Theo Serving Up Big FU to Red Sox Ownership

Theo Gives Red Sox Ownership the middle finger

About the time it was learned that Theo Epstein was leaving his position as general manager of the Boston Red Sox to head to the Windy City and the Chicago Cubs, a piece came out in the Boston Globe that didn’t put the Red Sox in a positive light at all.

There were a lot of things in that article that definitely shouldn’t have been made public. Especially anything dealing with the personal life of former skipper Terry Francona.

Well now it appears who we know who Mr. Anonymous was in the Red Sox front office.

According to Gresh and Zo of 98.5 The Sports Hub, the leak was none other than the boy wonder Theo himself.  Along with their sources, they presented some information and to me it makes sense.

One of their explanations was this: “The Cubs interviewed Terry Francona. Was this a make-good for what happened in Boston?”.

This is my one doubt.

If Theo and Tito have said publicly they have a great relationship and had one of their run together, we can’t believe this is true that Theo threw Tito under the bus. It’s hard to fathom.

It does make sense to me though that since Theo has left for the Cubs nothing really has come out other than the fact that Josh Beckett may have been responsible for Tito’s departure. Compared to the floodgates that there were after the 2011 season, this is small potatoes in a way.

We all know of his contentious relationship with Red Sox president Larry Lucchino. So if this report from Gresh and Zo is true, this was the ultimate FU to the Red Sox ownership group from Theo.

And if you think that was the ultimate FU from Theo, he may put a little more salt in the wound and rubbed it when he swooped in and beat the Red Sox to the punch in hiring Dale Sveum as the manager of the Cubs.

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

It wasn’t surprising in the fact that the Sox and Cubs were interviewing the same people to be their next manager. I get that part. Even if Theo wasn’t involved, if there were other openings, you see a lot of the same people interviewing.

The Red Sox had their second interview with Sveum yesterday and came out of it with nothing new to offer on their managerial situation. Some had seen Sveum as the front-runner for the opening with the Red Sox and the Cubs.

But Theo beat them to the punch.

First, he had Sveum back for a second interview before the Red Sox did. And secondly, he made an offer to Sveum before the Red Sox did.

And now, just like that, Sveum will be introduced to the Windy City on Friday in a press conference at Wrigley Field.

Before you go, I’ve got one more FU from Theo as well.

We all know the Red Sox and Cubs are negotiating on Theo’s value as compensation to the Red Sox for letting him go to the North Side squad. They had their deadline of November 1st and didn’t meet it. But instead of stepping in, MLB commissioner Bud Selig gave them an extension.

While it wasn’t expected that they would get something done during the MLB GM Meetings this week, from the sounds of it, they didn’t make much progress. The two sides are not expected to discuss anything further until after the Rule 5 draft in early December.

Theo doesn’t think he’s worth as much as the Red Sox do. So obviously he’s stalling as much as he can while he tries to get his organization up and running again. While the Red Sox are doing the same thing, shouldn’t the Red Sox ownership group step in and end this matter.

It’s gone on long enough and all while Theo is laughing in their faces for possibly being the leak and hiring the supposed front-runner for the manager’s job of the Red Sox.

Sounds like a totally big FU to me.

2012 NCAA Women’s Basketball Rankings – Week 1 (Nov. 15)

AP & ESPN/USA Today Coaches Polls

The NCAA women’s basketball rankings came out on Tuesday for the first time since the preseason and the UConn Huskies women’s team still finds themselves as the No. 4 team in both polls.

There are no changes to the top five in either poll which are the same. Texas A&M is ranked No. 1 and is followed by Notre Dame, Tennessee, UConn and Stanford.

Joining the Irish and Huskies in the top 25 from the Big East are the Louisville Cardinals (9/10), Georgetown Hoyas (14/16), Rutgers Scarlet Knights (15/15) and DePaul Blue Demons (18/18).

The St. John’s Red Storm are the only team from the Big East among the others receiving votes in both polls. The Villanova Wildcats, Syracuse Orange and Marquette Golden Eagles are among the others receiving votes in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll.

The polls actually came out yesterday and it totally slipped my mind. With that said, the records of the teams may not reflect their current record if they played on Tuesday night.

2011 AL & NL Manager of the Year Awards

Joe Maddon (L), Kirk Gibson (R)

Continuing on with the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) 2011 end of the year awards, we now know who they have selected as their 2011 AL and NL Manager of the Year.

In the American League, the BBWAA has chosen Tampa Bay Rays skipper  Joe Maddon as their winner.  And in the NL, they have chosen Arizona Diamondbacks skipper Kirk Gibson.

Maddon led his Rays team on a historic comeback as they overcame a nine game deficit in the AL Wild Card standings and made the playoffs on the final day of the 2011 season. This is the second AL Manager of the Year Award for Maddon, the first coming after the 2008 season.

Former Red Sox manager Terry Francona did not receive any votes.

This was Gibson’s first full year managing the Diamondbacks and all he did was help lead them to the NL West title, a year after they finished in last place.

Next up in the BBWAA awards will be the NL Cy Young Award tomorrow. The final two awards, the AL & NL MVP will be presented next Monday, November 21st (AL MVP) and Tuesday, November 22nd (NL MVP). The 2011 AL & NL Rookie of the Year Awards were presented on Monday and the AL Cy Young Award on Tuesday.

Orsillo Back With NESN Through 2015; Watney Going Back To Cali

NESN

There’s some good news and some bad news about the broadcasting situation on NESN for the 2012 Boston Red Sox season.

The good news is that it according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe via Twitter, NESN has re-signed their Red Sox play-by-play guy Don Orsillo to a new deal that will run through the 2015 season. There had been some rumors out there that he was being courted by TBS. Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com is reporting that the MLB Network also had interest in him as well.

Orsillo has been the voice of the Red Sox since 2001 season where he has worked along side Jerry Remy.

However the dynamic duo will not be working with Heidi Watney next season as her contract has expired at NESN. McAdam reports that Heidi is heading to Southern California where she’ll be the sideline reporter for the Los Angeles Lakers on Time Warner Cable beginning with the 2012-13 season.

Watney had been with NESN on the Red Sox games since May of 2008. Best of luck to her back in her native California.

Bloguin Heisman Trophy Poll – Week 11

Bloguin Heisman TrophyEach week a group of Bloguin college football bloggers get together and put our votes in for the top Heisman Trophy candidates. Then after the votes are tabulated by Kevin over at College Football Zealots, the poll is released on Wednesday.

Here are the results for week eight of the 2011 college football season. Be sure to head over Crystal Ball Run for a full look at the results for the week for more insight on the poll.

  1. Andrew Luck (QB-Stanford) – 22 Points, 25.88%, 4 1st Place Votes
  2. Brandon Weeden (QB-Oklahoma State)- 20 Points, 23.53%, 5 1st Place Votes
  3. Trent Richardson (RB-Alabama) – 16 Points, 18.82%, 1 1st Place Vote
  4. Case Keenum (QB-Houston)- 11 Points, 12.94%, 2 1st Place Votes
  • Also Receiving Votes: Robert Griffin III (QB- Baylor) 5 pts, Justin Blackmon (WR- Oklahoma State) 3 pts, Colin Klein (QB- Kansas State) 3 pts, Montee Ball (RB- Wisconsin) 2 pts, Kellen Moore (QB- Boise State) 1 pt, Matt Barkley (QB- USC) 1 pt, David Wilson (RB- Virginia Tech) 1 pt
  • Dropped Out: Ryan Broyles (WR- Oklahoma)

In case you were wondering, this is how I voted:

1. Brandon Weeden, QB,  Oklahoma State – In a what have you done for me lately world, Weedon has simply been getting the job done. He has Okie State team at 10-0 after another impressive performance. In his team’s 66-10 win over Texas Tech, he completed 31-of-37 passes for 423 yards and five touchdowns. Solid performances in his final two games against Iowa State and Oklahoma could give the Heisman voters someone else to think about.

2. Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford – Luck drops in my poll (just because I didn’t vote the past two weeks doesn’t mean I wasn’t paying attention) partly because Stanford lost and partly because he wasn’t all that great against the Oregon Ducks. Sure he threw for 271 yards and three touchdowns. But he also threw two interceptions that resulted in 15 points for the Ducks.

3. Case Keenum, QB, Houston – Keenum seems to be in the Heisman race every year. He was there early on last year before an injury derailed his season. But in his sixth year with the Cougars, he’s putting up stellar numbers again. He put up three of his 37 touchdown passes in their 73-17 win over Tulane. He’s also took good care of the ball throwing just three interceptions all season. Despite his numbers, you have to wonder how serious voters will take him because of the schedule the Cougars play in Conference USA
