Video: UConn Men Survive Against Maryland, 78-77

Shabazz Napier #13 of the Connecticut Huskies carries the ball upcourt during the second half against the Maryland Terrapins at Barclays Center on November 8, 2013 in the Brooklyn borough of New York City.

The way things were going for the UConn Huskies men's basketball team, it looked like they were going to blow the Maryland Terrapins out of the Barclays Center and back down 95.

Instead, Shabazz Napier's cockiness almost cost them.

With UConn up 17, Napier got a technical foul for boasting about a play. Then Maryland started their comeback.

Unfortunately for them it fell just short as UConn held off the Terrapins for a 78-77 win in the season opener for both teams.

Napier led the way for the Huskies with 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Niels Giffey added 13 points, including 3-of-3 from three point land. All of his points came in the first half. Omar Calhoun rounded out the Huskies in double digits with 10 points.

Nick Faust paced five Terrapins in double figures with 17 points. Evan Smotrycz, Jake Layman and Dez Wells all had 13 points with Smotrycz pulling down a game-high nine rebounds. Wells led the Terps with six assists. Charles Mitchell had 12 points in a losing cause.

Good win for the Huskies who showed they can do what it takes to win with adversity. Of course, you don't want to see that this early in the season.

But a win is a win and you know Kevin Ollie will get those mistakes corrected quickly before Monday's game against the Yale Bulldogs at the XL Center.
