Patriots Sign Martin and Huggins

New York Giants defensive back Derrick Martin (36) pulls away from New England Patriots tight end Carson Butler en route to a touchdown after a fumble recovery during the fourth quarter of a preseason NFL football game in Foxborough, Mass. , Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011.

No it’s not a comedy team but the New England Patriots have signed defensive back Derrick Martin and running back Kareen Huggins to contracts.

Martin, a safety from Denver, CO, played his college ball at the University of Wyoming and was a sixth round pick of the Baltimore Ravens in the 2006 NFL Draft.  He was traded to Green Bay in 2009 and earned a Super Bowl Ring in 2010 with the Packers despite being on the injured reserve list since October.  In 2011 he played with the New York Giants and was on his second consecutive Super Bowl championship team.

Huggins is a full back from Irvington, NJ who played his college football with Patriots CB Kyle Arrington at Hofstra.  He signed with Tampa Bay in 2009 as an undrafted free agent and after two seasons with the Buccaneers. he did not play last season.

UPDATE 8/5: Huggins was released by the Patriots on Sunday morning.

Patriots OL Robert Gallery Retires; Fiametta Put on Exempt List

New England Patriots offensive lineman Robert Gallery has decided to retire during training camp.  According to reports, he was not able to play the way he expected to and retired due to the overall wear and tear on his body.

New England Patriots tackle Robert Gallery (72) takes a knee during an NFL football training camp in Foxborough, Mass. , Sunday, July 29, 2012.Gallery, who played tackle and guard, was the first round pick (2nd overall) of the Oakland Raiders in the 2004 NFL Draft out of Iowa.  After 7 seasons in Oakland, he left as a free agent in 2011 for a 3-year deal in Seattle but he was released just days before signing with New England this offseason.

It was hoped that Gallery would provide the team with some additional offensive line help especially while G Logan Mankins is recovering from offseason ACL surgery.

Now it’s expected that former UConn standout Donald Thomas, Ryan Wendell and possibly Nick McDonald will see more time at the guard position.

The team also announced that FB Tony Fiametta, a free agent pick up from the Dallas Cowboys has been placed on the exempt/left squad list and has the left the team for unspecified reason.

Fiammetta, a 6 foot 4, 242 pound fullback went to college at Syracuse and is a former fourth round draft pick of the Carolina Panthers.

Where Does Tito Land

As we get closer and closer to the non waiver trade deadline and teams start to fight for better position or begin to drop off you have to wonder which managers will survive the season and return to their club in 2013.

Terry Francona managerial desitnationsWith that in mind former Boston manager Terry Francona, after a year in the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball booth is expected to be highly coveted.  So where does Tito land?

In the American League East it looks as all five skippers will be safe and will return to their clubs.

In the AL Central it appears to be a different story as two teams could look for new dugout leaders for 2013.  You have to wonder how safe Ron Gardenhire is in Minnesota.  The Twins are suffering through another awful season but their history has shown the front office to be more than patient with the manager.

In Gardenhire’s case he is not only a long time manager, since 2002, but he was a coach on Tom Kelly’s staff from 1991 and replaced him when he retired after the 2001 season.  He is under contract through the 2013 season and after 11 seasons he may have had enough to even walk away on his own.  Gardenhire will be 55 in October and maybe a year off or moving to the front office may rejuvenate him.

The other Central team that could be looking is Kansas City.  Ned Yost, 56, has been there since 2010 after a tumultuous ending to his 6-year tenure as skipper of the Milwaukee Brewers in 2008 when he was fired by the team with two weeks to go in the season and the club in the heat of the pennant race.  That Brewers club did make the playoffs under interim manager Dale Sveum.

Right now the Yost is also signed through the 2013 season but the Royals are nearly 20 games under .500 and have a sub .500 record since he took over for Trey Hillman.

In the AL West one club that could be looking at a change is the Seattle Mariners.  Currently Eric Wedge, a former Red Sox farmhand and Cleveland Indians manager, is their skipper.  Wedge, 44, had success in Cleveland before the team was broken apart with trades of star players and impending free agency.  He won the 2007 AL Manager of the Year in taking Cleveland to the ALCS before blowing a 3-1 series lead and losing to Boston in 7 games.

After 7 seasons in Cleveland he was let go and after a year off he took over in Seattle in 2011.  In his first season the team went 67-95 (.414) and this year at the July trade deadline the Mariners are 10 games under .500 and 14 games behind the division leader.

As of late the Seattle ownership has been less then lenient with managers having gone through Daren Brown (2010), Don Wakamatsu (2009-10), Jim Riggelman (2008), John McLaren (2007-08), Mike Hargrove (2005-07) and Bob Melvin (2003-04) since the 10 year tenure of Lou Piniella.  So you have to wonder where Wedge’s status sits in the eyes of the ownership.

Wedge reportedly got a three-year deal when he was hired so he is under contract through 2013.

In the National League East I’d say at this time only Charlie Manuel may be on the hot seat with the Philadelphia Phillies dropping off so far and so fast this season.  He has had to cope with many injuries and that may buy him another year but for all the high priced talent on the club it hasn’t looked good.  In fact it appears at this time the team is in sell mode as they are reportedly shopping SS Jimmy Rollins, RF Hunter Pence and SP Cliff Lee.

Manuel, 68, has been the Phillies manager since 2005 after having managed the Cleveland Indians for 2 and half seasons before he was eventually replaced by Wedge that offseason.  In Philadelphia, Manuel has had much more success that he did in Cleveland leading the Phils to a World Series title in 2008 and back to the Fall Classic in 2009, losing to the New York Yankees.

Manuel was on the hot seat at least once in his Philly tenure back entering the 2008 season it was seen as do or die and after a slow start the team produced the World Series championship and saved his job.

In addition over the years Manuel has had many severe health problems including kidney cancer, a blocked colon, a heart attack and triple bypass surgery.  He is under contract through the 2013 season.

While in the Nations Capital, the Washington Nationals are leading the division behind 69 year old Davey Johnson.  There are no indications that the Nats would get rid of Johnson or that Johnson would retire but given his age, along with Manuel’s, retirement is a distinct possibility.

Johnson took over part way into 2011 after an 11-year absence from a major league dugout.  Johnson has managed in many places over the years including Los Angeles, Baltimore, Cincinnati and New York where he won the 1986 World Series with the Mets.  He is under contract to manage through the 2013 season.

Johnson could also hang around for another year knowing how good this team has been and how much better it may be in 2013.

In the NL Central St. Louis, Chicago, Pittsburgh and Milwaukee all would appear to be staying put in the dugout.  I think under no circumstances does Brad Mills return to the Houston Astros in 2013 when they move to the AL West.  Mills, a former Red Sox bench coach under Francona, is currently managing a poor team made up of Triple A and Double A players as the new general manager and ownership sell out any real players from under him.

Mills, 55, has been the Houston bench general since the start of the 2010 season and is highly respected in baseball circles.  This is his first managerial job at the major league level and you have to feel for him with the way the Houston organization has run all of it’s talent out of town in his tenure.

There have been several reports earlier this month that Mills will be relieved of his duties at the end of season.  He is in the final year of his contract and the team has an option for 2013.

Another NL Central club could be looking for a new skipper come 2013 and that’s the Cincinnati Reds.  Currently Dusty Baker, 63, is in the final season of his contract and the Reds have yet to approach him about next season even with the club in or near first place most of the season.

Baker is a long time MLB manager having lead the San Francisco Giants for 10 seasons and to a World Series berth in 2002.  He was also a three time NL Manager of the Year in his time with Giants.  After the World Series season he left the Giants and moved onto to the Chicago Cubs for four seasons before taking a year off working at ESPN.  He has been the Reds manager since 2008.

In the NL West the Colorado Rockies would be a team that could look to make a change.  After failing to meet expectations in 2011 and now again 2012 it looks as though it may be the end of the line for Jim Tracy in the Rocky Mountains as the team is 25 games under .500.

Tracy, 56, is in his fourth season as the Rockies skipper and won the NL Manager of the year in 2009 after replacing Clint Hurdle in May of that season.  He has also managed 5 seasons in Los Angeles and 2 seasons with Pittsburgh before his Colorado tenure.  His contract expires at the end of the season.

So where does this leave Francona?

It gives him some options that’s for sure.  In the American League it would give him Minnesota, Kansas City, Seattle and Houston.  While in the Senior Circuit there are potential openings in Philadelphia, Washington, Cincinnati and Colorado.

I’m not sure that Francona would be willing to go back to Philly after his first go around there wasn’t so great.  It was nothing like his tenure in Boston and Phillies fans threatened him and his family and even reportedly flattened the tires on his car in the stadium lot.

To me the places that make the most sense would be Minnesota, Washington and Cincinnati should they have openings.

Minnesota has always had talent and deep farm system with more behind it.  Even though they haven’t been so good their first two seasons at Target Field I would imagine help isn’t that far away.  Plus the front office has always been manager friendly having had only two managers since 1986.

Washington would be a great landing spot should Johnson retire or decide to go back to the front office spot he had before taking over.  The Nats have some incredible young talent in Bryce Harper and Stephen Strasburg and very good young pitching staff with some vets sprinkled in.  Francona would essentially be walking into a situation similar to what he had when he came to Boston in that he would have a good team ready to win when he got there.  The only difference is this one is full of young stars not aging ones.

And that leaves Cincinnati who has had a baseball rebirth the last few seasons with great everyday players in Jay Bruce, Brandon Phillips and Joey Votto.  Throw in the up and comers in Zack Cozart and Devin Mesoraco with a solid pitching staff that has Mat Latos, Johnny Cueto, veteran Bronson Arroyo and the Cuban Missile Crisis, Aroldis Chapman on the back end.  This team can easily contend for several seasons in the NL Central and for a World Series title in the process.

If I am Francona I want to punch my ticket for a team that is close to a title and can stay at that level for four or five seasons.  I wouldn’t be shocked to see Cincinnati not extend Baker in hopes of landing Francona.  And with Mills likely out of Houston at season’s end it potentially gives Tito his former bench coach back as he builds his staff.

So if you were Terry Francona which job(s) look(s) interesting to you?

Patriots Sign Shiancoe and Bulman, Release Addai

Minnesota Vikings tight end Visanthe Shiancoe (81) makes a reception in the first quarter of an NFL football game against the Minnesota Vikings in Detroit, on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011.

On Tuesday, just a day before players are scheduled for their first training camp exercises, the New England Patriots have signed veteran TE Visanthe Shiancoe (vi-sahn-TAY SHANK-oh).

Shiancoe, 32, a 3rd round pick of the New York Giants in the 2003 NFL Draft out of Morgan State was an unrestricted free agent.  In addition to the Giants where he played from 2003-2006, he has spent the last five years playing for the Minnesota Vikings where at one time he was a favorite target of former quarterback Brett Favre.

Shiancoe, who was born in England but grew up in Maryland, is expected supply additional depth against injury and is an exceptional blocker and solid pass catcher.  He also gives them several options in the no huddle with three tight ends on the field it create huge mismatches for Tom Brady to exploit.

His contract is for one season and is worth $1.2 million with $400,000 guaranteed.

The team also announced that it signed defensive lineman Tim Bulman, a native of Milton MA.

Bulman, 29, has played 7 seasons in the NFL with Arizona (2005) and Houston (2006-11) he was an undrafted free agent out of Boston College in 2005.

In order to make room on the roster, the Patriots released RB Joseph Addai, who they signed as a free agent in May after 6 seasons with the Indianapolis Colts.

Addai was a first round pick by Indianapolis in the 2006 NFL Draft out of LSU.

Cappelletti Retires from Patriots Radio Broadcast Booth

Gino Cappelletti

He is Mr. Patriot.  He has been a part of the franchise for 45 of its 52 years and now as we approach the 2012 NFL season Gino Cappelletti has decided it’s time to walk away and retire at age 78.

Cappelletti, a member of the Patriots Hall of Fame, is the 2nd leading scorer in Patriots franchise history and one of only 20 players to play in all 10 seasons of the AFL.  He was also named the 1964 AFL MVP.

After his playing days were over he joined the Patriots broadcast booth were he provided the color commentary for 32 NFL seasons (1972-78; 1988-present), 28 of them with long time broadcast partner Gil Santos.

Although nothing has been made official it is expected that former Patriots QB Scott Zolak will move from the sidelines to the booth to replace Cappelletti.  Zolak joined the broadcast team last season in an effort to help ease the pace of the game on Cappelletti, who had a tough time keeping up with the pace of the game the last several seasons.

It is expected at this time that Santos will return to call the Patriots play-by-play for his 22nd consecutive season and his 36th year overall (1966-79; 1991-present).

Patriots: Five Rookies Fail Physicals, One Released

When the rookies reported to Gillette Stadium earlier this week they were subjected to their team physical and five of the 1st year players failed according to the team.

New England PatriotsFailing the physical on Thursday were WR Jeremy Ebert, WR Matt Roark, DE Justin Francis, OL Jeremiah Warren and OL Markus Zusevics.

Ebert was placed on the Active/PUP list as he is still suffering from a leg injury suffered during minicamp.

The others were placed on the Active/Non-Football injury list.  Players can be removed from those lists at anytime prior to the start of the season.

On Friday the team decided to release Roark, who was a long shot to begin with.  There is no word if the failed physical resulted in the release or if the player asked to be released.

A Look at the Red Sox First Half

Manager Bobby Valentine #25 of the Boston Red Sox watches his team take batting practice prior to the game against the New York Yankees on July 8, 2012 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts.

we are in the 2012 Major League Baseball All-Star break, I figured it would be a good time to take a look at Boston Red Sox and their performance by the numbers in through the first 86 games of the season.

As we now the team sits at .500 a mere 43-43 at the break with a sub .500 home record of 22-24 at Fenway Park, while on the road they are 21-19.

So what are the teams issues.  Well first off it’s injuries.  We all know they’ve had 20 different players make a total of 23 trips to the disabled list.  So far we have yet to even see LF Carl Crawford, P John Lackey and closer Andrew Bailey, while we only saw a small sample of 7 games of 2011 AL MVP runner up Jacoby Ellsbury.  Couple that with DL trips by Daisuke Matsuzaka, Clay Buchholz, Josh Beckett, Dustin Pedroia, Cody Ross, Ryan Sweeney, Scott Podsednik and about a dozen games lost for 3B Will Middlebrooks it’s been a very difficult first half for first year manager Bobby Valentine.

How important exactly is Ellsbury to the Red Sox?  Well when you take into account the center fielders have hit a mere .243 with an on base percentage of .279 and a slugging percentage of .325 with 12 doubles, 1 triple, 4 HR and 30 RBI it’s not hard to see why the offense has sputtered.

Meanwhile out of Ellsbury’s lead off spot the team has generated 24 doubles, no triples, 9 HR and 52 RBI while the leadoff hitters have just hit .258 with a .309 OBP and SLG of .397.  Compared to even Ellsbury’s career numbers which are .299 BA .354 OBP and .450 SLG that is a significant drop off in production.  When you put up his remarkable 2011 season of .321 BA with a .376 OBP and .552 SLG with 32 HR and 105 RBI you can see why the team has dropped off.

Then add in no Crawford, an oft injured Pedroia, who is hitting a mere .266 with an OBP of .326 and a .400 SLG with 19 doubles, 2 triples, 6 HR and 33 RBI, and a powerless Adrian Gonzalez that’s about all you need to know regarding the Boston offense in the first half of 2012.

While the bullpen has very good since mid to late April the starting staff has been a major concern.  Matsuzaka returned from Tommy John surgery and to me it seemed like he was rushed to help fill a rotation hole, and he has been well what he has always been.  He has made five starts he is 0-3, he averages just 80 pitches per game and has a WHIP of 1.35 and a 6.65 ERA.

To continue reading, please click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

The two “aces” of the staff have been non-existent.  Josh Beckett, when not on the golf course, is 4-7 with a 1.20 WHIP and a 4.43 ERA and Jon Lester is 5-6 with a 1.35 WHIP and a 4.49 ERA.  No where near what you need or expect from the two big guns in the rotation of a team expected to contend for a World Series title.

Clay Buchholz at times looks like he is about to find himself and to his credit before his latest DL sting, he pitched well overall he is 8-2 but a rough start to the year has elevated his WHIP to 1.54 and his ERA to 5.53.

Then there’s the case of Felix Doubront, who at times has been the teams best starter, but at 24 years of age is severely overmatched as a MLB starter at this time.  Doubront would have been better served to have had this year in the bullpen or at worse the first half season in Pawtucket with a midseason call up.  Valentine and pitching coach Bob McClure were really kind of forced to use this kid in the rotation after Bailey came up lame near the end of spring training.  That took Aceves out of the running for a starting spot and put Valentine in the position of going with two unknown starters in Doubront and Daniel Bard, who is a whole entire post on his own.

Doubront, while being the recipient of the most run support in the majors has a 9-4 record and leads the team in wins but has a WHIP of 1.38 and a 4.41 ERA.  He has made 17 starts and pitched 96 innings, which means he doesn’t even make it through 6 innings and yet throws an average of 98 pitches per start.

It’s a bit unfair to be hard on Doubront when he has the best starter ERA on the team that features some historically good pitchers but what he does need is to be more efficient with his pitches.  He consistently has 50+ pitches thrown in the first three innings and it leads to very early exits.  Luckily for “Doubie” the bullpen has done a wonderful job in picking him up.

So what is in store for this team in the second half of 2012?  Well first they need to get healthy and that starts this weekend with the return of Middlebrooks, Buchholz and Ellsbury.  Shortly after that Pedroia will be back and so will Crawford and hopefully by the last 25-30 games we will finally have Bailey in the pen and hold your breath but the target return for Lackey is September as well.

After they get healthy then they need to play to their capabilities.  It’s hard to be upset with Valentine when he has been forced to play a lineup of castoffs and Triple A players but I guess it’s remarkable that the team is at .500 and still in striking distance of an American League playoff berth.
