Boston Red Sox infielder Jose Iglesias has been voted American League Rookie of the Month for June. He is the first Red Sox rookie to claim the award since teammate Jacoby Ellsbury in September 2007.
Iglesias batted .395 (34-for-86) with four doubles, two triples, one home run, six RBI, 17 runs scored and eight walks in 25 games, tallying 11 multi-hit contests during the period. Jose also enjoyed a career-best 18-game hitting streak from May 27th-June 18th in which he hit .422 (27-for-64) with five doubles, one homer, five RBI, nine runs scored and six walks over the stretch. Among qualifying A.L. rookies with a minimum of 81 plate appearances over the month, the 23-year-old was first in batting average, on-base percentage (.453), slugging percentage (.523), base hits and runs scored; third in games played; fourth in at-bats; and was sixth in doubles.
On June 1st, the right-handed-hitting Iglesias went 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored as the Red Sox topped the New York Yankees, 11-1, at Yankee Stadium. It was Jose's third straight two-hit performance. He followed that up with a homer in two plate appearances the next day in a rain-shortened 3-0 shutout over the Yanks to help the Sox take two-of-three in the A.L. East showdown. The Cuban native had a pair of hits in both ends of a doubleheader against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on June 8th at Fenway Park, helping Boston earn a split with the Halos, before taking the three-game set with a 10-5 win in the series finale on June 9th. Iglesias went 2-for-4 with a double in the series finale. Against the Detroit Tigers on June 21st, Jose tied a personal season-high with three hits in five trips to the plate, including a triple and two runs scored to lead the Red Sox to a 10-6 win at Comerica Park. On the 25th, Iglesias notched another three-hit outing, going 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored to guide the BoSox to an 11-4 win over the visiting Colorado Rockies.
Others receiving votes included David Lough (.322, 2 HR, 11 RBI) of the Kansas City Royals; Nick Franklin (.296, 2 HR, 13 RBI) of the Seattle Mariners; Alex Torres (1-0, 0.48 ERA, 28 SO) and Wil Myers (.296, 3 HR, 9 RBI) of the Tampa Bay Rays; Oswaldo Arcia (.328, 2 HR, 10 RBI) of the Minnesota Twins; and Jose Cisnero (1-1, 0.77 ERA, 14 SO) of the Houston Astros.
In recognition of his American League Rookie of the Month Award, Jose Iglesias will receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, for his accomplishment.
