Hensick Leads Wolf Pack Past Pirates, 4-2

Hartford, CT, March 1, 2014 – Dov Grumet-Morris made 31 saves, to improve his record to 8-1-1 in his last 10 decisions, Saturday night at the XL Center, and T.J. Hensick had a goal and an assist, as the Hartford Wolf Pack downed the Portland Pirates, 4-2.

Hartford Wolf PackThe win was the fourth straight for the Wolf Pack, which also got goals from Danny Syvret and Dylan McIlrath, and an empty-net tally from Arron AshamDarroll Powe and Jesper Fast had two assists apiece.  Jordan Martinook and Andy Miele scored for the Pirates.

“We believe in ourselves right now and we’re rolling in the right direction,” Hensick said.  “We’ve just got to keep it going into tomorrow night.”

The Wolf Pack and Pirates complete a home-and-home set Sunday afternoon at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine.

After having fallen behind 3-0 in the first period of the last meeting between the two teams Tuesday night in Lewiston, the Wolf Pack scored the first three of Saturday’s contest.

Syvret opened the scoring in a four-on-four situation at 6:40 of the first period, off of an assist from Powe.  Powe moved the puck from the right-wing circle to Syvret at the left point, and Syvret moved down to the top of the circle before slamming a shot past Pirate starting goaltender Louis Domingue on the stick side.

Hensick made it a 2-0 Wolf Pack lead at 9:55, with Powe again creating the play.  Domingue made a stellar save, sliding to his left, on a wraparound try by Powe, but as the Pirates’ Ethan Werek tried to drop it back to Domingue, it slid through his legs and laid loose for Hensick to bang into the net.

McIlrath then scored his fifth of the season at 14:01, to increase the lead to 3-0.  Hensick feathered a pass from the left-wing boards to a wide-open McIlrath headed up the slot, and McIlrath niftily pulled the puck back before rapping it past Domingue from close range.

The Pirates replaced Domingue (four saves) with Mark Visentin at that point, and Portland would get on the scoreboard with only 8.2 seconds remaining in the period.  After the Wolf Pack were unable to get the puck out of their zone up the boards, Martinook broke down the left-wing side and snapped a shot that squeezed past Grumet-Morris on the glove side.

Portland carried the momentum of that goal into the second period, in which they outshot the Wolf Pack by a margin of 14-5, but Grumet-Morris kept the Pirates from cutting further into the lead.

Portland closed to within one goal at 4:17 of the third period on a power play, with Conor Allen off for roughing.  Daine Todd worked the puck to Miele near the top of the left circle, and Miele’s shot went through a screen and past Grumet-Morris.

The Wolf Pack settled things down after that, though, and Asham, who had missed 15 straight games before returning to the Hartford lineup Friday night, fired home an open-net goal at 19:12 to ice the victory.

The Wolf Pack and Pirates face off again at 4:00 PM Sunday back up in Lewiston.  All of the action of that battle can be heard live on Fox Sports Radio 1410, and on-line at www.foxsportsradio1410.com and iHeartRadio.  Video streaming is available at www.ahllive.com.

The Wolf Pack’s next home game is this Friday, March 7, a 7:00 PM contest against the Springfield Falcons.  All Wolf Pack Friday-night home games feature $1 hot dogs and $2 beers through the start of the second period, presented by Marc’s Appliance Warehouse, located at 75 Prospect Ave., Hartford, CT.

Video: UConn Women Blow Out Rutgers 72-35 on Senior Night

UConn coach Geno Auriemma poses for a photo with his two seniors, guard Bria Hartley and center Stefanie Dolson at Gampel Pavilion Saturday after the two were honored at Senior Day ceremonies before their last home game of the regular season against Rutgers.

Stefanie Dolson danced her way to head coach Geno Auriemma during the Senior Day festivies for the UConn Huskies women's basketball team. Fellow senior Bria Hartley was a little more calm just walking over there.

And once the game got going, both were running down the floor doing their thing helping their team continue its perfect season.

The UConn women clinched a share of the American Athletic Conference title on Saturday as they blasted the No. 24 Rutgers Scarlet Knights 72-35 in front of a sold-out crowd at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, CT.

UConn improves to 30-0 (17-0 American) while Rutgers falls to 21-7 (12-5).

Breanna Stewart and Hartley led the Huskies with 20 points each. Stewart ended up finishing with a double-double as she pulled down 10 rebounds as well. Moriah Jefferson added nine points and four assists.

Dolson joined the 1,000 points/1,000 rebounds club at UConn as she had 10 rebounds to tie Stewart for game-high.

Betnijah Laney led the Scarlet Knights with 14 points and nine rebounds. Tyler Scaife added eight points while Briyona Canty had six.

The Huskies opened up the game by taking a 16-8 lead. They seized control of the game of the game with a 14-2 run to make it 30-10.

Rutgers would never threaten again.

The outright AAC title is on the line for the Huskies on Monday night when they head to Louisville, KY for a matchup with the Louisville Wildcats. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Video: UConn Takes Down No. 11 Cincinnati, 51-45

Connecticut guard Shabazz Napier glides in for two of his game high 18 points against Sean Kilpatrick and the Cincinnati Bearcats.

At this point in the season, it doesn't matter how you win the game, it just matters if you win. Especially when you're playing for seeding before the upcoming conference tournament.

So despite not scoring a field goal for the final 7:39 of the game, the UConn Huskies upset the No. 11 Cincinnati Bearcats 51-45 in front of a sold-out crowd at the XL Center on Saturday afternoon.

UConn improves to 23-6 (11-5 American) while Cincinnati falls to 24-5 (13-3).

Shabazz Napier led the Huskies with a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds. Lasan Kromah added nine points while Ryan Boatright had seven points.

Sean Kilpatrick paced the Bearcats with 16 points and had five rebounds. Shaquille Thomas added eight points while Titus Rubles and Ge'Lawn Guyn both had six. Rubles led Cincinnati with 13 rebounds before fouling out.

You could call this game a defensive struggle or two teams who shot the ball poorly.

The Bearcats shot just 27.1% (13-48) while UConn shot 31.3% (15-48).

The game stayed relatively close in the first half as both teams exchanged the lead in a low scoring affair. Cincinnati got out to a five point lead towards the end of the half before the Huskies closed it out on a 6-0 run.

UConn would build its lead in the second half as the Bearcats went cold for the seven and half minutes. They got the lead to ten points before their cold streak happened.

Fortunately, UConn clamped down on defense, Cincinnati made some mistakes and the Huskies hit their free throws to pull out the six point victory.

UConn showed its resiliency in overcoming the shooting difficulties. They still aren't playing their best offensively but defensively it's another story. This is a team as well as Cincinnati teams aren't going to want to play during tournament time.

Next up for the Huskies are the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Wednesday night at Gampel Pavilion. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. and it's Senior Night for UConn.

Wolf Pack Slip Past Bears in Shootout Win, 2-1

Hartford, CT, February 28, 2014 – Dov Grumet-Morris made 29 saves Friday night at the XL Center, and Marek Hrivik and T.J. Hensick scored shootout goals, as the Hartford Wolf Pack captured their third straight win, 2-1 over the Hershey Bears.

Hartford Wolf PackThe Wolf Pack had not won three consecutive games since a five-game winning streak October 5-19, and now have at least a point in six of their last eight games (5-2-0-1).  They have come from behind to win in the third period in each of the three victories in their current streak.

Peter LeBlanc scored a late second-period goal for Hershey, and Ryan Bourque replied for the Wolf Pack on a third-period two-man advantage.  David Leggio made 34 saves in the Hershey net.

“Third periods have been pretty good to us this season,” Wolf Pack head coach Ken Gernander said.  “We had some opportunities on the power play, our guys stuck with it. We got a big goal to send it to overtime and we picked up two points in the shootout.”

The two teams battled through nearly two full scoreless periods, before the Bears finally opened the scoring with 1:04 remaining in the second period, just 10 seconds after a Hershey power play expired.  Matt Watkins wrapped the puck around the post to Grumet-Morris’ left, and it slid right to LeBlanc headed down the left side of the slot.  Grumet-Morris could not move to his right fast enough, and LeBlanc’s one-timer found the back of the net.

The Wolf Pack then took advantage of some Hershey penalty trouble in the third period.  The Bears took three minor penalties in quick succession starting at 7:34, and a boarding infraction against Julien Brouillette at 9:51 gave Hartford 1:35 of five-on-three time.

Near the end of that man advantage, Oscar Lindberg moved down the right-wing side and fired a shot that went off of Bourque, who was causing traffic to Leggio’s left, and deflected into the net at 11:15.

That was the end of the scoring through the rest of regulation and overtime, and in the shootout, Leggio stopped Jesper Fast on the Wolf Pack’s first attempt, but Hrivik and Hensick then scored on back-to-back shots.  That proved to be enough, as, after Ryan Stoa connected on Hershey’s first attempt, Grumet-Morris stopped four straight, including a poke-check on Jeff Taffe to end the game.

The Wolf Pack are right back on home ice at the XL Center Saturday night, hosting the Portland Pirates in a 7:00 game.  Tickets for all Wolf Pack 2013-14 home games are on sale now at the Public Power Ticket Office at the XL Center, on-line at www.hartfordwolfpack.com and by phone at (877) 522-8499.  Wolf Pack tickets start as low as $12 for youth 12 years old or younger.  To speak with a representative about season or group tickets, call (855) 762-6451.

UConn’s Shabazz Napier Named A Finalist For Oscar Robertson Trophy

ST. LOUIS (USBWA) – University of Connecticut senior point guard Shabazz Napier (Roxbury, Mass) has been named one of 15 finalists for the 2014 Oscar Robertson National Player of the Year Trophy, as announced by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Thursday.

Oscar Robertson TrophyNapier, who leads the Huskies in points (17.8), rebounds (5.9) and assists (5.5) this season, has also been named a finalist for the Naismith Trophy, Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award, Senior CLASS Award and John Wooden Award. He also leads UConn in steals (1.9), and is attempting to become the first Connecticut player to ever lead a team in points, rebounds and assists through an entire season.

He has earned American Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors four times this season and his 19.7 points a game in conference play is second in the league behind Cincinnati’s Sean Kilpatrick (21.7), who Napier and the Huskies face Saturday. The UConn guard has guided Connecticut to a 22-6 overall record, including two wins over the nationally-ranked Memphis Tigers and a victory against the current No. 1 Florida Gators, a contest in which Napier hit a game-winning shot at the buzzer.

Napier is the only Husky to ever amass both 1,500 points and 500 assists in his career and record two triple-doubles. His 230 steals are the second-most ever for a UConn player, while his 450 free throws are third all-time in program history. Connecticut’s game against the Bearcats Saturday tips off at 12 p.m. at the XL Center and will be broadcasted on ESPN, and can be heard live on the UConn IMG Radio Network.

UConn Women’s Trio Selected As Naismith Trophy National Semifinalists

Naismith Women's College Player of the Year

ATLANTA, Ga. – A trio of Huskies have been identified as national semifinalists for the 2014 Women's Naismith Trophy, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced on Thursday. Seniors Stefanie Dolson (Port Jervis, N.Y.) and Bria Hartley (North Babylon, N.Y.) along with sophomore standout Breanna Stewart (Syracuse, N.Y.) were three of ten players to be named semifinalists. UConn leads all schools with three players in the running and the American Athletic Conference leads all leagues with four representatives including Louisville's Shoni Schimmel. Notre Dame is the only other institution to have multiple players selected in Jewell Loyd and Kayla McBride.

The Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T is awarded annually to the men's and women's college basketball players of the year. The voting academy bases its criteria on player performance throughout the season. The Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors will narrow the top 10 semifinalists down to four finalists, which will be announced on March 21. The Naismith Award winner will be announced on April 7.

Stefanie Dolson has been excellent for the Huskies this season. The senior forward boasts the third-highest points per game average on the team with 12.9 and leads the squad with 9.1 rebounds per contest. Her 69 total blocks are a season-best for the senior and have helped the team tie the program single-season record with 250 rejections on the year. Dolson, a 2012-13 State Farm/WBCA All-America selection, is also a finalist for the Senior Class Award.  Fans can vote for Dolson HERE!

Also posting career numbers in her senior year is Bria Hartley. The North Babylon, N.Y. native is averaging 16.6 points per game and 4.2 assists per game, both of which rank second-highest among Huskies. She has set career-highs in points and assists this season, tallying 30 points against Rutgers and dishing out 11 assists at Temple on Jan. 28 that represented her first-ever double-double at UConn. Until this season, Hartley had never posted back-to-back 20 point games in her career at Connecticut, but the senior has done so in three consecutive contests on two separate occasions this year. Perhaps at no time this season has she been more consistently dominant than in her last 13 games, across which she has averaged 20.4 points, 3.7 assists and shot an impressive 53.6 percent from the floor.

Breanna Stewart's numbers speak for themselves, as the sophomore leads Connecticut and ranks second in the conference with 19.4 points per game while bringing down an average 6.0 rebounds per contest. The Syracuse, N.Y. native has logged seven double-doubles on the season and hit 20-plus points in 14 games, only missing double-digits in two games this season. In addition to offensive production, Stewart owns the highest number of blocked shots on the season with 82 rejections. On Feb. 16, Stewart recorded UConn's first basket against USF to earn her 1,000th career point, becoming the second-fastest Husky to reach the milestone. She is just the fifth Husky to achieve the honor as a sophomore.

In the history of the Naismith Trophy, five Huskies have earned the award in seven different seasons. Rebecca Lobo first took home the honors for Connecticut in the 1995 season after winning the program's first National Championship. In 2002, the Naismith Award was bestowed on Sue Bird after UConn's first of three consecutive National Titles. Diana Taurasi followed on Bird's heels  as a back-to-back recipient in 2003 and 2004. Most recently, Tina Charles earned the honors in 2010, in between Maya Moore's two seasons as the Naismith Award winner in 2009 and 2011.
