One of the Big East’s premier football schools, the West Virginia Mountaineers, will be looking for a new head coach as Rich Rodriguez has decided to take the gig at Michigan.
The Wolverines have been without a head coach since the Monday after their loss to Ohio State when Lloyd Carr decided to retire. They had tried to hire Les Miles away from LSU and Greg Schiano from Rutgers. Most recently, UConn’s head coach Randy Edsall had been rumored to be a candidate for the job as well.
The big question that lies ahead for Michigan is will Rodriguez bring his vaunted spread-option offense to Ann Arbor. He is a master of that offense and led the Mountaineers to 60-26 record in 7 years, including three straight 10-win seasons and two trips to BCS Bowls.
The Mountaineers were ranked #2 in the nation and had a chance to play in the BCS National Championship game with a win over Pittsburgh but the Panthers pulled off an upset and cost West Virginia a trip to New Orleans. Instead they will head to Phoenix to play in the Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma.
It’s not known yet whether or not Rodriguez will coach the Moutaineers in the Fiesta Bowl. Carr will coach his final game for the Wolverines in the Capital One Bowl against Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow and the Florida Gators.
