Atchison Gets Invite To Red Sox Spring Training

When the Boston Red Sox signed Cody Ross, they needed to make room on the 40-man roster for him. They ended up doing that by designating Scott Atchison for assignment.

Boston Red SoxOn Monday, Atchison cleared waivers and was outrighted to the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox. Since he is no longer on the 40-man roster and under a minor league deal, the Red Sox have invited him to spring training as a non-roster invitee.

He’ll report with the rest of the pitchers and catchers in 10 days on February 17th.

Atchison spent the 2011 season shuttling between Pawtucket and Boston making 17 appearances with the Red Sox. In those 17 games, he was 1-0 with a 3.26 ERA. He will be given a chance to compete for a spot in the revamped Red Sox bullpen.

Louisville Embarrasses UConn Men, 80-59

Two steps forward, one step back. That would be the story of the UConn Huskies men’s basketball team.

On Saturday, it looked as though they had turned things around with a rousing win over the Seton Hall Pirates. But after their performance on Monday night against the Louisville Cardinals, any progress they had made is simply gone.

The Cardinals made 11 three-pointers on their way to routing the Huskies 80-59 in front of 21,804 and a nationally televised audience at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, KY.

UConn falls to 15-8 (5-6 Big East) while the Cardinals improve to 19-5 (7-4).

Ryan Boatright #11 of the Connecticut Huskies bends over in frustration during the Big East Conference game against the Louisville Cardinals at KFC YUM! Center on February 6, 2012 in Louisville, Kentucky.Ryan Boatright led the way for the Huskies with 18 points and also had six rebounds, a team-high five assists and four steals. Alex Oriakhi came off the bench to add 11 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots while Roscoe Smith had 10 points and five rebounds.

UConn’s leading scorer, Jeremy Lamb, was held to just seven points. Shabazz Napier’s poor shooting continued as he was 3-of-11 and ended up with nine points.

On the strength of four three-pointers, Chris Smith paced the Cardinals with 16 points. Gorgui Dieng chipped in with 15 points, six rebounds and six steals while Kyle Kuric had 10 points and nine rebounds. Chane Behanan led coach Rick Pitno’s team with 12 rebounds while adding seven points. Peyton Silva had a game-high nine assists to go along with his seven points.

Judging by the final score of this one, you would have thought the entire game was a blow out for the Cardinals. This wasn’t the case though as the game stayed close for the first half.

Louisville got out to an 8-3 lead and increased it to 11-5 before the Huskies bounced back with six straight points to tie the game up. A Kuric three gave the Cardinals lead again but UConn bounced back with six straight points to take a three point lead with 7:28 to go in the half. The Huskies would maintain that lead over the next two minutes before a Silva three tied it up at 21.

The Cardinals finished off the half on an 8-3 run to enjoy a five point lead at 29-24. They quickly built their lead up in the second half as they opened up with an 9-1 run. The Huskies would work the lead back down to 10 on an alley-oop from Lamb to Boatright.

That would be as close as the Huskies would get though as Louisville used a 20-4 run to take control of this one.

After watching UConn on Saturday, I really thought the ship was going in the right direction. But after watching the effort the players gave in the second half, it’s like Saturday never happened. I’m not going to say everyone on UConn gave up, but it looked as though to me as if some of them had.

At the rate this team is going unless something changes, they won’t make the NCAA Tournament. And if that happens, if your Jim Calhoun, do you even accept an NIT bid.

It will not get any easier for the Huskies next time out as they head to the Carrier Dome for a matchup with the No. 2 Syracuse Orange on Saturday afternoon. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the game will be broadcast nationally on CBS.

Red Sox Avoid Arbitration With Alfredo Aceves

In order to avoid going to arbitration, Boston Red Sox GM Ben Cherington had to work out deals with Alfredo Aceves and David Ortiz. And with the hearings scheduled for both of them sometime within the next 12 days, he’s running out of time to avoid the Red Sox going to arbitration for the first time since the 2002 season.

Alfredo Aceves #91 of the Boston Red Sox reacts to loading the bases in the eighth inning against the Minnesota Twins on August 10, 2011 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota.Well now,at the very least, he only has to worry about going to arbitration with one of them.

The Boston media is reporting that the Red Sox and Aceves have agreed on a one-year, $1.2 million contract. Alex Speier of WEEI.com states the contract also includes up to $100,000 in bonuses depending on how many games Aceves starts or how many appearances he makes. There’s no word on whether the contract also includes towels to wipe the pouring sweat off of his head on the mound.

Aceves had asked for $1.6 million while the Red Sox were offering $950,000 so the two sides almost met in the middle.

We do know that Aceves is heading to spring training as a starter and will compete with a slew of others for the final spot in the Red Sox rotation barring another signing (Roy Oswalt).

He was a rock out of the Red Sox bullpen in 2011. He made 55 appearances (four starts) and was 10-2 with a 2.61 ERA.

While their have been reports out there that the Red Sox are likely to go to arbitration with Big Papi, he told ESPN Deportes on Saturday that he still is holding out hope for a multi-year deal with the Red Sox.

Big Papi is seeking $16.25 million from the Red Sox while the team is offering $12.65 million.

UConn Women Cream Rutgers, 66-34

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights were playing without one of their leaders in Khadijah Rushdan. The UConn Huskies women’s basketball team hadn’t played a game in a while where they dominated from start to finish.

With Rutgers shorthanded, it didn’t take UConn long to take control of the game as they went on to a very easy 66-34 win over 9,982 on Saturday at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, CT. The crowd of 9,982 was the biggest at Gampel this season.

It’s the ninth straight win for the No. 3/3 Huskies who improve to 21-2 (9-1 Big East). With their third straight loss, No. 13/14 Rutgers falls to 17-6 (6-4).

UConn's Stefanie Dolson reacts to a Huskies basket against Rutgers at Gampel Pavilion Saturday. Playing just 20 minutes, Stefanie Dolson paced the Huskies with 16 points and had four rebounds.  Tiffany Hayes added 14 points, five rebounds and seven assists while Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis broke out of her shooting slump with 11 points and had five rebounds.

Kiah Stokes continues to impress with her improved play as she came off the bench to score 10 points and pull down five boards. Bria Hartley scored all eight of her points in the second half and also had seven assists as well as five rebounds. Kelly Faris led the Huskies with seven rebounds to go along with her four points, three assists, two steals and one blocked shot.

Monique Oliver was the only member of the Scarlet Knights to find double digits as she led them with 15 points and eight rebounds. Betnijah Laney chipped in with eight points.

Rutgers kept this one close early as they actually held a 4-2 lead. But with the scored tied at 6-6 with Dolson scoring the first six UConn points, Hayes started a 17-0 run with eight straight points. KML added the next nine points as part of that run. Nikki Speed ended the five minute scoreless drought and the UConn run with a jumper to cut the UConn lead to 23-8.

The Scarlet Knights would get back to within 10 points with a 7-2 run before the Huskies closed out the first half on a 12-4 run to enjoy a 37-19 lead at the break.

Rutgers would get only as close as 16 points twice early in the second half. UConn then used a 16-4 to take complete control of the game and never looked back from there.

Before when Dolson would go to the bench for a break or foul trouble, the Huskies were getting very little production down in the post. But with the emergence of Stokes lately, UConn head coach Geno Auriemma hasn’t had to worry about anything down there. You can definitely tell she’s played with a renewed vigor down there and that can only help the Huskies in the long run.

The Huskies will take on another ranked team their next time out on Tuesday night when they travel to the KFC Yum! Center to take on the No. 14/12 Louisville Cardinals. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast nationally on the CBS Sports Network.

Notes and musings:

Rutgers Scarlet Knights @ UConn Huskies 2.4.12 box score

Here are the postgame quotes from UConn head coach Geno Auriemma and Rutgers head coach C. Vivian Stringer. There are also quotes from select UConn players included in the link.

It’s the 98th straight home win for the Huskies. Their last loss at home came against Rutgers in the finals of the 2007 Big East Tournament.

It’s also UConn’s 58th straight Big East win.

The starters for the Huskies were the usual five suspects of Bria Hartley, Caroline Doty, Tiffany Hayes, Kelly Faris and Stefanie Dolson.

After shooting 50% in the first half, UConn finished the game shooting 44.4% (24-54). The Scarlet Knights finished the night shooting 29.5% (13-44).

The Huskies had 19 assists on their 24 made baskets.

UConn was 6-of-18 (33.3%) from beyond the arc. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis had three of the six. Hartley had two and Hayes the other. Rutgers was 0-for-7.

The Huskies went 12-of-17 (70.6%) from the charity stripe.

UConn won the battle of the boards, outrebounding Rutgers 38-26.

The Huskies outscored the Scarlet Knights 28-20 in the paint and just 2-0 on the fast break.

UConn has 22 points off of 21 Rutgers turnovers. The Scarlet Knights had nine points off of 13 UConn turnovers.

For those keeping score at home, Rutgers had 13 baskets and 17 turnovers.

The Huskies had 22 second chance points to just six for the Scarlet Knights.

UConn’s bench outscored Rutgers 24-10.

UConn Men Snap Skid With 69-46 Win Over Seton Hall

The UConn Huskies men’s basketball team came into Saturday afternoon’s game having lost four straight games and were without their leader in head coach Jim Calhoun. The Seton Hall Pirates were partially in the same boat having lost five straight games and were without one of their best players in Herb Pope.

So we knew when the final buzzer sounded that one team’s losing streak would come at the end.

Fortunately for the UConn men, the light bulbs finally went off and they were able to end their skid with a 69-46 win over the Pirates in front of a sold-out crowd at the XL Center in Hartford, CT.

With the win, the Huskies improve to 15-7 (5-5 Big East) and are now 3-1 (all in the conference) without Calhoun this season. The Pirates fall to 15-8 (4-7).

Connecticut's Ryan Boatright dribbles past Seton Hall's Haralds Karlis during the second half of his team's 69-46 victory in an NCAA college basketball game in Hartford, Conn., on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012.Ryan Boatright was the spark plug on both ends of the floor for UConn as he had 19 points, five assists and four steals. Jeremy Lamb had 17 points and eight rebound while Alex Oriakhi came off the bench to score 10 points and pull down eight boards.

Shabazz Napier’s struggles from the floor continued as he was 1-of-6 but finished with six points, eight rebounds and two assists. Andre Drummond spent most of the first half on the bench with foul trouble but had a great second half. He had seven points, six rebounds and a career-high seven blocked shots for the game.

Aaron Cosby and Jordan Theodore both led the Pirates with 10 points and each had three rebounds with Theodore adding three assists. Fuquan Edwin chipped in with nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Just like they did in their loss to Georgetown on Wednesday night, the Huskies got out to a quick start and then fell behind. They got out to a 10-4 lead before Seton Hall responded with seven straight points to take the lead at 11-10. The Huskies retook the lead on an Oriakhi layup and then things got ugly offensively for both teams.

Despite the fact UConn would never trail again in the game, they couldn’t get things going in their offense and it looked as though they might not reach 50 points again. Fortunately, Seton Hall wasn’t much better on the offensive end and began to turn the ball over.

After Theodore hit two free throws to cut the lead to one at 14-13, someone flipped a switch and the Huskies woke up on both ends of the floor. They played great defense and that led to points on the offensive end. They would use a 10-0 to take control of the game. A Boatright steal at the end of the half gave the Huskies a 30-17 lead at the break.

UConn opened up the second half on a 9-2 run behind Boatright and it looked as though they were firmly going to win the game. But then it looked as though they became disinterested and put things in cruise control. Seton Hall responded with five straight points to get within 15 points.

UConn would wake up again and push the lead to 21 points before they put it back on cruise control and watched Seton Hall wittle the lead down to 14 points. A 7-0 run started by a Lamb three ensured the Pirates would get no closer the rest of the way.

While it wasn’t their best of efforts at times, it was great to see the Huskies smiling and playing basketball like we know they can. Now what they need to do is put together a complete game and hopefully this ship will continue to sail in the right direction.

They’ll need to be at their best this week as they have two big games against Louisville and Syracuse on the road. They’ll get it started on Monday night when they head to Louisville, KY for a matchup with the Cardinals at the KFC Yum! Center. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN as part of Big Monday.

Seton Hall Pirates @ UConn Huskies 2.4.12 box score

Here are the post game quotes from UConn associate head coach George Blaney and Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard.

UConn is now 3-1 without their head coach Jim Calhoun this season.

With Blaney at the helm on Saturday, the Huskies employed a three-guard lineup. The starters were Ryan Boatright, Shabazz Napier, Jeremy Lamb, Tyler Olander and Andre Drummond.

UConn shot 43.4% (23-53) from the floor while the Pirates shot 25.9% (15-58).
