Donors Contribute $24 Million for New Basketball Center at UConn

UConn Basketball Center rendering

It’s time to break out the shovels and heavy construction equipment in Storrs, CT as UConn has raised enough money to start construction on the UConn Basketball Center.

Here’s the release:

STORRS, Conn. – Donors to the University of Connecticut have made it possible to begin construction of a major new basketball facility on the campus, adjacent to Gampel Pavilion.

The University of Connecticut Foundation announced on Tuesday that is has donations and pledges in hand for 75 percent of the construction cost of the UConn Basketball Development Center-$24 million of the $32 million needed-and will obtain financing for the project so construction can begin as soon as possible. Completion is expected to take about 24 months.

“UConn is fortunate to have many strong supporters across the nation, who have dedicated themselves to the academic advancement of the university, the research ambitions of our faculty and students, as well as athletics,” said UConn President Susan Herbst. “As we continue to build and renovate so many facilities on our multiple campuses, an outstanding new home is needed for our championship men’s and women’s basketball programs.”

Most recently, alumnus Mark Shenkman and his wife, Rosalind, committed $2 million to the facility. Mr. Shenkman is the chair of the UConn Foundation Board of Directors and previously made a $2.5 million gift to name the athletic training and student recreational facility that bears his name on the Storrs campus.

“Rosalind and I feel very blessed to be able to make this gift to the University of Connecticut. This gift represents an investment in the future of UConn basketball,” said Shenkman. “After recently visiting the practice facilities at other institutions, I realized the importance that a practice facility can have in conveying the strength of a program. The completion of this basketball practice facility will certainly perpetuate UConn’s preeminent position as one of America’s college basketball capitals.”

“The success of our men’s and women’s basketball student-athletes, in both the classroom and on the court, will be greatly enhanced by the UConn Basketball Development Center,” said UConn Director of Athletics Warde Manuel. “I want to thank Mark and Rosalind Shenkman and all of our benefactors whose generosity are allowing us to begin construction of this project. We will continue to fund raise to obtain the entire cost of the project.”

The UConn Basketball Development Center is one of the projects supported through the ambitious Our University. Our Moment. fundraising campaign launched publicly in September 2009 by the UConn Foundation. So far, $348.8 million of the $600 million campaign goal has been raised.

Red Sox to Hold 2013 Ticket Prices at 2012 Levels

There is some good news for fans of the Boston Red Sox.

The team has decided to keep ticket prices for both the 2013 spring training and the 2013 regular season at the same prices as 2012. The question remains though if the team will be any good.

Here’s the release from the Red Sox:

Boston Red SoxThe Boston Red Sox today announced that prices for all ticket categories available for public sale for the 2013 regular season at Fenway Park will be held at 2012 levels.  This “freeze” applies to both season ticket and individual game sales.  This marks the third time in five years the team has held ticket prices.  The Red Sox also froze prices for the 2009 and 2012 seasons.

“It was abundantly clear this year that we should hold the line on ticket prices,” said President/CEO Larry Lucchino. “Over the past few years, we have fallen short of our goals to play postseason baseball. Through it all, fans have shown their deep loyalty and support, for which we are all grateful. Our commitment to winning is as strong as it has ever been, and we look forward to the challenge of bringing our fans the winning and entertaining baseball team they richly deserve.”

Ticket prices for JetBlue Park at Fenway South will also be held at 2012 levels for the 2013 Spring Training season at the team’s complex in Lee County, Florida.

The club will again provide special pricing for clergy and for active members of the military, as it has for many years.

UConn Blows Late Lead; Falls in OT To Temple

Brandon McManus kicks the winning field goal in OT against UConn as Temple goes on to a 17-14 victory on Homecoming day at Rentschler Field in East Hartford Saturday.

There is a big difference between a good loss and a bad loss. No matter whatever way you skew the UConn Huskies game on Saturday afternoon, it’s a bad loss.

The Temple Owls scored a late 4th quarter touchdown and then took advantage of Chad Christen’s fourth field goal miss of the game in overtime. They got the win in OT when Brandon McManus hit a 29 yard field goal to give them a 17-14 win in front of 37,279 at Rentchler Field in East Hartford, CT.

It’s the second straight loss for the Huskies who fall to 3-4 (0-2 Big East) on the season. It’s Temple’s second straight Big East win as they improve to 3-2 (2-0). It’s also the first time in their history of Big East play that Temple has won two Big East games in a row. You may remember they were kicked out for being awful.

The way this game got started for UConn, it looked like they were going to dominate Temple on both sides of the ball. The offense opened up a little as Chandler Whitmer kept finding open receivers. Unfortunately on the first drive, Christen missed a 36 yard field goal.

After the UConn D forced the Owls to a three and out, Whitmer once again drove the Huskies down the field. This time though the result was different as he hit Michael Smith for a 15-yard touchdown. On the next series, the Huskies defense held strong and forced the Owls to punt.

And once again, Whitmer got the Huskies in the end zone when he hit Ryan Griffin down the seam for a 42-yard touchdown pass to give the Huskies a 14-0 lead.

From there though, UConn’s play calling got conservative. They were without leading rusher Lyle McCombs who was out with a hand injury suffered in last week’s loss to Rutgers. Max DeLorenzo filled in for him and wasn’t bad finishing the game up with 91 yards on 23 carries.

The problem though was the Huskies weren’t able to move the ball on the ground despite the success of DeLorenzo early on. But instead of calling pass plays, they sat back on offense.

The other problem was when they did drive the ball down the field Christen missed field goal attempts. With a chance to give the Huskies a cushion in the 4th quarter after the drive stalled at the Temple 24, Christen missed from 42 yards. Midway through the 4th quarter, he had another chance to make it a two possession game but this time his field goal from 44 yards was blocked.

Then in overtime, Christen had a chip shot field goal from 28 yards that he pushed right.

So if you want to pin this loss on Christen, you can. For me, it still all goes back to the conservative play calling.

At one point early in the 2nd quarter, UConn had almost 250 yards of total offense to about 30 or so for the Owls. Folks, UConn finished the game with 393 yards of total offense. That means for almost 2.5 to 2.75 quarters they had just over 140 yards. So you tell me what the problem is.

The Huskies were their own worst enemy on Saturday. And this loss is going to probably going to cost them any chance of going to a bowl game. There’s five games left in the season. They need to win at least three to become bowl-eligible but four wins would be more desirable. Two of those games are against ranked teams in Louisville and Cincinnati.

So to get the four wins, they need to pull of an upset. They also need to win the games they are supposed to win and not sit back on their asses like they did on Saturday afternoon. I say that because this was a game they should have beaten the Owls handedly.

They didn’t though and it becomes a bad loss.

Big East Games and Results:

Saturday, October 13

(18) Louisville 45
Pittsburgh 35

Syracuse 15
(20) Rutgers 23

Fordham
(21) Cincinnati, 7 p.m.

Things to Work On:

  • Protect Chandler Whitmer – The offensive line had improved in recent weeks but last week they gave up sacks on Whitmer. This week they allowed six sacks.
  • Open up the kicking competition – After four misses by Chad Christen, it’s time to open up the kicking competition during practice this week and give Bobby Puyol a chance to steal the job from Christen.
  • Play calling – This is the second time we’ve seen UConn go conservative on offense with a big lead. The first time almost cost them the game. This time, it did cost them the game.

Ricky Moore Joins Kevin Ollie’s Staff at UConn

Another former UConn Huskies men’s basketball player has come back home as Ricky Moore has been added to new head coach Kevin Ollie’s staff.

Here’s the release from UConn:

STORRS, Conn. — Ricky Moore, co-captain of the University of Connecticut’s first national championship men’s basketball team in 1999, has been named as the Assistant Director of Basketball Administration on head coach Kevin Ollie’s staff at UConn.

Ricky Moore SI Cover 1999Moore, a 1999 UConn graduate with a degree in community program development, comes back to Storrs after serving as an assistant basketball coach at Dartmouth College for the past two seasons, following his retirement from an 11-year career in professional basketball.

At UConn, Moore will work directly with Kevin Freeman, the Director of Basketball Administration, in a non-coaching position.

“I’m thrilled to be able to have Ricky join our staff,” Ollie said. “With his high character and strong basketball background, especially with his ties to UConn, he will be a perfect addition to help us maintain the success we have achieved. Ricky’s unselfishness as a player epitomizes the kind of attitude we are looking for from our student-athletes and from everybody associated with our program. I couldn’t be more pleased to welcome him back to the Husky family.”

As an assistant at Dartmouth the past two years, Moore was involved in all phases of the men’s basketball program under coach Paul Cormier, including recruiting, admissions, compliance, academics, and travel arrangements, as well as game planning and coaching.

Previously, Moore played professionally for 11 years in five countries — Austria, Ukraine, Sweden, Turkey, and Germany — as well as in the Continental Basketball Association and the NBA Developmental League.

Originally from Augusta, Ga., Moore came to UConn as a freshman in 1995-96 and enjoyed a tremendous amount of success. During his four seasons, the Huskies compiled an overall record of 114-24 and a BIG EAST mark of 55-17, winning three BIG EAST regular-season championships, three BIG EAST tournament championships, and reaching the 1996 NCAA Sweet 16, the 1998 NCAA Elite, and capturing the 1999 NCAA Championship.

Moore, a rare three-time co-captain, averaged 6.9 points and 3.8 assists in 134 games for UConn and his 510 assists still rank sixth on the all-time list. He scored 13 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and played his trademark suffocating defense in UConn’s 77-74 win over Duke in the 1999 NCAA Championship game. He was named to the Final Four and West Regional All-Tournament Teams and Basketball News Magazine selected him as the National Defensive Player of the Year. In 2001, he was named to UConn’s All-Century Team. Born April 10, 1976, Moore and wife Heather are the parents of two children, daughter Kendyll, 6, and son R.J., 4.
