It’s the worst case scenario for the No. 1 UConn women’s basketball team as it was announced that freshman shooting guard Caroline Doty has suffered an ACL tear in her left knee and will be lost for the season. No date for her surgery has been announced.
Doty was injured on a fast break when she came to a jump stop when trying to catch a pass from Maya Moore. She immediately started to yell “my knee, my knee” and was laying down on the ground clutching it.
This is the same knee that she tore her ACL while playing soccer for Germantown Academy her senior year.
In 17 games (17 starts), Doty was averaging 8.6 points and 3.4 rebounds a game. She has hit 30-of-75 three-pointers (40%) and is shooting 86.7% (13-15) from the charity stripe. She has 33 assists on the season and has committed 20 turnovers.
She was on the way to one of her best games of the season scoring 17 points before the injury at the end of the first half.
With Doty out, UConn’s depth will take a hit. It’s thought that Kalana Greene will move to Doty’s spot, Moore to Greene’s spot and Kaili McLaren will step into the starting lineup. It will also create a lot more playing time for freshman Tiffany Hayes.
UConn faced this adversity last year when Greene and Mel Thomas went down with their ACL injuries. So if there is any team that can handle this, it’s the UConn women’s basketball team.
