroline Doty, Tiffany Hayes, Kelly Faris and Stefanie Dolson.

The Huskies shot an astounding 70.7% (41-58) from the floor while Pacific shot 34% (18-53).

UConn had 27 assists on their 41 made baskets.

The Huskies were 10-of-18 (55.6%) from beyond the arc.

Both teams were outstanding from the charity stripe as they both shot 90.9%. UConn was 20-of-22 while Pacific was 10-of-11.

The Huskies dominated the glass outrebounding the Tigers 34-19.

UConn had 41 points off of 26 Pacific turnovers. The Tigers had 13 points off of 15 Huskies turnovers.

The Huskies had 17 steals as a team led by Faris’ six steals.

UConn had six second chance points to four for Pacific. I guess it’s hard for the Huskies to have second chances when almost everything is falling into the basket.

Apparently Maya Moore Is Still Playing For The UConn Women

Even though she was the No. 1 draft pick by the Minnesota Lynx and won the WNBA Rookie of the Year and a WNBA Championship, Maya Moore is still apparently playing basketball for the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team.

Just take a look below at the box score from Tuesday night’s win over Pacific.

UConn Men Win Ugly Over Wagner, 78-66

It certainly wasn’t the prettiest games for the UConn Huskies men’s basketball team on Monday night. After all, it was just the second game in a long season.

Sure the Huskies have a long ways to go before they reach their full potential but you can see it’s their. Now it’s up to harness it and run with it.

UConn Huskies guard Shabazz Napier (13) scores and is fouled on this play as Wagner Seahawks guard Marcus Burton (4) and Wagner Seahawks guard Jonathon Williams (23) try to stop him during second half action. Williams was called with the foul. Napier was game high scorer with 21 points The Wagner Seahawks, coached by Danny Hurley, gave the Huskies all they could handle but in the end it was UConn who came out on top 78-66 in front of 9,217 at Gampel Pavilion on campus in Storrs, CT.

It’s the 13th straight win for UConn and second this season (2-0). Wagner falls to 1-1 on the season.

In the win over Columbia, Jeremy Lamb and Shabazz Napier led the way for the Huskies. It was no different on Monday night either.

Napier paced the Huskies with 21 points but did commit six turnovers while Lamb added 20 points and seven rebounds. DeAndre Daniels had a breakout game for the home team as he had 11 points, five rebounds and three blocks. Andre Drummond also rebounded from a poor performance in the season opener to add eight points, five rebounds and three blocked shots.

Alex Oriakhi led the Huskies with nine rebounds while Tyler Olander led the way with four assists.

Latif Rivers led the Seahawks with 11 points while both Kenneth Ortiz and Tyler Murray chipped in with 10 points each. Naofall Folahan had a team-high six rebounds while scoring nine points.

After falling behind early, Wagner took the lead at 11-8 with a 7-0 run. The Huskies would battle back though and take a 16-13 lead. Wagner would keep it close though before the Huskies closed out the first half on a 20-8 run to take a 41-28 lead.

The Huskies would push their lead to 18 points in the second half even though they went cold from the floor. They went seven minutes without a field goal making nine free throws to get it to 18 points at 61-43.

The Seahawks wouldn’t go away though as they used a 10-0 run to cut the Huskies lead to eight points. But then Shabazz took over scoring the next seven UConn points to keep Wagner from even thinking about the upset.

The Huskies took poor care of the ball as they committed 19 turnovers. Obviously that needs to improve. As we all know head coach Jim Calhoun will find something wrong with what they did. Like I said earlier, they weren’t perfect. They played well enough to get the job done.

Some positives for me include the play of Daniels and Drummond. If it weren’t for Drummond coming in, Daniels would have been the star freshman. But playing in the shadows of Drummond, he put together another solid all around game coming alive offensively and playing well on the defensive end for the second straight game.

It was also nice to see Drummond look a little more comfortable on the court. He’s used to being the man and not coming off the bench. I’m sure in time he’ll be starting but he needs to build on what he did in this game. As he gets more time, he’s going to be a beast.

UConn is back on action on Thursday night when they’ll host the Maine Black Bears at the XL Center in Hartford, CT at 7 p.m. That game will be broadcast locally in CT on SNY.

Notes and musings:

Wagner Seahawks @ UConn Huskies 11-14-11 box score

Here the postgame quotes from UConn head coach Jim Calhoun and Wagner head coach Danny Hurley as well as some of the players.

The Huskies have not lost a home game at Gampel Pavilion in the months of November and December since it opened.

The last time UConn lost a regular-season game in Storrs before Jan. 1 was in 1973, a span of 101 games.

The starters for the Huskies were Shabazz Napier, Jeremy Lamb, Roscoe Smith, Tyler Olander and Alex Oriakhi.

UConn shot 44.7% (21-47) from the floor while the Seahawks shot 39.7% (23-58).

The Huskies had just seven assists on their 21 made baskets.

UConn was 31-of-43 (72.1%) from the charity stripe. This still needs to get better but getting to the line that many times shows you something from them. They just need to convert better.

The Huskies obviously got Calhoun’s rebounding message as they dominated the glass 42-24 including 18-11 on the offensive end.

UConn had just 10 points off of 13 Wagner turnovers. The Seahawks had 17 points off of the 19 Huskies turnovers.

The Huskies had 14 second chance points to 11 for Wagner.

UConn Depth Chart For Louisville

Louisville Cardinals @ UConn Huskies

UConn Huskies head coach Paul Pasqualoni has released his depth chart for the Louisville game on Saturday at Rentschler Field and there are no changes from the depth chart from two weeks ago against Syracuse.

There’s still no Blidi Wreh-Wilson on the depth chart but Pasqualoni said during Monday’s Big East Coaches teleconference that Wreh-Wilson is questionable for the game. He stated that he’ll need to see how Wreh-Wilson performs in practice this week and could end up being a game-time decision.

While Wreh-Wilson has been out, opposing offenses have been abusing the Huskies secondary. They did allow only 275 passings in the win over Syracuse and compared to what had been happening, that’s pretty good. But the return of Wreh-Wilson would make the opposing offenses think twice about passing his way and would only help the Huskies on defense.

One other quick note as well.

The game against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on November 26th will start at 12 p.m.

It’s Time For Red Sox To Select A New Manager

According to Boston Red Sox General Manager Ben Cherrington the team has concluded its interviews for the open managers slot.  Cherrington Torey Lovullo #7 of the Toronto Blue Jays poses during photo day at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium on February 20, 2011 in Dunedin, Florida.and his staff talked with five people of various backgrounds and experience, some who have worked for the team in the past but none from the staff of deposed manager Terry Francona.

So let’s take a look at the candidates.  This is an unbiased look; it’s just the facts with no commentary.  They are listed in the order they were interviewed in and at the end I’ll tell you who I think that Cherrington and the ownership pick from and the guy I feel they will select.  I’ll also get into a bit on building a new coaching staff around the new manager of the Boston Red Sox.

So there are the candidates.  The way I see it, I agree with the Boston media that Lamont was brought in to see if he wasn’t a manager if he’d be willing to the be the bench coach for a new manager.  Lamont certainly has a ton of experience and would be a great bench coach for a guy in his first major league managing job.

Alomar, who has a lot of potential, is just too green right now for the spot.  I hate to say it because Sandy was one of my favorite players and for the fact that someday he will manage at the MLB level.  I hope he and the team took something away from his interview and he wasn’t just a minority candidate.

Mackanin, I feel may be the guy Theo Epstein tabs in Chicago to lead the Cubs.  He’s a Chicago guy, he’s a National League guy, he is smart and he accepts the entire front office being involved together concept that baseball is going to these days.  I think he’d have been a good manger in Boston as well but my gut says he will be the Cubs manager in 2012.

That brings us to two, Blue Jays first base coach Torey Lovullo and Brewers hitting coach Dale Sveum, both who have familiarity with the Boston organization.  Both are the type of manager that John Henry, Tom Werner, Larry Lucchino and Cherrington would want in the dug out.  Both are relatively young, they think with the modern progressive way of baseball and they are both highly respected through out baseball.

I think this is going to be a difficult choice for the front office.  Sveum earned rave reviews from Red Sox players when he was here as being very smart and in tune to the game, despite what fans thought of his aggressive coaching at third base.  While Lovullo has more hands on managing experience and was previously with an organization in Cleveland that is similar to Boston in how things are run.  He also comes with John Farrell’s stamp of approval.

While in my eyes the Red Sox can not go wrong with either candidate, I believe it is Torey Lovullo who will be the next manager of the Boston Red Sox.

Now to support Lovullo you need a good staff around him.  I think it’s best for the team if they keep hitting coach Dave Magadan and bullpen coach/catching instructor Gary Tuck and clear out the rest of the remaining staff from Francona’s reign.

The team needs a pitching coach seeing as the whole Curt Young thing didn’t work and he returned to Oakland.  I’d love to see them grab Dave Duncan away from St. Louis but with his wife’s current health issues that won’t happen.  So I have two candidates and both are currently not active in the game.  Ron Darling and Orel Hershisher.

Both Darling and Hershisher have earned rave reviews in their work as baseball analysts on a national level.  How did they do that?  Besides being able to communicate coherently they base their observations on what they know. Pitching. Pure and simple, listen to these guys talk about pitching and you’re sold.  Both also bring something to the table in that they’ve both played the game and both have had success.  I say get one and get that mess straightened out.

Some names you could hear as pitching coach candidates include Chicago White Sox bullpen coach Juan Nieves, Seattle Mariners bullpen coach Jaime Navarro and Texas Rangers bullpen coach Andy Hawkins.   Others may include Toronto Blue Jays bullpen coach Pat Hentgen, Colorado pitching coach Bob Apodaka, St. Louis Cardinals bullpen coach Derek Lilliquist and Miami Marlins pitching coach Randy St. Clair.  There are in house possibilities as well in Pawtucket pitching coach Rick Sauveur and Portland pitching coach Bob Kipper.

The bench coach is another important position for a manager these days. In my scenario of the Sox hiring Lovullo, who has nearly a decade as a minor league manager, that experience level isn’t so much as necessary and you can find a bench coach with managing experience at any league level.  You want a second set of eyes who views the game much along the same way you do but is also willing to offer a counter opinion.

If Lamont didn’t want the job due to loyalty to Detroit manager Jim Leyland there are others out there who would make a good bench coach.  Among them are former Baltimore Orioles manager Dave Trembley, Nick Leyva, who managed the Philadelphia Phillies, former Seattle Mariners and Washington Nationals manager John McLaren and Baltimore Orioles third base coach and former Pittsburgh Pirates manager John Russell.

As for base coaches I think it’s a matter of getting the right guys no matter their experience.  A third base coach needs to know the players and park and always be aware of the game situation something that at times in the past in appeared Tim Bogar was not.  A first base coach generally is the base running coach too and he keeps the base runner’s attention on the pitcher and the any possible scenarios he could see.

I’d like to see the Sox hire Alex Cora and/or Gabe Kapler for at least one of the base coaching positions.  Cora would be the third base coach and infield instructor and would be a nice conduit to the Latin players.  He is smart and really understands the game and some day will be a major league manager.   Kapler would be the first base coach, outfield instructor and base running coach.  As former players recently retired they would relate well with the players and be the go between from the coaching staff to the clubhouse.  They would also add a little intensity when it was needed something that was lacking in 2011.

The biggest decision though is forth coming.  In the next two weeks or so the Red Sox will hire their new manager.  I think Lovullo is the right choice for the job and it’s time to start building him a staff and a team so we can erase the memory of a terrible end to what was supposed to be a great season.
