Patriots Cut Sanders, Wilhite and Nine Others

The New England Patriots some cuts more than 24 hours early today.  The NFL mandates that teams have their rosters cut from 90 to 80 by 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.  I don’t think the Patriots were quite sitting at 90 but here are the players that were released:

  • New England PatriotsS James Sanders
  • CB Jonathan Wilhite
  • LS Matt Katula
  • DE Clay Nurse
  • K Chris Koepplin
  • DT Kade Weston
  • TE Garrett Mills
  • WR Tyree Barnes
  • WR Darnell Jenkins
  • DB Malcom Williams
  • OL Mark Wetterer

The biggest names amongst the cuts are obviously Sanders, Wilhite and Katula.

Sanders, a former starter, was projected as the third safety and he was scheduled to make $2.8 million this season which the team probably thought was a bit pricey for a part-time player.

Wilhite was seemingly on the bubble of making the team all preseason as it tries to straighten out its secondary woes of last year.

Katula was struggling as a long snapper and Bill Belichick says he expects to sign another one in the next few days thereby negating using LB Rob Ninkovich in that role.

Among the others who were released was Williams, who was a 7th round pick in this year’s draft.  All the other players were long shots at best to make the team that is very deep on the defensive line and at wide receiver.

Lions Outplay Patriots in 34-10 Win

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford (9) throws against the New England Patriots in the first quarter of an NFL preseason football game in Detroit, Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011.

It was not a good night in Detroit for the New England Patriots.  The Lions, who for years have been everyone’s doormats, totally outplayed the Patriots in every phase of the game as they cruised to a 34-10 win Saturday night at Ford Field.

It didn’t start good for the New England Patriots didn’t look so hot in the first half Saturday night in Detroit.  The offensive line was shaky at best in their protection of Tom Brady allowing him to get sacked twice, hurried seven times and hit another six.  And the poor play resonated with both head coach Bill Belichick and offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien who both took time to rip into the entire offense at one point in the second quarter.

Detroit got on the board first with a 33-yard field goal by Jason Hanson that was set up by a big pass play when Matthew Stafford connected with Nate Burleson for 32 yards.

On the next drive Stafford once again found Burleson this time for a 9-yard TD pass that capped a 4 play 57-yard drive and gave the Lions a 10-0 lead.

New England got on the board after a 16-play drive stalled in Lions territory when Stephen Gostkowski nailed a 33-yard field goal to cut the Detroit lead to 10-3 at the start of the second quarter.

With New England’s struggling, Detroit stepped it up on both sides of the ball.  Stafford led the Lions on yet another quick hit drive that was only 3 plays going 51-yards it was capped off by a quick slant 22-yard TD pass to Tony Scheffler to give Detroit a 17-3 lead.

With under four minutes left in the half Brady hit Wes Welker on a 44-yard seem route in which the wide receiver was left all by himself running up field after the Detroit corner bit on a sweet play action fake.  That cut the Lions lead to 17-10 but that would be as close as New England would get for the rest of the evening.

Detroit though wasn’t done in just over the last minute before the half they would tack on 10 more points to head to locker room up 27-10.  They got a 46-yard field goal from Hanson to make it 20-10 and quickly got the ball back following an interception of Brady by Ricardo Silva.  They were able to quickly march down field behind back up quarterback Shaun Hill and get a touchdown with just seconds left before the break when Aaron Brown hauled in a 9-yard pass.

Brady and the first team started the second half but remained for just one series before being replaced by Brian Hoyer.

In the 3rd quarter the Lions looked to add more points but missed a field goal attempt and then 3rd string quarterback Drew Stanton threw an interception in the end zone to kill a second scoring drive.

In the 4th quarter Detroit went on it fourth and 2 and got a 4-yard TD pass from Stanton to Derrick Williams to push the lead to 34-10.

With about 6 minutes to play in the game the Patriots went for it on 4th and 5 inside the red zone and Hoyer failed to connect on a pass and they turned the ball over on downs.

Game Notes

The Patriots wore their road uniforms – white jerseys with navy pants.

The spread (Patriots minus 4) was not covered; the over/under (44) was a wash.

The Patriots are 101-128-1 all-time in preseason.  They are 41-32 in the preseason since Robert Kraft bought the team in 1994.

Bill Belichick is 38-30 overall in preseason and he is 27-21 with the Patriots.

New England is 2-5 vs. Detroit in the preseason including 1-4 as the road team.

This was the Patriots first preseason game at Ford Field.  The last preseason game in Detroit was at the Pontiac Silverdome.  The Patriots have played at Ford Field twice in the regular season.

The first preseason match up between these teams was on August 25, 1969 in Montreal, Canada.  The Lions won 22-9 in the exhibition game played at Jarry Park in front of 8,212 fans.  Patriots broadcaster Gino Cappelletti played in the game kicking three field goals for all of the Patriots points.

The Lions won the toss and decided to receive.

OL Dan Connolly hurt his ankle return was questionable.

OT Matt Light played the 1st quarter it was his first game action since shoulder surgery.

Patriots took a lot of early penalties, some of which may have been phantom, and that cost them some field position.

The officiating crew was pretty inconsistent both in the penalties they called and the one’s they missed.

The New England offensive line did a fairly poor job of protecting Tom Brady in the first half.  Sebastian Vollmer, Rich Ohrnberger and Nate Solder all got burned good.

Lions QB Matt Stafford was 12 of 14 for 200 yards and 2 TD passes in a little under 1 half of play.

Brady started the second half.

Brady finished 12 for 22 for 145 yards 1 TD and 1 INT.

Detroit out gained New England 300-185 in yardage in the first half.

Wes Welker injured neck making a tackle on the Brady INT did not return

Jonathan Wilhite was injured on a coverage play in the 3rd quarter.

Julian Edelman suffered a hand injury in the 3rd quarter.

Here’s the transcript of Robert Kraft’s halftime interview on CBS.

Will Scandals Drive NCAA To Pay Athletes

NCAA

The term student-athlete is a joke.

I have had the privilege of knowing several scholarship athletes in different sports. When you are a scholarship athlete you are basically signing away your life for four years for a free education.  The things some of these young men and women go through for a free education are dumb.

Granted a free education is nice but the difference between someone who gets an athletic scholarship and an educational scholarship or a grant is vastly different.  Someone who has an educational scholarship is a regular college student.

Student-athlete’s I believe truly don’t get the full college experience and they’re missing out on a major life event while pumping millions of dollars into the university kitty.

Regular students attend their classes, live in their dorms, study for their finals and get to partake in and enjoy college life.  They can go out with classmates at the end of the day to get something to eat or watch one of their schools teams play.  They can go on a date with a fellow student, and on that date the pair can decide who is paying and how they’re paying.  Then can take a job to earn money to so those things.  Try that if you’re a “student-athlete”.

They can’t go with their friends and have them buy them a beer or burger or a pizza.  It’s against the rules.

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Have you ever wondered why you see the female athletes and the male athletes dating each other and not really dating a “regular” student?  That’s because only another college athlete can truly understand what it’s like to be a college athlete.  The demands on their time, the stress they go through.

Sure these kids, get free clothes that they can’t keep, at the bigger schools they stay in nice hotels, eat at decent restaurants and fly on charter flights.  But is it all worth it?

I have seen these college students have to study for final exams on locker room floors, hotel rooms and in conference rooms.  I have seen them spend holidays away from their families, get a four day Christmas vacation while other students get a month and never go on spring break.

I’ve known many college athletes who have chosen to go to school far from home for a number of reasons but most times they fall into a few categories.  They always wanted to go to that school.  Maybe the school of their choice has a big time program so they’ll get to be seen by having games televised.  Some chose a certain school because they may have a chance at a career as a professional athlete and they know that schools exposure will help them get there. And in some cases that school 800 or 1,000 miles from home may have been their only scholarship offer.

Money money moneyAnd people wonder why these young men and women chose to break the rules like the football players at the University of Miami or Ohio State University are accused of.  Taking money from boosters, getting taken to clubs, having hookers paid for, selling their personal memorabilia like jersey’s and Bowl rings or those trading items for other products or services, like tattoos.  It’s not hard to figure out.

They aren’t allowed to take anything.  Food, cash, items; even a ride could potentially be a NCAA violation.  Yet all the while the school is making money off their backs.  They’re selling tickets for premium prices to football and basketball and Bowl games.  They sell replica jerseys with the kid’s number and the athlete gets zero.

How many Maya Moore #23 jerseys and shirts do you think UConn sold the last four years?  How many #5 Reggie Bush shirts do you think USC sold earlier this decade?  Or how many #2 Terrelle Pryor jersey’s are on the backs of kids in Big Ten country?

It’s wrong that the university gets to expose the athlete and use them for four years.  The school can even use their likeness to sell tickets to future sporting events like season ticket sales but the athlete isn’t allowed to sell their own image or likeness for gain.  That’s why there’s no Andrew Luck Nike ads, Austin Rivers Gatorade spots or Chris Kreider Under Armor commercials.

As a photographer I am prohibited from selling the photos from NCAA events to people for personal use.  So technically if Player A’s parents, who I know personally, say “I love that shot of Player A can I buy an 8×10?”  I have to tell them no.  I am not even allowed to make money off a student athlete because it could jeopardize their eligibility to play their sport.

While the institutions continue to get rich off the back of the college athletes, the athletes themselves don’t have $5 in their pocket to go Subway. It’s really very sad and truly a joke.

The worst part of this entire saga is the NCAA themselves.  They make up these absurd rules that are written on mountains of paper and expect the institutions, its employees, boosters, students, athletes and anyone who comes in connection with them to obey them.

It truly is time for change in the way student-athletes are compensated for their education and time.  There has to be some fair, logical solution to be able to pay scholarship athletes evenly across the board, from school to school, from conference to conference, from revenue generating sports to non-revenue generating sports.  Maybe we need Robert Kraft and Jeff Saturday to figure this crap out because no one else seems to be able to.

Why can’t a student-athlete receive a scholarship, funds for books, room and board or a housing allowance, meals and get some piece of the athletic department pie? I’m not saying pay a kid $20 grand to play football at Florida, Alabama or USC or basketball at Duke, Georgetown or UConn.  But why can’t every student athlete be paid $2,000 per season for walking around money.  Granted it’s not a lot but it will allow them to be a college student or some semblance of one.

The rules on other things need to soften as well.  The student-athletes should be allowed to share a ride home from someone or be able to accept a meal.  I still feel there needs to be limits like no cars, no trips, no gambling etc. It is possible to live a normal life under normal rules and conditions and be a student athlete.  In the wake of these current scandals it’s proof something needs to be done and it’s time for the NCAA to take a bold step and start looking into it.

In The Red Zone – 8/23

In The Red Zone

The team is preparing for its nationally televised game Saturday in Detroit against the Lions.  The Patriots played the Lions last year on Thanksgiving Day and after a close first half turned it into a huge blow out winning 45-24 at Ford Field.

Tom Brady was 21 of 27 for 349 yards and 4 TD passes.  BenJarvus Green-Ellis ran for 59 yards and 2 TD’s, Deion Branch had 113 yards receiving and 2 TD catches and Wes Welker had 90 yards receiving and 2 TD catches.  While rookie CB Devin McCourty had 2 interceptions in the win.

I hope we get to see Lions QB Matt Stafford during the game, he missed most of last season with a shoulder injury and didn’t play in the game against New England. Stafford was the #1 overall pick in the 2009 draft out of Georgia.  He became the first rookie QB to start the season for the Lions since Greg Landry in 1968.

The Lions after taking Ndamukong Suh out of Nebraska in the first round in 2010, took Nick Fairley out of Auburn in the first round in 2011.  They should team up for years to come to form the base of a very good defensive line in Detroit.

Suh had a great rookie year winning NFL AP Defensive Rookie of the Year as he registered 66 tackles, 10 sacks, forced 1 fumble and had 1 interception in his first season.  He also made the Pro Bowl and was selected as a first team All-Pro.

The Lions are hoping Fairley is nearly as productive in his first season as Suh was.

With the game nationally televised on CBS, Patriots fans within the broadcast domain of the Patriots Preseason Television will not be tortured this week by Don Criqui and Randy Cross.  Criqui, was once considered among the finest play by play men in the business, is not quite up to speed on things as they happen any longer.

I thought we would see the top CBS announcing team this week but we’re getting the 2nd team of Greg Gumbel, Dan Dierdorf and Leslie Visser for the game.

On Sunday the Patriots signed TE Garrett Mills.  Mills was originally a 4th round pick by the club in 2006 out of Tulsa and he spent his rookie year mostly on IR.  In 2007 they tried to sneak him through waivers to put him on the practice squad but Minnesota claimed him.  In retaliation the Patriots claimed a Vikings player, LB David Herron off the waiver wire. Now he has returned to add more depth at tight end, a position that may only get three roster spots, now has five players but he is practice squad eligible.  He has also has spent time with Philadelphia and Cincinnati.

In return the team announced that OL Zach Roth and LB Bret Lockett were released.  It was reported just a few days ago that Lockett tore his groin and abdomen on Thursday. The Boston Herald’s Rap Sheet blog is reporting that he would have to clear waivers to be placed on IR but there’s no explanation as to why that is.

Roth had gotten hurt and was carted off in his first practice with the team but he returned a few days later. Roth was just unlikely to make the team.

New England head coach Bill Belichick was on WEEI’s Patriots Monday take a listen to the conversation with the Big Show.

Patriots quarterback and reigning NFL MVP Tom Brady also was on Patriots Monday with Dennis & Callahan on WEEI Monday morning.

If you don’t want to listen to the entire radio interview here’s some links to a few of the things Brady talked about.

Brady talks Belichick, Ochocinco and paparazzi.

Brady likes the look of the aggressive defense.

The Boston Globe’s Amalie Benjamin wrote a wonderful piece about Albert Haynesworth’s history and the people who support him.

Now that Haynesworth has pleaded no contest to a simple assault charge, it’s up to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to decide if there will be any type of further punishment by the league for Haynesworth’s actions.

The Globe’s Shalise Manza Young tell us that when Kyle Love was at Mississippi State they called him “Mini-V” as in Mini Vince Wilfork.

Jerod Mayo is going to be running wild, wreaking havoc on opponents.

The Herald’s Karen Guregian wonders if being named in the University of Miami scandal will affect Vince Wilfork.

Guregian noted on Sunday that she saw LB Dane Fletcher at Gillette Stadium and his right hand (thumb) that he injured Thursday night was in a cast.

Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald has video of newly signed S James Ihedigbo.

Rapoport gives us a look at the pager that NFL referees will use to confirm each and every touchdown this season.  It’s via a NBC screen shot.

ESPN’s Mike Reiss says when it comes to the defensive line, for the Pats, the richer the better.

Reiss tells us that NBC honored Myra Kraft, the late wife of Patriots owner Robert Kraft, during its Sunday Night Football telecast this weekend.

Yahoo’s Michael Silver writes about Robert Kraft having had an emotional summer.

Devin McCourty will line up once again against Lion’s WR Calvin Johnson.  The last time out McCourty had a pair of picks including one while covering the big Detroit receiver.

WR Taylor Price and rookie CB Ras-I Dowling were back at the full pads practice on Monday after some injuries.  Also back were WR Julian Edelman, WR Brandon Tate, DL Shaun Ellis and S James Sanders.

Vince Wilfork doesn’t want to be a distraction when it comes to the scandal at “The U”.

Haynesworth Enters Into Plea Bargain

New England Patriots NFL football defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth arrives at D.C. Superior Court in Washington, Monday, Aug. 22, 2011. Haynesworth was due in court the day before the scheduled start of a misdemeanor sexual abuse trial.

According to the Washington Post, New England Patriots defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth pled no contest to one count of simple assault today, one day before he was scheduled to go on trial for misdemeanor sexual assault.

As part of the plea agreement, Haynesworth agreed to an alcohol abuse assessment as well as a psychological assessment.  He also has to stay away from the alleged victim and perform community service.  If he completes this in 18 months, his record will be cleared.

Haynesworth was accused of touching a waitress on February 13 at the W Hotel in Washington D.C. when he is alleged to have swiped his credit card between her breasts and fondled her.  Haynesworth plead not guilty to the original charges.

Notes From Patriots Camp – 8/20

In The Red Zone

Saturday was the final day of Patriots training camp and tomorrow the team will revert to a regular weekly schedule for the last two weeks of the preseason as they ramp up for their Week 1 match up in Miami against the Dolphins on Monday Night Football.

Owner Robert Kraft was at practice today and he once again mingled with the players and staff.  He was seen talking with Albert Haynesworth towards the end of the session.

Haynesworth, who made an appearance at the light walk through like practice, did not participate in any drills or conditioning runs.  He spent much of the time standing with head coach Bill Belichick who said after practice that the defensive lineman remains “day to day.  He’s been day to day, he’s still day to day.  When he’s ready, he’ll be out there.”

DL Shaun Ellis also watched practice today and participated in the stretching and running.  Belichick said he is officially off the PUP list and eligible to practice with the team.  After the session, Ellis said he felt good and there wasn’t anything that took him by surprise saying, “ I was born into this family with (Bill) Parcells and being drafted by him, going through that period my rookie year, and then going through it with (Eric) Mangini.”

Also dressed and on the field for the last training camp session were Julian Edelman, Brandon Tate and James Sanders.

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

There is no update on the status of RB Danny Woodhead or LB Dane Fletcher, both sustained injuries during Thursday’s game in Tampa Bay.  Fletcher hurt his thumb on the second play of the game and did not return.  Woodhead got popped while covering a Zoltan Mesko punt in the 4th quarter and appears to have suffered a head injury; he did not return either.

It is being reported that DB Bret Lockett who was carted off the field on Thursday night has a torn groin and abdomen and is done for the season and will be placed on IR.  This is similar to the injury Nomar Garciaparra suffered with the Cubs in 2005.

Among those not seen on the field were rookie RB Stevan Ridley, rookie RB Shane Vereen, WR Taylor Price, CB Leigh Bodden, CB Darius Butler, LB Brandon Spikes, LB Jermaine Cunningham, DL Ron Brace and DE Mike Wright.

RB Kevin Faulk and rookie CB Ras-I Dowling were observers.

As we noted in earlier posts in the last 24 hours the team has signed former New York Jets S James Ihedigbo and former Oakland Raiders LB Ricky Brown.  Both players were at practice on Saturday.

The Patriots were one of 17 teams watching former Ohio State QB Terrell Pryor work out at his pro day today at a Pittsburgh PA area high school.  The other teams were reportedly Pittsburgh, Washington, New Orleans, Tampa Bay, Dallas, San Diego, Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, Philadelphia, Oakland, Miami, Cincinnati, Buffalo, Kansas City and San Francisco.  Also present were Colts president Jim Irsay, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin and former Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel.

The teams that have been rumored to have interest in Pryor are Oakland, Buffalo, Miami and Cincinnati.

With the closing of training camp there will no longer be an practice sessions open to the public.

The team has tomorrow off and the players return for a regular week on Monday.  Sox & Dawgs thanks you for following us during training camp and we will have a more regular weekly schedule for Patriots information.

As of now the plan is to publish an “In The Red Zone” feature with lots of notes and links those will generally run on Tuesday.

On Friday we will publish our information packed game preview.  The game previews include team breakdowns, depth charts, rosters, injury reports and game notes for the Patriots and their opponent.  It also has the Vegas line, a getting to the game section, a tailgating section, how to find tickets, radio and television broadcast information and the history of the series between the two teams.

Then following each game we will have a game report that includes a look at the game, the stats, a game recap from the mainstream media, turning point of the game, defensive and offensive players of the game and lots of game notes.

Plus during the week we will also have any breaking news regarding the team as it happens.

Ian and I hope you enjoy the Patriots season and that you get your information here from us at Sox & Dawgs.

Patriots Sign Ricky Brown

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Charlie Whitehurst, left, is tackled by Oakland Raiders linebacker Ricky Brown (57) while scrambling in the first quarter of an NFL preseason football game in Oakland, Calif. , Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010.

On Saturday morning, the New England Patriots added some depth to their linebacking corps by signing free agent Ricky Brown.

Brown, a 27 year old from Cincinnati, played his college football at Boston College.  An undrafted free agent in 2006 he signed with the Oakland Raiders where he had played his entire career.

The 6’2″ 235 pound Brown is expected to add some more depth to the Patriots defense and special teams.

Notes From Patriots Camp – 8/19

In The Red Zone

Well the day after the game was kind of busy as the New England Patriots reportedly worked out WR Mark Clayton, former Washington and Denver RB Clinton Portis and former Oakland and Boston College LB Ricky Brown today.  There is no word yet if any of the players were offered a contract with the club but word is that Portis showed up seriously out of shape and that was after losing 25 pounds the last two weeks.

Also this afternoon free agent S James Ihedigbo has reportedly signed with the team per his Twitter account.  The Northampton MA native and UMass product signed with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent in 2007 and played with them through last season.  He is seen as a back up safety and a special teams player and will basically replace Bret Lockett who got hurt in the game on Thursday.  He adds depth to safety, which the team has been searching for the last few weeks. Oh and yes he grew up a Patriots fan.

The team also announced that undrafted free agent LB Christian Cox, a rookie out of Utah, has been placed on the season ending IR with a neck injury.

The Patriots will hold their last open to public training camp session tomorrow at the training field outside Gillette Stadium.  The practice will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. and the Patriots experience will be from noon to 4 p.m. For all the latest training camp information go to patriots.com/trainingcamp or call 508.549.0041.

Head coach Bill Belichick had his day after post mortem conference call.  A few of the nuggets from it include talk about the offense in the red zone.  “ Overall we had a pretty good night in the red area and on third down.  I think the score is a little bit deceiving I think in the first half we still made a lot of…there’s a lot of things we need to do better.  In the second half, I think there were a lot of good things out there but a lot of those were negated by a few bad things.”

“The first half probably wasn’t quite as good as it looked the second half probably wasn’t quite as bad as it looked.”

On the pressure on the Tampa Bay quarterbacks he said that, “They had about three different groups on the offensive line.  A couple times, when we pressured, it looked like they just had a breakdown in the assignments.  They just didn’t block a guy.”

On the injuries to Lockett and Danny Woodhead and whether they would miss any significant time Belichick said, “No, I don’t have any updates.”

One NFL executive said at half time last night, “That was one of the biggest beatdowns I’ve ever seen in a preseason game. Yeah they’re pretty good.” Another executive for a NFL team said, “If they stay healthy they’re going to be tough to handle, absolutely.  They’re better right now than they were last season.”

If you could see the grin on my face right now.

This team is deep, scary deep.  At most nearly every position, the second and third team players could be starters on a lot of other teams.  And this is a team that has not only overhauled nearly the entire defensive line but they’ve basically switched from a 3-4 base defense to a 4-3 base defense and have done it seamlessly.

Oh and I noted in the game recap last night defensive end Andre Carter was virtually unblockable and because of that there’s a really good linebacker named Jerod Mayo who was able to run wild.  I mean “bitches be running wild”, kind of wild.  Mayo’s line from last night while playing the Will (weak side) linebacker were 5 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 quarterback hurries and 3 passes defensed.  And that was pretty much just the first half.  That folks is Andre Tippett-like.

Patriots Crush Bucs, 31-14

New England Patriots wide receiver Chad Ochocinco (85) gets congratulations from teammates including Aaron Hernandez, right, after his first quarter touchdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during an NFL preseason football game Thursday, Aug. 18, 2011 in Tampa, Fla.

Some much for lines on preseason games huh?  This one was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers giving two points to the New England Patriots.  The only problem was New England didn’t need them as they scored plenty of their own in their Preseason Week 2 win 31-14 over Tampa Bay at Raymond James Stadium.

Most of the starters played in the first half including reigning MVP Tom Brady who threw a pair of TD passes, one each to Aaron Hernandez (16 yards) and Chad Ochocinco (8 yards).  BenJarvus Green-Ellis ran for a pair of one-yard TD’s and Jerod Mayo who played on the outside had a pair of 1st half sacks, both on the blitz.

Hernandez had 3 catches on the night for 42 yards and a TD, Wes Welker grabbed 5 for 56 yards and Ochocinco had a pair of catches for 14 yards and 1 TD.

Danny Woodhead had a big 1st half as well rushing 5 times for 63 yards with runs of 29, 14 and 12 yards.  Green-Ellis ran the ball 11 times for 51 yards and the two scores.

New England outgained Tampa Bay in the air (124-79) and on the ground (117-8) and outscored them in the half 28-0.

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Tampa Bay QB’s were under a lot of defensive pressure the entire half and Andre Carter who was pretty much unblockable created a lot of it.

Not all was good for the Patriots in the first half as LB Dane Fletcher got hurt on the second play of the game and did not return with a thumb injury.  DB Bret Lockett hurt his thigh or groin and was carted off the field after covering a Zoltan Mesko punt.

In the third quarter rookie Ryan Mallett replaced Brady, who was 11 for 19 for 118 yards and 2 TD’s, and he promptly threw a pick 6 to DB Elbert Mack who went 69 yards for the TD to cut the New England lead to 28-7.  Mallett even got leveled on the play.

Mallett was off all night, even his completions they weren’t sharp but the coaching staff wanted to see how he would respond to a tough situation.  And they were able to do that Thursday night. Mallett finished the night 9 of 14 for 71 yards and 1 INT.

Rookie RB Stevan Ridley, who last week had three TD’s, lost a fumble, but other than he had a good performance rushing for 84 yards on 14 carries.

Late in the 3rd quarter Stephen Gostkowski converted on a 51-yard field goal to make it 31-7 and close out the scoring for New England.  It was his 3rd made field goal of the preseason all from more than 40 yards.

Brian Hoyer saw limited time at QB playing two plays in the first half, relieving Brady and then temporarily relieving Mallett in the 3rd and coming back in for a bit at the end of the game.

The Bucs cut the lead to 31-14 with 9:28 to play when they mounted an 84 yard, 12 play drive that was capped by an Allen Bradford TD run of 2 yards.

Woodhead was returning punts in the second half in the 4th quarter he got lit up pretty good by Devin Holland and he was wobbly coming off the field.  The team trainers took his helmet from him and he didn’t see any further action on the night.

Defensive New England was very good all night.  CB Kyle Arrington had an interception and 3 tackles, newly acquired LB Niko Koutouvides had a sack and 3 tackles, Mayo had a pair of sacks and 5 tackles and LB Tracy White had 5 tackles.

As a team the Patriots were 8 of 16 on 3rd down and 0 for 1 on 4th.  The three quarterbacks combined for 21 of 37 for 183 yards, 2 TD’s, 1 INT and 2 sacks. The team rushed for 200 yards on 36 carries, last season they ran for 200 yards twice in 16 games both against Buffalo.

Next week the Patriots play in Detroit when they take on the Lions on Saturday at 8 p.m. during a nationally televised game on CBS.
