Donald Brown Passed Over For Doak Walker Award

November 24th, 2008 by Ian · 11 Comments ·

Donald BrownThe three finalists for the Doak Walker Award were announced this afternoon and UConn Huskies running back Donald Brown was not among them. Instead, Michigan State’s Javon Ringer, Georgia’s Knowshon Moreno and Iowa’s Shonn Greene were chosen.

“For me, that’s a disappointment because I think he should be,” coach Randy Edsall said. “He’s the leading rusher in the country; he’s up there (among the best). What else would you have to do? Just because he’s not from a big-name school, a supposed big-name school? He has more yards than them, probably more carries (and) more touchdowns; that is kind of surprising to me. That’s the way it is. He’ll just go about his business and keep working hard and try to help his team win.”

The Doak Walker Award is presented to top running back in the country which right now at least statistically Brown is.

Despite just 98 yards last night, Brown is still leading the country in rushing at 148.63 yards per game. He has scored 16 touchdowns this season. Greene is second on the list at 144.08 ypg and has 17 touchdowns. Ringer is third on the list with 132.50 ypg and has 21 touchdowns.

Where’s Moreno you ask? Moreno is the 13th leading rusher in the country at 113.09 ypg and 15 touchdowns.

Obviously statistics don’t mean a thing for the people who choose this award and it’s a crying shame.

Thats too bad but the fact that the Big East is a very weak football conference, kills his chances at these awards just like it hurt Ray Rice, Pat White, Steve Slaton and others. It’s perceived that they’re putting up those yards on weaker conference foes than guys who play in the SEC, Big 12, PAC 10 or Big 10.

  • Ian

Oh I totally agree with you. His numbers don’t lie though. It’s the fact that he plays for UConn which is a basketball school and not known for football yet.

I’m guessing if he rushed for 2,000 yards and 20 touchdowns he still wouldn’t win it.

  • suebeewankenobi

Maybe they figure he has another year of eligibility to win it.

  • Steve

That doesn’t work. Ringer is the only senior. Moreno is a soph (redshirt); Greene is a junior as is Brown. It’s the conference it kills the national landscape for awards for anyone not just the guys at UConn.

Losing Miami, BC and VT killed them football wise because Cincinnati, USF and Louisville haven’t done much to help elevate the conference nationally in football. Those additions are much better basketball additions than anything.

He should have been one of the finalists instead of moreno but Green is the best back in the country by far so it’s not like he had a chance to win it anyways.
    GO HAWKS!!

  • Ben

no he definitly should not have been in the reason his yards per game is so high is because he gets so many more carries his yards per carry is only 4.2 which is terrible compared to the others i mean moreno has 5.9 and Ringer has 6.2. I mean in moreno had 150 more attemps he would have better stats than him. yeah he didnt deserve it

  • Ben

and also he isnt the leading rusher so stop saying that

  • Ian

and also he isnt the leading rusher so stop saying that

I will stop calling him that when the national media does.

  • Brett

Actually Ben, Javon Ringer is only averaging 4.3 yards per carry, the worst average amongst the finalists, and less than Donald Brown. Get your facts right before you start bashing everyone else.

  • Ben

yea sorry ringer only has 4.3 so brown should probably be in over him but you also got to think about defences the coference that he plays dont have exactly have the best defences like the SEC does. I mean i will say the sec has not done the best this year with like Auburn, Tennesee, and LSU but they still have many of the toughest defenses

Moreno is gonna show Ringer that he didnt deserve to be a finalist during the capital one bowl

and also he passed greene with yards but greene is a much better back

  • Ben

well first of all greene had more yards than him for a few weeks and he only became the leading rusher again since he played for a conference title when greene didnt and greene is notable much much better back

and they showed that the amout of yards you have doesnt make you the best back by not choosing him
