Report: Red Sox To Sign Pierzynski

A.J. Pierzynski #12 of the Texas Rangers reacts after hitting a double against the Los Angeles Angels in the 5th inning at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington on September 29, 2013 in Arlington, Texas.

It looks like the player we all love to hate is joining the Boston Red Sox for the 2014 season.

According to multiple media reports, the Red Sox and free agent catcher A.J. Pierzynski have agreed to a one-year deal pending the outcome of a physical. No financial terms have been disclosed.

The news was first reported by Jon Heyman of

This obviously signals the end of the Jarrod Saltalamacchia era in Boston and it makes you wonder what the future for Ryan Lavarnway is as well.

The left-handed hitting Pierzynski spent the 2013 season with the Texas Rangers where he played in 134 games and hit .272 with 17 home runs and 70 RBIs. He could platoon behind the plate with David Ross, who hits right-handed.

Whether you like Pierzynski or not, he's part of the team now. As he long as he contributes to the team, I'm sure the angst will go away.

UPDATE: According to Buster Olney of ESPN, the deal is worth $8.25 million for the one year.
