Boomer and his big mouth

San Diego Padres pitcher David Wells was fined an additional $5,000 by commissioner Bud Selig for the comments he made regarding his 7-game suspension and $3,000 fine for being ejected during a game on July 7th. Wells is appealing the fine just as he is appealing the initial punishment. Wells wondered aloud why Selig, who is in town for the Barry Bonds homerun chase, couldn’t stop by to have a chat. Selig was unhappy with the comments Wells directed toward Bob Watson, baseball’s discipline czar. Wells went as far as to tape Watson’s letter to his locker so anyone could read it. He did the same with the letter he got from Selig regarding his latest fine as well. Boomers vision of Bob WatsonWells received the additional fine for referring to Watson as a ‘henchman and a yes man for Bud Selig”. “It is highly inappropriate to impugn the honesty, integrity and impartiality of the Office of the Commissioner and the umpires to the media under any circumstance,” Selig wrote. “Such actions are inflammatory and strike at the heart of the public confidence in the game of baseball. “I expect that you will refrain from making such derogatory comments about the Office of the Commissioner and its umpires in the future. In the event you engage in such misconduct again, the discipline will be much more severe.” Wells appeals won’t be heard until later this month when the Padres are in New York to play the Mets. Wells, in his 21st season, has pitched for Toronto, Detroit, Cincinnati, Baltimore, New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox and Boston in addition to San Diego.
