Clay Buchholz Would Welcome A Trade

June 15th, 2009 by Ian · 7 Comments ·

From the sounds of this interview with NECN, Boston Red Sox farmhand Clay Buchholz would be open to being traded if he’s not able to help the big club.

Buchholz has been dominating down in Triple-A with the Pawtucket Red Sox. He has made 11 starts for the PawSox and is 4-0 with a 1.75 ERA. He has allowed only 49 hits, walked 15 and struck out 59 in 67 innings of work.

He’s been skipped over at least once this season when Daisuke Matsuzaka went on the DL. And with John Smoltz likely to join the Red Sox rotation this week, there isn’t any room for him on the roster.

I definitely don’t see the Red Sox rushing out to trade him. He’s still a valuable part of this organization and definitely a part of the plans for the future. The only way and only way I see him being traded is if the Red Sox can get something of equal or greater value in return and even then, they still might not move him.

His frustrations are definitely warranted though and it’s great to hear him speak his mind. Let’s hope his comments don’t bite him in the A$$ though.

By the way if you get NESN, you can catch Buchholz pitch tonight when he starts for the PawSox against the Charlotte Knights. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.

he wasnt skipped while dicek was down, he was hurt himself

Yes initially he was hurt but after that he could have been called up and wasn’t.

This is exactly what contracts were created for. He could be making huge money anywhere else but in Boston he continues in Triple-A.

They know how to work the contracts, years, etc and he knows he’s bound by it. I don’t see him going anywhere with Penny being the main trade bait at pitching that the Sox are more than willing to give up this year.

  • Yeah

I say trade while value is high. I said that before last year too. If he does pitch for Boston and implodes again no one will give anything worthwhile for him.

His trade value may be high but there’s no reason to trade him. By keeping him in the minors, they are limiting his MLB service time. When he comes up, he’ll have 2-3 years before being eligible for arbitration.

I don’t see Theo letting him go. He’s got way too much invested, financially and, even though Theo will never be accused of being sentimental about a player, personally, IMO. Clay was viewed as a risk because of his little computer caper, and he imploded last year, and Theo stuck with him. Now he’s come into his own; this what all that time and patience was for.

And it’s no accident that he was skipped over. They want to make sure that when they bring him up he’s good and ready.

I agree. I actually hope they don’t trade. What have you and I said all along. you can never have enough pitching depth.

I do wonder if he wants the trade to help a big league club out so he can get some cash. After all, he is getting married in 5 months.
