Friday Red Sox Mediocrity – 8/24

Bruce Chen (L), Jon Lester (R)

After being swept by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the Boston Red Sox look to turn the seven-game homestand around tonight in the first game of a four-game set with the Kansas City Royals at historic Fenway Park.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Royals television market, you can catch the game on Fox Sports Kansas City. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

Jon Lester looks for his third straight win in his 26th start of 2012. In his previous 25 starts, Lester is 7-10 with a 5.03 ERA. He took the loss in his only start of the season against the Royals after allowing one run in five innings of work back on May 9th. Lester has made eight career starts against the Royals and is 5-2 with a 1.35 ERA. He’s been perfect against them at the Fens as he is 4-0 with a 0.48 ERA (2 ER/37.1 IP) in five starts.

The well traveled veteran Bruce Chen makes his 27th start of the 2012 season. In his previous 26 starts, Chen is 9-10 with a 5.45 ERA. He was matched up with Lester in that May 9th start and picked up the win after allowing three earned runs in 6.2 innings of work. Chen has made 17 career appearances (10 starts) against his former club and is 4-6 with a 5.76 ERA. 11 of those appearances (five starts) have come at the Fens where he is 1-3 with a 7.00 ERA.

Red Sox News & Notes – 8/24

Vernon Wells #10 of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim stands in left field in front of the scoreboard in the 10th inning during the game on August 23, 2012 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts.

As I was gathering my thoughts to write about last night’s Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim game, I didn’t really know what to say. I thought about not writing anything at all because I wasn’t sure if there were any words to describe what happened.

Then I thought about it some more.

If you wanted to know how the 2012 season has gone for the Red Sox, all you needed to do is watch last night’s game.

Things started out swimmingly for them as they got off to a 6-0 lead. And if you turned off the channel and came back 20 minutes or so later, the Red Sox were losing 8-6. By the time all was said and done, the Angels walked out of historic Fenway Park with a 14-13 win in 10 innings and a three game sweep of the local nine.

So what did the Red Sox in last night?

Obviously it wasn’t the offense. They did their collective jobs.

Dustin Pedroia led the way with four hits and five RBIs, including a 3-run blast in the 2nd inning. Pedro Ciriaco had a four-hit effort while Jacoby Ellsbury had three hits and three RBIs. Cody Ross had two hits and two RBIs, including a solo home run in the 9th that forced extra innings. The only member of the starting nine without a hit was Ryan Lavarnway.

So what did the Red Sox in last night?

It was the pitching and defense.

Franklin Morales has pitched well in a starting role for the Red Sox with his only downfalls coming against the New York Yankees. He got through the first two innings unscathed only to not make it out of the 3rd.

It was so bad for the Red Sox in the 3rd that they needed three pitchers including Morales to get out of the inning. They were hurt by a Pedro Ciriaco error and the fact that Morales lost focus on the mound. Clayton Mortensen had his first bad outing as he didn’t retire any of the four batters he faced and allowed all three inherited runners to score. Junichi Tazawa finally got them out of the inning by getting the 13th batter of the inning, Howie Kendrick, to ground out.

Tazawa and Mark Melancon kept the Angels at eight runs while the offense battled back to take a 9-8 lead. But it didn’t last long as Andrew Bailey was tagged for a run in the 7th that knotted it back up.

Ellsbury and Pedroia came up big in the 8th to give the Red Sox the lead and with the way Alfredo Aceves had been pitching as of late, one would think this gmae was over. But with the way this game had been going all night for the Red Sox, you knew it wouldn’t.

And if you thought that that, you were right as the Angels got three in the top of the 9th to take the one-run lead. A Ross error was part of that in the inning and obviously he atoned for that with the game-tying home run.

But in a curious decision, Bobby Valentine sent Aceves back out for the 10th after throwing over 30 pitches in the fateful 9th. It backfired as Kendry Morales homered. He allowed another single to Erick Aybar and was pulled from the game. Craig Breslow came in and gave up a double to Vernon Wells that brought in Aybar.

The offense once again battled back in the 10th when Pedroia singled in Ciriaco but the game ended as Adrian Gonzalez struck out.

So as I said above, what can you say about this?

It wasn’t just one thing that went wrong, it was a myriad of things.

Give the Red Sox credit for not quitting. That’s about all I got.

We’ll be back later with today’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day.

Thursday Red Sox Mediocrity – 8/23

C.J. Wilson (L), Franklin Morales (R)

After falling 7-3 last night, the Boston Red Sox look to avoid being swept tonight in the finale of a three-game set with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at historic Fenway Park.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Angels television market, you can catch the game on Fox Sports West. And if you don’t live in either market you’re in luck as the MLB Network will have coverage of the game (not in Red Sox or Angels television markets). If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

Franklin Morales looks to rebound from a poor start his last time out in his ninth start (37th apperance) of 2012. In his previous 36 appearances (eight starts), Morales is 3-4 with a 3.67 ERA. As a starter this season, he is 3-3 with a 3.98 ERA. His lone career appearance against the Angels came as a member of the Colorado Rockies in 2010 when he allowed two runs in 1.1 innings of work.

C.J. Wilson will try to help his team get the brooms out in his 27th start of 2012. In his previous 26 starts, Wilson is 9-9 with a 3.62 ERA. He made two starts against the Red Sox in 2011 as a member of the Texas Rangers in which he was 1-0 with a 1.46 ERA (2 ER/12.1 IP). He’s had great success against the Red Sox in his career as he is 4-1 with a 1.43 ERA in 17 appearances (five starts). Eight of those appearances (two starts) have come at the Fens where he is 2-1 with a 1.65 ERA.

Red Sox News & Notes – 8/23

Howard Kendrick #47 of the Los Angeles Angels rounds the bases on a home run he hit off of Clay Buchholz #11 of the Boston Red Sox in the sixth inning against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on August 22, 2012 in Boston, Massachusetts.

For the last few months whenever the Boston Red Sox have needed a big start, they’ve been able to count on Clay Buchholz. But for the first time in a long while, Buchholz wasn’t able to deliver.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim roughed up Buchholz as they went on to beat the Red Sox 7-3.

With the loss, the Red Sox fall six games below .500 to 59-65. The last time this season the Red Sox were this far below .500 was on May 11th when they were 13-19. The game before, they were seven games below .500.

It was obvious Buchholz didn’t have his best stuff last night as he was continously leaving pitches up in the zone. The Angels battered him for 12 hits in his 5.1 innings and he was charged with all seven runs scored by the Halos.

It looked like he’d have a good night on the mound as he set the down the Angels in order through the first two innings. Things took a turn for the worst in the 3rd when he allowed three straight singles that scored the first run of the game. They got their second run on the next batter when rookie phenom Mike Trout brought in a run on double play.

The Angels would add two more in the 4th and two more in the 6th. One of those runs in the 6th came on a Howie Kendrick home run and the other came after Junichi Tazawa allowed one the inherited runners left by Buchholz to score.

The offense did try to get the Red Sox back in the game even with Jered Weaver pitching.

With one out in the 4th, Jarrod Saltalamacchia singled. He would come around to score when Ryan Lavarnway knocked in his first run of the 2012 season with a double. He quickly crossed the plate as Mike Aviles followed with a double of his own. They added another run in the 8th on a Cody Ross double but that’s all they could muster.

The Red Sox are deeply falling into the abyss as at times, it just doesn’t look like they care. I know that’s not the case but on the outside it can appear that way.

The deper the hole the Red Sox fall into, the more the media will write things about them as to why it happened. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least to see more negative things come out about this team in the coming weeks.

While we all know the Red Sox aren’t going to make the playoffs this year, it would be nice to see the close out the season on a positive note. The baseball operations department needs to do some serious evaluating of things from top to bottom and see what pieces they have to build around again. Nobody expected this from the Red Sox this season but it is what is.

We’ll be back later with today’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. So for now, let’s take a look at the overnight links from the media.
