UConn Notes:

Here is the video from UConn head coach Bob Diaco’s press conference. Here is a transcript of some his remarks from the press conference.

UConn head coach Bob Diaco made his UConn and collegiate head coaching debut on August 29th vs. BYU. Diaco served on the Notre Dame coaching staff as the defensive coordinator for the past four years and the assistant head coach for the past two. He was the 2012 winner of the Frank Broyles Award, given to the top assistant college football coach in the country and was the first Irish assistant to receive the prestigious award.

Here is UConn’s roster and 2014 schedule.

Here is UConn’s depth chart for the game.

The captains of the 2014 UConn Huskies football team are Geremy Davis, Byron Jones, Alex Mateas and Marquise Vann.

Despite UConn having virtually an entire new staff this year, seven of the Huskies’ full-time coaches have previously worked games at Rentschler Field. Head coach Bob Diaco, defensive coordinator Anthony Poindexter and assistant coach Wayne Lineburg were on the Virginia staff for a 45-10 Husky win on Sept. 13, 2008; Assistant head coach Don Patterson was on the Buffalo staff for a 24-17 UConn win on Sept. 29, 2012; Offensive coordinator Mike Cummings was on the Western Michigan staff for a 41-27 UConn win on Nov. 1, 2003; Assistant coach Kevin Wolthausen was on the Louisville staff for a 30-20 UConn loss on Dec. 3, 2005. UConn assistant coach Mike Foley is the lone holdover on the staff and is entering his ninth season.

The Huskies were picked to finish 9th in the American in 2014.

The Huskies are playing five first-time opponents this season as they opened with three-straight – BYU, Stony Brook and Boise State. The Huskies will also play first-time opponent East Carolina on October 23.

Head coach Bob Diaco and his staff have seen a large number of players get into games this season – many of them first time college performers. Diaco played 57 players against BYU, 55 against Stony Brook, 56 vs. Boise State and 55 vs. USF.

Here is a breakdown by class of Husky players who have seen their first collegiate action during the first five games of the 2014 season – a total of 23 players.

Freshman TB Arkeel Newsome scored the first touchdown of his career with a 74-yard reception vs. Temple on Sept. 27. It was UConn’s longest play since a Chandler Whitmer to Shakim Phillips 75-yard touchdown pass on Sept. 14, 2013 vs. Maryland.

LB Marquise Vann has made at least nine tackles in every game this season and leads the Huskies with 52 stops, including a career-high 14 at USF on Sept. 19.

Notes from this week’s opponent Temple:

Here is video from Tulane head coach Curtis Johnson’s weekly pregame press conference. Here are some selected quotes from his press conference.

Curtis Johnson is in third year as the head coach at Tulane and has a 10-20 record at the school. He led the Green Wave to a 7-6 record last year, including an appearance in the New Orleans Bowl. Prior to taking over at Tulane, he was the wide receivers coach for the New Orleans Saints from 2006-11 . During his time there, the Saints made the playoffs four times in six years including a Super Bowl win in the 2009 season.

He also had coaching stints at Idaho (1987-88), San Diego State (1989-93), SMU (1994), California (1995) and Miami (Fla.) (1996-2005). Johnson was on the coaching staff of Miami when the team won the national championship in 2001.

Breaking Bread With Bob – 10/7/14

Breaking Bread with Bob Diaco

UConn Huskies head football coach Bob Diaco held his weekly pregame press conference on Tuesday afternoon in anticipation of Saturday’s game against the Tulane Green Wave (8 p.m. kickoff in New Orleans, LA) and talked about a myriad of things.

Diaco got things kicked off by talking about the wonderful atmosphere at the Rent for the Temple game and once again thanked the fans and everyone who came out.

He stated it was a productive bye week, a positive one. He said being able to focus and sequester everyone helped with allowing the team to get better and how that was good for them.

He said now it’s time to get ready for Tulane. They are visiting an exciting city, a great state to play in and it’s an exciting game for the program.

He talked about how the team continues to grow in areas of production. They continue to do so on special teams in areas where they can. Offensively, he has scaled back things. They looked at what they do know and what they don’t. They are being disciplined in not adding things. He said they need to be good to great. Right now they are average to good.

He talked about the change in depth chart where the four running backs (Max DeLorenzo, Joshua Marriner, Arkeel Newsome and Ron Johnson) are all doing well, trying hard and have had great attitudes. He said to expect to see more of Newsome and Johnson going forward. He said that pair doesn’t know all of the pass protections but are getting better at it.

In talking about eliminating the mistakes that cause losing, he believes that scaling back it will help in a myriad of different areas. It should bring a better crispness to plays. He said every player and coach is improving. He said the team has the talent to block better.

He stated the coaches and players not immersed on external stuff that’s talked about the program.

He talked about Newsome in how he’s a contact, fast player. He described it as his playing speed is different or faster than actual speed.

He said the offensive line has shown growth in pass protection, their fundamentals of their jobs are getting better and they are proficient blockers.

He said they aren’t a team that necessarily forces turnovers. But to change the turnover margin, they need to protect the ball better. His goal is to be one of the top takeaway teams in the league.

He stated that if they eliminated the negative plays, the conversations about the team would be different.

He talked about Cole Ormsby and how he is aggressively fast, has great change of direction and how he plays longer than his frame.

He finally was asked about Tulane and how they’ve scored points offensively through explosive plays. He said they have three talented wide receivers.

He was asked about the similarities in the programs playing younger guys but he responded by saying Tulane is three years in while he hasn’t even reached a year yet.

He stated the defensive line is getting better and coming along great.

He said one way to stop a spread offense is to not convolute the eyes and eye progressions of the defensive players.

I asked about what he expects to see from the Tulane defense. He said they are an aggressive, pack the box, over the top type of defense. Said they have a great player in Nico Marley.

He said he’d like to get Tim Boyle in meaningful situations but he has ailments that aren’t considered injuries.

He said that Deshon Foxx is a live package and not a wildcat type of one. Foxx can make all the throws.

He finished up by saying the team was very upset after the Temple loss and how he talked to them about and pointed out the positive things to prevent the losing mentality from coming back.

We’ll have more as the week goes on including some stuff from Foxx, Andreas Knappe and Chandler Whitmer.

UConn Huskies Depth Chart For Tulane Green Wave

UConn Huskies @ Tulane Green Wave

Prior to Tuesday’s press conference for the game against the Tulane Green Wave this Saturday night in New Orleans, LA, UConn Huskies head coach Bob Diaco released his depth chart for the game and there are changes to it from the Temple game depth chart.

With the injury to RT Dalton Gifford, Andreas Knappe is now the starter there. Thomas Hopkins will back up Knappe.

Max DeLorenzo was the starter at tailback but is now listed in a “OR” situation with Joshua Marriner, Arkeel Newsome, and Ron Johnson.

Kamal Abrams is no longer listed in “OR” situation with Dhameer Bradley as the backup behind Deshon Foxx at wide receiver.

Defensively, Folorunso “Foley” Fatukasi is now in an “OR’ situation with B.J. McBryde at defensive tackle. Cole Ormsby was there but now backs up Kenton Adeyemi at defensive end.

Vontae Diggs is now the back up to Graham Stewart at linebacker. Cameron Stapleton had been listed there previously.

Due to injury, Ellis Marder is now off the depth chart. He had been in an “OR” situation with Junior Lee as the backup to Obi Melifonwu.

Newsome is now the starter at kick returner in place of Foxx. This isn’t really news as Newsome has been there instead of Foxx the past few games.
