Report: Red Sox Tried To Get Hanley Ramirez From Marlins

December 29th, 2008 by Ian · 32 Comments ·

Hanley Ramirez back with the Red Sox?: No, not at all but according to Tom Verducci and Jon Heyman, the Boston Red Sox asked the Florida Marlins about shortstop Hanley Ramirez. They say the talks have ended after an agreement could not be reached.

The Marlins were said to be most interested in a center fielder, and discussions apparently centered on Boston’s promising youngster Jacoby Ellsbury, talented pitching prospect Clay Buchholz and others in a package for Ramirez, who began in Boston’s organization.

They should trade Bowden, Lars Anderson, and Clay Buccholz (1 hit wonder), and Lowrie. We need some type of offense at the SS position. Forget about what our offense could’ve been with Teix. Youk is an allstar 1B. and Hanley is a beast. Do it Theo!!!!

  • REDSOXSUCK

Hahaha fail, what a good deal this would have been for you guys. Too bad, we got Tex, CC, and Burnett. All you Red Sox just admit your reign at the top is coming to an end. Those 5 years you guys had were cute but now its time for the Evil Empire to Strike Back once again. Let’s face it anyone would rather play for the Yankees then the Red Sox unless they are complete scumbags which most of your players are.

  • yankeesoverpaid

Hey “Redsoxsuck” I hope the rest of the yankee fans aren’t as stupid as you are. If you look at Mark Teixeira’s stats, he isn’t that much better than Jason Bay (a 6 hitter in a red sox lineup!) who is getting paid 7 million. Mark will be the most overrated FA ever. He shouldn’t be making anywhere near Arod money. This is so freaking laughable. Think! Why were the Yankees not considered “front runners” for Mike. Then all of a sudden they grabbed him. It’s because Mark used both the Red Sox and Nationals to bring up the price until the Yankees bit the bullet the last minute! HAHAHA

  • Ian

Personally, I wouldn’t trade all that for Hanley Ramirez. While he’s a great hitting shortstop, why would you ever want to give up that much depth in your farm system for one player.

For redsoxsuck, I guess that makes Johnny Damon a scumbag too along with Kevin Cash. Also, your bullpen still isn’t better than the Red Sox by no means.

And for Yankeesoverpaid, you make a great point. The Red Sox will end up getting the same production from Bay as they would Teixeira.

  • brian

i think it is by far the funniest thing to ever hear this redsox suck guy talk. now that you have three free agents…burnett who gives the word injury its definition..cc who dominated in the NL… josh beckett deserved the cy over he did in 07..then teixiera..whom ranks along with youkillis and around the same age…and youk can be versitile too..cant say the same bout mark..so you guys can go spend all your money and get taxed and us redsox fans will sit and watch the yankees suffer the no show in the playoffs once again

  • TEXSUCKS

k “redsoxsuck” first you have to much money second burnett will get injired in spring training and third cc is only good in the national league so suck on tht. go sox

If the sox were to acquire Hanley, their offense would be right with the Bankees skill wise, and the Sox pitching is better. And where it really counts….Team Unity….the Sox might be a bunch of “scumbags” but they have class…. something the yankees besides Jeter need to get. The Yankees can spend all the money they want on overrated players while the scumbags sit back relax and play ball the way it should be, and watch the Yankees cry again about spending too much money on midlevel pitchers like they did for Carl Pavano and Jared Wright. My predictions for CC AJ and Tex are… CC- 12-9 4.55 ERA , AJ 8-9 5.45 ERA (elbow gets sore again) and Tex .310 25HR and 110 RBI…..all while scumbags like youk pedroia bay drew ortiz lowell match his stats

    • Ian

Tony you’ve made my point that I’ve been saying all along. The Red Sox have two things the Yankees don’t. That’s heart and chemistry.

We’ve seen all along that the Yankees spending money hasn’t bought them a championship. I don’t think it does this time either.

The Yankees might have all that talent on the field but their bullpen is still shaky in my opinion. As I said, I much rather would have the Red Sox bullpen right now.

  • Tony MacMillan

p.s. I helped Hanley put subwoofers in his Denali back when he was in Portland…

  • CocoCrispFan

I think that the Red Sox never should have traded coco. Because if they didnt trade him then they would have no problem trading jacoby ellsburry but since they did that i think that they dont want to give up a CF because there is no one else in the minors that is good enough to play in the MLB.

  • fpinstrips

hey “redsoxsux” all I have to say is CC is just like A-Rod in the playoffs….garbage, and what has Teixeira done, he had like 6 hits in the playoffs all singles..and AJ come on, he going to work out like carl pavano did for you guys..Boras played the yankees….. there is no way in hell teixeira is worth that much..have fun in 3rd place this year..

  • Tony MacMillan

    amen “fpinstripes”

  • Ian

Coco Crisp Fan: I think that the Red Sox never should have traded coco. Because if they didnt trade him then they would have no problem trading jacoby ellsburry

The Red Sox did the right thing in trading Coco. They had two very capable center fielders in coco and ellsbury. But with Ellsbury being younger and can do a lot more than Coco, they made the right move in trading Coco and got something of value to them that they needed.

I would expect Coco to show the Red Sox they made a mistake in trading him but only time will tell that for us.

  • Man Ram

“and third cc is only good in the national league so suck on tht. go sox”

Interesting statement considering CC won the CY in 2007 with an AL team….

  • EastCoastBoast

Comparing Teixeira to Bay is pretty accurate, but Teixeira is an outstanding 1B, which means a tiny bit more than being a solid outfielder. Hierarchy separates the two, but the stats don’t lie — they are pretty close. I don’t know if Teixeira is a six-hitter in an AL lineup, though. That’s a shrewd statement considering what he did for Chipper Jones and the Braves in his year there (not to mention his blistering numbers in LAA in his brief stay there). He may never crank the 40+ in any one season like he did some years back in Texas, but putting him behind Alex Rodriguez is flat-out scary for anyone.

Now, Hanley Ramirez to the Red Sox would be interesting, but I’m not sure what the need is for offense at the shortstop position. Typically, it’s defense that wins out there; if any one player has the total package and the five-tooled talents of offense and defense, then more power to him. But you don’t see that often. Expecting that as a new standard, then, becomes a little foolish.

And I say that with Ramirez’s average defense notwithstanding. His range factor is about par with league average, but his fielding percentage and error, assist, and putout counts could and should improve. Ramirez is only 24.

Seeing Hanley Ramirez leading off in Boston would be simply ridiculous (in a good way). I, for one, would not worry about trading prospect packages for him as the Red Sox have one of the finest and fullest farm systems of any team in baseball. Take a stab or two and if it doesn’t work out, oh well. Use Jed Lowrie in the short term and go fishing around the deadline.

This is too good to not join in.

OK Yankee$ fans, you’ve seen the Fat Waste spend half a king’s ransom to get CC, AJ, a first baseman who hit one more home run than The Golden Thong and Kevin Cash (well, Jorge can’t throw as far as second bases, so……).

You still have a pitching staff with with a number one starter (CC), a two (Wang), half a three (AJ) and some small fraction of two number fives (Hughes and Kennedy). Assume a full season is 1,500 innings (9 times 162, rounded to make the math easier). Who’s pitching the innings – CC is good for 200 (30 starts, 7 innings average each, rounded), Wang 175, AJ, ummm 75 (15 games, five innings average), the two flops, let’s say together they give the Yankee$ 200 innings. Oh yeah, Jaba the Hut will get in 125 innings of nothing but 98 mile per hour fastballs before he blows his arm out in August. Then Mariano will add 50 (how much will they really need a closer to finish third?). That leaves 675 innings for middle relief – that’s about four innings a game. Good luck!

Looks to me like another season of 8-7 games. Hopefully they’re on the short end 75 times.

  • Skaidy Mieses

Ok look I’ve seen my boyfriend this christmas vacation stress about the red sox like crazy about getting teixiera because mike lowell is getting old and who knows how he’s going to be when he comes back. He’s a big baseball fanatic and his best friend who’s a yankee fan even said the yankees over paid CC & Teixiera. What my boyfriend said is that boston needs to trade lugo and get someone better or offer a 2-3 with lowe.

  • Doug

The Yankees overpaid for all of their free agents this year. AJ Burnett may have led the AL in strikeouts last year and may have had 18 wins, but his ERA was 4.07. Besides that, Burnett is going to get injured anyway. CC can be matched by a healthy Josh Beckett in Boston, Wang can be matched by Dice-K, Burnett won’t even pitch with his injury history, Joba’s arm is going to get blown out soon enough, and Ian Kennedy and Phil Hughes are inconsistent and belong in the minors. Meanwhile, the Sox have a talented young pitcher in Jon Lester and two solid veterans in Wakefield and Schmidt. Plus, as others said, Bay’s stats match Teixeira’s offensively, and although I admit Teixeira’s glove is obviously better, Youk’s fielding is just as good or better than Teixeira’s. And if a team has two players with similar stats(Jason Bay and Mark Teixeira) and one his hitting 6th, while the other is hitting 3rd or 4th, the lineup with the number 6 hitter has to have the better lineup, which in this case, is true. Also, IF the Yankees make the playoffs, let me remind you how bad CC and A-Rod have choked in the playoffs. Hope you’re happy in 3rd place, Yankees.

  • Nat

I am a die hard sox fan and I don’t think tex sucks. He is a great player but the yanks have spent a ton of money every year and wen was the last time they won the world series??? So Yankees fans, don’t get your hopes up. We should totally trade for hanley!

    • mATT

YA I LIKE TEX 2 BUT WERE NOT IN A MILLION YEARS GETTIN HANELY JUST TRUST ME IK THE GAME BETTER THAN ANYONE

  • 26 Championships

Don’t expect much from Ortiz coming off an injury and he wont be getting as many good pitches as he did in the past, being that Manny is now gone.

  • red sox fan

i think that the red sox should get hanley ramirez back and trade lugo and Clay Buccholz for hanley ramirez hanley is better than lugo and jed Lowrie at the same time… BUT the RED SOX DONT THINK!!!!!!!! number 2 IS THE BEST

  • Mr.Marlin

I think the marlins should trade Hanley. It’s a really good deal. All these young players like Elsbury will brigten up your future. Go for it!!!!!!!!! Yah Marlins!!!!!

  • Ian

The Marlins would never make this trade now or ever especially now that Hanley is the face of the franchise and should be around when the new stadium opens.

  • alex

  • todd

Beckett or not, Theo is a complete tard for including H Ramirez in any trade. Now this so-called Ivy league blowhard looks even more like a bumbling idiot by scrambling to patch up his initial bonehead move. I don’t think anyone would argue that HR would’ve been far more fun for Boston fans to watch than someone who pitches every fifth day. What’s more, Beckett thus far has been a one hit wonder, not including this year. You stink, Theodore!!!
